Magic Mike is a veritable bonanza of Celebrity Beefcake. In the title role, Channing Tatum has fanned his spark of fame into a veritable bonfire of publicity… landing People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive 2012.” Now we know the magazine isn’t infallible (remember Nick Nolte in 1992), but even so I’m a bit surprised fellow Magic Mike hotties Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer or Alex Pettyfer didn’t beat him out. So I thought I’d see which of the four celebrity strippers YOU guys prefer… Channing, Joe, Matt or Alex?
With my last post on the current music video meme homages to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, I seem to have put the cart before the horse, or in this case, a stud so worthy of the title of Beefcake that the Celebrity status is sure to follow. I actually found the various shirtless homages to Call Me Maybe first, then discovered Call Me Maybe Obsessed and decided to put up a post about them. But I hadn’t seen the ACTUAL video. So was completely unaware of the perfection of the naughty-looking tattooed muscle hottie next door to Carly Rae. A relatively quick Google search has revealed a wee bit about 24 year old Canadian Model/Rapper/Actor Holden Nowell…
Born January 14th, 1989, Holden Nowell hails from Calgary, Alberta. The blue-eyed brunette stands 6’2½” tall. His long lean chiseled torso will have you drooling. Sure to go places, this sexy bad boy next door had already posed for respected photographer Greg Vaughan and appeared in a Frankie Morello ad campaign before skyrocketing into public consciousness as “the Call Me Maybe Guy.” As of 2012, Nowell is repped by Mode Models (Mother Agency), Giovanni (Toronto) and Major (New York).
If you haven’t watched the video yet, do. Beauty like his is best seen in motion and you MUST watch to the end to catch the gay twist. Though I SHOULD warn you, it really IS catchy, I don’t mean typical bubble gum pop catchy – I mean bubonic plague catchy – you may find yourself unable to shake Carly Rae’s song out of your head once you hear it. Come to think of it I probably should have said that in the post with 4 videos to the song. Oh well, you should be hooked by now anyway.
If there were more lawn boys like Holden Nowell mowing the grass on the Wisteria Lanes of the world, we’d have a lot more suburban housewives (and their closeted husbands) trying to pull a Mrs. Solis (formerly known as the Mrs. Robinson maneuver). Sorry Jesse Metcalf – you’ve been deposed.
I prefer the way he was styled for the video – a happy medium between the clean cut fresh faced look from most of these shots and the tougher street look he sports as H da 6′Trey. I’m guessing from his song list, that he’s just playing gay, which is still pretty cool of him for his first major appearance.
Openly gay (at least officially out since 2006, but known to insiders) actor, singer, director, and magician Neil Patrick Harris (or NPH as he is affectionately abbreviated) has been a household name since he charmed his way into the hearts of America as Doogie Hauser MD, the fresh-faced, slightly awkward 16-year-old doctor with a genius intellect, an eidetic memory and the problems of an ordinary teenager on top of those of a Resident Surgeon at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles.
NPH was born June 15, 1973 in Albuquerque, NM. He became a professional child actor after being discovered at Drama Camp and was soon cast opposite Whoopi Goldberg in the 1988 drama "Clara’s Heart" (which won him his first Golden Globe nomination). In 1989, at the age of 16 (a teen playing a teen for a change) he took on the role of Doogie. Neil graduated from Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School an Honors student in 1991, 2 years into the show’s 4 seasons.
Riding Doogie’s popularity and his own talent and likability, NPH made a number of guest appearances on many of the most popular TV shows of the 90s and early 2000s (Blossom, The Simpsons, Roseanne, Quantum Leap, Murder She Wrote, The Outer Limits, Will & Grace, Law & Order, N3mbers, GLEE (for which he won a 2010 Emmy). In 2005 he again became a regular staple in America’s weekly TV diet as the roguish ladies man with a suit fetish, Barney Stintson on "How I Met Your Mother."
He’s brought to life a number of animated characters for movies, TV and even video games… ranging from villains on Justice League (Ray Thompson – Legends Parts 1 & 2), Batman The Brave and the Bold (The Music Meister), and heroes in the animated features Justice League: The New Frontier (Barry Allen/The Flash), Batman: Under The Red Hood (Dick Grayson) and voiced Peter Parker in all 13 episodes of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and the 2010 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions video game.
Although he also made a slew of TV movies too, NPH’s post Doogie career has NOT been limited to the TV screen. He had roles on Starship Troopers, The Next Best Thing, Undercover Brother, Beastly and The Smurfs, but is perhaps best known in movie theaters for playing a wildly fictionalized, hooker-branding, unicorn riding version of himself in the Harold and Kumar series. Another feather in his already well-populated cap was the starring role in Joss Whedon’s cult 2008 mid- writer’s strike web series Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog (a personal favorite of mine).
Neil Patrick Harris began his serious stage acting career with a 1997 stint as Mark Cohen in the rock musical RENT and since has performed on Broadway and in many famous theatres in shows such as Romeo and Juliet, Sweeny Todd, Proof, Caberet (during which he met partner David Burtka), Assassins and Company, and even directed a 2010 production of RENT at the Hollywood Bowl. An avid performer and fan of theatrical magic, Neil Patrick Harris serves on the Board of Directors of Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
Neil Patrick Harris began dating David Burtka in 2004 (according to an Ellen interview). The pair’s 2 children (via a surrogate), Gideon Scott and Harper Grace were born October 12, 2010 and already jet setting on St. Tropez playdates with the 7 month old son of Sir Elton John and David Furnish in August 2011. The couple announced their 5 year secret engagement on June 24, 2011 when New York passed the Marriage Equality Act. Much ado was made about the tweet, but they followed up the engagement announcement by saying the wedding date would be held until all this Prop 8 nonsense was cleared up. They may need to book that chapel.
The winner of the recent Celebrity Beefcake Poll is 5 ft 10½ model-turned-actor Colton Haynes. He born on July 13, 1988, in Wichita, Kansas, but grew up on a farm in nearby Andale. Colton Haynes is registered as half Cherokee. The youngest of 4 siblings (1 brother, 2 sisters), 15 year old Colton first started getting serious public attention after a Bruce Weber photoshoot for Abercrombie & Fitch.
When he began his modelling career, he was living in New York. Colton moved around a lot during High School, attending both Navarre High School in Florida and Andale High School in Kansas before graduating from Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, TX where he was nominated for prom king and voted "Most Likely to Be Famous."
In 2006 (when he was about 17 or 18), Colton Haynes posed for a homoerotic but non-pornographic photo-essay for XY (a now defunct magazine for gay teens) with photographer Sean Bentz. During the photoshoot, Colton Haynes wrassles shirtless with another boy and playfully tongue kisses him while the pair canoodle in a hot tub.
Fast forward a few years to 2011 when the Colton Haynes, while not exactly a household name is much better known. Since the XY shoot, not only has Colton been cast in a number of TV guest roles on shows such as CSI Miami, Privileged, Pushing Daisies, Always and Forever, and Melrose Place), but also was chosen for an ongoing role as a teen werewolf in the 2010 supernatual soap The Gates and as 17-year-old asshole Shane Dabello on Showtime’s 2010 series Look (pic above of him bangin the chick).
While The Gates did NOT earn itself a second season, it did place Colton on the radar of those who spend days and night on stud-watch to spot the next big heartthrob hunk. The Colton haynes feeding frenzy led to the inevitable rediscovery of the XY pictures which started appearing all over the place, until… bloggers started receiving letters from lawyer Bryan J. Freedman stating falsely that the images of his client were private and pornographic and demanding they be removed. I’m including them for now because the reasoning behind the request is utter bullshit. If asked to remove them I’ll do what other have – replace them with images of the images on the pages of XY.
Not only are the images not private (as they were taken for a photo spread that was printed in a national publication), they are also in no way pornographic. If you really want to see pornographic images of Colton you need look no further than Showtime’s Look – where he engages in soft core porn action (with a girl so that’s apparently OK).
I have no evidence as to where the attempt to de-gay Colton Haynes’ online reputation originated, or if he was even aware of it so I’m not going to get all worked up. He’s just trying to make a living. It would be nice if he didn’t feel he had to deny his past to do so. Whether it was a MTV publicist who took it upon themselves to set this in motion to prepare for the popularity of the then-impending debut of Teen Wolf or if Colton himself decided he’d made a mistake really doesn’t matter – but I’d put money on it being the former. I get a definite vibe from this one. Check out the comment left at this post quoting the publisher of XY as saying the images were of Colton and his boyfriend.”
This crop of CELEBRITY BEEFCAKE nominees includes: out-n-proud TV, Film and Stage actor – Neil Patrick Harris (a.k.a. NPH), Teen Wolf’s mentor werewolf – Tyler Hoechlin, Teen Wolf’s hot wanna-be werewolf – Colton Haynes, Steven R. McQueen – grandson of his namesake and Elena’s ghostly ex-girlfriend magnet little brother on Vampire Diaries.
After my post on the Bad Boy bloodsucking brother (Damon Salvatore played by Ian Somerholder), I’ve decided to do a few more on the boys of Vampire Diaries… next? on to Stefan a.k.a. Paul Wesley! And I’d watch for Steven R. McQueen, Michael Trevino, Zach Roering Matt Davis and Joseph Morgan in the not-so-distant-future.
5 ft 10 actor Paul Wesley was born Paul Thomas Wasilewski on July 23, 1982 in New Brunswick, NJ. Raised in Marlboro, NJ with his three sisters, Paul developed his first interest in acting in a third grade summer arts program.
Paul’s high school experience was regularly disrupted by his blossoming career. Like many attractive young actors, he started out by auditioning for soap operas. After being cast on an episode of Another World in 1999, Paul landed a role on Guiding Light (as Max Nickerson 1999-2001). Absences do to his shooting schedule actually got him kicked out of school. He attended three different high schools including all-boys Catholic school before graduating. His college experience at Rutgers University was cut short after only a semester when Paul dropped out to focus on his chosen profession.
Five years into his acting career, Paul made the (probably) wise decision (with his family’s permission) to change his tongue twisting last name to the simpler to pronounce surname Wesley.
Paul Wesley jumped from daytime to primetime when cast as Luke Cates in the short-lived CBS werewolf series – Wolf Lake, which lasted 5 episodes before it was killed. The final four episodes aired later on UPN. Despite it’s cancellation, Wolf Lake got Paul seen and let to later appearances on popular teen shows like Smallville (Lex Luthor’s bastard half-brother Lucas), Everwood (Amy Abbott’s friend Tommy Callahan), American Dreams (JJ Pryor’s best friend and football teammate Tommy DeFelice) and the OC (Donnie), as well as on a number of high rated dramas such as CSI:NY, Law and Order SVU, Crossing Jordan, Cold Case, 24 and Army Wives.
His starring role in the 2006 supernatural genre ABC Family Channel movie Fallen, spawned a miniseries of the same name in 2007. In both, Paul portrayed Aaron Corbett, a young man coming to terms with the recent discovery he is half-Angel. Switching from angel to demon, it was his role as Stefan, 1 half of the super sexy and oft-shirtless Salvatore brothers on CW’s smoldering series Vampire Diaries (Season One and Season Two are on DVD, show now in its 3rd season) that really catapulted him onto everyone’s radar.
Paul also speaks fluent Polish because up until the age of 16, he spent four months every year in Poland. Sorry to burst any fantasy bubbles boys, in April of 2011, Paul married long time girlfriend Torrey DeVitto in a secret ceremony in New York.
6ft3 out and proud star of stage and screen, Cheyenne David Jackson was born July 12, 1975 in Newport, Washington to a pair of evangelical born-again Christians. Although there was tension after Jackson moved to Spokane, WA and came out as gay, the family eventually accepted his sexuality.
The director of the fictional show choir juggernaut Vocal Adrenaline (on GLEE) was once dubbed "Broadway’s Sexiest man," grew up with a almost spiritual affinity for Wonder Woman and was lucky enough to meet and perform with Lynda Carter later in life.
Two years later Cheyenne Jackson stepped in to replace the injured star of the Xanadu: The Musical less than a week before opening night. He was the perfect replacement because he’d previously starred in workshop productions of the show (opposite Future 30 Rock co-star Jane Krakowski).
Jackson’s stint as Sonny in Xanadu earned him "Outstanding Lead Actor" nominations from Drama League and Drama Desk. The musical itself recieved several Tony nominations including "Best New Musical" which earned the cast a spot on the 62nd Tony Award show.
In 2008 Cheyenne Jackson released an album, was named Out Magazine’s and performed in Damn Yankees (again with Jane Krakowski ), then followed it by playing Woody in the critically praised Finian’s Rainbow.
He also starred in the Development workshop of Book of Mormon – from the team of Robert Lopez (who co-wrote the music for Avenue Q) and notorious South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
The musical is a religious satire about Mormon missionaries in a dangerous part of Uganda, and has a planned March 2011 opening.
His silver screen credits include a protrayal of 9/11 victim and hero Mark Bingham in the 2006 Academy Award nominated United 93 and roles in upcoming releases The Green and Price Check.
Since 1999, Cheyenne Jackson has been romantically involved with Monte Lapka, a Physicist from Seattle who he met while Monte was studying . The two formally filed for a Domestic Partnership in New York State during the summer of 2010 after ten years together and were married on September 3, 2011.
I first discovered the smoldering, mischievous and eerily ice-blue eyes of Ian Joseph Somerholder as young Paul Denton, a wickedly sexy "bisexual" (read gay) college student smitten with James van der Beek in in 2002 Roger Avery adaption of the Brett Easton Ellis novel Rules of Attraction. I was just as smitten as Paul, but can you blame me?
The 5 ft 9 inch actor/model was born December 8, 1978 in Covington, Lousiana. Someone in the family recognized his showbiz potential because from ages 10-13 he began a modeling career and by the wizened age of 17 he had graduated to acting and was working with prestigious acting coach, William Esper.
His first TV series was doomed Summer 2000 Dawson’s Creek spin-off Young Americans, but yet again someone saw something in in as his performance as he had graduated to the silver screen by 2002 as Paul Denton and by 2004 he had his breakthrough TV role – Boone Carlyle on LOST. Even though he died in the 12th episode, his character appeared in 7 more episodes between 2005 and 2010. Yet another reason I could never figure out WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON on that damn show.
In 2005 Ian Somerholder decided to bulk up a bit to move from teen to more adult roles and added 20-30 pounds of muscle to his slim frame. Which was probably just one more confusing factor of his post-death appearances on LOST.
Still cashing in on that killer smile and those hypnotic eyes, his modeling work for designers like Calvin Klein, Versace, Dolce & Gabanna, GUESS and Gucci earned him a spot on the DNA magazine list of top 10 male models (2006), but he still chooses to downplay that portion of his career (as do many former models) to avoid the stigma of "just being another pretty face." THE HORROR!
Other notable performances include a shirtless long-haired Marco Polo in the movie of the same name and the semi-Batmanesque Adam Knight on Smallvillle, but he was in many ways an actor without a venue until the CW cast him as Damon Salvatore, the bad boy brother of vampire the with a heart of gold on Vampire Diaries.
Ian Somerholder’s Damon is the main reason I really enjoy this definite guilty pleasure. The overly wordy and VERY cheesy diary voiceover gets far less prominent as the series progresses, and the wit and wisdom of Damon (despite – or possibly because of his loudly proclaimed evil nature) is my favorite part of the show. Sure I like Stefan’s immortal abs, but it’s Damon’s barbs that entertain me.
Actor/singer/songwriter Darren Criss became the youngest of 3 brothers (older brother Chuck Criss’ band is known as Freelance Whales) on February 5th 1987 in San Francisco. Criss has always had an interest in music. He started his musical career when 5 year old Darren asked his mom for violin lessons and stayed interested in the subject his whole life, collecting classic oldies and musical theatre as a young boy when his peers were collecting trading cards and action figures.
The half-Filipino and half-Irish internet personality attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory before going on to the University of Michigan where he becamed involved with the theater production group Team StarKid before graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance, Acting.
Darren Criss first gained public noteriety when the Team Starkid YouTube production of A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequal went viral in 2009 and 2010. Collectively the productions have garnered a respectable 25 MILLION views. Darren Criss is credited as songwriter on about half the songs and is also the primary songwriter for the upcoming Team Starkid production of Starship – an original musical to be performed February 2011.
The internet fame heralded a " big pile of blessings," including: debuting on three separate Billboard charts (#11 spot on Billboard’s Top Cast Albums – cast soundtrack for the original musical “Me and My Dick,” #30 spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart with his self released EP “Human,” and finally, the #19 spot on the Top Compilations chart with “A Very StarKid Album.”) the role of Josh Burton on the WB’s witchy prime-time drama Eastwick, an appearance on w Woodstock-themed episode of CBS’ Cold Case and being cast on GLEE with this audition video.
Tonight, November 9, Darren Cris joins the ensemble cast of GLEE as as Blaine, a gay student at McKinley rival Dalton Academy.
Glee creator Ryan Murphy stated, "Darren has a major, major arc…He sort of becomes Kurt‘s mentor and then maybe love–he had to leave his own school because of bullying and goes to an all-boys academy and finds acceptance because that school has a no-bullying, zero-tolerance policy. So Kurt really admires him and respects him. He plays someone who’s one year older than Chris‘ character, so he’s the old pro.
Darren Criss’ performance of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream caused quite a stir on most of the boy blogs (including mine – YES, I know I just posted this, but I want it to be part of this gallery as well – for as long as it lasts). One of a series of gender-switched songs planned for the Nov 9th anti-LGBT-bullying episode, this rendition set the heart aflame of gay men young and old all over the net. I’m definitely looking forward to his contribution to the rest of GLEE’s second season.
Besides musical theatre, his interests also include a love for Disney movies (he can recite the films that comprise the "Disney Rennaissance" in chronological order and refers to Hunchback of Notre Dame as one of the most underrated movies of all time) as well as the Beatles.
UPDATE: I’m adding YouTube videos of the Teddy Montgomery gay storyline to this post (near the bottom). So check back periodically to see what’s happened.
6 foot 2 blond 90210 hottie Trevor Donovan Neubauer was born October 11, 1978 in Mammoth Lakes CA (a ski resort town near Yosemite). He was studying to be a Graphic Designer when a modeling scout approached him in a mall and set him on the road to stardom.
The scout has an eye for talent – this is one fine man. Since I was able to find so many shots of him, this gallery is a bit more extensive than usual – ENJOY!
Modeling for Calvin Klein, Jockey and the Abercrombie & Fitch catalog (back when it was basically soft-core porn thinly disguised as fashion) quickly brought Trevor Neubauer (as he called himself then) to the attention of hunkwatchers worldwide.
Trevor made his jump from modeling to acting the same way many of his peers often do… Soaps. He portrayed Jeremy Horton (son of Dr. Mike Horton for those longtime Days watchers) in 2007. His daytime TV work led to small roles in the films Surrogates and Takers (though he was just a body double for Paul Walker in Takers).
Next up was his big commercial break. In 2009, billed as Trevor Donovan, he followed in the 90210 tradition of thirtysomethings playing teens when the 32 year old actor took on the recurring role of wealthy 18 year-old tennis prodigy/playboy Teddy Montgomery.
The character of Teddy has grown somewhat since his introduction. The revelation that one of the 90210 boys would be going gay in season 3 sparked much internet speculation about characters played by Trevor Donovan and Matt Lanter before the official "outing" of Teddy Montgomery.
Trevor’s new love interest (replacing Silver played by Jessica Stroup) will be portrayed by Canadian pop singer and Broadway performer Kyle Riabko. When asked about Teddy’s new direction, Donovan had this to say…
It was cool when they came to me with it, I was honored, flattered that they thought I could take on something like this and handle it in the way it’s being written and what we shot so far is done very, very smart, very intelligent. It’s really going to deal with his inner turmoil, the battle, and the struggles for self acceptance that I don’t think gets addressed enough.
FURTHER COMMENTS ABOUT THE GAY 90210 STORYLINE…
I could have done without him vomiting at the thought of what he’d done, but I think this is just the beginning of the journey to Teddy Montgomery’s self acceptance. We’ve established the self-loathing and can move on the the character growth. I liked the brief words between Teddy and his male lover in the first episode. I think the boys willingness not to tell may lead to a down-low relationship, that will enable Teddy to take the next step and come out. That is if he can stop with the homophobic slurs and neanderthal alpha male routine as a cover. Characters like this are so important in this day and age. Representation and acceptance in all forms of media and entertainment are the best way to combat the vestiges of hate left from previous generations too insecure to let go of their prejudice.
Trevor Donovan wants to be more than just a pretty face. He aspires to be like Paul Newman, who he considers to be "a man’s man, a lady’s man, and the epitome of a philanthropist." Branching out from his usual beach-tanned surfer type, he’ll be playing an "Aryan skinhead" opposite Martin Sheen in an upcoming film tentatively called City of Redemption.
