Who will rule the Marvel Universe?

The upcoming one-shot War of Kings: Who Will Rule? should answer some questions raised by the aftermath of the cosmic miniseries. With the both Vulcan and Black Bolt seemingly annihilated, the Shi’ar Imperium in chaos and the Inhuman-ruled Kree responsible for a seven parsec wide hole in the space-time-continuum that has been dubbed “the Fault,” two cosmos-spanning empires are left up the proverbial intergalactic creek without leaders to paddle them through it. This leaves the very literal question… Who will rule the Marvel U?

Can Medusa pick up her husband’s scepter and continue to rule the Kree? Will the Kree let her and the Inhuman Royal Family carry on? Crystal was fast becoming the People’s Princess… with Ronan the Accuser at her side could she surpass the sister who has always underestimated her? What about the Shi’ar? Does the eternally loyal servant to the Shi’ar empire – Gladiator, have what it takes to rule it? He doesn’t want the position and just hopes to help find the right person to lead, but then those who seek power aren’t always the best choices either. Perhaps he is a better candidate than he thinks? If not him, who else? Lilandra is dead, D’Ken is dead (again) that leaves… Deathbird? Oh oh.

While I’m sure we’ll have to wait awhile for any gratifying final answers to these questions, this next chapter should start to set the stage for Act III (Act I = Inhuman side of Secret Invasion, Act II = War of Kings) in this cosmic drama.

War of Kings #5 of 6: In Rage and Blood and Fire

Looking forward to picking this up today… (among other things).

The high impact, critically acclaimed sci-fi epic rages towards its explosive climax! Last issue’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger has everyone scrambling! Vulcan’s once unbeatable and vast war machine is grinding to a halt! Black Bolt’s forces are struggling to survive! It’s all coming down to the final clash, king vs. king! But where will the other power players place their loyalty, and can anyone imagine a solution as extreme as the one Medusa is proposing? The Universe is about to change forever in what IGN.com calls “a veritable dream for science fiction/fantasy fans…War of Kings is event comics done right.”

War of Kings # 4 of 6 – Silent Sneak Peek!

I’ve been following and enjoying the War of Kings – BUT skipping the Darkhawk tie-ins – I just can’t take that character seriously on a cosmic level after Loners. Can anyone fill me in on exactly WHY Christopher Powell is relevant on a cosmic scale? And yes I read the wiki – still don’t see the point (other than selling me another book I don’t want to read).

The Shi’Ar/Inhuman war reaches its most savage level yet! Emperor Vulcan goes for the kill strike, but does he have more enemies on the field of battle…or at home? Meanwhile, Black Bolt discovers that the Inhumans are not quite the happy family he thought they were!

It’s explosive action and universe-changing twists from the DnA/Pelletier War Of Kings team that IGN.com calls “a versatile dream for science fiction and fantasy fans…event comics done right!”

OK that may be a bit overly hyped, but what’s not to like? This is a cool action packed cosmic battle with beloved characters on both sides (I always like the Imperial Guard) and beautifully illustrated by one of the best artists in the biz (and Paul Pelletier has been a favorite since Superboy and the Ravers) as well.

They could not really sell me on the Darkhawk tie-in, (I mean Darkhawk? really? I was unimpressed with him in Loners. Did any of you read it? Thoughts?) but I am interested in what is going on in the main War of Kings storyline.

War of Kings #1

In the aftermath of the Secret Invasion, Black Bolt has led the Inhumans on a shockingly savage path to restore their strength and security. But that path has brought them into direct confrontation with the Shi’Ar Empire – and their mad ruler Vulcan! Who will get in the first strike? Who will fall on the bloody battlefield? Who will rule? The Imperial Guard, the Starjammers, the Inhuman Royal Family and more of your favorite sci-fi characters are locked on a collision course…and it all starts here! War of Kings – the Key Pieces on the Chessboard (pt 1)

CBR recently posted a set of posts detailing basic background histories for some of the key players in Marvel Comics upcoming War of Kings. Setting up the battlefield like a chessboard they revealed the Kings, Queens and Bishops of the game…

Known as the “King’s Game,” chess is a centuries old game that’s been used to teach military strategy. This March, two of the most powerful rulers in the Marvel Universe, will turn the cosmos into their own personal chessboard in “War of Kings,” a six-issue miniseries by writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning and artist Paul Pelletier.

The Kings and Queens are Inhuman rulers Black Bolt and Medusa and the new Emperor of the Shi’ar, Vulcan and his Royal Consort Deathbird (though Vulcan is actually the long lost 3rd Summers brother from earth, he currently IS the will of the Shi’ar empire).

Black Bolt - King of the Inhumans Medusa - Queen of the Inhumans Deathbird - Royal consort to the SHi’ar emperor Vulcan Vulcan - Emperor of the Shi’ar empire
War of Kings #1 War of Kings #1 - 50/50 variant
Crystal - Inhuman elemental Ronan the Accuser - Kree warrior Lilandra Neramani - Former Shi’ar Majestrix Gladiator - leader of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard

The Bishops are Crystal (Medusa’s sister the Inhuman elemental), Ronan the Accuser – (her Kree warrior fiancee?), Lilandra Neramani (Former Shi’ar Majestrix) and Gladiator (leader of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard).

If you are wondering why Lilandra and Gladiator are both put on the side of the Shi’ar. Think about it. Common enemies and all that. Could the Inhumans be enough to cause Lil to mend fences with Vulcan and her sister or will she use the Inhumans to weaker the emperor and retake her throne? Cosmic intrigue – Marvel Style.
