With Blackest Night drawing to a conclusion to make way for the dawn of the Brightest Day, I thought it apropos to share the cover to the final issue and a link to the full lantern spectrum set of light up Power Rings from DC Direct (at my Amazon store over at QueerSUPE).
The extra-sized conclusion to the most talked-about event in comics is here, and the results will change the course of the DC Universe for years to come. Earth has become the final battleground for life versus death, but how will our heroes fight back against the darkness of sentient space itself?
And what does the future hold for Green Lantern, The Flash and the rest of the world’s greatest heroes and villains? Find out here as the stage is set for the next epic era of DC Comics!

In a much hyped, yet rare early morning interview over at DC’s TheSource, Dan Didio has revealed that after the Blackest Night, DC will publish Brightest Day… a 26 issue bi-weekly series written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi. It was also said that Fernando Pasarin will be handling the art on BRIGHTEST DAY #0, but otherwise, all Didio would say about the artists was that a number of wonderful artists will contribute to the book. Read Geoff Johns thoughts on Brightest Day here…
Now, for those of you who are sick and tired of all these events, I feel for you. One bit of good news. It seems that other than the main Brightest Day book, the series WILL spill over into other DCU titles, but instead of a plethora of tie in miniseries, a number of regular monthlies will have a Brightest Day banner on the cover instead.
Of course Green Lantern and the Green Lantern Corps will fall under the Brightest Day banner. As part of the event, DC is launching a new Flash monthly featuring Barry Allen. The Titans becomes a team led by Deathstroke with members including Cheshire and the Tattooed Man. What will it mean for the JLA? Answers to these questions and more when this kicks off in April! I think there is still more to be announced so expect an update later!
Guesses on who the glowing heroine on JLA #44 is? Halo? Dove?

UPDATE: In Blackest Night #6, DC has FINALLY given us a look at the real covers for the 8 titles they are resurrecting for a special Blackest Night tie-in… If you haven’t read you Blackest Night #6 don’t look too closely or you might give something away (more on that later wink wink).
This January, the BLACKEST NIGHT mini series skips a month to make room for a very special Blackest night event. Eight classic titles from DC’s past will return from the dead for one month only to celebrate this mega-crossover throughout the DC Universe. Each series will pick up on its original numbering and feature characters from their original runs as they deal with the events currently unfolding in the DC Universe.
You can see the previously final issues of these titles in my original post on the subject.

I was sure that Diana was going to be significantly changed since they showed the blacked out mystery Wonder Woman figure in DC Direct’s Blackest Night series 4. I considered that perhaps she might end up a White Lantern (I have a feeling we still may see some), but the solicited cover on #2 of this 3 issue mini-series cinched it as a White Lantern wouldn’t be fighting Mera.
Black Lantern Maxwell Lord has risen and he seeks revenge and retribution for his death at the hands of Diana. Look for unexpected changes to await Wonder Woman in the course of this series as she plays a major role in the War of Light against the Blackest Night.
Fan-favorite writer Greg Rucka returns to chronicle the adventures of the Amazing Amazon in the DC Universe’s darkest hour! With the beautiful images of Secret Six artist Nicola Scott!
Any ideas about what the “unexpected changes” could be? I’m still guessing White Lantern since we already saw her as Black Lantern in Blackest Night #4, so having the big surprise be that she turns into a Black Lantern would be no big whoop. But then I’m wrong a lot. That is the problem with guessing.

With characters dropping fast I thought these casualties in the War of Light deserved a place of recognition for their premature (though not necessarily final we hope) fates. Welcome to the Hall of the Fallen. I’ll amend and bump the gallery as more heroes are taken from us in subsequent chapters of Blackest Night.
Over the decades that DC has been publishing comics, many heroes have been killed off only to return to life. At first many thought Blackest Night was happening because death wasn’t happy about all the resurrections, but now Nekron claims that the heroes to returned to life only because he allowed it. And unfortunately for our heroes, it seems what Nekron gives, he can take away… He’s already transformed Wonder Woman, Conner Kent, Animal Man, Kid Flash, Green Arrow, Donna Troy, Ice and Superman into Black Lanterns and told Flash and Green Lantern to drop dead too – but they haven’t succumbed… yet.
The following fallen heroes died during Blackest Night and either have or are likely to show up as Black Lanterns.
Although the heroes aren’t the only ones being targeted, their casualty list is a lot longer than the list of villains who have been killed to join the ranks of the Black Lanterns…
Now the final fate of these characters will likely be up in the air until the conclusion of Blackest Night. As I see it there are 3 possible outcomes… #1 The dead stay dead and all Black Lanterns end up with their “connection severed.” #2 The Black Lanterns are all somehow reunited with their souls and return to life. #3 Some combination of 1 and 2 with some characters rejoining continuity and others going willingly (or unwillingly as the case may be) back to their graves. THOUGHTS?

That’s right, this January, the BLACKEST NIGHT mini series skips a month to make room for a very special Blackest night event. Eight classic titles from DC’s past will return from the dead for one month only to celebrate this mega-crossover throughout the DC Universe. Each series will pick up on its original numbering and feature characters from their original runs as they deal with the events currently unfolding in the DC Universe.
POWER OF SHAZAM #48 Eric Wallace tells the tale in which Osiris returns from the dead to “chew the fat” with a very powerless Billy and Mary Batson.
CATWOMAN #83 Fabian Nicieza has the original Black mask explaining to Selina why shooting him in the head was a bad idea.
SUICIDE SQUAD #67 Gail Simone and John Ostrander are ringside for the epic fight between a very dead Suicide Squad and a possibly soon-to-be dead Secret Six.
QUESTION #37 Greg Rucka has the one answer for when two Questions meet.
PHANTOM STRANGER #42 Pete Tomasi reveals what Blackest Night means to the Phantom Stranger.
WEIRD WESTERN TALES #71 Dan DiDio (weirdly talking about myself in the third person) lets you know what all the dead old west characters are doing in the new west today.
ATOM AND HAWKMAN #46 Geoff brings you the double date from Hell, The Black Lantern Hawks work to reunite Atom with his long dead love, Jean Loring.
STARMAN #81 James Robinson returns to the book he made great and visits some old haunts.
They have yet to reveal the covers for these issues, but the teasers showed inverted black and white thumbnails of the final issues of each series. Check them out above and click on them to see the final issue cover in color.

Those of you who have been following the events of Blackest Night know that former Titan betrayer Tara Markov pays a pivotal role in Blackest Night Titans. In a move sure to incite a fanboy frenzy, DC asked the artist who created Terra to whip up this wicked homage to his legendary original cover to Teen Titans #30 (the issue Terra joined) as an alternate cover to Blackest Night Titans #3 (of 3) – due 10/28.
Who better to homage the cover to NEW TEEN TITANS (vol. 1) #30 than its original artist George Pérez? He even did a baby Black Lantern Wildebeest on the logo! And Hi-Fi Design knocked the coloring out of the park. You might see Pérez and Hi-Fi team up again on another Titans project in 2010. Stay tuned!
As usual the details are flawless. We have BL Hawk instead of Robin, BL Phantasm in Cyborg’s place, BL Pantha and BL Baby Wildebeest in the place of Starfire and Changeling, BL Tula and BL Lilith stand in for Donna and Raven, and Tempest in Kid Flash’s position. A terrifyingly beautiful cover.
Unlike some who just don’t seem to get that the fun of Blackest Night is that it is terrifying, I am TRULY enjoying this cosmic crossover event. I cannot tell you the last time I audibly exclaimed OH SHIT! while reading a comic. The horrifying aspect of what the Black Lanterns are up to isn’t just inciting emotional responses in the heroes, it has my heart pounding as I turn the page. I cannot remember when a comic EVER had this kind of effect. If you aren’t reading it, START! All the Blackest Night minis have been excellent thus far, but Blackest Night : Titans is the best (not to mention the best Titans-related book to hit stands in a number of years).

Check out these December solicit covers to get an idea of what is in store for the DCU as Blackest Night unfolds… Red Lantern Guy Gardner, Wonder Woman vs Black Lantern Genocide (and I bet Max Lord will make an appearance as we saw him up and walking in Blackest Night #3), Black Lanterns Alexander Luthor, Blue Beetle, Stealth, Celsius, Mr Terrific, Sandman and Dr. Midnight will be bedeviling former teammates and namesakes.
Click on the covers below to see them fullsize AND read the complete solicited text for the issue…
But at least it looks like Hal Jordan is gathering the spectrum. If he can focus all their light together… will they all become White Lanterns? Who knows, but I think White lanterns could have something to do with who lives and who returns to the grave once this is all over?

Since we first found out the concept behind Blackest Night, it was obvious that the Titans would have a worse time of it than most teams due to their long list of fallen members. The first issue of their part of this epic tale did not disappoint and from the looks of these pages the 2nd part just gets better/more terrifying.
Donna Troy deals with Black Lantern versions of her long dead husband – Terry Long and baby Robert (WTF? he wasn’t a baby – he was 3 when he died). Plus after Omen’s illusion is interrupted, Gar does his best to stop first love Terra from ripping out his heart literally (she’s already done it figuratively). Oh yeah, it also looks like the new Hawk has lost her heart to the original. Dove managed to avoid being touched by one Black Lantern Hawk, how will she far against two?
With top notch story and characterization by JT Krul and dazzling art by Ed Benes, Blackest Night: Titans is definitely one of the do not miss aspects of this series.

The BLACKEST NIGHT is upon us, and every corner of the DCU is rife with reanimated heroes and villains. No one is unaffected, but some teams — like the TITANS — have seen more than their share of death. On August 26th, the first issue of BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS from writer J.T. Krul and former cheesecake artist Ed Benes hits the stands. Don’t miss it as the Teen and adult Titans come face to face with the deadly embrace of revenant friends, loved ones and enemies.
Here is a preview of Ed Benes ( Gen¹³, Birds of Prey, Supergirl, Superman, and Justice League of America.)
Almost didn’t recognize Changeling without color.
BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS editor Brian Cunningham was kind of enough to give us the skinny on the mini-series. Take it away, Brian:
“Working on these characters is something Ed Benes has wanted for a very long time, so we are more than happy to oblige him! And he has a wonderful script to draw from. J.T. Krul worked closely with Geoff Johns to stay true to the spirit of the ‘Blackest Night’ event, and what they came up with is a horror movie on paper. I really feel both ‘Blackest Night’ fans and Titans fans will be VERY happy with this mini-series.”
I REALLY am enjoying this event thus far. In all it’s issues, Final Crisis never delivered 1 tenth of the menace, terror and anticipation of the first issue of Blackest Night. I LOVED Blackest Night: Superman #1 and with all the potential Black Lanterns of the Titans, this should be exponentially enjoyable!

Now for those of you who don’t want to know who he is until he is revealed in Issue #5, then don’t click on the comment link or read the rest of this entry. In fact just scroll past this post entirely. An image of the Big Bad can be found on the cover of Issue #5 (first row – 5th image), but I didn’t include his name in the caption. I’ve included some character sketches of key Black Lanterns by series artist Ivan Reis as well as 2 variant covers for the first 2 issues, solicited covers for issues 3-5 and tie-ins in October and November.

In Issue #1, we lost Hawkman and Hawkgirl to Black Lantern Ralph and Sue Dibney. Who will fall in issue #2? Well I’ll be going into detail on that after the jump, so don’t go commenting or reading the rest of this entry until you have read it for yourself.
It is a testament to Geoff Johns‘ writing that this epic event is starting out with far more promise than Final Crisis did (as far as the story goes that is). With every panel, it feels far more dire a situation than some homeless Evil Gods run amok. The dead have risen across the universe and they are adding to their ranks with every kill. We already have some powerful corpses on the board and those are just the ones who started out dead – if they manage to kill any more heavy hitters…
One black mark on an otherwise spectacular issue was pointed out by a blogger at Newsarama. The solicit for Blackest Night#2 said it was 40 pages, it only had 24 story pages, 8 pages of ads, a 3 page waste of “Black Hand’s diary” and a 5 page preview of Superman Secret Origin #1 (which looks amazing) for the same price as issue #1 ($3.99) , but #1 had 39 PAGES OF STORY and 8 pages of ads. FOUL!!!
As much as I think I will enjoy the ride, I can’t help but speculate on what could possible resolve this ungodly situation. Read that and a play-by-play of issue #2 after the jump!

As if you couldn’t tell from ALL the teasers and promo images, Blackest Night is the biggest thing going on in the DCU. Long story short: The willpower-derived emerald energy of Green Lantern’s power ring is only one of a full spectrum and a cosmic color war has broken out between the factions. There is ONE corps that has a definite advantage… The Black Lanterns are the resurrected dead of the DCU come back to annihilate all sentient life, and they are starting with those who have cheated death…
Also the Anti-Monitor is definitely staging a comeback. I’d guess somewhere around issues 6-7.
Now as I have mentioned more than a few times, just about every hero in the DCU has some kind of dead loved one, mentor or arch foe who’s return as a Black Lantern will be an emotionally-crippling waking nightmare. So Now that the first issue is out lets hash out whats going on.
I’m going to keep all spoilerific details after the jump so click or on the comments link to read the earth-shattering, status-quo changing events as they happen!!!

Looks like we can add another 2 potential Black Lanterns to the mix. In the upcoming issue of Titans long founding member Tempest finds the corpses of his long missing wife Dolphin and son Ceridian. Convenient timing and a waste of a great character who has been around for 41 years.
Prelude to BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS! Tempest returns! And how will his arrival affect the Titans? The last page not only answers this question, but will have fans buzzing.
As if dead Aquaman wasn’t going to be enough of a mind-fuck for poor Garth. He and Donna will have to attend a parents of zombie children support group.

The Dead-Titan-on-Live-Titan violence escalates this fall! Black Lantern Hawk has his talons set for the female Hawk and Dove! Meanwhile, Red Star faces a frightful family reunion with Black Lanterns Pantha and Wildebeest, and Donna Troy faces her worst possible nightmare (AND ISN’T IT ADORABLE)! Other Black Lanterns revealed include “Superman’s dead bride” (Earth 2 Lois Lane – or is our Lois doomed?), Ronnie Raymond, Psycho Pirate, Jack Drake (Tim’s Dad), the fallen Sinestro Corps members and a bunch of dead interstellar convicts from Oa.
