I noticed the gay love scene from the fan-produced episode – Star Trek: Blood and Fire making the rounds on some blogs and made a mental note to track down as much of the episode as possible. And one of my New Year’s resolutions is to try to make sure that all the cool stuff I bookmark for later posting ACTUALLY gets online, so here you go – a trailer and the first 5 parts – I’m unsure if more will follow.
“Blood and Fire: is the fourth episode completed by Star Trek: New Voyages, and the first produced under the name Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II. “Blood and Fire” was written by Carlos Pedraza and David Gerrold. It is based on a script originally written by David Gerrold for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episode was never actually filmed because certain studio executives had a negative reaction to its positive depiction of an openly gay couple, which would have been a first in Star Trek history.
In the original script, the crew of the Enterprise-D came upon a derelict spaceship whose crew had all been killed off by Regulan bloodworms. Since these creatures are highly dangerous and can kill within hours, any ship or space station found to be infested with bloodworms must be sterilized and/or destroyed, as per Starfleet orders. The concept of Regulan bloodworms, mentioned in dialogue in the original Star Trek series (but never actually explained until this episode), was intended to be a metaphor for the AIDS crisis, as AIDS was a similarly lethal disease.
Years later, an AIDS allegory would finally be included in a Trek episode, namely the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Stigma“.
I grew up loving Star Trek reruns and later on was a big fan of the Next Generation (of all the series that is the only one that I’ve likely seen as a complete run). So I was saddened to hear of that Majel Barrett Roddenberry (widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) passed away on December 18th 2008 at the age of 76 as a result of complications from leukemia. She was surrounded by family and friends at her home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California.

In 1964, Roddenberry cast M. Leigh Hudec in a co-starring role in “The Cage,” the pilot for his science fiction series, Star Trek. She played ‘Number One,’ second in command on a fictitious starship. However, the character’s strength and authority in the Star Trek universe was unsettling to NBC and they ordered a second pilot made, without the woman, Number One.
When Roddenberry sold his second Star Trek pilot to the network, he remembered Majel’s work in “The Cage” and hired her as Nurse Christine Chapel. Instead of the dark-haired M. Leigh Hudec that they had disliked in the other pilot, she now used the name Majel Barrett and wore a blond wig as Chapel. Majel remains the only actor to have contributed to every facet of the Star Trek phenomenon.
It was announced on December 9th that Majel was to voice the computer of the starship Enterprise for the upcoming J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie as she had previously in four Star Trek television series and three films.

I’m really psyched for some of the great movies lined up for spring and summer 2009. The new (and the eleventh in the fan-fave franchise) Star Trek is pretty high up on my list (along with Watchmen and Wolverine: Origins). Sexy Sylar as Spock if perfect casting and Chris Pine is a complete hottie. I can imaging him screwing his way across the cosmos Kirk-style. And English funnyman Simon Pegg should provide some memorable moments as Scotty.
I was first smitten with Zachary Quinto as Sasan, Tori Spelling’s gay best friend in So NoTORious, long before he became Heroes season 1 big bad. His tenure as the sinister yet sexy Sylar cemented my interest and to have him as the Star Trek’s new Spock is really the last straw. If he gets one more geek role, I’ll be honor bound to stalk him.
