George Pérez’ self-homage Blackest Night #3 cover

Those of you who have been following the events of Blackest Night know that former Titan betrayer Tara Markov pays a pivotal role in Blackest Night Titans. In a move sure to incite a fanboy frenzy, DC asked the artist who created Terra to whip up this wicked homage to his legendary original cover to Teen Titans #30 (the issue Terra joined) as an alternate cover to Blackest Night Titans #3 (of 3) – due 10/28.

Who better to homage the cover to NEW TEEN TITANS (vol. 1) #30 than its original artist George Pérez? He even did a baby Black Lantern Wildebeest on the logo! And Hi-Fi Design knocked the coloring out of the park. You might see Pérez and Hi-Fi team up again on another Titans project in 2010. Stay tuned!

As usual the details are flawless. We have BL Hawk instead of Robin, BL Phantasm in Cyborg’s place, BL Pantha and BL Baby Wildebeest in the place of Starfire and Changeling, BL Tula and BL Lilith stand in for Donna and Raven, and Tempest in Kid Flash’s position. A terrifyingly beautiful cover.

Blackest Night Titans #3 of 3 (George Perez alternate cover) New Teen Titans #30

Unlike some who just don’t seem to get that the fun of Blackest Night is that it is terrifying, I am TRULY enjoying this cosmic crossover event. I cannot tell you the last time I audibly exclaimed OH SHIT! while reading a comic. The horrifying aspect of what the Black Lanterns are up to isn’t just inciting emotional responses in the heroes, it has my heart pounding as I turn the page. I cannot remember when a comic EVER had this kind of effect. If you aren’t reading it, START! All the Blackest Night minis have been excellent thus far, but Blackest Night : Titans is the best (not to mention the best Titans-related book to hit stands in a number of years).

Blackest Night: Titans #2 of 3 B&W PREVIEW

Since we first found out the concept behind Blackest Night, it was obvious that the Titans would have a worse time of it than most teams due to their long list of fallen members. The first issue of their part of this epic tale did not disappoint and from the looks of these pages the 2nd part just gets better/more terrifying.

Blackest Night: Titans #2 Blackest Night: Titans #2 Blackest Night: Titans #2

Donna Troy deals with Black Lantern versions of her long dead husband – Terry Long and baby Robert (WTF? he wasn’t a baby – he was 3 when he died). Plus after Omen’s illusion is interrupted, Gar does his best to stop first love Terra from ripping out his heart literally (she’s already done it figuratively). Oh yeah, it also looks like the new Hawk has lost her heart to the original. Dove managed to avoid being touched by one Black Lantern Hawk, how will she far against two?

With top notch story and characterization by JT Krul and dazzling art by Ed Benes, Blackest Night: Titans is definitely one of the do not miss aspects of this series.

Blackest Night: Titans #1 – Pencil Preview

Blackest Night: Titans #1 Blackest Night: Titans #2 Blackest Night: Titans #3

The BLACKEST NIGHT is upon us, and every corner of the DCU is rife with reanimated heroes and villains. No one is unaffected, but some teams — like the TITANS — have seen more than their share of death. On August 26th, the first issue of BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS from writer J.T. Krul and former cheesecake artist Ed Benes hits the stands. Don’t miss it as the Teen and adult Titans come face to face with the deadly embrace of revenant friends, loved ones and enemies.

Here is a preview of Ed Benes ( Gen¹³, Birds of Prey, Supergirl, Superman, and Justice League of America.)

Almost didn’t recognize Changeling without color.

Ed Benes pencils from Blackest Night: Titans #1 Ed Benes pencils from Blackest Night: Titans #1 Ed Benes pencils from Blackest Night: Titans #1

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS editor Brian Cunningham was kind of enough to give us the skinny on the mini-series. Take it away, Brian:

“Working on these characters is something Ed Benes has wanted for a very long time, so we are more than happy to oblige him! And he has a wonderful script to draw from. J.T. Krul worked closely with Geoff Johns to stay true to the spirit of the ‘Blackest Night’ event, and what they came up with is a horror movie on paper. I really feel both ‘Blackest Night’ fans and Titans fans will be VERY happy with this mini-series.”

I REALLY am enjoying this event thus far. In all it’s issues, Final Crisis never delivered 1 tenth of the menace, terror and anticipation of the first issue of Blackest Night. I LOVED Blackest Night: Superman #1 and with all the potential Black Lanterns of the Titans, this should be exponentially enjoyable!

If Robin Were Gay… or Teen Titans vs Avenue Q

Someone FINALLY found a good use for all the footage left in the wake of the multi-season trainwreck that was the TEEN TITANS anime style cartoon. Add some Avenue Q soundtrack and instant web classics! I couldn’t find a Teen Titans version of Schadenfreude (but I’ll have settle for the Spongebob version for now.

I wasn’t a fan of the TEEN TITANS series. As a huge fan of the Perez/Wolfman Teen Titans I found the overly kiddy cartoon to be a slap in the face. Especially on the heels of the uberawesome JLU cartoon which managed to be liked by children and adult fans alike. The Brave and the Bold, while still having a very stylized look to it, still manages to appeal to both demographics.

But as an avid Avenue Q fan, I approve of this usage.

How many Titans will join the Black Lanterns?

Of all supergroups in the history of comics, The Teen Titans seem to have the largest group of honored dead. And it gonna bit them in the ass this summer when the Black Lanterns come to town. We’ve seen the cover sporting Changeling embracing a dead Terra. Who else is going to show up???

The dead are (alphabetically): Anima, Aquagirl (Tula) Baby Wildebeest, Bushido, Danny Chase, Dove (Don Hall), Duela Dent, Gnarrk, Hawk (Hank Hall), Kole, Lightning, Molecule, Omen (Lilith Clay), Osiris, Pantha, Power Boy, Terra I, Terra II and Thunder

Anima was Killed in Faces of Evil: Prometheus one-shot Aquagirl (Tula) died in Crisis on Infinite Earths #10 Baby Wildebeest was killed in Infinite Crisis #4 Bushido was killed in Infinite Crisis #4
Danny Chase died and became Phantasm in New Teen Titans #84 Dove (1) died in Crisis on Infinite Earths #12 Duela Dent a.k.a. Harlequin a.k.a. Joker's Daughter was killed by a Monitor in Countdown #51 Gnarrk was revealed as dead in Tales of the Teen Titans #50
Hawk a.k.a. Monarch a.k.a. Extant died in JSA #15 Kole died in Crisis on Infinite Earths #12 Lightning died with his brother Thunder in Salvation Run #7 Molecule dies in Terror Titans #1
Lilith Clay a.k.a. Omen died in Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day #3 Osiris was eaten by Sobek in 52 #43. Pantha was killed in Infinite Crisis #4 Power Boy was killed in Titans East Special #1
Tara Markov a.k.a. Terra (I) died in Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #3 Also known as Tara Markov, Terra (II) was killed by Black Adam during World War III Thunder died with his brother Lightning in Salvation Run #7

I left off the recently resurrected Superboy and Kid Flash although since they were brought back in the future, couldn’t they still be Black Lanterns in the present? I also left off a hoard of other previously dead Titans who have since been revived, or retconned to life: Jericho, Raven, Donna Troy, Jason Todd, Golden Eagle, Bombshell and Young Frankenstein.

So do you think ALL these dead Titans are going to descend upon Titans Tower like a cosmic zombie super-plague? I hope they paid their insurance premiums this month. I bet they went up after Ravager blew up half the place to take out the Terror Titans.

Teen Titans #69: The New Deal Finale

At this point no surprises here, but next week, at long last the Teen Titans get a new line-up. From the cover, it looks like Aquagirl, Static, Bombshell, Miss Martian and Kid Eternity will be joining Wonder Girl, Blue Beetle and Red Devil on the front lines for the upcoming Vigilante/Titans/Teen Titans crossover… Deathtrap! Having M’gan back will be good for the team as it has been lacking is power with recent defections.

Get ready for the debut of the new Teen Titans line-up! What surprising heroes show up as part of the team? Who made the cut and who got sent home? And where do they go from here?

Those of you who haven’t enjoyed the recent ride should be happy to hear that Sean McKeever is abandoning writing the main series after issue #71. I haven’t minded so much and actually enjoyed the Wonderdog subplot. I’m also inrigued that the ailing Wendy is the daughter of the Calculator who blames the Titans for her injuries. McKeever will still write the Ravager back-up stories that will be included with Teen Titans as of issue 72. I hope they bring her back into the Titan’s fold.

In Case You Missed It… 030209

There have been a lot of spoilerific events going on in comics lately so I thought I would start up a new feature covering major news from recent titles. If you are the sort of person who desn’t want to know what is happening before you read something, then do not click on the images below until you read all your comics.

Hal Jordan was overcome by rage and became a Red Lantern A Blue Lanern ring burned out the Red infection, but what is he now? A Blue-Green Lantern? Clint Barton exposes Norman Osborn to the news in The New Avengers Clint Barton exposes Norman Osborn to the news in The New Avengers
Madrox explains to himself about how he aborbed the baby dupe that Siryn was carrying Layla Miller is back and all grown up. Suddenly her prediction about marrying Madrox isn’t all that ridiculous? Kid Flash is alive again in the future, but does he return to the past? Mon-el is out of the Phantom Zone, now if they only had the anti-lead serum that Brainiac 5 invented.
Acolyet Fever Pitch went nove because Leper Queen is using Mutants as bombs Norman Osborn successfully punked the president. With the help of his new Thunderbolts, he made DocSampson out to be a dangerous nutjob. The Sentry ripped Morgan LeFay''''s fucking head off! And yet she is still going to have the Dark Avengers for breakfast
Justice took the body of MVP to return it to his family Brainiac 5 downloaded a file into Supergirl''''s mind for his ancestor Querl Dox Lady Loki tricked Thor into killing his magically returned grandfather and got him expelled from Asgard - which she wants to move to Latveria Red Devil and Kid Eternity shared an uncomfortable hug as Kid stops Red from selling his soul AGAIN.

Lots of stuff happening! I will add some comments going over my thoughts on some of there events and what they may mean for their respective titles… So please speak up and add your own and make it a conversation!

Teen Titans #68 – To Hell and (hopefully) back!

Since the not so new Brother Blood took a bite outta Red Devil, his powers have been down. This issue Kid Eternity is going to help him get them back. Problem is they have to go to Hell to do it…

Is it just me or is Kid Eternity kinda sexy? Am I just projecting or is he a potential Friend of Northstar? Maybe it is just because he managed to keep his supermodel hair looking so fabulous despite the lack of product in Hell, or maybe it is the red sash belt and leather boots. But I’m not the first to think so

Kid Eternity is back in this issue featuring an “Origins and Omens” backup tale! But is he here to stay? In part 3 of “The New Teen Titans,” learn how the Kid’s struggle with the Lords of Chaos and Order has progressed, why his abilities are on the fritz and how his arrival creates major problems for his teammates!

Here is a torrent to issues 1-16 of the early 90’s Kid Eternity series from DC’s Vertigo imprint.

Jericho has 2 sets of Titans in a Deathrap

News of this came out awhile ago, but I wanted to sit on it until the last 2 covers in the 5 part polytych were revealed so I could assemble the complete image for you. The “Deathtrap” crossover runs in “Teen Titans Annual 2009,” “Titans” #12-13, “Vigilante” #5 and “Teen Titans” #70-71.

Following the events of “Teen Titans Annual 2009,” on sale April 1, writers Sean McKeever and Marv Wolfman team-up with artists Fernando Dagnino and Raul Fernandez to tell a five-part crossover in the pages of “Teen Titans,” “Titans” and “Vigilante.” The story is part of DC Comics’ Faces of Evil campaign, whereby whereby the villains of the DC Universe take center stage in a series of one-shots and special issues of existing series.

Covers to crossover issues involved in the upcoming Titans Deathrap arc

In the story called “Deathtrap,” the featured Face of Evil is none other than Jericho, a former Titan and the son of classic Titans supervillain, Deathstroke the Terminator, whose plan of attack is to eliminate both teams of Titans in one fell swoop.

I’ve been liking Teen Titans a lot better than Titans lately – I’m eagerly anticipating seeing the new line-up (allegedly Static, Bombshell, Blue Beetle, Miss Martian, Kid Eternity, Wonder Girl, Kid Devil and Aquagirl) in action. I hope Ravager ends up on their side of the line as well. I””m a big fan of Rose Wilson.

Time for a membership drive! Any guesses on who the new Teen Titans will be? I recognize some of the heroes on the cover (Supergirl, Spoiler, Bombshell, Speedy and Misfit) but not all (not sure who the flying girl with the staff and guy with the helmet are… but the guy with the cat is Klarion the Witch Boy after a really awkward growth spurt. When is Kid Eternity showing up?

Teen guest stars galore! With only four members left, it’s time for the Teen Titans to hold a recruitment drive! Who will make the cut, and who will be sent packing? Who will refuse to even show up, and who will bring a boatload of trouble with them?

Terror Titans #3 of 6 – Daddy Issues

Most legacy teams have some sort of daddy issues, and this team is no exception. I’m intrigued with the Terror Titans (though I hate the name) for some reason – Some like Copperhead and the new all bitchy Persuader are more throwaway than others (it looks like this issue might explain some of her issues). I Like Clock King, am interested in the story behind Bolt’s brat (Dreadbolt) and have ALWAYS loved Rose Wilson as Ravager so I’m following along closely. Plus this issue sees the DC New Earth debut of Milestone Media’s teen hero Static!

Dreadbolt faces a terrible decision, and his choice could elevate him in the Clock King’s eyes – but at an unthinkable cost. Meanwhile, the tournament between teen metas continues, and the fate of the winners and losers becomes clearer as the Clock King’s ultimate plan comes to light.

Ravager’s role in the plan also becomes clearer, and she is beginning to openly rebel. So, to sweeten the deal, she is granted the honor of fighting the Dark Side Club’s hidden and true champion – one she could never have expected!

I was pleasantly surprised when i walked into Whatever yesterday and saw the New Teen Titans Judas Contract figures hanging there. Or at least I saw a few Terminators and 1 Robin. Everything else was spoken for or sold already. luckily I reserved my Terra and Jericho weeks ago.
