Looks like the New Mutants will be getting involved with The Siege. We knew that Hela doesn’t give anything for free. Now Dani is beholden to her and there are plenty of Asgardian souls awaiting a Valkyrie to guide them into Hel and Moonstar is elected.
SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!! Back in DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN:UTOPIA, Dani Moonstar made a deal with Hela. Now, the mistress of Hel is calling in her marker. With all the Asgardians falling in the Siege of Asgard, someone needs to deal with the dead.
And who better to do so than a Valkyrie. But where is Dani supposed to be bringing these dead? Brought to you by a guest creative team of Kieron Gillen (THOR, S.W.O.R.D.) and Niko Henrichon (PRIDE OF BAGHDAD).
I hope Danielle Moonstar retains some of her recently regained Asgardian might once the dust settles. She’s a great character and while she has proved herself more than capable as a human, I like her better without such a big chip on her shoulder.

All the X-blogs are abuzz with talk of the the big X-Men Event to follow on the heels of Necrosha… Second Coming crosses over into X-Men (Uncanny & Legacy), X-Factor, X-Force and New Mutants. The X-Men have their hands full with the technarch-infected mutant-hating/hunting AI entity known as Bastion back yet again to bedevil them. PLUS it looks now that A Girl Named Hope is over and she and Cable are back from the future, the Phoenix is back too. but is Hope Summers really Jean? If so, what, reincarnated? Hope WAS born in Alaska… could she be Madelyne Pryor’s or some Summers/Grey genetic experiment of Mister Sinister’s – he DID come after her before Rogue killed him (and his seemingly short-lived return as Miss Sinister). And if the girl known as Hope Summers IS the Phoenix, does that mean Bishop was right to want her dead? Is she fated to save or damn mutankind? Only time and these stories will tell.
All will unite. One will rise. One will die. One will lead. One will sacrifice. Your thoughts? Mine after the Marvel teaser images…
All will unite – the disparate x-teams will come together. One will rise – will Hope be the return of Phoenix or Dark Phoenix (was Bishop right)? One will die – I’m guessing Cable. One will lead – not sure if it is Emma or Mags – I think Scott may be too broken by his son Nathan’s death (if I’m right) and need some time. One will sacrifice… hmmm Not sure what the sacrifice will be… Maybe Nathan gives his life to save Hope’s… any other theories?
With this crossover running through all the major X-Titles: Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy, New Mutants, X-Force and even the usually somewhat unplugged X-Factor, it is a MAJOR event. And with longtime x-foe Bastion as the big bad and specials showcasing the X-Men’s resident supergeniuses (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1) and a 3-issue miniseries chronicling an ill-timed side-battle in Limbo (X-MEN: SECOND COMING – REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE #1), we may just have to wait awhile to find out if Hope Summer will we absolutely corrupted by her newfound power or not. See Shades of X to Come – May 2010 for more on those specials!

Some fascinating hints of whats in store for the x-universe… BEWARE: Thar be spoilers below if you click the images and read the captions (including Pixie’s daddy – and he was one of my listed possible baby batter doners) Lots going on in the XU this spring. We have the return of mutant Hope in the X-Event known as Second Coming running through X-Men (Uncanny & Legacy), X-Factor, X-Force, and New Mutants (more on that in just a sec). Dazzler (new tale with half-sis Lois London as the big bad) and Emma Frost (another origin) specials, cryptic hints on an upcoming X-death, Daken vs Wolverine vs Romulus in Dark Wolverine! and Wolverine #900? wait a sec, I’ll need some help on that math cause that plain seems wrong. Maybe if you add up every issue of every comic that Logan EVER appeared in?
I have to admit that being a HUGE fan of DC’s recent zombies, I was unimpressed by Necrosha (still awaiting the final chapter but, meh) The BL characters in DC were by definition NOT really the characters but former Black Queen and wanna-be-goddess Selene’s unexplained magic/tech and the stories of the Necrosha arc just weren’t that scary or as horrific. Sure I’m happy to have Doug Ramsey back but with this new interpretation of Cypher’s abilities he’s not the same cannon-fodder mutant he once was.

I LOVED the original New Mutants and was really hoping to see some of Marvel’s best and brightest working on new stories with Sam Guthrie, Roberto Dacosta, Xi’an Coy Mahn, Dani Moonstar, Illyana Rasputin and Amara Aquilla. The Alex Ross cover for the first issue led me to believe we’d see their A-game… But Sauron? C’mon.
Sauron is one of those villains of yesterday that I have a hard time taking seriously (Like Despero, Killer Moth or Paste Pot Pete). So I’m not seeing his appearance in New Mutants #10 as something either necessary or as likely to generate much interest. And its really a shame.
Why do the New Mutants exist? Why are they a team? Cyclops runs the X-Men as one giant army, not separate squads. So, why do the New Mutants exist as a squad? The answer isn’t what you expect.
So Cyclops and Emma (the writers) have a plan for Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, Karma, Moonstar, Magma, Warlock and the newly resurrected Cypher. But with an army of X-Men at his back and call, WHY reform the New Mutants? I’ll find out if only because I am a bit intrigued by the subplot regarding Illyana’s knowledge from the future. I’d also like to see Rhane back with her old buddies as Wolfsbane. She’ll need her friends now and X-Force is no place for a pregnant lady.
Art is still just borderline adequate. It is a shame that Marvel isn’t trying their hardest to turn this into a top shelf title. The characters MORE than have the potential.

Took them long enough to pick up this dangling sub-plot… I think it would have made for a better opening arc than Legion’s return.
What is Illyana Rasputin up to? In NEW MUTANTS #1, she returned from who knows where with knowledge that she says is from the future. A future where things aren’t going well for the X-Men. Emma Frost is not going to settle for this question being unanswered.

I just don’t know about newly uber-ninja Doug Ramsey being able to read “body language.” It is an interesting way to make him far less ineffectual if they mean to rescue him from Selene’s clutches and make him part of the team again. I don’t fully understand these resurrected characters yet. They SEEM to have their own personalities but that could just be programming. I’m hoping Warlock will be able to purge the virus from Doug and return him to his old friends.
The massive event tying X-FORCE, X-MEN LEGACY and NEW MUTANTS together continues! Doug Ramsey isn’t the only one back from the grave as the New Mutants’ old enemies the Hellions come calling. Old grudges (and enemies, for that matter) don’t die easy.

Some fascinating hints of whats in store for the x-universe… The XU (X-Men Legacy, X-Force, New Mutants) is apoppin with zombies doing the bidding of wanna-be-goddess Selene in the first real X-Event of 2010… Necrosha. But its far from the last as Hope is still on her way back from the future and Nate Grey is back so there are all kinds of possibilities for mutants in 2010!
Stay tuned to the various X-Titles for further development…

I meant to post this last week… but was busy. If you’ve been reading New Mutants #1-4 you likely were at best disappointed and at worst livid at the average ordinary art and less than compelling inaugural adventure. Issue #5 which is really just a bridge between that arc and Necrosha which starts next issue. But It was more than that. I’ve heard a LOT of people who had dropped the book after issue 3 so I thought I’d give this some good press…
“The Calm” WARLOCK IS BACK! Everyone’s favorite alien is back on Earth, but why? Also, see the effects that UTOPIA had on Illyana and the rest of her crew and witness the most vicious fight ever to grace the pages of NEW MUTANTS. The combatants? Cannonball and Dani Moonstar.
My praise for the issue comes partially from characterization of Sam, Dani and Shan but even more so from the amazing imagery of artist Zachary Baldus whose painterly work looks like it was drawn and inked by by the love child of Bill Sienkiewicz and Paul Smith and the lovingly filled in with colored pencil by Jay Anacleto. Keep an eye out for Zachary Baldus he should be going places.
Cover art by Adam Kubert and Justin Ponsor.
Marvel should SERIOUSLY consider giving Baldus the book on a regular basis – his realistic yet abstract style is exactly what this title needs.
If the Necrosha issues are 1/2 as good as this they will be 5 times better than the first 4. If those first 4 stopped you from picking up #5 – then get over it and buy this issue. Zombie is the new black this fall as Doug Ramsey and the reanimated Hellions are showing up in issues 6 and 7.

It really seems to be a big year for the undead. We have zombies and vampires all over the summer blockbusters, cosmic zombies plaguing the DCU and now the X-Men, X-Force and the New Mutants have to watch out for Selene and her gang of techno organic mutant zombies in a terrifying crossover from x-writers Chris Yost, Craig Kyle, Mike Carey, and Zeb Wells.
YES. Selene is back (and this time I’m sure – I’m not confused by Monet in a slutty leather outfit)! We’ve known that she had Blink at her right hand (though not how she is alive or how she hooked up with Selene) since we saw Selene at the end of X-Force #11 with 3 shadowed figures standing alongside her throne. ).
Even in shadow, Clarice Ferguson is unmistakable with her light purple legs and signature chartreuse costume. To Blink’s right looks to be Wither, and on Selene’s left is Emplate (from the oversize hands). She’s now gathered a group of mutants with life-draining powers. From last week’s Exodus preview we’ve learned she also has Dazzler’s half-sister Lois London now know as Mortis and former Acolyte Senyaka with her as well as whatever dead mutants that poor undead enslaved Caliban led her and smitten vampric thrall Eli Bard too.
As to what she’s after… well Selene wants to be a Goddess. And she’s always been more than willing, eager in fact to sacrifice thousands of souls to do it.

I wasn’t as blown out of the water by issue #1 as I would have liked. It was OK. I think my expectations are a bit high as I was a HUGE fan of the original series – which started not that long after I started reading comics. Also they’ve shown us such amazingly beautiful covers that I found the interior art to be a merely adequate let-down.
“RETURN OF LEGION” One of the most dangerous X-Villains of all time is back and he’s targeted the New Mutants. Last time Legion reared his head, he created the Age of Apocalpyse. Do Cannonball, Karma, Magma, Moonstar and Magik have much hope of stopping him now?
I’m definitely going to give more than it a few more issues out of love for the characters – which I’m sure Marvel is counting on. I hope something truly great comes out of it. What did you guys think?

But what happens to the Young X-Men? Hopefully they’ll be folded into the crew along with the 1st next generation when YX ends with issue 12 and is followed by the May launch of a new series starring the original New Mutants.
Of course they canceled Young X-Men. Too many gay mutants running around. We just cannot catch a break. I hope it doesn’t squelch any plans for other new gay characters (hint hint STONEWALL). I would be nice if for a change we got a gay character in a title that didn’t get immediately cancelled – closest we’ve gotten is Karolina Dean. But you know how fanboys like lesbians and Runaways has stooped and started how many times now? I want to see a gay male character be an integral part of a long running team book. Is that too much to ask?
In an interview with Newsarama, writer Zeb Wells gave up a few tidbits, such as… Magik will be part of the team, Cannonball will be stepping up to the role of leader, the team will fight an old enemy in the first story and that as the series continues, other members of the New Mutants will be joining the fun and there is an adversary that wants the New Mutants together for a specific reason.
