Comic Con 2010 has left me with more news than is fit to print. Lets start with the revelations about the Green Lantern movie. The logo and first set of movie posters have been officially released. Other tidbits include the dropping of some Green Lantern names to be included in the film: Sinestro, Tomar-Re, Kilowog and Bzzd (who is dead in current continuity).
This YouTube clip of the Green Lantern mivie panel at Comic Con 2010 is exceptionally slow to load – so walk away and let it download and play in its choppy manner – than replay it after.
These images gives us a bit more to go on than the scant few published a few weeks ago in Entertainment Weekly. The cover image is thus far the only shot we’ve seen of the Green Lantern costume. While some hardcore fanboys are crying foul (as is want to happen whenever a 4 color hero goes live-action for the silver screen) because of some obvious differences between the traditional GL togs and what Ryan Reynolds is sporting in the photo. The familiar white gloves and black sleeves are gone, replaced with a muscle hugging GCI suit made of light. When asked about the differences, Reynolds said the following…
The white gloves aren’t there, and I think that’s fine because, specifically, they’re lame. Truthfully, we’ve only seen a tiny glimpse of the suit. We haven’t seen it in motion, and we haven’t seen the full suit as well.

I’ve been dying to see what happens now that we saw Sinestro grab the white ring. What has he become? What does the White ring do? Can he retain the power? How far will Hal Jordan do to take it from him? Why was the White Lantern source entity hidden for so long?

While I’ve been saying all along that we’d end up with White Lanterns… I must admit I didn’t anticipate who would wear the first white ring. Sinestro! I’d have kept it under my hat but DC already let the cat out of the bag with the recently released covers to Green Lantern #52.
This has me thinking all KINDS of interesting thoughts about what Brightest Day might be about… Sinestro was the ultimate law and order type… to the point of murderous fascism. Will GL and the rest of the New Guardians let him keep that level of power? What would he do with it? Will he lead the DCU into a Platinum Age or a Police State?
What if Brightest Day is Sinestro and a fascist White Lantern Corps goose stepping across the cosmos? I think that is FAR more likely than him becoming a genuine force for good. We’ll have to wait and see if he gets to keep the new bling.
In a much hyped, yet rare early morning interview over at DC’s TheSource, Dan Didio has revealed that after the Blackest Night, DC will publish Brightest Day… a 26 issue bi-weekly series written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi. It was also said that Fernando Pasarin will be handling the art on BRIGHTEST DAY #0, but otherwise, all Didio would say about the artists was that a number of wonderful artists will contribute to the book. Read Geoff Johns thoughts on Brightest Day here…
Now, for those of you who are sick and tired of all these events, I feel for you. One bit of good news. It seems that other than the main Brightest Day book, the series WILL spill over into other DCU titles, but instead of a plethora of tie in miniseries, a number of regular monthlies will have a Brightest Day banner on the cover instead.
Of course Green Lantern and the Green Lantern Corps will fall under the Brightest Day banner. As part of the event, DC is launching a new Flash monthly featuring Barry Allen. The Titans becomes a team led by Deathstroke with members including Cheshire and the Tattooed Man. What will it mean for the JLA? Answers to these questions and more when this kicks off in April! I think there is still more to be announced so expect an update later!
Guesses on who the glowing heroine on JLA #44 is? Halo? Dove?
Well, its all over the ‘net… In brightest day… In blackest night no Evil shall escape Ryan Reynolds might!
After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has chosen Ryan Reynolds to play the title character in “Green Lantern,” the studio’s live-action movie based on the DC Comics hero.
I hope they use the recent Geoff Johns additions to Hal Jordan’s origin.
I think he’s a good choice – I would have picked him for Wally West instead and gone with Nathan Fillion for GL (even BEFORE that great fan-made-trailer), but I can see it. I love Ryan Reynolds, I think Reynolds has been poised on the edge of being a real Hollywood leading man for a while now and I hope he really makes this movie a breakthrough hit.
Martin Campbell (who directed Goldeneye and Casino Royale) is on board to direct and while the budget – which has been rumored to have swollen to as high as $200 million for the space epic – is still not finalized, production is expected to begin in January of 2010.
Of course, this revelation immediately started speculation on how this will affect the previously announcedDeadpool movie from Fox starring Ryan Reynolds.
He recently starred in a comic-book movie, 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” in which he played Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth. The character is being developed for a spin-off in which Reynolds will star. He also played Marvel’s vampire hunter Hannibal King in “Blade: Trinity.”
If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds technically the second actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. A number of news outlets are reporting he is the first as did I, until HeroesNHunks reader kerutlj reminded us that Halle Berry played Storm AND Catwoman – but I can’t REALL fault them as far as I’m concerned that travesty with Patience Phillips instead of Selina Kyle was NOT the real Catwoman so it doesn’t count.
The Dead-Titan-on-Live-Titan violence escalates this fall! Black LanternHawk has his talons set for the female Hawk and Dove! Meanwhile, Red Star faces a frightful family reunion with Black Lanterns Pantha and Wildebeest, and Donna Troy faces her worst possible nightmare (AND ISN’T IT ADORABLE)! Plus, Black Lantern Terra simultaneously terrorizes and turns on Beast Boy!
I’m really looking forward to this book. It makes sense that Green Lantern would not take the recent losses during Final Crisis well and put together a more proactive team. The line-up is a bit odd (c’mon you can’t tell me you weren’t a bit surprised to see Congorilla, the bisexual blue Starman and Batwoman on the team). I’m all for it – we certainly need more heroic inclusion and we’ve never had 2 openly LGBT characters on a JLA team before. Previously we’d seen some cover art and a few random pages, but Newsarama showed us some real penciled pages from the book which is due in July.
What brings a team together? Justice! Batman and Martian Manhunter have been slaughtered. But he’s not the only hero to fall at the hands of villains. The murder has to stop, and it’s time to take the fight to the bad guys! Heroes have fallen and Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, Atom, Shazam, Congorilla (REALLY?) and Starman unite in a cry for justice!
This 6-part miniseries from James Robinson (STARMAN, SUPERMAN) and rising star artist Mauro Cascioli (TRIALS OF SHAZAM) pushes our heroes to the brink and beyond as evil can no longer be tolerated to win. But when Prometheus plans his revenge on not only the heroes, but on the very places they call home, will this new team be ready to pay the cost for the justice they seek? This time it’s personal – and it’ll only get more bloody before it’s over!
I WILL be interested to see what events unfold that result in this disparate group pulling together. I’m also curious how it is going to impact the main JLA title – especially now that it seems to be floundering as a supposedly flagship title that has been reduced to something that TRIES to tell a story or two in between crossovers.
Michael Kirwan of KirwanArts.com has shared with us a couple of “exclusive” images (as these pieces are not on public view on Michael’s site) They were a commission for a collector and they have not been published elsewhere.
This pair of images were created by commission for a stamp & art collector to commemorate the release of the Green Lantern and Plastic Man stamps released on July 20th 2006.
The collector sent Michael some stamped envelopes to have the blank areas “illustrated” with an original, stimulating adult image themed to the stamp. He found working with the odd aspect ratio and around the stamp to be an interesting challenge. Thanks for sharing Michael Kirwan! Now where are stamped envelopes with Superman, Green Arrow, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Hawkman. Someone tell that collector his collection is incomplete!
I’m always interested to see artwork of heroic hunks so don’t hesitate to send in your own submissions to fanboi@heroesnhunks.com. I do get a fair amount of stuff, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t show up right away. I sometimes hoard the best work until I have enough for one of my megapost galleries.
Not freaking bad for a fan-made trailer. Sure makes me believe that A Green Lantern movie could be the next big thing for DC if they get their act together. Watch carefully and you’ll spot a number of fan fave Green Lanterns Corps members (besides Dr. Horrible nemesis (and potential Celebrity Beefcake) Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan), including:Abin Sur, Killowog, Ch’p (or some other squirrelish Lantern), Galius Zed and Tomar-Re
Casting Captain Hammer as Hal Jordan? This might be the only way Hollywood could make up for giving us a Whedon-less Buffy movie.
This is jaronpitts‘ vision for a Green Lantern movie starring Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. He cobbled it together using AfterFX, zBrush and highlights from the following movies, tv shows, and trailers: Planet of the Apes, Serenity Trailer, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Stardust Trailer, The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring, Firefly, Dragonball Evolution Trailer, Galaxy Quest, The Fountain Trailer, Superman Returns Trailer, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Smallville, Justice League TAS, GI Joe Trailer, Contact, Star Trek Enterprise, Star Wars Episode III, The Mutant Chronicles Trailer, Iron Man, Star Trek Trailer, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe Cutscene, The Chronicles of Riddick, Kamen Rider, Bedtime Stories, MIB 2, Escape from Witch Mountain Trailer, The Matrix Revolutions, The Chronicles of Narnia – Prince Caspian and White Noise 2.
The dead rise across the DC Universe, bringing terror and darkness with them. What are the Black Lanterns? What do they want? Will Earth’s greatest heroes survive long enough to find out – or will they join the Black Lantern Corps?
Although I’m not quite ancient enough to remember first hand when the weakness to a Power Ring was wood. I have read enough Alan Scott back stories to have heard of it. It would be a nice nod to B-movies if all it takes is a wooden stake, but I’m thinking it’s hard to kill what is already dead.
It may take the combined strength of all the other colors of the spectrum to defeat the Black Lanterns if they get anyone who ever died in the DCU.
Longtime Green Lantern fans may remember the time when there were only 2 other colors for Hal Jordan to worry about – Yellow and violet. But no more. Geoff Johns’ remarkably faithful yet incredibly creative expansion of the original Green Lantern’s origin has brought us a whole new spectrum of allies and enemies to discover….
DC Direct has unveiled the final figure in its upcoming Blackest Night Series 2, the Black Lantern Martian Manhunter. Strangely enough they still haven’t added the Black Lantern from Series 1 – Earth 2 Superman to their own site.
I’m also especially pleased to see a good John Stewart Green Lantern. I only see one flaw… why are his wrist bands a different color of green? and metallic?
You should thank HeroesNHunks commenter “Clark Kent” for pointing out the Blackest Night teaser group shots released at Newsarama. Always appreciate when someone sends me something that improves a post!
There have been a lot of spoilerific events going on in comics lately so I thought I would start up a new feature covering major news from recent titles. I was along time DC Comics reader, but hadn’t REALLY ever been an avid Green lantern reader. I always liked the powerset and found both Hal Jordan and John Stewart to be capable additions to any JLA roster, but never followed the monthly title until the 2005 Geoff Johns relaunch and subsequent Sinestro War. In his current retelling of Green Lanterns “secret origin” (which, by the way we ALL thought we knew by heart and there was no way to really tell us anything we didn’t know – boy were we wrong!) Johns has woven a fine tapestry of classic and original material that blends so well its almost impossible to tell where the old leaves off and the new begins. In stores April 30th.
