Were The World Mine - a fanboi review

Monday, December 1st, 2008

OK I admit I’m a bit of a sap for musicals. I have a heroin-like addiction to the moment where an especially powerful piece of music gives me goosebumps and makes the hair on my arms stand up on end, and Were the World Mine delivered a few of those.

Its gotten rave reviews all over and loads of publicity (I found write ups in every gay rag I checked - but as a small gay themed musical - I figure it can use all the good press it can get. LOVED IT!

It is the Story of an out(cast) gay teen named Timothy (Tanner Cohen) at an all-boy prep school. His only allies are his gal pal Frankie (Zelda Williams), best friend Max (Ricky Goldman and drama teacher Ms. Tebbit (Wendy Robie - whom you may remember as Twin Peaks‘ one eyed strongwoman and silent drape inventor Nadine Hurley). That info plus the trailer - see below - was enough to get me in the theater seat and I’m glad I went.

Ms. T’s actions and words make hers a dual role, as (in my humble opinion) she is also Titania, queen of the fairies (its the only explanation of where the magic comes from). She involves Timothy in the Senior production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the role of Puck, and soon he’s not just acting. Timothy discovers the magic of Shakespere’s love potion pansy to turn much of the town gay.

The scenes are beautifully filmed and the actors voices are amazing (especially the leads - Tanner Cohen and Nathanial David Becker in his film debut as Jonathon - school rugby superstar and town royalty) Some of the choreography can get on the cheesy side at times, but I think its meant to be tongue in cheek (especially the rugby ballet - yes I said rugby ballet). I loved it… and if you are on the romantic side and might enjoy a good gay coming of age musical in the form of a Shakespeare parody - then race to the theater.

Above are a couple of videos of the boys of Were the World Mine. One of Director Tom Gustafson, and stars Tanner Cohen and Nathaniel David Becker and the other is an interesting Tanner Cohen (who apparently is 6 foot 4 - wow - he’s a big boy) interview.

I originally posted this with a few other videos from WayOutWestTV, but on second viewing it deserves its very own post. So if you didn’t watch it before, then waste no time. Click play check out the official for Were the World Mine. The Advocate says “HEDWIG had better MOVE OVER.” Now that may be a bit of hype as this doesn’t seem quite as rock-n-roll. but I for one, will not miss this movie. I’m officially intrigued.

If you had a love-potion, who would you make fall madly in love with you?

Timothy, prone to escaping his dismal high school reality through dazzling musical daydreams, gets to answer that question in a very real way. After his eccentric teacher casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he stumbles upon a recipe hidden within the script to create the play’s magical, purple love-pansy. Armed with the pansy, Timothy’s fading spirit soars as he puckishly imposes a new reality by turning much of his narrow-minded town gay, beginning with the rugby-jock of his dreams. Ensnaring family, friends and enemies in this heart-wrenching chaos, Timothy forces them to walk a mile in his musical shoes. The course of true love never did run smooth, but by the end of this moving musical comedy of errors based on director Tom Gustafson’s prolific award-winning short film, Fairies, the bumpy ride comes to a heartfelt conclusion. With vibrant imagery, a first-rate ensemble cast and innovative music rivaling the best of pop/ rock and contemporary Broadway, Were the World Mine attempts to push modern gay cinema and musical film beyond expectation.
