Striker’s “coming out” offends Jerry Smith of Kentucky

Now that Striker is OUT and PROUD, we’re starting to hear the fallout from the religious right. I’m not surprised. With all the amazing leaps forward in the inclusion of LGBT characters in popular culture (comics especially of course), it’s inevitable that the usual suspects get their devoted Christian panties in a bunch about it. Issue #26 of Avengers Academy, Stryker’s sexuality is a 2 panel bit in an all-story no action character piece leading up to a crossroads moment. But the letters page is devoted to a well spoken, albeit ignorant ill-informed letter from a Mr. Jerry Smith of Erlanger Kentucky and a fantastic response from Writer Christos Gage.

Striker tells Veil he's gay

Among other things Mr. Smith suggests Mr. Gage’s compassion would be better served by volunteering for a hotline or donating to an organization that helps kids with coming out. Jerry just doesn’t get it. What Mr. Gage is doing will help prevent the need for the hotlines in the first place. LGBT youth don’t all call hotlines when they should. Some keep their pain and misery inside until it becomes too much to bear. Revealing Stryker’s “alternate sexual lifestyle” and complicated history doesn’t just add ANOTHER gay character to the Marvel U. It lets LGBT kids out there see themselves mirrored in the pages of their favorite book and exposes straight readers to “what that gay kid they keep teasing at school” might be going through. It may even make future generations more likely to stand up for that kid being picked on… or even empower bullied kids to stand up for themselves.

Mr. Smith’s arguments and analogies all fall a bit short of their mark and are easily swatted by Gage’s rebuttal. Smith compares having a gay character in a “TEEN” rated superhero book about minors to “giving Little Orphan Annie AIDS.” While I get his point I think its off base in that Avengers Academy is not intended for ALL AGES the same way Lil Orphan Annie is. Now if the writers of Tiny Titans introduce Lil gay Bunker he’ll have a point. Until then, I agree with Christos Gage in saying that I’d put money down that Mr. Jerry Smith of Erlanger Kentucky has a problem with Homosexuality itself and not just with it’s inclusion in Avengers Academy. Gage also points out a number of characters in the Marvel U with strong religious beliefs as well as disproves Smith’s uninformed allegation that hetero romance (kissing) is rare in comics.

Only those with a “faith-based” disdain for Homosexuality see this sort of progress as a Political agenda. WE thanks Cristos Gage for his work on Striker and his letters page comments about the issues raised by the story. Read a copy of the letters page and an article about it here.

DCnU & Marvel are committed to LGBT Super-Heroes

Both Marvel comics and DC’s “New 52″ show a commitment to inclusion of LGBT characters in some of their best titles. I’ll likely expand and update this post to include more titles, so leave a comment to point out any I left out. If it’s a DC title, sightings should be post relaunch.

DC’s New 52 line up of titles contains a number that prominently feature LGBT characters. Stormwatch chronicles the future relationship between gay Superman and Batman analogues Apollo and The Midnighter. Their story has been told, but never in the DCU proper. Teen Titans will introduce Bunker, a flamboyant gay teen hero. Batwoman follows the costumed adventures of lesbian socialite Kate Kane. The Shade is a new maxi-series set in Opal City and the cast includes bisexual blue alien Mikasl Tomas a.k.a. Starman. No sign of recently resurrected Aussi gay were-hero Tasmanian Devil.

Stormwatch features Apollo and The Midnighter Teen Titans features new flamboyant gay mexican teen Bunker Batwoman features prominant Gotham lesbian socialite Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman The SHade maxiseries features bisexual blue alien Mikaal Tomas a.k.a. Starman

Marvel may not have rebooted their entire universe recently, but nonetheless also have a number of high profile titles showcasing LGBT characters. The most popular LGBT characters of the Marvel U would be gay teen Young Avengers… Wiccan and Hulkling. A close second would be gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar from Peter David’s brilliant X-Factor. Daken Akihiro, the tattooed, bisexual bad boy son of Wolverine is fast becoming a fan favorite. Speaking of Wolverine, when he scooped up the X-kids and brought them back-to-school, he included Anole, Graymalkin and Bling. Karma has also stated Weschester is her destination.

Avengers: The Children's Crusade features gay Young Avengers Wiccan and Hulkling as well as X-Factor's gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar X-Factor features gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar Daken: Dark Wolverine features Daken Akahiro - Wolverine's bisexual bad boy son. Wolverine and the X-Men features a number of LGBT mutants: Anole, Graymalkin, Bling and Karma

If you think I forgot about Alpha Flight… not so fast. You may not have heard that news of it’s status as an ongoing title was premature. Alpha Flight is cancelled as of issue #8.

Shrinking Violet & Lightning Lass: lesbian lovers again?

In the recent Legion of Super-Heroes #6, Vi says she is taking Ayla home for the holidays with her hand draped casually around Ayla’s waist in an affectionate-perhaps-intimate manner. So it looks like DC is going to go there. I’m glad.

Of all the comic book titles out there, I think the bright future that the Legion represents should express hope for more than tolerance and inclusion. It should show us a future for which humanity can strive. One where sexual orientation is honestly not an issue for anyone. I would really like to see some LGBT relationships really explored in this title alongside the many hetero pairings witnessed by Legion fans.

Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass had a lesbian relationship in a previous Legion incarnation... is this a continuation of that romance?

I noticed them together on the cover of the upcoming annual (along with a monstrous Emerald Empress) and wondered if DC and writer Paul Levitz were going to bring the legendary Legion lesbians back into current continuity. If they do I hope we see Legion gays like Element Lad, Shvaughn (Sean) Erin, Invisible Kid and Chemical King soon too.

Here’s a few memorable shots of them from the Legion archives…

Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass had a lesbian relationship in a previous Legion incarnation... Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass had a lesbian relationship in a previous Legion incarnation... Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass had a lesbian relationship in a previous Legion incarnation... Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass had a lesbian relationship in a previous Legion incarnation...

Now though I’m really psyched to see DC heading in this direction… lesbians are never really all that controversial in comics. In many ways comics are still very much a genre aimed at adolescent str8 boys and the men they grow into – so the titillation of girl-on-girl action (even if it is off panel) appeals to the demographic. We’ll see how progressive DC can be when they have Element Lad marry Sean Erin.

for more on Vi and Ayla and their history visit GayLeague and Major Spoilers.

and THIS IS STILL NOT THE BIGGEST NEWS FROM THIS ISSUE… STAY TUNED!

If you or someone you know or love is depressed, upset or potentially suicidal due to teasing, harassing, ostracizing or bullying whether it is in real life or online, you are not alone. I’ve included a number of support links at the end of this article. Please reblog them or any of the videos below if you have your own platform.

If you know a queer or questioning young person who is dealing with depression, or seeks counseling, direct them (and donate!) to the great Trevor Project suicide prevention hotline: 1-866-488-7386.

It seems there has been an unsettling rash of tragic stories involving LGBT youth being tormented to the point of suicide. The latest such tragedy is that of Rutgers University scholarship student and skilled violinist, Tyler Clementi who lept off the George Washington Bridge to his death after his roommate broadcast video of a gay sexual encounter over the internet and tweeted about it in advance.

Even sadder is that it Clementi seemed to have been handling the situation as well as could be expected. CNN discovered an online thread at popular gay forum JustUsBoys.com that is believed to be posted by Clementi. Under the name cit2mo a college student asked for advice about how to handle his roommate broadcasting webcam footage of him kissing a guy. JUBers suggested he should report it and his posts as of September 21st said he did. But that night he roommate apparently broadcast more than just him kissing and the next day he left a final message on his Facebook page from his mobile phone stating “jumping off the gw bridge sorry.”

JUB has merged a number of threads on the topic and has moved his posts to the moderator section in case they are needed for the legal case against Rutgers Freshmen Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. The pair have been charged with invasion of privacy and face up to five years in prison. Prosecutors have yet to determine whether a New Jersey law that states “a person is guilty of bias intimidation if he or she commits a crime with the purpose of intimidating someone because of race, color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin or ethnicity” is applicable or not.

Although the details vary and aren’t usually quite this lurid, this story is becoming far too familiar. Especially this month which already saw the anti-gay bullying-related suicides of 15-year-old Billy Lucas of Greensburg IN and 13-year old Asher Brown of Houston TX and 13 year old Seth Walsh of Tehachapi CA.

The ItGetsBetterProject is a YouTube channel launched by Dan Savage meant to reach out to LGBT kids potentially at-risk of suicide – those who live in rural areas, exurbs, and suburban areas, places with no readily accessible gay organizations or services for queer kids. Savages has requested viewer submissions from other gay and lesbian adults—singles and couples, with kids or without, established in careers or just starting out, urban and rural, of all races and religious backgrounds.

It wouldn’t be a post from me if I didn’t include some admittedly semi-inappropriate (but I must lighten the mood – its a fun site) video tangents such as: Underwear model / fitness guru / Real World alum / CaptainAmericawannabe Scott Herman putting a pretty face (and muscled arms) on an ugly problem with a PSA for Trevor Project.

And a flash back to the 80s and the Heathers Soundtrack for a triptastic video… Teenage Suicide DON’T DO IT! by Big Fun. Sorry couldn’t resist. The research on these stories bummed me out so much I needed a laugh and I can’t help sharing.

LGBT Spotlight on… X-Factor’s Rictor & Shatterstar

I’m trying to be better about calling out references (both positive and negative) to LGBT characters and issues as I come across them in mainstream comics. There have been a number if significant sightings recently. Hot on the heels of Captain America’s thoughtful support of Wiccan and Hulkling’s relationship and The Rawhide Kid swishing and shooting his was across the old west we have a major development in the fan favorite romantic relationship between Rictor and Shatterstar…

from - X-Factor #207 from - X-Factor #207

Now I don’t want to give the end of the argument away because i LOVE Peter David’s work, so I’ve just included part of it, and will keep this focused on what happens in these 2 pages. This is the first time I’ve ever seen 2 men discuss their relationship on this level in a comic book. And I’d put money on it being the first time 2 men have talked about having an “open relationship” in a comic book that didn’t come from Class Comics. While on some level, I’d have preferred a traditional monogamous relationship for the pair (as an example to readers both gay and straight), I think Peter David’s choice here is the right one. It fits the character and history of Shatterstar perfectly.

Shatterstar is a very athletic fighter bred for a single purpose that didn’t include knowledge of or preparation for sex or emotional relationships. Once he became aware of the physical act, a warrior such as him might embrace it and excel at it but not understand the feelings that may come along with it. Peter David as always has done an excellent job of logically expanding upon what has gone before while still managing to break new ground and keep his audience surprised. I’ve said it before, Peter David Rocks!!!

UPDATE: This list has grown to OVER 300 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgendered Superheroes, Villains and Supporting Characters! (including images and descriptions)!!! See the FULL LIST of 300 HERE

Comments have been moved to that thread as well

PLEASE contact me if you know someone not included below or if you have a superior image of someone!

This gallery collection would not be possible without the hard work of sites dedicated to the subject of LGBT characters in comics like TheGayLeague, PinkKryptonite and PerryMoore’s LGBT list

I started gathering these images to update my original post about Gays in Comics, but it snowballed way beyond my ability to control. My original list of 20 has grown to 104 168 LGBT super heroes, villains and supporting characters. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more complete index. Click each image to see fullsize and read a brief summary.

PLEASE SHARE AND LINK TO THIS POST. I put a lot of work into tracking down these names, histories and images. They range from popular new gay characters, to old characters later outed, fallen gay characters, almost gay characters and of course the supporting gay characters. Northstar was NOT the first openly gay superhero at a major publisher. He was the first at Marvel and the first cool one, but he was preceded by the embarrassing el Extraño – a stereotypical flamboyant gay version of Dr Strange introduced and forgotten with DC’s 1988 series The New Guardians. Whoever came first, These pioneering characters really made it possible for new LGBT characters to be woven into the story as more than victim or villain.

The characters immediately following are creations conceived as LGBT by their originators or at least VERY SOON after creation. Some of these have become a popular part of continuity and others ended up exiled in limbo where they will remain until another writer decides to use them or kill them.

Other characters to come out of the 4-color closet were pre-existing characters who sometimes had heterosexual romantic histories. Generally, noone seems to get too upset (or even notice) if the character is minor enough, but as evidenced by the mini-uproar that followed the ricshatty kiss, some fans and creators get more upset than others when their favorite forgotten character from the 80s says "Yep I’m Gay."

Shatterstar - recently outed former member of X-Force - currently a member of X-Factor and in love with Rictor Rictor (Julio Estaban "Ric" Richter) - recently outed former member of X-Force - currently a member of X-Factor and in love with Shatterstar Electro - after embracing the love that dare not speak its name in prison, Max Dillon now pays shapeshifter whores to have sex with him as Spider-Man Lightspeed - Julie Power was revealed or at least strongly hinted to be a lesbian in the Loners mini series

Many of the Legion of Super Heroes have been hinted as gay only to have new creative staff change directions and kill planned storylines or completely reboot continuity. As of now, DC Comics has yet to officially "out" ANYONE in the 31st century. What? Are there no gays in the future? Is it like Iran? Hopefully that will be rectified in the new Legion tales in Adventure Comics.

Element Lad - Jan Arrah - Member of the Legion of Super Heroes - romantically involved with Shvaughn Erin, the Science Police's Legion liaison, who was later reveled to have been born male. But it started me thinking - her great love was Wildfire who has no body - when he got a body they tried to have a physical relationship - but it failed... hmmm

With the modern trend of killing characters wholesale, it’s no surprise that some LGBT heroes and villains can be counted among the casualties but we may be getting more than our 10%. Even though characters such as Northstar, Moondragon and Phyla-vell have died, I’ve listed them elsewhere due to recent resurrections, so this section is longer than it looks.

Tasmanian Devil: the most recent in a series of LGBT characacter to suffer a fate worse than death - he is now a trophy throw rug in front of Prometheus' fire star-crossed villainous gay lovers Monsieur Mallah and the Brain were both beaten to death at the hands of Gorilla Grodd Freedom Ring - gay teen hero Curtis Doyle was simultaneously impaled by dozens of spikes from the armor of the Iron Maniac after the ring bearing his reality-altering ring was sliced off Knockout - Scandal's lesbian lover and teammate, Kay died along with the rest of the New Gods

Myles Alfred were gay mutant lovers. Thought to have been murdered by the Comedian for interfering in the rape of Sally Jupiter Captain Metropolis - gay superhero from Watchmen's rich history. Supposedly involved with Hooded Justice. He was decapitated in a car accident in 1974. Silhouette - Ursula Zandt - resigned from the Minutemen after exposed as a lesbian - murdered with her lover in a hate crime months later. Destiny - Irene Adler died at the hands of David Haller in an era when heroes and villains didn't drop like flies

The characters on this list owe their very existence to those who blazed the trail…Madame Fatal was a retired actor turned cross-dressing hero and was first seen in Crack Comics #1 (May, 1940), a crime/detective anthology series published by Quality Comics. While Northstar WAS introduced in 1979, he didn’t ACTUALLY come out until a few years after DC introduced el Extraño in the New Guardians. Who ever was first, a few more have been added to history since then ( Union Jack II, The Mighty Destroyer) and the boys were soon joined by lesbians like Karma and Rainmaker.

Northstar - Jean Paul Beaubier was NOT the first openly gay superhero (but he WAS Marvel's first) Karma - was Marvel's first lesbian super-hero Rainmaker - Sarah Rainmaker is more of an example of a lesbian meant to titillate an adolescent audience - but she did help blaze the trail el Extraño - Gregorio De La Vega of DC Comics long forgotten New Guardians was an out gay superhero years before Northstar made his announcement. Northstar makes the better poster boy as Gregorio is a flamboyant stereotyped gay Dr. Strange
Starman III - bisexual Alien Mikaal Tomas from James Robinson's amazing Starman run Union Jack II - Brian Falsworth was the lover of The Destroyer The Destroyer - Roger Aubrey was the lover of Union Jack II Madame Fatal - in 1940's Crack Comics #1, Richard Stanton became the first cross-dressing hero. He donned a dress and wig and fought crime disguised as an old lady

And where would these super gays and gals be without their not so super friends and frenemies? We cannot forget the LGBT supporting castmembers like Terry Berg, Christian Frost, Maggie Sawyer Damon Matthews, Raymond Belmonde Frenchie DuChamp and even the SVU epidsde waiting to happen… Skip Westcott

Thomas Jagger - The gay son of the original judomaster (killed by Bane), Tommy Jagger is Knight of Checkmate's White King, Mr. Terrific.
Lesbian police captain Maggie Sawyer was introduced in April 1987, as Captain Sawyer of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit. Not a proud moment in LGBT comics characters... teen Skip Westcott puts the moves on a young pre-spidey Peter Parker Raymonde Belmonde - gay mentor to runaway urchin Northstar as a teen - introduced him to skiing and who knows what else Percy Pinkerton - membr of the Howling Comandos that Stan Lee has recently said was always supposed to be gay

Is Stonewall our big gay powerhouse?

From Jerry Sledge‘s introduction (he was in jail for some trouble that involved a date and a cop when Daisy found him), we know he has a story to tell. But we didn’t hear any of it in the 1st issue of Secret Warriors.

They took the “Strong Silent Type” thing a little TOO seriously. He didn’t utter a word in the issue – not even a battle quip. Everyone ELSE had a few lines, even Phobos who was off playing video games. But maybe that’s a good sign – most gay characters in comics tend to be a bit invisible anyway. Look at Obsidian if you can find him now that Manhunter is canceled.

I’d been anticipating the first issue of Secret Warriors since we were first introduced to Jerry Sledge as we were clued into Nick Fury‘s plan against the Secret Invasion. If the name Stonewall were not enough to make me suspect him as a “friend of Northstar“, advance shots of him in costume (shirtless muscle hunk tough guy with leather opera gloves) definitely had me thinking/hoping he’ll eventually be revealed as gay.

Why isn’t there ever a gay male powerhouse? Sure we’ve have some power kickass lesbians…(Knockout, Scandal, Question, Batwoman, Phyla, Moondragon). Wouldn’t it be nice if for a change the gay GUY isn’t someone who can fly away real fast (Northstar), someone who turns invisible (Anole) or someone who is completely powerless in direct sunlight (Graymalkin).

What if the gay character on the team was the big bad tough guy?!?!?! What if someone created such a character and stuck with him, making him a real part of the continuity of one of the big two and not just a token character tossed into group battles during crossovers? Might a new generation of straight comic readers see past stereotypes? Might a new generation of gay comic readers have a strong role model?

The closest we’ve seen to this type of character is Hulkling or Apollo and the Midnighter from The Authority. Thus far Hulkling’s portrayal has been good (and I love that we have portrayals of young gays coming out and falling in love, but would like to see some new gay characters outside the recently popular teen demographic. Even a gay character as powerful as Apollo still ends up beaten, raped and left a victim. Midnighter is really the closest we have to a true gay badass, but a rolemodel? I don’t think so.

Lets hope that the powers that be at Marvel know what they are doing. And that they remember Stonewall is more than a lame character from the Freedom Force.
