Is this THE DEATH OF AN AVENGER? So Marvel claims. With Marvel Comics’ previous threats on record about killing 1 main character per quarter, I’d be shaking in my super booties if I was asked to Assemble.
The Young Avengers find themselves on the wrong side of the Scarlet Witch’s reality-altering powers in their final battle against the combined forces of THE AVENGERS and THE X-MEN.
In this penultimate issue of the epic maxi-series, the Young Avengers have no one to turn to except each other as they are forced to fight their lifelong heroes, to the death. Find out who lives and who dies.
This epic maxi series is drawing near its close with only 1 issue left after this one. We may not know who lives or dies yet, perhaps it will be a heroic sacrifice from the recently resurrected Scott Lang – but whoever it is – it WON’T be the Scarlet Witch. She has far too much in store for her in the pages of the upcoming A vs X Event. But if someone will die… the better question is WHO will kill them?

Both Marvel comics and DC’s “New 52″ show a commitment to inclusion of LGBT characters in some of their best titles. I’ll likely expand and update this post to include more titles, so leave a comment to point out any I left out. If it’s a DC title, sightings should be post relaunch.
DC’s New 52 line up of titles contains a number that prominently feature LGBT characters. Stormwatch chronicles the future relationship between gay Superman and Batman analogues Apollo and The Midnighter. Their story has been told, but never in the DCU proper. Teen Titans will introduce Bunker, a flamboyant gay teen hero. Batwoman follows the costumed adventures of lesbian socialite Kate Kane. The Shade is a new maxi-series set in Opal City and the cast includes bisexual blue alien Mikasl Tomas a.k.a. Starman. No sign of recently resurrected Aussi gay were-hero Tasmanian Devil.
Marvel may not have rebooted their entire universe recently, but nonetheless also have a number of high profile titles showcasing LGBT characters. The most popular LGBT characters of the Marvel U would be gay teen Young Avengers… Wiccan and Hulkling. A close second would be gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar from Peter David’s brilliant X-Factor. Daken Akihiro, the tattooed, bisexual bad boy son of Wolverine is fast becoming a fan favorite. Speaking of Wolverine, when he scooped up the X-kids and brought them back-to-school, he included Anole, Graymalkin and Bling. Karma has also stated Weschester is her destination.
If you think I forgot about Alpha Flight… not so fast. You may not have heard that news of it’s status as an ongoing title was premature. Alpha Flight is cancelled as of issue #8.

Even if I wasn’t already a huge Young Avengers fan, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade would still consistently be one of the best books in my buy pile. The art is gorgeous, the story compelling and well written, the characters beloved (Hulkling, Wiccan, Speed, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver)… and its all REALLY starting to come to a boil.
In issue #7 we FINALLY get at least part of the real backstory on why Wanda went batshit crazy and Disassembled the Avengers back in 04-05. I’ll include some spoilerific details after the jump, so don’t read past the pics if you haven’t picked up the issue yet (I try to post reviews a week or so after to give you all time).
IT’S THE AVENGERS VERSUS THE X-MEN – with the Young Avengers and X-Factor caught in the crossfire — as all four teams battle to determine who will hold the Scarlet Witch responsible for her crimes. Plus, when the origin of the Scarlet Witch’s godlike powers – and the secret history of her murderous rampage in “Avengers: Disassembled” — are finally revealed, the truth creates a rift among the members of the Young Avengers that the team may not survive.
My only major objection to characterization is: bloodthirsty Cyclops seems too out of character. He’s ready to “burn the Witch where she stands” AFTER she’s demonstrates she can reverse the effects of M-Day by returning Rictor’s quake powers. Then Cyke fires an optic blast at Magneto AFTER Wanda agrees to surrender to the X-Men. I could see Wolvie being that intent on payback, but Scott is usually more open-minded. Maybe Wanda wants to be punished so she’s subconsciously affecting Cyclops’ mood?
Also of note: this month the rest of the Marvel Universe started to catch up with the events of this 9 issue miniseries. Rictor used his recently returned powers in X-Factor #225. And with Bucky six feet under, Steve Rogers is back in his old Captain America duds again. Hopefully the upcoming Avengers Annual #1 will contain an explanation for Wonder Man’s presence alongside his former teammates. Last we saw Simon (in New Avengers Annual #1) – he was leading the Revengers‘ attack on the Avengers. Perhaps that will play out soon and restore him to the fold as well?

I think X-Factor’s appearance in Avengers: The Children’s Crusade probably marks the first time TWO male super couples have participated in a multi-team crossover within a mainstream comic (as much as I love them, Class Comics don’t count). With Rictor and Shatterstar hanging out with Wicaan and Shatterstar I’m hoping for an interesting conversation or two. SO much happens this issue that I had to post about it and include some spoilerific imagery – so I wanted to wait a few weeks from release so you would all have a chance to run out and pick up your copies at your local comic book shop… but enough stalling. Remember READ YOUR OWN COPY FIRST! You won’t be disappointed.
I think this issue offers the first solid evidence of a definitive chronological point for Avengers: The Children’s Crusade within Marvel continuity. We’ve seen Steve Rogers back in his Captain America togs since issue 1 – which sets Avengers: The Children’s Crusade AFTER Fear Itself due to Bucky’s recent untimely death… and the X-Men lineup seen below sets this mini-series BEFORE X-men Schism.
So we have Wanda recovering her memory, Rictor regaining his mutant status and the X-Men facing quite a dilemma. Can Wanda reactivate a million former mutants? Will the X-Men even trust her long enough to let her? If she does what will a mutant resurgence mean to the state of the Marvel U and it’s current “Heroic Age?”

The Witch is back! Memories, powers and all! It’s time for the next chapter in my favorite book of late. If only this Young Avengers maxiseries were a monthly. I LOVE Avengers: The Children’s Crusade – and not just for the regular spotlight on gay teen supercouple Hulkling and Wiccan. What’s not to love? Young Avengers! Avengers! Steve Rogers in his Cap togs again! X-Men! and now X-Factor too! PLUS: Wanda Maximoff – The Scarlet Witch! In the immortal words of Stan Lee himself… NUFF SAID.
THE SCARLET WITCH RETURNS WITH A VENGEANCE! With her memory and her powers finally restored, The Scarlet Witch returns to Avengers Mansion for a revealing reunion with Clint Barton and a fiery reckoning with the Avengers that provokes the Beast, Jessica Jones, and the mutant detectives of X-Factor to join the crusade. But will the Scarlet Witch continue the decimation she began in ‘House of M’? Or will she become the new mutant messiah?
I am eagerly anticipating Wanda retaking a place of prominence among the icons of this new “Heroic Age.” I just hope they redeem her and don’t make her into a true villain. The teaser for Issue of 7 of Avengers: The Children’s Crusade hints at all kinds of amazing revelations, including the “the secret history of her murderous rampage in Avengers: Disassembled” and “the origin of the Scarlet Witch’s godlike powers.”

The long wait for Allen Heinberg to return to the Young Avengers he created was certainly worth it. This series is delivering big-time. Wiccan has taken off on a secret recon mission to Doom’s Castle. He managed to bluff his way into meet his mysterious Mom (Wanda Maximoff – the Scarlet Witch) and found out she’s about the wed Doctor Doom himself. Then the rescue goes awry when the Groom shows up…
THE EPIC AVENGERS EVENT CONTINUES! Determined to rescue the Scarlet Witch from the clutches of Doctor Doom, Magneto, Quicksilver, and the Young Avengers form a covert strike force to infiltrate Doom’s kingdom. But their secret invasion of Latveria threatens to become an all-out war when the Avengers and Wonder Man stand in their way.
PLUS: the Scarlet Witch comes face to face with an enemy even deadlier than Doom who won’t rest until Wanda Maximoff is dead.
Sounds like Wolverine has found his way to Latveria and he wants to cut Wanda good! He seemed pretty determined to kill her when he was discussing it with the Avengers. If they don’t plan to kill Wanda, they should have benched him. If they do plan to off her… shame on them! Bad Avengers!

I love that the romantic gay relationship between the Young Avengers known as Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) and Hulkling (Teddy Altman) is such a big part of Avengers: The Children’s Cursade. I think they are even referencing their love MORE than I usually see with straight couples in comics. Hulkling’s defensiveness of Wiccan is very sweet. I don’t want to spoil any of the events of the issue – but these sequences were so great that I had to include a few panels and pages to tease it.

While the relationship between these super-boyfriends is at the forefront of the story, none of the Young Avengers ever react to it as if it were anything less than the most normal thing in the world. The reason this relationship between an alien hybrid and a mysterious young sorcerer is so special is precisely because no one treats it as if it is, not even Grandpa Magneto or Uncle Quicksilver (kind of expected a smart-ass asshole comment from Pietro). Glad they refrained. I wonder… are gypsies (who were often persecuted themselves) historically tolerant of gays?
Allen Heinberg – we’re glad you found the time to revisit your creations… the Young Avengers. This is my favorite book at the moment – If anyone isn’t reading it – grab the first 3 issues today when you pick up your other books.

Totally loving this so far. I’m so glad to have Young Avengers creators Allen Heinberg and Jim Cheung reunited on this 9 issue bi-monthly maxi series. I wish I had the patience to wait for the inevitable trade paperback version – because it will be a great read once all 9 chapters are assembled. However, there are so many dangling Young Avengers sub-plots to be revealed in this series, that I simply cannot handle an 18 month wait.
THE RETURN OF WANDA MAXIMOFF! The search for the Scarlet Witch is finally over as the Young Avengers find Wanda. But is she a hero or a villain? Is she still the Scarlet Witch?
The battle over Wanda rages on as Avengers go up against the Young Avengers, Magneto clashes with Quicksilver, Wonder Man battles Wolverine, and the most powerful villain in the Marvel Universe conspires against them all so that he can possess Wanda himself.
What could Dr. Doom be doing with Wanda? If he has her, how long has he had her? The only REAL Wanda signting I remember after her death is when a resurrected Clint Barton found her briefly when he came back. Was that a Doombot too?

I posted a mute preview of this last week, but now we have a version with some dialog and additional pages… I do wonder how Mags is going to react to his newfound gay grandson dating a Kree/Skrull hybrid.
THE RACE IS ON as the Avengers, the Young Avengers, and the X-Men compete to be the first to find the Scarlet Witch. When the Young Avengers discover the secret of Wanda Maximoff’s disappearance, the Avengers attempt to neutralize the Scarlet Witch before the Young Avengers can find her. But their efforts soon lead to an all-out war between the Avengers and the X-Men that only the Young Avengers can stop.

I was psyched to see Mags show up on the last page of the first issue. I’d been so focussed on the Scarlet Witch being Wiccan and Speed’s mom, that I forgot all about their grandfather (and uncle for that matter – did they talk to Pietro in Mighty Avengers?). Here are some unlettered preview images from #2!
Magneto confronts the two Young Avengers claiming to be his grand-children, in the hopes of finding his lost daughter, The Scarlet Witch. But he’s not the only one on her trail—the Avengers and the X-Men are both out looking to fulfill their own agendas.
Will they be able to work together or will the heroes of the Marvel Universe find themselves in another war over the Scarlet Witch? Find out in Avengers: Children’s Crusade #2!
I’m very glad to hear that the X-Men will be playing a part in this epic story as well. But questions abound… Where is Wanda? How will they find her? How will her old Avengers buddies feel about her when they do? How do the X-Men figure in? Do the mutants want/deserve revenge for M-Day?

I’ll be featuring whatever mainstream comics that I come across featuring LGBT characters and issues. Last week there were two mainstream Marvel comics with gay male characters in leading roles. In the first, our favorite teen gay couple, Hulkling and Wiccan will finally be getting some page time together in the 9 part, bi-monthly maxi-series starring the pair and their teammates in the Young Avengers as they begin a quest to find The Scarlet Witch. Since their creation, Marvel has really done an outstanding job of handling their sexuality in a nonchalant, matter of fact way that shows it to be no big deal.

To have Captain America literally say “I have no problem with that” and then have Jarvis make up their room sends an powerful message to the masses out there… Its OK to be gay. While you and I may know that, we don’t all live in San Francisco. I was a bit worried when Disney first bought Marvel, but with their pro-lgbt record (watch a few Family Channel shows sometime), I should have known better. Kudos to Marvel, Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung on the first chapter of a story that I can’t wait to see unfold. By the way… GREAT LAST PAGE on first issue! Who could it be? Think, who are potential blood relatives to Wiccan and Speed!
More on the 2nd title in a bit…

I’m a HUGE fan of the Young Avengers so this is by far the Heroic Age title that I’ve been most eagerly anticipating. Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch) will be a major part of the story and her relationship to twins Wiccan and Speed finally addressed head on, so it really is THE YA story we’ve all been awaiting. Here is an unlettered preview if the first issue which hits stores Thursday 7/8 due to the 4th of July mail delay.
From original Young Avengers creators Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung comes a new tale chronicling the Scarlet Witch’s return to the Marvel U. With three words, the Scarlet Witch changed everything. So what will she do next?
Did Hulkling really kiss that terrorist as a diversion? A bit surprised they’d go there. I love that it is a 9 issue epic, but HATE that it is bi-monthly. It’s going to take 18 months to tell IF THEY CAN STICK TO THE SCHEDULE.

Fans of the original Young Avengers creative team of Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung will be happy to hear the pair are finally reuniting for a 9 issue limited series featuring the team they created. The concepts for Avengers: The Children’s Crusade were originally planned for Young Avengers with Scarlet Witch, and will “address the question of parentage.”

Heinberg: The story is largely told from Wiccan’s point of view, and it attempts to explore the idea that sometimes the line between hero and villain is a very thin one, depending on which side you’re standing on. In my experience, no one is ever purely good or purely evil. The Scarlet Witch is a perfect example. She’s always been a ambiguous figure in the Marvel Universe. She started out as part of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, then she became an Avenger, then she tried to destroy the Avengers. So, in the end, is she a hero or a villain? Jim and I thought it was important the Young Avengers wrestle with the idea that, even in a super-powered world of ostensible heroes and villains, it’s not always easy to tell one from the other.
Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch and the Avengers play an enormous role in the story (YAY!!!) which involves not only Avengers, but the mutant community as well. Expect some exciting fallout from as far back as House of M, Decimation AND Disassembled. Issue number six is being currently scripted. All nine scripts should be done by July (which could be the first issue date). It’s “emotional and intimate” for a big event. I hope this really brings the Scarlet Witch back to the forefront of the Marvel U.

Starting a new feature spotlighting LGBT characters new and old alike! I’ll begin with two of the most popular recent characters to be outed…
4 color gay couple Theodore "Teddy" Altman (a.k.a. Hulkling) and William "Billy" Kaplan (a.k.a. Wiccan – originally called Asgardian) first appeared in April 2005 in Marvel Comics Young Avengers #1 written by Allan Heinberg and illustrated by Jim Cheung. The names they debuted with are a bit misleading as Hulkling ihas no relationship to the gamma powered Hulk, but is actually the Kree/Skrull hybrid son of Captain Marvel and the Skrull Princess Anelle with super strength, super healing, and shape-shifting abilities. Wiccan’s sorcerous pedigree is no less impressive in that he and his newly discovered speedster twin brother are the long-thought-imaginary sons of the Scarlet Witch (but who’s their daddy? Maybe Mephisto!)!
 |
A romantic link was subtly hinted at early on in the Young Avengers series, more obviously suggested at when the team was choosing new names and Kate Bishop tells Billyhe he needs a new name that won’t be a "national joke when the press finds out about him and Teddy" (Ass-guardian), and finally fully stated in the second arc when Billy’s very supportive and sweet parents get a little confused when the boys are trying to tell them they are super heroes. There are more instances, and details but I wouldn’t want to spoil your reading.
Although their committed romantic relationship between two gay teens on a super hero team is still very unique in the world of mainstream comics, more and more characters have been popping out of the 4 color closet lately. A trend of which I whole-heartedly approve! Rumor has it that originally creator Heinberg didn’t think Marvel would let him have a gay couple on the team, so he planned Hulkling as a female who used a male form to intimidate enemies, but kept him male once he got the gay go ahead.
The boys romance hasn’t progressed that far physically – they ARE teen characters and therefore fictional role models so I understand Marvel taking it slow. While they have been seen sitting clothed on the same bed, heard expressing affection and shown embracing in a loving manner, it was Peter David’s X-Factor that gave Marvel it’s first male same sex kiss with the more mature characters of Shatterstar and Rictor. Hopefully Teddy and Billy will get a chance to smooch in the Avengers: Childrens Crusade project Heinberg is supposedly brewing for Summer 2010.
The entire Young Avengers series is available in 2 trade paperback volumes, Sidekicks and Family Matters. The subsequent Young Avengers Presents was a six-issue mini-series with each focusing on a different Young Avenger and has also been collected as a trade. Although Marvel’s commitment to letting series creator Allan Heinberg pen the next series has delayed another regular title, each of Marvel’s recent "events" have given us another Young Avengers mini-series… During Civil War and Secret Invasion the team shred billing with the Runaways, but they got their own Dark Reign mini series pitting then against a new team of rebel "Young Avengers" whose roster comes across more like the Young Masters of Evil. These 3 mini’s were collected as well. Links are above.

Although we are in for some Daken-on-Hulkling action during the finale of the YA miniseries, Wiccan doesn’t have anything to worry about. Teddy really is true blue (er green) and immune to the pheremonal charms of Wolverine’s tattooed bisexual bad boy offspring. Now if only he can do something about the slashing claws.
So can the Young Avengers and those who would be Young Avengers form one big happy group? Can either of them live under Norman Osborn’s rules? Will blood out? Will guilt win? Will Speed and Coat or won’t they? It’s the end. And lots of terrible stuff happens. And everything ends in tatters.
I can’t wait to see where this leaves the Young Avengers gang. It’s been announced that creator Allen Heinberg has a YA project coming.

I’m thinking the identity of the next Sorcerer Supreme may remain up in the air for another issue or two (we still have a lot of candidates to check in on), but I’m enjoying the ride as we get closer to the answer…
WHO WILL BE THE NEXT SORCERER SUPREME? And will he or she survive the initiation? The Avengers fight a battle that they know will shape the future of the Marvel Universe for years to come!

So now we know that Dormammu is behind The Hood, making him more powerful than we previously thought and a potential contender for Sorcerer Supreme. Can Dr. Strange stand against him and how much help will an untested newbie like Wiccan be?
Who is the new Sorcerer Supreme? The entire Marvel Universe hangs in the balance as the Avengers race to help the fallen Doctor Strange battle the forces of the Dark Dimension as they make their earthly power play.
I think Wiccan will be an important part of this developing story, but I don’t think he will end up with Strange’s mantle just yet.
What do you think of Chris Bachalo’s art? I loved his original run on Shade the Changing Man and his work on Generation X, but his more recent X-Men art didn’t do much for me (I found it hard to follow). I’m hoping he is more successful with this arc because I DO love the style of his images.

New Avengers #51
I’m SO happy to see the Young Avengers being absorbed into the collective. I’d be HAPPIER if they had their own onging too, but I’ll keep hoping. It’s good to see Wiccan and his Mom The Scarlet Witch getting some attention again. How cool would it be if Billy becomes Dr. Strange‘s protege and a regular member of the line-up! With training I’m sure he’ll be Sorcerer Supreme himself one day. But I think it is too soon, as Billy still has a lot to learn about himself and his own abilities. I don’t think he’s really in the running this time around. But if the wrong choice is made, I’m sure he’ll be one of the ones to see it righted.
Doctor Strange has failed as the Master of the Mystic Arts and all the other mystic characters or Marvel Comics are potentials heirs apparent. Strange comes to the New Avengers for help as the mystic battle royale begins. Plus, how can the Avengers trust Spider-Man if he won’t take his mask off?
Tho, Billy Kaplan was looking a bit more fem than usual in his appearance in the last 2 preview pages. He was never a big macho guy or anything – but he wasn’t QUITE that skinny before, was he? And he walks around in a cape on his off time? Really? I don’t think so.
AMUSING COMMENT OF THE DAY @ Newsarama: “It is me or does it look like Burt Reynolds is trying to hit on Billy?
”
We know that a new Sorcerer Supreme will be named during the Dark Reign. I fear if evil keeps winning the day, it may be The Hood and / or Dormammu wearing that mantle. THOUGHTS? Other possibile candidates include: Doctor Strange’s former paramour Clea, Sorcerer Supreme wanna-be Ian McNee, The recently returned Scarlet Witch, bisexual sorceress Jennifer Kale, former (?) ruler of Limbo Illyana Rasputin, Latverian tyrant Doctor Doom, Haïti’s houngan supreme Brother Voodoo and longtime Doctor Strange enemy Baron Mordo.
Fears are in part due to the Hood and the Eye of Agamotto on cover to next months New Avengers #52. Combine with the recent revelation that Dormammu is the demonic power behind the Hoods origin and… well not GOOD news.

UPDATE: Good issue. I read it after Ms Marvel #37 so the scene with Carol and Clint made me sad. Not many major revelations other than Peter Parker is Spiderman. But then again everyone knew that. Oh yeah, they didn’t. Well now the New Avengers do. Even if Wiccan left when Strange said to he would have stuck around, so I hope he’s just out of frame on the last page.
