Catching up with… LGBT in Comics

Posts will still be spotty for awhile, but I’m back. The number of mainstream comics titles featuring LGBT characters has skyrocketed since I began this blog in April of 2008 with the intent of spotlighting LGBT heroes, villains and supporting characters. Between new characters surfacing and old favorites being retconned, it was inevitable I’d miss a few important stories while I was busy stealing the life of a more successful me from an alternate dimension, so I’m going to try and catch up now… BEWARE SPOILERS ABOUND and PLEASE COMMENT IF I LEFT ANYTHING OUT – or if you just want to discuss how cool it is to have heroic LGBT representation in 10 titles on the racks at every comic store! (well 9 after the end of Avengers Academy). If you want Marvel and DC to keep it up… START BUYING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TITLES IF YOU AREN’T ALREADY!!! If we buy them, they may keep making them.

Astonishing X-Men #51

I mentioned Northstar‘s Astonishing X-Men nuptials before they occurred but I was too occupied with “moving details” by the actual wedding date to blog about it. The event went off like clockwork despite the telepathic machinations of Susan Hatchi (Karma’s half-sister) and Jean-Paul’s Sh’iar teammate Warbird’s protests. The reception afterward was a total blast until Wolverine exploded.

Life With Archie #24 Life With Archie #24 Life With Archie #24 Life With Archie #24

Kevin Keller‘s solo series is wholesome, sweet and funny. It simultaneously manages the difficult task of empowering LGBT youth and remaining completely appropriate for its intended age group. We’ve seen Kevin’s first date and moment in the spotlight as an Olympic torchbearer. We’ve also seen “Future Kevin” (the one who was married in the pages of Life With Archie) announce a run for Senate with a platform centered on gun laws in LWA #24.

Bunker, (Miguel Jose Barragan) the flamboyantly out-n-proud new member of the Teen Titans is discovering new aspects of his powers (levitation) but his personal story hasn’t really unfolded yet. Interviews with creators mentioned a past love that has yet to surface on panel.

Rictor and Shatterstar by DAlexisStPierre
Rictor and Shatterstar are still together as a romantic couple (despite Rob Liefeld’s objections) and both are active members of X-Factor – but with the current arc who knows… relationships are evolving and unraveling at the speed of light as the team gets closer to their milestone 250th issue.

Apollo and Midnighter‘s rebooted relationship continues to grow in the pages of Stormwatch. We’ve seen a number of empowering small moments (connecting with Jenny Quantum), but not that much time spotlighting the personal side of their romance. I ALREADY know they can decimate anything when working in concert… I’d like to see a “date night.”

Kate Kane and Maggie Sawyer
Gotham socialite Kate Kane, A.K.A. Batwoman stalks the city’s dark streets (to critical acclaim) when she’s not busy canoodling with Detective Maggie Sawyer of the GCPD (not to mention winning her SECOND GLAAD award for “Outstanding Comic” – the first was in 2010).

X-Men Legacy #274 X-Men Legacy #274 X-Men Legacy #274 X-Men Legacy #274

X-Men Legacy #274 told a touching tale in which Rogue was unable to save a mortally injured closeted gay man and used her ability to “reap” him and deliver a message of love and regret to the man’s former lover. Oh yeah, she also rejected Magneto’s marriage proposal.

Avengers Academy #39

In the final issue of Avengers Academy, Julie Power and Karolina Dean are making rainbows in the sky as fame-hungry Striker (Brandon Sharpe) makes his first post scars public appearance at the Prom of a gay teen inspired by Brandon’s “It Gets Better” video – making it a recond-breaking TWO LGBT kisses in one issue! Including Marvels SECOND on-panel gay male kiss, and not that long after the first (Wiccan and Hulkling in the last issue of Avengers: The Children’s Crusade). Someone else will have to write up a scorecard on girl on girl snogging in the Marvel U. Anyone up to it?

Demon Knights #14 Demon Knights #14 Demon Knights #14 Demon Knights #14

DC Comics New 52 has become even more inclusive with an intersex re-invention of “The Shining Knight” who appears in their medieval title, Demon Knights.

In a recent issue (#14), Shining Knight a.k.a. Ystin informs a female comrade who’s seemingly taken a “shine” to the mystical hero. “I think you like one… aspect of who I am,” the Knight explains. “But I’m the other too. I was born this way. I’ve kept saying, whenever anyone asks. I’m not just a man or a woman. I’m both.”

Alan Scott in temptation by The Grey (pretending to be Sam)

We met Earth-2‘s Alan Scott and his loving boyfriend Sam who was unfortunately doomed to be the emotional loss that drives Green Lantern as a hero and Avatar of “The Green.” During his first heroic battle (vs a reimagined Grundy as an avatar of “The Grey”) he is given a chance to be with an illusion of Sam, but overcomes temptation. After the fight he blows off Flash and Hawkgirl, saying he doesn’t need them. Bullshit. Without them Grundy would have smashed him into paste while his psyche was busy mentally snuggling with a mushroom shaped like Sam.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 9 introduces a multitude of BtVS fans th "Billy the Vampire Slayer" who is not only the first male character to take on the name of "Slayer," but also the first GAY male "Slayer." Not before you tell me a "Slayer" has to be female – according to the Legend – you are right. Billy has NO "Slayer" powers. He is a bullied teen who started training to defend himself but stepped up to defend his home town from a scourge of "Zompires" – I’ve not been following Season 8 before Billy – but they seem like slow stupid Vampires? More details soon.

Marvel NOW! Young Avengers #1 Marvel NOW! Young Avengers #1 Marvel NOW! Young Avengers #1

Wiccan and Hulkling will appear in the Marvel NOW! January 2013 title Young Avengers alongside original teammate Kate Bishop. Rounding out the roster are teen Loki, Marvel Boy (Noh-Varr A.K.A. “Protector”), and Miss America Chavez. I’m really glad to see Noh-Varr taking off his Protector cowl and joining YA. but I still miss Stature and young Vision and also wish Wiccan’s twin “Speed” was going to be along for the ride.

DCnU & Marvel are committed to LGBT Super-Heroes

Both Marvel comics and DC’s “New 52″ show a commitment to inclusion of LGBT characters in some of their best titles. I’ll likely expand and update this post to include more titles, so leave a comment to point out any I left out. If it’s a DC title, sightings should be post relaunch.

DC’s New 52 line up of titles contains a number that prominently feature LGBT characters. Stormwatch chronicles the future relationship between gay Superman and Batman analogues Apollo and The Midnighter. Their story has been told, but never in the DCU proper. Teen Titans will introduce Bunker, a flamboyant gay teen hero. Batwoman follows the costumed adventures of lesbian socialite Kate Kane. The Shade is a new maxi-series set in Opal City and the cast includes bisexual blue alien Mikasl Tomas a.k.a. Starman. No sign of recently resurrected Aussi gay were-hero Tasmanian Devil.

Stormwatch features Apollo and The Midnighter Teen Titans features new flamboyant gay mexican teen Bunker Batwoman features prominant Gotham lesbian socialite Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman The SHade maxiseries features bisexual blue alien Mikaal Tomas a.k.a. Starman

Marvel may not have rebooted their entire universe recently, but nonetheless also have a number of high profile titles showcasing LGBT characters. The most popular LGBT characters of the Marvel U would be gay teen Young Avengers… Wiccan and Hulkling. A close second would be gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar from Peter David’s brilliant X-Factor. Daken Akihiro, the tattooed, bisexual bad boy son of Wolverine is fast becoming a fan favorite. Speaking of Wolverine, when he scooped up the X-kids and brought them back-to-school, he included Anole, Graymalkin and Bling. Karma has also stated Weschester is her destination.

Wolverine and the X-Men features a number of LGBT mutants: Anole, Graymalkin, Bling and Karma

If you think I forgot about Alpha Flight… not so fast. You may not have heard that news of it’s status as an ongoing title was premature. Alpha Flight is cancelled as of issue #8.

DCnU Gay Teen Titan “Bunker” has penchant for purple

Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth Gay Teen Titans Bunker is Miguel Jose Barragan. Raised in the very small Mexican village of El Chilar, he was very loved by his family and the village as well — and they were as accepting of his homosexuality as they were to his super powers when they first manifested. To that end he grew up in an angst-free environment. He was born out of the closet and so he has a very refreshing outlook on life. the presumed cover to Teen Titans #3 shows Bunker seemingly in fear of Tim Drake’s bat-crotch

A twitter exchange between fan fave writer Gail Simone and DCnU Teen Titan artist Brett Booth preceded the September 18th article on Bleeding Cool officially announcing that the roster of relaunched series includes a new gay teen hero. “Bunker” manifests small force fields with a brick like texture (seen in the artwork as projected fists). According to Booth, despite being included on the cover art, Bunker doesn’t become part of the story until issue #3. He also mentioned on-the-nose purple wasn’t his first choice, but of all the color schemes, it just worked best, and what can you do?

Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth Teen Titans #1 by Scot Lobdell and Brett Booth

His real name is Miguel (Miggs) Jose Barragan. Raised in the very small Mexican village of El Chilar. he was very loved by his family and the village as well — and they were as accepting of his homosexuality as they were to his super powers when they first manifested. To that end he grew up in an angst-free environment. He was born out of the closet and so he has a very refreshing outlook on life.

Bunker will differ from some of the more recent new gay characters (or recently outed) to show up in comics (Rictor, Shatterstar, Wiccan, Hulkling, Greymalkin, Anole) in that he grew up comfortable and accepted for being both gay and meta. In the recent article, Bret explained their reasoning and approach to the first officially fabulous Teen Titan…

Sure they are gay people who you wouldn’t know are gay right off the bat, but there are others who are a more flamboyant, and we thought it would be nice to actually see them portrayed in comics. Will he be more effeminate than what we’ve seen before, the ‘typical’ gay male comic character, yes. Does it scare the shit out of me that I might inadvertently piss off the group I want to reflect in a positive way, you’re damn straight (pun intended!)

I won’t know how I REALLY feel about this until I read it, but as a prime example of the demographic he’s afraid of “pissing off,” I’ll say I have no problem with the concept as long as he doesn’t become a painful stereotype. Basically, I’m interested and far more excited about the release of Teen Titans #1 because of this, but since he won’t show for a few issues, it is a wait and see situation for a true opinion.

A number of people have already made the inevitable GLEE reference – calling him a Mexican Chris Colfer with super powers. That PARTICULAR combination is sure to draw the interest of many, the admiration of some and the ire of a few sides. I’ve noticed (both in GLEE comments here and elsewhere) the general dislike that the “nelly queen” type in general (or Colfer specifically – personally I enjoy him despite a tendency to find most over the top types a bit tedious) generate – even within an exclusively gay community. So at this point in the evolution of the “Gay Superhero” is this a step forward or 2 steps back?

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/is-the-dcnus-out-n-proud-flamboyant-homosexual-teen-titan-bunker-one-step-forward-or-two-back/question-2167777/" title="Is the DCnU's "Out n Proud" flamboyant homosexual Teen Titan "Bunker" one step forward or two back?">Is the DCnU&#8217;s &#8220;Out n Proud&#8221; flamboyant homosexual Teen Titan &#8220;Bunker&#8221; one step forward or two back?</a>

Interestingly this is NOT the first time Teen Titans scribe Scott Lobdell has been part of a story that includes a gay character. He was also the writer of the historic (if often maligned) 1992 Alpha Flight #106 in which Northstar (Jean-Paul Baubier) officially publicly announced his homosexuality by screaming I’m Gay! while fighting an enraged Canadian Super Mountie named Major Mapleleaf (who was out to kill an AIDS baby for surviving and getting media attention while his gay son died). Hopefully Bunker will be getting a subtler, more three-dimensional, less over the top and generally better written treatment.

I’ll be including Bunker in the LGBT Superlist as soon as I can get a good shot of the character – I’m going to ask Brett Booth for one. Lets hope he can help.

So what do YOU think of Bunker’s character description?

DCnU reveals 5 more of the remaining 52 #1 Issues

SOLICIT INFO ADDED: This crop of the 52 new #1 issues revealed by DC Comics is chock full of Young Justice. I’m a bit concerned about the degree of revamping Teen Titans is getting. Wonder Girl a “mysterious and belligerent powerhouse thief”? A tattooed Conner in a wifebeater? I could get used to the look of Red Robin and Kid Flash, but who are the other 2 girls? Neither a flying tar/oil girl with flaming hair nor a crawling, multiple-limbed spider girl are ringing any bells. Any Guesses? Rumors? Insults? Kind of surprised these announcements aren’t sparking more comments.

As always click on each image to read the solicit and enlarge the image.

Tim Drake, Batman’s former sidekick, is forced to step out from behind his keyboard when an international organization seeks to capture, kill or co-opt super-powered teenagers. As Red Robin, he must team up with the mysterious and belligerent powerhouse thief known as Wonder Girl and a hyperactive speedster calling himself Kid Flash in TEEN TITANS #1, by Scott Lobdell and artists Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund. The Legion of Super-Heroes has been decimated by the worst disaster in its history. In the 31st century, the LoSH is reeling from the loss of seven of their finest — and trying desperately to keep their youngest recruits alive against a series of terrible new threats. Now, the students of the Legion Academy must rise to the challenge of helping the team rebuild – but a threat of almost unstoppable power is rising at the edge of Dominator space, and if the new recruits fail, the Legion Espionage Squad may be the first casualties in a war that could split worlds in half! Seven heroes from the 31st century have traveled back to the present day. Their mission: Save their future from total annihilation. When the future tech they brought with them fails, they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish world and an ultimate struggle to survive. LEGION LOST #1 will be written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Pete Woods, fresh off an acclaimed run of Action Comics. Hank Hall is not happy. He’s not happy to have Dawn Granger as a new partner in his war on crime. He’s not happy that she’s dating the ghostly Super Hero, Deadman. He’s not happy to learn that someone is trying to plunge the United States into a new civil war! Now it’s up to Hawk and Dove to root out the forces behind this conflict and stop them before they turn the U.S. into a wasteland! The exciting new series will be written by Sterling Gates and illustrated by Rob Liefeld. The brilliant, slightly awkward high school student Virgil Hawkins transforms into the cocky electromagnetic hero Static! He faces super-powered street gangs, raging hormones, homework, and girls in STATIC SHOCK #1, co-written by John Rozum and Scott McDaniel, with McDaniel also illustrating along with Jonathan Glapion. A mysterious tragedy forces the Hawkins family to relocate from Dakota to New York City! Virgil embarks upon new adventures in a new high school and a new internship at S.T.A.R. Labs!

Teen Titans was previously announced but the other 4 increase the number of the 52 #1 issues announced to 41 leaving 11 more still to come.

CAUTION WILD SPECULATION: There was one unnamed Supertitle announced thus far (Superman #1?) which leave Action Comics, Superboy and Supergirl. Action and Conner seem sure bets – which would lower the number of the unannounced 52 first issues to 9. OK. lets think. From what I hear DC is trying to elevate Cyborg so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cyborg #1.

That would make 8 left. Hoping to see Secret Six #1 and Booster Gold #1 (but his presence in the JLI may mean no?), but apart from that I’m stumped. Will Power Girl and Zatanna continue monthly? Will Wally and Barry each get their own title? Will Deathstroke have a book? Since I’m NOT following Flashpoint, I’m relying on you guys to speculate with me. Are there any characters being spotlighted heavily that have NOT shown up in any of the new titles? Talk to me!

Wonder Girl #1 introduces new Titan… Solstice

UPDATE: Kind of a throwaway tale. Nothing important… Cassie and Solstice team up against some villainess called Zand and learn each others identities. Cassie gets a hug from her disapproving mom. There – You’re all filled in.

Wonder Girl has come a long way since her board shorts and black wig days. I’m still not loving this Conneresque non-costume on her, but it IS growing on me a bit. I should actually start to like it by the time they change it again. Who is Solstice and what will she mean for the Teen Titans? It all begins here.

Spinning out of the pages of TEEN TITANS comes this spotlight on Cassie Sandsmark, the wonderful Wonder Girl! Even though not every moment of Wonder Girl’s life is spent being a Titan, strange adventures still follow her everywhere. In this issue, she’ll cross paths with the odd new hero known as Solstice!

Wonder Girl #1 Wonder Girl #1 Wonder Girl #1
Wonder Girl #1 Wonder Girl #1 Wonder Girl #1

I think as a demi-goddess daughter of Zeus, Cassie Sandsmark has amazing potential in the future DCU. I’m hoping now that the Teen Titans title is no longer floundering we’ll see some more character development. I’d even love to see Cassie grow into the role of the new Fury (with her lasso of anger) since Uncle Ares seems so taken with her and Lyta Trevor appears to be wiped from the current timeline anyway.

Young Justice – full Cartoon Network premiere!

Young Justice is a new ongoing Cartoon Network animated series starring the teen sidekicks of the DCU. Thankfully this lacks the ultra adorable (ick) manga quality of the Teen Titans cartoon that I hated so. I know some liked it – sorry if you did, but I found the overly cute aspect of it to be an abomination when applied to beloved characters and favorite stories that deserved a serious treatment but ended up bastardized (The Judas Contract). Young Justice on the other hand shows some promise. The character designs are great and the animation style is more like my beloved Justice League Unlimited than the annoying TT cartoon. Only one major complaint – WHERE IS WONDER GIRL???????

Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video Young Justice video
I knew the clips would not last – so I hope you saw them while they were up because they are gone now. The Cartoon Network website DOES have full episodes of some shows – lets hope they’ll be putting these up too. If so I’ll mention it

SPOILERIFIC LIVEBLOGGED COMMENTS BELOW!!!

Hmmm – Speedy is a bit of a pill. I think Artemis will be a better archer for the team (but is she Arrowette renamed? or a version of the Bana Mighdall amazon Artemis? I think the latter makes more sense with Wonder Girl missing). A distress call from Zatara? That’s odd, he should be long dead by the present – what other differences does the animated DCU of Earth-16 hold in store? Why not Zatanna? “We didn’t come for a play date!” LOVE IT! They are doing a good job of capturing the essence of the youthful hero-in-training who wants off the sidelines.

AMAZING action sequences! The look and style of this is PERFECT! I may have a new favorite cartoon. Cadmus is our big bad for this episode, makes sense… Enter Conner Kent, in white? It works I guess – reminds me of Galatea from JLU. And Young Justice falls… for the moment. Can they free themselves and Superboy? Of course…

Remind me not to get a creepy shoulder pet – my cat is smart and manipulative enough. Shouldn’t take Robin too long to figure out they need to disable the wee telepathic critters in order to free Superboy. Nope – looks like Conner must have figured it out himself. Superboy can’t fly? Really? Have they been watching Smallville instead of reading Teen Titans? When Conner 1st appeared after Supes croaked, could he fly? I thought he could.

OK This completely rocks! It’s really everything I wanted that Teen Titans cartoon to be (alas without the “New” Teen Titans I grew up with, but the line-up shows promise). Now I never read the “Young Justice” comic regularly. I only read a few specials here and there, so I don’t know if the team had a rogues gallery of its own that hasn’t been used in the current Teen Titans title… Who is The Light? From Superboy’s telepathically taught description of himself as a replacement for a fallen Superman or an opponent for a Superman turned against the light they seem like a shadow cabinet of individuals working for what they consider to be the “greater good” at any cost?

I’m surprised they spilled the beans on the new Aqualad’s powers this way. Although they established his mother is Aquaman’s retconned sister in law Siren and poppa is Black Manta, I don’t think we’d seen all his powers in action in Brightest Day yet – or if we have, I hadn’t caught the lightning part of it as something he was doing too. He has powers from BOTH parents? I thought Black Manta wore a powersuit until Nekron amped him up?

Not that i mind a super sausage-fest, but where are the girls? At the last moment, we meet Miss Martian who is Martian Manhunter’s NIECE?, um no she’s not… unless one of his long dead siblings was a white martian lover. I doubt it. I think Mars was pretty racist. I wonder if this will be addressed in a future episode? We noticeably did NOT meet Artemis. Thoughts? is she Arrowette renamed or Artemis of Bana Mighdall?

FYI – I tried a free program called YouTube Downloader to grab em for myself. Came in quite handy tonight! The program seems like dream come true – please let me know if you know otherwise.

Will Damian Wayne lead the Teen Titans as Robin?

Not if they have anything to say about it! Ravager would probably kill him first. OK, Its about damn time!!! I’ve been wanting Damian Wayne in the Teen Titans since they reintroduced Talia’s love child as the little sociopath he’d become way back in Batman #665 (2006). If ever there was a budding hero who needed friends… Damian is the one. Only question is… CAN he make friends? Well he is NOT off to a great start.

Heads up, Teen Titans! There’s a new hero in town, and while Damian might not want to join you, he’s more than happy to lead you! There should always be a Robin on the team, but if Damian is their only available option, maybe they’ll pass on having a Boy Wonder. Hopefully he’ll be able to help against the terrible menace of the rising villain, Headcase!

Teen Titans #88: New variation on a classic Titans line-up

It is no secret that the Teen Titans book had been floundering of late, so it is also no surprise that DC has taken the writer from one of the hottest books out of Blackest Night and teamed him with a superstar artist to relight the spark of this once great team. I’m (of course) a big time fan of the New Teen Titans from the 80′s but I also really enjoyed Geoff John’s reboot of the book until about the time Superboy and Impulse were killed off in other titles. But they’ve both been back for awhile – so why did this book still suck? No Robin. As much as I’d like to see Tim Drake back with the team, Damien is even better.

It’s here! A new day dawns for the Teen Titans, brought to you by the dynamic duo of J.T. Krul (GREEN ARROW, BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS) and Nicola Scott (WONDER WOMAN, SECRET SIX)! Packed with action, steeped in emotion and featuring your favorite heroes, TEEN TITANS is ready to explode off the racks!

Teen Titans #88 Teen Titans #88 Teen Titans #88
Teen Titans #88 Teen Titans #88 Teen Titans #89 Teen Titans #90

Starting right here, the team finds itself pushed in new directions and brought to new heights while also rediscovering its roots. With the rise of a mysterious new threat called the Feral Boys, Superboy, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Raven, Beast Boy and the newly returned Ravager will have the chance to rebuild their camaraderie in the face of all that might endanger it. But if they discover the truth behind the Feral Boys, will they be able to stand together to face it? Find out here as the new era of the Teen Titans begins in this perfect jumping-on-point issue!

Besides the amazing artistic team, there are two details about this new line-up that really pique my interest… #1 The return of Ravager to the fold ! YAY! and #2 something I’ve been anticipating since the characters as first introduced – the always irascible and occasionally homicidal Damien Wayne as Robin of the Teen Titans. Add to that the impending arrival and inevitable acceptance of the new Aqualad and we really have a truly modern interpretation of the classic Teen Titans roster. I like it. This REALLY is the first promise this title has shown in AGES. Hmmm So who’s the glowing girl we see in the teaser image? Thoughts?

Young Justice: The ANIMATED Series

Now I wish THIS had been the Teen Titans cartoon series. I hated that anime travesty. This looks a lot more like what I wanted for DC’s legacy teens… something that has more in common with Justice League Unlimited than Pokemon. YOUNG JUSTICE is an all-new series from DC Entertainment and produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

In YOUNG JUSTICE, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over – to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets?

Young Justice: The Animates Series

Are you ready to come of age in such a world? Are you ready for life or death rites of passage? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League?

They list Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis (a reimagined Arrowette? or is it Wonder Girl Cassie Sandsmark? I think the former) as the members of Young Justice. So who’s the guy in the lower right corner? Is that Soul Man Aqualad? Why is he the most prominently featured? He looks like the affirmative action character Spyke that Marvel added to that X-Men series a few years back. If they want to be more multicultural why not include Cyborg? or Thunder? or Lightning? (from Outsiders and JSA) OR Static? Will we see other Young Justice allies like Secret, Empress or L’il Lobo?

Not really loving the cargo pants on Conner, but I generally like the look of the rest.

George Pérez’ self-homage Blackest Night #3 cover

Those of you who have been following the events of Blackest Night know that former Titan betrayer Tara Markov pays a pivotal role in Blackest Night Titans. In a move sure to incite a fanboy frenzy, DC asked the artist who created Terra to whip up this wicked homage to his legendary original cover to Teen Titans #30 (the issue Terra joined) as an alternate cover to Blackest Night Titans #3 (of 3) – due 10/28.

Who better to homage the cover to NEW TEEN TITANS (vol. 1) #30 than its original artist George Pérez? He even did a baby Black Lantern Wildebeest on the logo! And Hi-Fi Design knocked the coloring out of the park. You might see Pérez and Hi-Fi team up again on another Titans project in 2010. Stay tuned!

As usual the details are flawless. We have BL Hawk instead of Robin, BL Phantasm in Cyborg’s place, BL Pantha and BL Baby Wildebeest in the place of Starfire and Changeling, BL Tula and BL Lilith stand in for Donna and Raven, and Tempest in Kid Flash’s position. A terrifyingly beautiful cover.

Blackest Night Titans #3 of 3 (George Perez alternate cover) New Teen Titans #30

Unlike some who just don’t seem to get that the fun of Blackest Night is that it is terrifying, I am TRULY enjoying this cosmic crossover event. I cannot tell you the last time I audibly exclaimed OH SHIT! while reading a comic. The horrifying aspect of what the Black Lanterns are up to isn’t just inciting emotional responses in the heroes, it has my heart pounding as I turn the page. I cannot remember when a comic EVER had this kind of effect. If you aren’t reading it, START! All the Blackest Night minis have been excellent thus far, but Blackest Night : Titans is the best (not to mention the best Titans-related book to hit stands in a number of years).
