I posted a mute preview of this last week, but now we have a version with some dialog and additional pages… I do wonder how Mags is going to react to his newfound gay grandson dating a Kree/Skrull hybrid.
THE RACE IS ON as the Avengers, the Young Avengers, and the X-Men compete to be the first to find the Scarlet Witch. When the Young Avengers discover the secret of Wanda Maximoff’s disappearance, the Avengers attempt to neutralize the Scarlet Witch before the Young Avengers can find her. But their efforts soon lead to an all-out war between the Avengers and the X-Men that only the Young Avengers can stop.

I was psyched to see Mags show up on the last page of the first issue. I’d been so focussed on the Scarlet Witch being Wiccan and Speed’s mom, that I forgot all about their grandfather (and uncle for that matter – did they talk to Pietro in Mighty Avengers?). Here are some unlettered preview images from #2!
Magneto confronts the two Young Avengers claiming to be his grand-children, in the hopes of finding his lost daughter, The Scarlet Witch. But he’s not the only one on her trail—the Avengers and the X-Men are both out looking to fulfill their own agendas.
Will they be able to work together or will the heroes of the Marvel Universe find themselves in another war over the Scarlet Witch? Find out in Avengers: Children’s Crusade #2!
I’m very glad to hear that the X-Men will be playing a part in this epic story as well. But questions abound… Where is Wanda? How will they find her? How will her old Avengers buddies feel about her when they do? How do the X-Men figure in? Do the mutants want/deserve revenge for M-Day?

I’ll be featuring whatever mainstream comics that I come across featuring LGBT characters and issues. Last week there were two mainstream Marvel comics with gay male characters in leading roles. In the first, our favorite teen gay couple, Hulkling and Wiccan will finally be getting some page time together in the 9 part, bi-monthly maxi-series starring the pair and their teammates in the Young Avengers as they begin a quest to find The Scarlet Witch. Since their creation, Marvel has really done an outstanding job of handling their sexuality in a nonchalant, matter of fact way that shows it to be no big deal.

To have Captain America literally say “I have no problem with that” and then have Jarvis make up their room sends an powerful message to the masses out there… Its OK to be gay. While you and I may know that, we don’t all live in San Francisco. I was a bit worried when Disney first bought Marvel, but with their pro-lgbt record (watch a few Family Channel shows sometime), I should have known better. Kudos to Marvel, Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung on the first chapter of a story that I can’t wait to see unfold. By the way… GREAT LAST PAGE on first issue! Who could it be? Think, who are potential blood relatives to Wiccan and Speed!
More on the 2nd title in a bit…

I’m a HUGE fan of the Young Avengers so this is by far the Heroic Age title that I’ve been most eagerly anticipating. Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch) will be a major part of the story and her relationship to twins Wiccan and Speed finally addressed head on, so it really is THE YA story we’ve all been awaiting. Here is an unlettered preview if the first issue which hits stores Thursday 7/8 due to the 4th of July mail delay.
From original Young Avengers creators Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung comes a new tale chronicling the Scarlet Witch’s return to the Marvel U. With three words, the Scarlet Witch changed everything. So what will she do next?
Did Hulkling really kiss that terrorist as a diversion? A bit surprised they’d go there. I love that it is a 9 issue epic, but HATE that it is bi-monthly. It’s going to take 18 months to tell IF THEY CAN STICK TO THE SCHEDULE.

This epic (9 feet 10 inches wide by 2 feet 6 inches tall) Heroic Age Avengers poster is comprised of Marko Djurdjevic’s variant painted covers featured on ALL the first issues of the newly rebooted Avengers titles: New Avengers, Avengers Academy, Secret Avengers, The Avengers (and maybe even Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade and Thunderbolts – that is a WIDE poster).
Left to right: the villains, the Avengers Academy teachers and characters, the New Avengers, the Avengers, the Secret Avengers, and the Young Avengers.
You should recognize Djurdjevic’s style by now. He is kinda Marvel’s go to guy for painted covers of late. They must have him chained up to an easel somewhere… In addition to these variants and his other Secret Avengers illustrations, this prolific artist’s work has graced a number of Siege Tie-in covers (see below), as well as the covers of: Invincible Iron Man, Captain America, Mighty Avengers, X-Men, Wolverine, Amazing Spider-Man, Thor #600, Ms. Marvel, Hulk, Cable, Thunderbolts, Daredevil #500, and even Marvel Boy, Magik and Doctor Voodoo: Avenger Of The Supernatural. Has he missed anyone?
These Heroic Age posters are going to go like hotcakes – in fact they seem to be sold out on pre-order. Lets hope Marvel realizes the demand and ups the supply.

Fans of the original Young Avengers creative team of Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung will be happy to hear the pair are finally reuniting for a 9 issue limited series featuring the team they created. The concepts for Avengers: The Children’s Crusade were originally planned for Young Avengers with Scarlet Witch, and will “address the question of parentage.”

Heinberg: The story is largely told from Wiccan’s point of view, and it attempts to explore the idea that sometimes the line between hero and villain is a very thin one, depending on which side you’re standing on. In my experience, no one is ever purely good or purely evil. The Scarlet Witch is a perfect example. She’s always been a ambiguous figure in the Marvel Universe. She started out as part of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, then she became an Avenger, then she tried to destroy the Avengers. So, in the end, is she a hero or a villain? Jim and I thought it was important the Young Avengers wrestle with the idea that, even in a super-powered world of ostensible heroes and villains, it’s not always easy to tell one from the other.
Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch and the Avengers play an enormous role in the story (YAY!!!) which involves not only Avengers, but the mutant community as well. Expect some exciting fallout from as far back as House of M, Decimation AND Disassembled. Issue number six is being currently scripted. All nine scripts should be done by July (which could be the first issue date). It’s “emotional and intimate” for a big event. I hope this really brings the Scarlet Witch back to the forefront of the Marvel U.

Even though it’s been FAR too long since the Young Avengers have had a title of their own, they’ve been the focus of a limited title during the past two mega events (Civil Way and Secret Invasion) and The Siege is no exception. Instead of a mini-series it will just be a one shot, but this time they aren’t sharing it with The Runaways (who seem noticeably absent of late). We saw them arrive at the battle alongside the likes of Captain America, but what happens once they find themselves on the frontline of a war between Gods and supermen? Read Siege: Young Avengers to find out!
Fans of Wiccan should be happy. Writer Sean McKeever says he gets the most time on-panel of the group, but everyone will get some attention. Also mentioned was a reminder that Wiccan’s original codename was “Asgardian” for a reason and we’ll be learning it here. PLUS They are taking on The Wrecking Crew!!! I love the look of these pencils from artist Mahmud Asrar. Looked like he was influenced by Alan Davis.

Starting a new feature spotlighting LGBT characters new and old alike! I’ll begin with two of the most popular recent characters to be outed…
4 color gay couple Theodore "Teddy" Altman (a.k.a. Hulkling) and William "Billy" Kaplan (a.k.a. Wiccan – originally called Asgardian) first appeared in April 2005 in Marvel Comics Young Avengers #1 written by Allan Heinberg and illustrated by Jim Cheung. The names they debuted with are a bit misleading as Hulkling ihas no relationship to the gamma powered Hulk, but is actually the Kree/Skrull hybrid son of Captain Marvel and the Skrull Princess Anelle with super strength, super healing, and shape-shifting abilities. Wiccan’s sorcerous pedigree is no less impressive in that he and his newly discovered speedster twin brother are the long-thought-imaginary sons of the Scarlet Witch (but who’s their daddy? Maybe Mephisto!)!
 |
A romantic link was subtly hinted at early on in the Young Avengers series, more obviously suggested at when the team was choosing new names and Kate Bishop tells Billyhe he needs a new name that won’t be a "national joke when the press finds out about him and Teddy" (Ass-guardian), and finally fully stated in the second arc when Billy’s very supportive and sweet parents get a little confused when the boys are trying to tell them they are super heroes. There are more instances, and details but I wouldn’t want to spoil your reading.
Although their committed romantic relationship between two gay teens on a super hero team is still very unique in the world of mainstream comics, more and more characters have been popping out of the 4 color closet lately. A trend of which I whole-heartedly approve! Rumor has it that originally creator Heinberg didn’t think Marvel would let him have a gay couple on the team, so he planned Hulkling as a female who used a male form to intimidate enemies, but kept him male once he got the gay go ahead.
The boys romance hasn’t progressed that far physically – they ARE teen characters and therefore fictional role models so I understand Marvel taking it slow. While they have been seen sitting clothed on the same bed, heard expressing affection and shown embracing in a loving manner, it was Peter David’s X-Factor that gave Marvel it’s first male same sex kiss with the more mature characters of Shatterstar and Rictor. Hopefully Teddy and Billy will get a chance to smooch in the Avengers: Childrens Crusade project Heinberg is supposedly brewing for Summer 2010.
The entire Young Avengers series is available in 2 trade paperback volumes, Sidekicks and Family Matters. The subsequent Young Avengers Presents was a six-issue mini-series with each focusing on a different Young Avenger and has also been collected as a trade. Although Marvel’s commitment to letting series creator Allan Heinberg pen the next series has delayed another regular title, each of Marvel’s recent "events" have given us another Young Avengers mini-series… During Civil War and Secret Invasion the team shred billing with the Runaways, but they got their own Dark Reign mini series pitting then against a new team of rebel "Young Avengers" whose roster comes across more like the Young Masters of Evil. These 3 mini’s were collected as well. Links are above.

Although we are in for some Daken-on-Hulkling action during the finale of the YA miniseries, Wiccan doesn’t have anything to worry about. Teddy really is true blue (er green) and immune to the pheremonal charms of Wolverine’s tattooed bisexual bad boy offspring. Now if only he can do something about the slashing claws.
So can the Young Avengers and those who would be Young Avengers form one big happy group? Can either of them live under Norman Osborn’s rules? Will blood out? Will guilt win? Will Speed and Coat or won’t they? It’s the end. And lots of terrible stuff happens. And everything ends in tatters.
I can’t wait to see where this leaves the Young Avengers gang. It’s been announced that creator Allen Heinberg has a YA project coming.

It’s been awhile since we the old rallying cry invoked the same nostalgic feelings. I’ve already said my peace about retconned characters, but it seems like The Unspoken is merely a means to an end… generic omega level threat to make it necessary to bring together all the Avengers.
As the epic battle with The Unspoken threatens all of Earth, the team-up you’ve been waiting for finally happens as members of the Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Young Avengers, and the Avengers Initiative unite to fight a foe that no single hero could withstand! How can Marvel fit so many Avengers in one issue? Against the most powerful Inhuman of all, with the greatest weapon in history, do they have a choice? All that plus a special appearance by the Dark Avengers.
The following unlettered pages of Mighty Avengers #30 art accompanied CBR’s interview with author Dan Slott. It looks like quite an impressive group. I haven’t been so psyched to see the Avengers Assemble since George Perez’ recent run.
I’m also REALLY happy to see Wiccan and Hulkling showing up more often. As much as I want to see a regular Young Avengers title again, I also like seeing them do their heroic thing alongside the big boys. I’m hoping they’ll join the Mighty line-up on a regular basis – looking good on the cover of next issue along with the team.

I’m totally uninterested in yet another omnipotent retconned character, so I could talk or leave the UNSPOKEN storyline. But I love the Young Avengers and it was Lady Loki’s manipulations that got me onboard for this run of the series, so I’ll deal with a long forgotten Inhuman king to get to the question of the story…
Will Ronin recognize Lady Loki’s reflection in his sword? Or at least will he notice it isn’t Wanda?
“SECRETS & LIES” It’s all out action at the Avengers new headqarters as RONIN and VISION face off against the SCARLET WITCH! Readers already know the Scarlet Witch is secretly LOKI, but could this be the issue where STATURE and the other MIGHTY AVENGERS find out?
Also, on the outskirts of Tibet, QUICKSILVER and a longtime Avengers villain uncover THE UNSPOKEN’S plan to dominate all life on Earth. What is the secret origin of The Slave Engine? And what horribly, freakish thing has it done to the U.S. AGENT? Guest Starring: RONIN and THE YOUNG AVENGERS

This has been buiding since Stature laid eyes on the “Scarlet Witch.”
Guest-starring the YOUNG AVENGERS! When the adults are away, it’s the perfect time for VISION and STATURE to sneak a few friends into the Avengers new headquarters and throw a party. No, not that kind of party. It’s a hunting party– and the target they’re after is…THE SCARLET WITCH!
Little do they know their target is non other than Lady Loki himself. From the cover of issue #29 it looks like his/her little secret may be coming out?

I’m glad this story is finally being told. Young Avengers creator Allen Heinberg had long planned a group of Young Masters of Evilesque teenaged supervillains and now the concept is seeing print as part of the Dark Reign event!
The Melter; The Executioner; The Enchantress; Egghead; Big Zero and Coat of Arms: they call themselves the Young Avengers, teenage rebels, on the run from the authorities, hated and feared by a world they’ve sworn to protect. Their interests include interspecies romance, modern art and bloody murder. Everything is permitted, and so are they. Until they meet the original Young Avengers. And then their grey areas will come home to roost.

It seems the Dark Reign isn’t just shaking up the New and Mighty Avengers. The Young Avengers are in for some new and not so friendly faces. In Dark Reign: Young Avengers, an upcoming miniseries from Young Avengers Presents writer Paul Cornell with art by Mark Brooks, the original Young Avengers not only find that they aren’t the new young upstarts they thought they were when a newer group of young upstarts comes on the scene, calling THEMSELVES the Young Avengers.
The Dark “Young Avengers” are just as eclectic a group as the original Young Avengers. Only their ranks are composed of misfits and misguided characters, many of whom see the art of superheroics as being more about hurting than helping people.
Egghead: The team’s cracked android, cruel and wayward and not above a bit of dissection. He wants to examine the human condition intimately, with livers in his hands, and shares Big Zero’s mattress. Hopefully made by Elihas Starr, the original Egghead and not Ultron. Thankfully less ridiculous-looking than his namesake.
The Enchantress: Melter’s sort of girlfriend (when she feels like it) is a fly by night magician who claims she’s from Asgard, but can’t quite manage to keep the right sort of speech patterns going. She’s been described as “frighteningly offhand with her magic.” From the description it isn’t Amora, I wonder if she’s related or a pretender.
The Executioner: a rich and organized urban vigilante, who hunts and kills criminal scum (a la the Punisher). He also likes to hurt pets. This doesn’t sound like Skurge at all.
Big Zero: a white power skinhead who can grow to enormous size or sink to microscopic, who claims she’s raising an army in the Microverse with the aim of toppling the Federal government. Her favorite thing is to goad people of other races. Any guesses on her legacy ties to a Masters of Evil member? Maybe Goliath or Yellowjacket II?
Coat of Arms: a celebrated modern artist who chronicles the nature of superheroics in her art. She placed Melter in charge and places the team in what she calls ’scenes’: foiling a bank robbery; battling another super hero team. Although she put the team together, Coat of Arms believes that her job isn’t to lead the parade, but to observe it. Her set of 6 arms reminds me of Spiral but her costume has a Black Knight vibe.
The Melter: an idealistic kid who can’t get a good costume together, with the organic power to melt– anything. Which is kind of useless, right? Or maybe it could work, if only he could get a break. He finds himself the leader of the group, and tries his best, but can’t get any respect either. And there’s something truly terrible that happens to him, because of him, in the first issue. I can’t blame him for not wanting a costume – look at the original Melter.

This line-up does look an awful lot like the Young Masters of Evil to me. Although Young Avengers creator is apparently still too busy writing for the shirtless doctors of Grays Anatomy, its nice to know his ideas still live on with the title. He’s wanted to bring in a Young Masters to offset the YA, and with Dark Reign its going to happen.

There are actually SIX stories if you count each issues chapter of the 5-part back-up story… a “What if the Runaways became the Young Avengers.”

We’ve always known Cassie Lang was the product of a broken home. She’s was introduced as the preteen daughter of a dead ex-con turned costumed adventurer father and a bitch of a Mom who divorced him and married a cop who didn’t like superheroes either. Not exactly a Norman Rockwell painting. Hell, its not even an Alex Ross commemorative plate.
In this tale we get a peak into this not so pretty picture as Cassie attempts to recover from a traumatizing failure as a hero. Doesn’t the Initiative have shrinks on the payroll for this? Well if it gets her back with the Young Avengers and away from Skrully Hank Pym and that creepy Initiative base, all the better. Too bad someone innocent may have been hurt in the bargain though… head to the comic shops Thursday (HOLIDAY DELAYS COMIC BOOK SHIPPING) to see what happens after these pages…

With Young Avengers 5 Stature coming out this week (more on that next) I was reminded that Alan Davis (Of Captain Britain, Excalibur and ClanDestine fame) will be taking up the pencilling chores for Young Avengers Presents 6: Hawkeye. Some of Alan Davis’ pencil sketches are below the Jim Cheung cover.
Newsarama’s Benjamin Ong Pang Kean spoke with Marvel’s Matt Fraction (The Punisher War Journal, Invincible Iron Man AND Uncanny X-Men as of 500 – he can sure churn it out) about the upcoming issue and revealed that it has a lot to do with the current Hawkeye meeting the original as Kate Bishop comes face to face with (not dead) Clint Barton.
Full article and interview at Newsarama
Will Clint find her worthy of his mantle? Has her rich absentee daddy noticed the money she used to fund the team and design costumes yet? How is it that she is such a natural with such a variety of weapons? Is she the Taskmasters daughter? – (his identity is still unrevealed, despite his tenure at the initiative). You have to wait a month for these answers (well not answers to all the questions, just the first). So far I think I’m the only one asking the rest.
