The events of Schism have literally divided the X-Men into two camps. A Sentinel attack on Utopia was the catalyst that brought about the shift. Regenesis shows us what happens next. Cyclops believes that the X-Men’s responsibility to young mutants goes beyond simple training. Like his chronologically older, currently dead son Cable, he’s come to believe that Mutantkind needs soldiers not students.

Wolverine, on the other hand feels the kids should have a chance to be kids. So he’s gathering up as many as he can and returning to the Xavier Institute in Westchester County. Whose side would you choose?

Marvel released these Blue team (Team Cyclops) and Gold team (Team Wolverine) covers weeks ago, but with many of the characters in black silhouette to keep us fanboys guessing. They showed a few versions – each revealing more X-Men, but now we know for sure who’s heading back east…

TEAM CYCLOPS: Avalanche, Colossus, the Cuckoos, Cypher, Dani Moonstar, Danger, Dazzler, Dr. Nemesis, Domino, Emma Frost, Hope Summers (and her Generation Hope crew sans Idie), Madison Jeffries, Magik, Magma, Magneto, Namor, Psylocke (head of Utopia security and defense), Storm, Sunspot, Warpath, X-Man.

TEAM WOLVERINE: Anole, Beast, Blindfold, Cannonball, Chamber, Dust, Frenzy, Gambit, Husk, Iceman, Idie, Kitty Pryde, Pixie (not confirmed but likely) Quentin Quire, Rachel Summers, Rockslide, Rogue, Toad (school janitor), X-23. PLUS most of the kids and the big pink gelatin blob with skeleton.

Other surprises: AoA Nightcrawler on X-Force. He may not be 616 Kurt Wagner, but his daughter Nocturne should be pleased to see Dad if she ever returns from the Crystal Palace. Maybe he’ll look up the 616 equivelent of her mom now that Wanda’s back too? Havok and Polaris are going to land in Peter David’s backyard over at X-Factor Investigations. Where’s Pixie? I’m betting Utopia. Looking at the New Mutants cover… two thoughts occur to me. First, Nate Grey really DOESN’T own a shirt – let’s hope no one gives him one. And second, since when can Magma fly?

I haven’t had a chance to pick up my books this week, but expect an update on the final issue of Uncanny X-Men (#544) once I do.

With DC garnering all kinds of publicity for their DCnU stunt, Marvel must be hurting a bit for attention. Even I have to admit things have been focused on the DCnU around here lately – so here is news from the other camp. Not be be outdone, Marvel has announced the FINAL issue of flagship X-title – Uncanny X-Men (first published in September 1963) will be #544 due out in October.

All things must come an end…even for the X-Men, and this October fans will bear witness the end of an era as UNCANNY X-MEN #544 concludes the long running series. It’s all come to this! Years in the making, the seeds of dissent finally bear fruit as the events of X-Men: Schism tear the X-Men and the Marvel Universe apart! When the dust settles, the state of mutantkind will irreparably be changed forever. Don’t miss the historic final issue of the longest running X-Men title this October, in UNCANNY X-MEN #544!

X-Men: Schism will feature Cyclops and Wolverine having an ideological disagreement in the wake of the return of Quentin “Kid Omega” Quire, the nihilist mutant punk from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s “Riot at Xavier’s” arc of New X-Men. He will presumably do something Very, Very Bad, which will lead to the confrontation between the two popular characters.

What does this mean? Besides MONTHS of gripes, groans and flamewars from faithful fans? The X-universe is about to be rocked by “Schism” – some terrible threat descends upon mutantkind and Cyclops and Wolverine’s opinions about what to do differs so much that it causes the mutants to be “United” no more. I’m guessing that instead of Uncanny we’ll get at least 2 new titles – with 1 book for Cyke’s team and another for Logan’s.

The X-Men, New Mutants and X-Force have quite a time ahead of them. MMXI is the imprint for Marvel’s "Year of the X-Men" tie in. And what a year it looks like… Last week saw a number of teaser articles focusing on development for The New Mutants, Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny X-Force, X-Men Legacy, X-Men and a few other titles that comprise the X-Universe. Most Noeable is the shot of Uncanny X-Force vs the X-Men of the Age of Apocalypse. Looks like interdimensional fun!

Some things to look forward to seeing in pages of Marvel’s Mutant books in 2011 (in no particular order)… aftermath from the Age of X, Nate Grey, a.k.a. If like me, you anted that beautiful New Mutants image by Marko Djurdevic large enough to make into your desktop pattern… FEAR NOT here is what you want! He did those beautiful wraparound painted Avengers covers and a lot of the recent anniversary titles as well. Mr. Djurdevic is on fire.

I don’t see how Magneto is this powerful. Without aid of any special machinery or even entering orbit he is able to make Kitty do a 180 and bring her to a stop safely where she can be rescued. Agent Brand of S.W.O.R.D. had no way to rescue her with all her intergalactic contacts and Mags does it by meditating for a few days?

She’s been gone for a long time, but she’s coming back. This isn’t a hoax. This isn’t a joke. KITTY PRYDE is back in this over-sized special issue of UNCANNY X-MEN.

Colossus will be so happy! And so am I. Kitty’s always been favorite of mine. Her introductory adventure with Marvels merry mutants was the first Uncanny X-Men issues I ever read.

All the X-blogs are abuzz with talk of the the big X-Men Event to follow on the heels of Necrosha… Second Coming crosses over into X-Men (Uncanny & Legacy), X-Factor, X-Force and New Mutants. The X-Men have their hands full with the technarch-infected mutant-hating/hunting AI entity known as Bastion back yet again to bedevil them. PLUS it looks now that A Girl Named Hope is over and she and Cable are back from the future, the Phoenix is back too. but is Hope Summers really Jean? If so, what, reincarnated? Hope WAS born in Alaska… could she be Madelyne Pryor’s or some Summers/Grey genetic experiment of Mister Sinister’s – he DID come after her before Rogue killed him (and his seemingly short-lived return as Miss Sinister). And if the girl known as Hope Summers IS the Phoenix, does that mean Bishop was right to want her dead? Is she fated to save or damn mutankind? Only time and these stories will tell.

All will unite. One will rise. One will die. One will lead. One will sacrifice. Your thoughts? Mine after the Marvel teaser images…

All will unite – the disparate x-teams will come together. One will rise – will Hope be the return of Phoenix or Dark Phoenix (was Bishop right)? One will die – I’m guessing Cable. One will lead – not sure if it is Emma or Mags – I think Scott may be too broken by his son Nathan’s death (if I’m right) and need some time. One will sacrifice… hmmm Not sure what the sacrifice will be… Maybe Nathan gives his life to save Hope’s… any other theories?

With this crossover running through all the major X-Titles: Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy, New Mutants, X-Force and even the usually somewhat unplugged X-Factor, it is a MAJOR event. And with longtime x-foe Bastion as the big bad and specials showcasing the X-Men’s resident supergeniuses (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1) and a 3-issue miniseries chronicling an ill-timed side-battle in Limbo (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1), we may just have to wait awhile to find out if Hope Summer will we absolutely corrupted by her newfound power or not. The void is now in the mind of Scott Summers and Magneto is making deals with Namor as Beast announces a decision. Strangely enough there are no reanimated mutants running around this title. Must be a big island.

Cyclops takes a voyage into the head of Emma Frost in hopes of containing the horrifying piece of the villainous Void that has been stuck there since UTOPIA. Can they possibly defeat the awfulness that has haunted the most powerful being in the Marvel U?

Tensions are rising on Utopia as the X-Men deal with the new members of their team and the fact that the island is…well…sinking

I guess Beast is off orbital adventures to the pages of S.W.O.R.D for awhile?

Some fascinating hints of whats in store for the x-universe… The XU (X-Men Legacy, X-Force, New Mutants) is apoppin with zombies doing the bidding of wanna-be-goddess Selene in the first real X-Event of 2010… Necrosha. But its far from the last as Hope is still on her way back from the future and Nate Grey is back so there are all kinds of possibilities for mutants in 2010!

I don’t know about this group of bads… their names are dumb… Lobe and Thug? and a naked French assassin who is invisible in directly sunlight names Verre (French for glass). Is that the best you can do? Really?

THE STORY: …CLASSIFIED… The effects of UTOPIA are felt here! One of the original X-Men makes his exit!

As for who leaves… I’m guessing Beast isn’t pleased with the all the secrets and lies that have been a matter of course for awhile now.

Next Issue: MAGNETO! At least it looks like it from the cover, but you never know (they never did satisfactorily explain the who the Magneto was that menaced New York while huffing MGH and killed Phoenix before Wolvie decapitated him).

We’re getting closer and closer to seeing the whole puzzle of whats been going on in the minds of Scott Summers and Emma Frost. You just know Scott has something good planned. He’ll have to with the arsenal of super psychos that Norman Osborn has aimed at the X-Men.

The climactic conclusion to the crossover event of 2009 is here! This is it, the final battle for the Dark Avengers and the X-Men that will change the status quo for the Marvel Universe.

Emma Frost’s betrayal comes home to roost. Cyclops’ plan clicks into place, but is it too late? What can the X-Men do against the Sentry and Ares?

After this we have Dark X-Men: The Confession with more loose ends and secrets between Scott and Emma coming out, and then we’ll be ready for the Dark X-men mini that reintroduces Nate Grey to Marvel Universe 616′s continuity.

I’m looking forward to seeing exactly HOW the X-Men (Dark or otherwise) will deal with this situation. I’m thinking maybe Emma will take the Sentry away from Norman? With Ares on his side, the X-Men need a serious heavy hitter on theirs.

UTOPIA rages on! Norman Osborn’s victory in San Francisco is cemented when the Dark X-Men succeed where the X-Men can’t. All the while the Dark Avengers
are forced to watch from the sidelines. But how long will Bullseye and Ares sit idle?

After the Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men crossover comes to a head in Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus, According to Chris Yost, Emma Frost will put all her cards on the table and tell Cyclops about her part in Norman Osborn’s Dark Reign cabal in Dark X-Men: The Confession.

I think Scott’s secret team of killer X-Men (X-Force) will also come out in the wash. I don’t know how anyone expected him to keep a lid on that.

Part of me still thinks Scott knew the whole time. If she didn’t tell him, I’m sure she had a good reason. Well not THAT sure – she WAS a first class villain, but I think she likes things on the sunny side so I don’t think she was REALLY out for herself – more likely she saw Norman abusing his newfound authority to form dangerous alliances and felt that mutants NEEDED to be represented. She knew no one from Scott’s camp was capable of seating at THAT table so she took her rightful position. I don’t believe for 1 second she was EVER on Norman’s side, and neither will Scott – at least IMHO.
