“Age of X” The heavily hyped X-Universe Event kicks off in X-Men Legacy #245. There has been much ado about “The Age of X” and the time has come to see what secrets this alternate timeline has to share. I don’t know what they will be but we can expect some serious 616 ramifications by X-Men Legacy #250 (which also ships with an alternate variant FF Anniversary cover).
AGE OF X’ PART ONE! In a world where the X-Men never existed and mutantkind has been hunted to extinction, the few remaining mutants band together to make their last stand. Who are they? And just how far will they go to survive? The AGE OF X starts here!
“The Age of X” Scribe Mike Carey is still mum on the inciting event of the story arc saying only “the mystery of how “Age of X” came about is central to the story, and the answer is (I hope) one that you won’t see coming.” Be sure to check out the AGE OF X HISTORICAL LOG Images I posted recently and the AGE OF X COMMUNIQUÉS posted over at CBR for more backstory on Hellion, Cannonball, Revenant (Phoenix/Jean), Bezerker (Warpath), Gambit, Frenzy, Basilisk (Cyclops), Nightmare (Pixie), Reaper (Rogue) and Magneto.

OK, a bit more info has surfaces about the mysterious Age of X. Among the tidbits teased… the X-Universe event is “a mystery thriller” that, as the Alternate Timeline unfolds, will lead up to a revelation about it’s relevance to the Earth 616 continuity we all know and love. Though the X in the title very much stands for X-Men, there IS also something (or someone) actually called “X,” but writer Mike Carey is still being pretty tight lipped about that, saying only “We’d like you to discover X” and “it may be a stretch to call X a character.”
Age of X is set in a world that has never seen mutant X-Men to put their lives on the line defending those who hate and fear them from evil mutants. The X-Men never came together as a team, therefore they never spawned the New Mutants, X-Force, Excalibur or X-Factor. Although mutants have never formed an organized pro-active team, their enemies have… and many of the surviving mutants have sought refuge in a long-besieged fortress as the whole world is “hostile territory” for them.
Carey said there “are a number of inciting incidents, and one really crucial absence, one person, who seems to have to have not played a role at all,” when asked how this anti-mutant world came about. One such incident was Phoenix (Revenant – who is DEFINITELY NOT Hope) destroying a town near Albany.
Rogue (Reaper) is very much the protagonist and point of view character in the first of the three acts,” Carey said, but other characters would take center stage as the situation escalates. “But she is our entry character.”
The event begins in “Age of X: Alpha” in January and continues in X-Men Legacy and New Mutants for the first few months of 2011. During the Age of X, forget all you know about who loves who and expect to see some “new cool things with their powers.” In a world with no X-Men, any good they did, went undone. What does the Age of X hold in store? Who would the X-Men be WITHOUT being X-Men? I’d like to know. Good thing is this a BIT more self contained than the last few events. Aside from an Age of X: Avengers tie in, crossovers should be minimal.

I’m guessing Magneto and Gambit are competing for her hand? But neither would be shocking, so then who? She doesn’t really have much history with anyone else.
Rogue has survived a lot in her day, but can she survive the men warring for her heart? It’s not the first time several men have courted the Southern Belle, but it is the first time she can actually do anything about it. Who will she chose? You’ll be shocked!

All the X-blogs are abuzz with talk of the the big X-Men Event to follow on the heels of Necrosha… Second Coming crosses over into X-Men (Uncanny & Legacy), X-Factor, X-Force and New Mutants. The X-Men have their hands full with the technarch-infected mutant-hating/hunting AI entity known as Bastion back yet again to bedevil them. PLUS it looks now that A Girl Named Hope is over and she and Cable are back from the future, the Phoenix is back too. but is Hope Summers really Jean? If so, what, reincarnated? Hope WAS born in Alaska… could she be Madelyne Pryor’s or some Summers/Grey genetic experiment of Mister Sinister’s – he DID come after her before Rogue killed him (and his seemingly short-lived return as Miss Sinister). And if the girl known as Hope Summers IS the Phoenix, does that mean Bishop was right to want her dead? Is she fated to save or damn mutankind? Only time and these stories will tell.
All will unite. One will rise. One will die. One will lead. One will sacrifice. Your thoughts? Mine after the Marvel teaser images…
All will unite – the disparate x-teams will come together. One will rise – will Hope be the return of Phoenix or Dark Phoenix (was Bishop right)? One will die – I’m guessing Cable. One will lead – not sure if it is Emma or Mags – I think Scott may be too broken by his son Nathan’s death (if I’m right) and need some time. One will sacrifice… hmmm Not sure what the sacrifice will be… Maybe Nathan gives his life to save Hope’s… any other theories?
With this crossover running through all the major X-Titles: Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy, New Mutants, X-Force and even the usually somewhat unplugged X-Factor, it is a MAJOR event. And with longtime x-foe Bastion as the big bad and specials showcasing the X-Men’s resident supergeniuses (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1) and a 3-issue miniseries chronicling an ill-timed side-battle in Limbo (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1), we may just have to wait awhile to find out if Hope Summer will we absolutely corrupted by her newfound power or not. See Shades of X to Come – May 2010 for more on those specials!

Emplate is back and he’s hungry. He lived off his sisters (Penance) for a long time and a mutant with abilities like Bling (whose bone marrow produces diamonds) offers him a potentially unlimited sustenance. Good thing the X-Men aren’t likely to let her go without a fight.

The Dark X-Men/Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men crossover continues as hell breaks loose on the streets of San Francisco.
While San Francisco is still reeling from the onslaught of the Dark Avengers, Rogue struggles to cope with the power and perspective of a God, the young X-student Trance undergoes a terrifying transformation, and X-Men Legacy takes a dramatic new direction.

Well those upset by the upheaval that Dark Reign is causing to Marvels merry mutants should be happy to see Rogue and Gambit return to the fold. With them AND Psylocke back on the team, it seems like old home week. Plus it seems Danger‘s new outlook is holding thus far.
UTOPIA TIE-IN Rogue, Gambit and Danger go to join the X-Men in San Francisco, only to find it in flames. The Dark Avengers have come into town and are taking no prisoners. Wait, the whole problem is that they ARE taking prisoners.
Norman Osborn has the city of San Francisco in the palm of his hands and mutants are being forced to take sides. Will they side with Cyclops and the X-Men? Or go to Osborn and his Dark X-Men? What side will the returning mutants and one of the X-Men’s most powerful foes take? Part 1 (of 2)
UPDATE: OK the hype I quoted above is totally misleading. Neither Rogue nor Gambit (or even Danger) considered taking Osborn’s side for a millisecond. Also Rogue absorbed enough raw Olympian power from Ares to make next issue’s fight interesting. PLUS the return of Ariel from the Fallen Angels miniseries? REALLY?

It has been quite awhile since I have seen a writer really show us what an alpha level telepath is capable of. But this issue of Legacy seems to bring Professor Xavier back to the power level he once possessed. Marvel is once again reminding us that this is a man who could literally think anyone to death.
Professor X’s odyssey brings him full circle as he answers a call from the Acolytes. But what do they want? Revenge? Or a new leader? Xavier’s LEGACY journey ends here, and it’s a doozie.
Check out that gorgeous Daniel Acuna cover!!! They outta make a poster out of that.

Well maybe for awhile. We’ll see.
It seems since the beginning, the pages of the X-Men have contained a great love story. Although the courtship and relationship of Scott and Jean was interrupted briefly by her “death,” it picked up right where it left off upon her return. Other romances have been written (Scott and Madelyne, Scott and Emma, Alex and Lorna, Kitty and Pietor, Betsy and Warren, Rogue and Magneto) but only one other pairing has generated anywhere near the support as that of Scott and Jean… the impossible (until now) romance of Rogue and Gambit.
Despite the fact that her powers make physical touch impossible, these two fell in love. They’ve had some times when she was depowered or had her powers temporarily inhibited, but other than that it was strictly no skin to skin contact. Until now. As of X-Men Legacy #224, Rogue is cured. Xavier (with the aid of a now helpful Danger) was able to remove personality partitions in her mind and allow her powers to reach their “mature phase”for the first time.
My prediction: Scott and Emma are breaking up so Rogue and Remy get to be the big romance for awhile. Next time Scott is stable with Emma (or Jean for that matter), Rogue’s lack of control may come back – (perhaps while she’s dramatically pregnant).
So we saw what happens when she DOESN’T use her powers… nothing. But I wonder if there are any other differences to the mature phase of her powers besides her newfound control? I’m looking forward to getting to know the all-new Rogue, but I’m still not sure how I feel about them “fixing” such a fundamental part of the character.
