If Hawk and Dove is cancelled why give Rob Liefeld 3 more DCnU titles to kill?

I’ll admit to enjoying some of Rob Liefeld’s earlier work way back in the 90s. I enjoyed Cable and Liefeld’s first Hawk and Dove at the time, but my tastes improved and I knew better than to like Youngblood – that was really bad and heralded my loss of interest in his work. His unfortunate homophobic reaction to Peter David’s fanning the flames of the on-record bromance between Rictor and Shatterstar into a full-fledged romance aside, his recent work has been pretty abysmal.

Hawk and Dove #7

It has been announced that as of February’s Hawk and Dove #6 Rob Liefeld replaced Sterling Gates as writer of the series. Apparently that announcement was about all it took to put the last nail in Hank and Dawn’s coffin. Hawk and Dove is cancelled as of issue #8, and with “new” character designs like the BLATANT Kraven The Hunter ripoff on the cover of #7 it’s no wonder reader confidence is low. I’d cancel it too.

What I WOULDN’T do is give Rob Liefeld 3 MORE DCnU titles to lead to the slaughterhouse. Luckily these titles aren’t any that I’d been reading, so when Rob takes over as writer & artist on Deathstroke and as writer on Grifter and Savage Sword of Hawkman with issue #9 I won’t have to drop them.

Deathstroke #9 Grifter #9 Savage Sword of Hawkman #9

Hawk and Dove is one of 6 cancelled titles (along with Blackhawks, Men of War, Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C. and Static Shock) to be replaced with new books in the second wave of the “NEW 52.” Liefeld’s assignment to these books has inspired an almost unanimously negative reaction (on forums, article comments, facebook alike) by the always outspoken internet populace. Which leads me to believe they WANT to kill these titles due to low numbers in preparation for a 3rd Wave.

All but 2 of DCnU’s #1 issues announced

SOLICIT INFO ADDED: To me, the biggest surprises in the latest 8 titles of the upcoming 52 #1 issues revealed would be the additional Wildstorm titles – tho the announcement of Voodoo #1 should have tipped me off. Well it sort of did, but I just didn’t dare hope. VERY excited about Stormwatch and Suicide Squad (BUT I WANTED SECRET SIX DAMMIT), and will check out Deathstroke and Blue Beetle. The rest of these I doubt I will follow much past #1… IF I even bother getting that. No way I’ll spend money on a western or war comic (even Blackhawks) and have zero interest in Omac or Grifter.

Harley Quinn! Deadshot! King Shark! They’re a team of death-row super villains recruited by the government to take on missions so dangerous – they’re sheer suicide! Who will be the first to crack under the pressure? Find out in SUICIDE SQUAD #1, written by Adam Glass (FLASHPOINT: LEGION OF DOOM) with art by Marco Rudy (THE SHIELD). It’s not easy being Jaime Reyes. He has to deal with high school, family and all the drama that comes with being a teenager. Also, he’s linked to a powerful scarab created by an alien race who seek to subjugate planets – or annihilate them. It’s up to one teen hero to turn this instrument of destruction into a force for good in BLUE BEETLE #1, written by Tony Bedard (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) and illustrated by Ig Guara (FLASHPOINT: GRODD OF WAR) and Ruy Jose. Slade Wilson is the best mercenary in the DCU, and he’s been doing this a long time. Some might say too long. But they’ll learn: Never turn your back on Deathstroke the Terminator. He won’t quit, no matter how high the stakes. A metahuman mercenary who made a living taking out the toughest targets, Deathstroke will reclaim his fearsome legacy by any means necessary in DEATHSTROKE #1, a new series from rising star Kyle Higgins (Batman: Gates of Gotham) and artists Joe Bennett and Art Thibert. The all-seeing Brother Eye satellite has unleashed a new beast upon the DC Universe in this smashing new series! A man loses control of his life as the omnipresent Brother Eye transforms him against his will into a powerful killing machine OMAC #1 written by DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio and co-written and illustrated by Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish. Kevin Kho has become an unwilling participant in a war between Checkmate and Brother Eye as he is transformed into the One Machine Army Corp known only as O.M.A.C.!
Ex-black ops agent Cole Cash is a charming grifter that few can resist. And yet he’s about to be branded a serial killer when he begins hunting and exterminating inhuman creatures hidden in human form – creatures only he can see. Can the biggest sweet talker of all time talk his way out of this one when even his brother thinks he’s gone over the edge? Find out in GRIFTER #1, written by Nathan Edmondson with art by CAFU and BIT (the team behind T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS). Welcome to a world waging a new kind of war that’s faster and more brutal than ever before. It’s fought by those who would make the innocent their targets, using computers, smart weapons and laser-guided missiles. The new enemy is hard to find – and closer to home than we think. Blackhawk is an elite group of mercenaries made up of brave men from around the world equipped with the latest in cutting-edge hardware and vehicles. Their mission: Kill the bad guys before they kill us. A set of contemporary tales that battle the world’s gravest threats, BLACKHAWKS #1 will be written by Mike Costa and illustrated by Ken Lashley. SGT. ROCK AND THE MEN OF WAR #1 is contemporary military story fighting under modern conditions. On the ground and on the front lines, a young, headstrong soldier known as Joe Rock (The grandson of the original Sgt. Rock) assumes command of Easy Company – a team of crack ex-military men financed by a covert military contractor. Will they survive the battle-scarred landscape carved by the DCU’s Super-Villains? Find out in this explosive new series from Ivan Brandon (Viking, DOC SAVAGE) and Tom Derenick (JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA)! Even when Gotham City was just a one-horse town, crime was rampant – and things only get worse when bounty hunter Jonah Hex comes to town. Can Amadeus Arkham, a pioneer in criminal psychology, enlist Hex’s special brand of justice to help the Gotham Police Department track down a vicious serial killer? Featuring back-up stories starring DC’s other western heroes, ALL-STAR WESTERN #1 will be written by the fan-favorite Jonah Hex team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Moritat (THE SPIRIT)!

With Stormwatch #1 (which I mentioned earlier) and 8 more of DC Comics 52 # issues revealed we have only 2 more titles to go!!! What will they be?!?!?! They’ve still only announced ONE Superman titles (but didn’t name it as Superman #1 or Action #1) so I’m betting the OTHER will be one of the final 2. But what is the other? If I had to guess, I don’t know – Cyborg #1?

It’s been said that these are looking and feeling like the “Ultimate” DCU and I cannot say I disagree. That said I DID like a few things about the Ultimate line. But there was a lot of crap too. The real question is WILL IT STICK? I’m thinking no. Will probably last a year or less, 2 tops. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the announced 52 don’t get to #12.

Titans: Villains for Hire – B&W unlettered Preview

Fabrizio Fiorentino early pencils and covers for TITANS: VILLAINS FOR HIRE. I still don’t love the idea of a bunch of villains running around with Deathstroke under the Titan’s logo. I do like Slade Wilson and LOVE Cheshire so I’ll be giving it a shot. I don’t see how the recently resurrected Osiris adds much to the team but raw power. He was inexperienced and naive enough to get tricked to death by a big bio-engineered alligator, so he’ll have to nut up to run with this crowd.

Generally the art looks good, but I miss Cheshire’s original asymmetrical Perez-era costume. We still don’t know who firechickie is. I didn’t follow the Crisis aftermath Ink series (drawn by Fabrizio Fiorentino), so I don’t really know what happened therein to the Tattooed Man. Did I miss much?

Titans: Villains For Hire SPECIAL #1

Since a number of members of the original “New Teen Titans” (Dick, Kory, Donna, Vic and Wally) have graduated to the JLA many had been wondering what will become of the title that was launched specifically to chronicle their tales. But then DC revealed that there would be a new team of Titans, led by Deathstroke? New members would include Cheshire and the Tattooed Man as well as a few surprises they are still keeping under wraps until Brightest Day #0

Titans: Villains For Hire

Their first mission: to assassinate The Atom! And for this team, failure is not an option so he might want to get his affairs in order. I’ve enjoyed a number of anti-hero centered books over the past few years (Secret Six, Thunderbolts, Dark Avengers), so I’m intrigued by this idea.

If you like the look of the image above, then you are in luck because cover artist Fabrizio Fiorentino is also the interior artist for Titans: Villains For Hire SPECIAL #1 due May 12 and written by Eric Wallace. More news on this title as it is revealed.

Booster Gold #22 – To save the New Teen Titans!

If you had told me during his first run that the character of Booster Gold could actually be a hero, I would not have bought it. But casting him as the greatest hero the world can never know is a stroke of genius and the stories practically write themselves. Not that the excellent creative team doesn’t deserve some mad props.

“Day of Death” part 2! Booster Gold travels back in time to prevent the Black Beetle from killing the New Teen Titans, but who will save Booster Gold from the Black Beetle — and what role will Deathstroke play?

And in the all-new Blue Beetle co-feature, Jaime must battle a flying robot army from destroying all of the people in El Paso!

If you overlooked this title because you think Booster is just a fame-hungry bozo – then he has you fooled. But don’t feel bad – the only person to see through his charade was Bruce Wayne himself.
