Heroes Volume Three: Villains - It’s Coming

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

SPOLIERIFIC COMMENTS: I hate to say I told you so, but I totally called the Elle/Sylar romance last week. Hello Sylar baby momma. I like them together. Now if they’ll only start working for the RIGHT SIDE! I think that they will redeem each other and then get the hell out of Pinehearst and back to Primatech

Not sure how I feel about 10 year old Hiro yet. Sure, it’s a convenient way to recapture some of the character’s adorable 1st season enthusiasm, but it’s a bit transparent. I also didn’t totally get how that happened. I will be rewatching the whole thing today as popapathy missed it :( last night and I want to watch with him.

NBC’s 2 Minute Replay of the 111708 Heroes Episode - It’s Coming

I’m warming to a depowered Peter. He’s a heroic enough character that a lack of flashy powers isn’t going to stop him. It doesn’t stop Batman, Robin or Captain America. I’d like to see him show more ingenuity though - there can’t ALWAYS be a handy exposed pipe full of flammable gas. I do hope the coming eclipse does give him a new powerset though.

Also did anyone else notice that Peter now has futurePeter’s scar?!?!? He got it when Sylar telekinetically tossed him out the window after Arthur stole his powers. One mystery solved!

And the full episode via hulu…

I hope we get more info on Sylar’s power - it seems like they are beginning to suggest that the various forms of power mimicry that we have seen (Peter Petrelli - empathy absorbtion, Sylar - creepy brain fiddling, and Arthur Petrelli - power stealing) may in fact be different aspects of the same power. Arthur seems to have a better understanding of the “hunger” that accompanies Sylar’s power than Sylar does. And how is that possible unless they have the same power?

It makes sense when you look at Matt’s dad Maury and the evolution we’ve seen of their telepathic abilities. As they grow stonger and more confident in their abilities, their skill increases as well. I bet Sylar will eventually be able to steal powers just like his dear old biodad.

This is the 3rd time I’ve recreated this post due to the server induced technical difficulties - let’s hope it stays this time.

    SPOILERIFIC OBSERVATIONS:
OK, who ELSE thinks that Elle is gonna wind up as Sylar’s future baby momma? After what we saw on Monday, we now know that Elle probably blames herself for the monster that Sylar became. He sought redemption - even attempted suicide rather than kill again, but she set him back on the murderous path. If he is ever able to defeat the beast within, I’m sure she’ll be there for him. It takes a redeemed sociopath to love a redeemed sociopath.

If they introduce another new character who can paint the future, he should wear full body armor and a protective helmet - seems to be a doomed powerset.

    TWO-MINUTE REPLAY

I don’t get the low ratings this season. There were many things wrong with season 2… too many characters, slow pacing, Maya’s and Hiro’s subtitled storylines (just weren’t as compelling as Hiro’s introduction in season 1) and most of all the big climactic event they were trying to stop was avoided by not dropping something. Talk about anti-climactic! Thus far, Volume Three: Villains has masterfully avoided all those pitfalls and yet all people and critics can do is complain!!!

November 10th Villains was an intriguing peek into the past of Heroes, exposing previously unrevealed connections and motivations between significant events. I know retconned stories often seem forced, and the timeline does seem a bight tight at times, but all-in-all I found the revelations to be both fascinating and major eye-openers.

It seems that some are determined to bitch about the show no matter how good the episodes get. Newsarama posted a whiney post-game bitchfest after Mondays show that was a nitpicky rant complaining about Clair being related to eleven characters (Petrelli grandparents, bio-dad Nathan, bio-uncle Peter, two half-siblings via Nathan, bio-mom Meredith, her bio-uncle Flint, her adoptive brother, and her adoptive parents) and the timeline being off.

The only explanation I can find for the low ratings is that many of the people who jumped on the Heroes bandwagon first season were lemmings who stopped watching mid-way through season 2 and didn’t return for season 3. The rest of the dropped viewers just didn’t care enough about the show after the long writers strike. Firing the writers who not only were very instrumental in Heroes initial success but also who have been delivering a fantastic season is both unfair and unwise and will do nothing to bring back the lost viewers.

The fact that with Elle’s Dad dead, the closest thing she has to a friend is Clair is soooo sad. Also whose bright idea was it to bring an out-of-control electric girl on an airplane (where they don’t even want you to turn on a cell phone or an IPOD). Both of them should have known better.

I hope this doesn’t end up with UBER Arthur Petrelli vs a bunch of depowered Heroes, but Arthur Petrelli vs a buch of REpowered Heroes might be interesting.

When did Maury escape from level 5? Were DL’s powers synthetic too? What powers does Arthur Petrelli have? Wat is i about Sylar’s power that drives Sylar/Peter to kill? We have seen eight of the twelve escaped villains (Stephen, Doyle, Echo, Knox, Maury, the German, Flint, Jesse), will the other four villains still appear this season? I KNEW Ando wasn’t dead. Hiro did just as I suspected, switching the sword for a fake. I though he’d come from a few minutes in the future to do it, but I always forget the freeze time part of his powers. So Papa Petrelli is a power-sucker… I didn’t get what he did to Adam Munroe

Also - here is the third Installment of CBR’s Behind the Eclipse. In which viewers ask producers the following questions and more… Some even get answered!

Will we ever see Matt’s child again? If Sylar lost most his powers, whose painting power was future Sylar using? How did Daphne know when Hiro was going to open the safe? What is Pinehearst Research? Do deleted scenes count? Who resurrected Nathan? Is Isaac’s Father alive? Who is older, Peter or Syler? Or are they twins? With Sylar’s ability, can Peter now study his own mind and unlock all the dormant abilities he hasn’t used yet? Will Sylar’s baby momma be revealed? We we ever see a flashback episode of the original Company members in action? And finally, should they have just let Peter blow up New York in season 1? Read and find out!

ANDO CAN”T BE DEAD!!!! Hiro MUST do a Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure style abuse of the timestream by visiting himself and Ando, swapping the sword for an elaborate prop and giving Ando a bloodbag to pop.

Wow! Quite an episode! Didn’t see Peter getting Sylar’s power or the resulting conflagration. Future Peter was worried about ripples in the past, well past Peter is making ripples in the future. His decisions will make that future into a super-powered hell on earth. NBC seems to be having technical difficulties with embedding the 2-minute replay, but here is the whole episode!

A heroic soul like Peter with Sylar’s powers and hunger… I think this season is REALLY going places. I figured about Matt and Daphne getting together but for some reason was surprised by Nathan and Tracy. Bad news for those of you who didn’t like the “girl with powers falls in love with flying guy who makes her feel less freakish” storyline last season might wanna go refill the popcorn when you see Tracy and Nathan. Who WAS the mother of Sylars little boy? Why didn’t Peter just telekinetically remove the bullet from Future Peter’s head? Wouldn’t he heal if it was taken out?

Also check out Behind the Eclipse Week 2 where CBR asks the following Questions of Heroes producers…

Is there more to Claire’s origins? What happened to Maury Parkman? How many Tracy Strauss’s are there? Can Peter mimic mimicked abilities? Does H.G.R. drink decaf? Was company founder Carlos Mendez Isaac’s dad? Why wasn’t Clair’s mom affected by the lack of oxygen in the metal crate? Does Adam have any children? Why do we keep seeing future visions of Clair in a past costume (the Odessa cheerleader outfit)? Are there power dampeners on Level 5? Will they ever reveal Kaito’s powers? Why does Sylar still have his telekinesis if he lost his other Volume 1 abilities?

This season, ComicBookResources welcomes us to BEHIND THE ECLIPSE. A weekly Q&A feature where Heroes writers/producers Joe Pokaski and Aron Coliete answer questions sent in by you the viewer about all things “Heroes.” This week’s BTE covers questions raised by the first few episodes of the hit NBC show, entitled “Heroes Volume Thee: Villains.” Send your own questions to heroes@comicbookresources.com

    Questions answered include:
How many episodes have been produced? What is Heroes: Volume 4 called? Whats up with the Heroes we haven’t seen this season? Can we look forward to more awesome special FX like Daphne’s speedstream? Why was future Hiro still wearing his glasses? Powers… product of blood, brain or adrenaline? What can Claire feel? Can she be killed? Does Sylar eat brains? How dead is Bob? Are the futures we’ve seen this season all the same future? Does Sylar still have all his powers? Is Mohinder the Fly? Why did future Claire think a gun could kill future Peter? Who is Susan Amman? and of course the one question on EVERYONE’s mind… What is future Mr. Muggles up to?

Red the answers to these questions and more at BEHIND THE ECLIPSE.

Newsarama’s review of “One of Us One of Them

    Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura

CBR sat down with Masi Oka, a.k.a. Hiro Nakamura to ask him about what the future holds for the new season of “Heroes,” his new speedster Nemesis Daphne and how to deal with your best friend killing you with powers he doesn’t have. Read all about it!

PLUS here is the 2 minute replay of the September 29th episode - “One of Us One of Them” (click link for full synopsis)

Great episode… The reaction of doc that “Tracy Strauss” tracked down switched my question from “how is Tracy related to Niki?” to “how many of her are there out there?” When Micah found a link, I thought TRIPLETS! But if Niki was engineered, there could be dozens of her… All with different powers?

I do have one problem with Sylar as H.R.G.’s partner. Haven’t they ever read a comic where a villain is conscripted to help with a bigger evil? You ALWAYS wire them with some kind of device that will kill or incapacitate them if out of control (a la Mystique and Sabertooth’s Forge-forged collars in the old X-Factor). Nothing stops Sylar from killing H.R.G. but the desire to please his new “mommy.” I’m surprised he didn’t “save” the villains just to get them alone for all their powers. This mad dog needs a leash.

Another question… does Sylar need a LIVE person to learn their powers? Could he cut open Niki’s dead head and learn super strength? Or does he need to observe the living brain?

    Thoughts? Theories? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  • Here is the synopsis/teaser for Monday night’s episode… I would summarize - but I don’t want to actually read it - just cutting and pasting it for those who do.

WHEN FOUR VILLAINS LAY SIEGE TO A BANK, ANGELA (CRISTINE ROSE) SENDS H.R.G. (JACK COLEMAN) AND HER DANGEROUS, NEW WALKING WEAPON IN AFTER THEM — When four ruthless, powerful Villains — “Knox” (guest star Jaime Hector), Flint (guest star Blake Shields), The German (guest star Ken Lally) and Jesse (guest star Francis Capra) — bust into a bank and take hostages, Angela (Cristine Rose) sends H.R.G. (Jack Coleman) and his shocking, new empowered partner in after them. Determined to derail a cataclysmic future, Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) must first find what he lost along the way. Meanwhile, Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) track Daphne (guest star Brea Grant) and part of “the formula” to Germany, but run afoul of The Haitian (guest star Jimmy Jean-Louis). Horrified by her ability, Tracy Strauss (Ali Larter) leaves Washington, D.C. to search for answers about Niki. A distraught Claire (Hayden Panettiere) asks Meredith (guest star Jessalyn Gilsig) to teach her how to fight. As his romance with Maya (Dania Ramirez) intensifies, Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) finds himself unprepared when his experiment yields some unexpected results. Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg and Zachary Quinto star. Randall Bentley, Ashley Crow, Noah Gray-Cabey, Ronald Guttman and Ntare Mwine guest star.

and what a premiere it was. They have their mojo back big time! It was truly heroic event, starting out with a gala Hollywood party filled with cast members and fans followed by 2 all new hours of Heroes!

This really felt like the first season to me. The suspense was there. The feel of dread when beloved characters are in danger. And I’m sure we’ll have less subtitles this season. The new characters are great. Hiro’s new speeding nemesis Daphne Millbrook has some great effects. Tracy Strauss - the Niki/Jessica Sanders lookalike appears to have a completely different set of powers as she froze the greatest american tabloid reporter (played by William Katt) solid and then accidentally shattered him. (I guess he’s not going to be a recurring character).

Hiro’s new storyline will again have him “save the world.” This time from some sort of apocalyptic death storm somehow created by a formula he is bound by his dead father to protect. Although I enjoyed it at the time (and again in DVD viewing), Heroes Volume 2 now seems like it was filler, sharing enough exposition and putting a myriad of plot point dominos in position to fall for the REAL epic of this season.

It was stated by Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander during a December 2007 Word Balloon podcast that viewers have seen Angela Petrelli’s powers used on the show, though by Peter and not Angela herself.
