With characters dropping fast I thought these casualties in the War of Light deserved a place of recognition for their premature (though not necessarily final we hope) fates. Welcome to the Hall of the Fallen. I’ll amend and bump the gallery as more heroes are taken from us in subsequent chapters of Blackest Night.
Over the decades that DC has been publishing comics, many heroes have been killed off only to return to life. At first many thought Blackest Night was happening because death wasn’t happy about all the resurrections, but now Nekron claims that the heroes to returned to life only because he allowed it. And unfortunately for our heroes, it seems what Nekron gives, he can take away… He’s already transformed Wonder Woman, Conner Kent, Animal Man, Kid Flash, Green Arrow, Donna Troy, Ice and Superman into Black Lanterns and told Flash and Green Lantern to drop dead too – but they haven’t succumbed… yet.
The following fallen heroes died during Blackest Night and either have or are likely to show up as Black Lanterns.
Although the heroes aren’t the only ones being targeted, their casualty list is a lot longer than the list of villains who have been killed to join the ranks of the Black Lanterns…
Now the final fate of these characters will likely be up in the air until the conclusion of Blackest Night. As I see it there are 3 possible outcomes… #1 The dead stay dead and all Black Lanterns end up with their “connection severed.” #2 The Black Lanterns are all somehow reunited with their souls and return to life. #3 Some combination of 1 and 2 with some characters rejoining continuity and others going willingly (or unwillingly as the case may be) back to their graves. THOUGHTS?

Since we first found out the concept behind Blackest Night, it was obvious that the Titans would have a worse time of it than most teams due to their long list of fallen members. The first issue of their part of this epic tale did not disappoint and from the looks of these pages the 2nd part just gets better/more terrifying.
Donna Troy deals with Black Lantern versions of her long dead husband – Terry Long and baby Robert (WTF? he wasn’t a baby – he was 3 when he died). Plus after Omen’s illusion is interrupted, Gar does his best to stop first love Terra from ripping out his heart literally (she’s already done it figuratively). Oh yeah, it also looks like the new Hawk has lost her heart to the original. Dove managed to avoid being touched by one Black Lantern Hawk, how will she far against two?
With top notch story and characterization by JT Krul and dazzling art by Ed Benes, Blackest Night: Titans is definitely one of the do not miss aspects of this series.

The BLACKEST NIGHT is upon us, and every corner of the DCU is rife with reanimated heroes and villains. No one is unaffected, but some teams — like the TITANS — have seen more than their share of death. On August 26th, the first issue of BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS from writer J.T. Krul and former cheesecake artist Ed Benes hits the stands. Don’t miss it as the Teen and adult Titans come face to face with the deadly embrace of revenant friends, loved ones and enemies.
Here is a preview of Ed Benes ( Gen¹³, Birds of Prey, Supergirl, Superman, and Justice League of America.)
Almost didn’t recognize Changeling without color.
BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS editor Brian Cunningham was kind of enough to give us the skinny on the mini-series. Take it away, Brian:
“Working on these characters is something Ed Benes has wanted for a very long time, so we are more than happy to oblige him! And he has a wonderful script to draw from. J.T. Krul worked closely with Geoff Johns to stay true to the spirit of the ‘Blackest Night’ event, and what they came up with is a horror movie on paper. I really feel both ‘Blackest Night’ fans and Titans fans will be VERY happy with this mini-series.”
I REALLY am enjoying this event thus far. In all it’s issues, Final Crisis never delivered 1 tenth of the menace, terror and anticipation of the first issue of Blackest Night. I LOVED Blackest Night: Superman #1 and with all the potential Black Lanterns of the Titans, this should be exponentially enjoyable!

In Issue #1, we lost Hawkman and Hawkgirl to Black Lantern Ralph and Sue Dibney. Who will fall in issue #2? Well I’ll be going into detail on that after the jump, so don’t go commenting or reading the rest of this entry until you have read it for yourself.
It is a testament to Geoff Johns‘ writing that this epic event is starting out with far more promise than Final Crisis did (as far as the story goes that is). With every panel, it feels far more dire a situation than some homeless Evil Gods run amok. The dead have risen across the universe and they are adding to their ranks with every kill. We already have some powerful corpses on the board and those are just the ones who started out dead – if they manage to kill any more heavy hitters…
One black mark on an otherwise spectacular issue was pointed out by a blogger at Newsarama. The solicit for Blackest Night#2 said it was 40 pages, it only had 24 story pages, 8 pages of ads, a 3 page waste of “Black Hand’s diary” and a 5 page preview of Superman Secret Origin #1 (which looks amazing) for the same price as issue #1 ($3.99) , but #1 had 39 PAGES OF STORY and 8 pages of ads. FOUL!!!
As much as I think I will enjoy the ride, I can’t help but speculate on what could possible resolve this ungodly situation. Read that and a play-by-play of issue #2 after the jump!

As if you couldn’t tell from ALL the teasers and promo images, Blackest Night is the biggest thing going on in the DCU. Long story short: The willpower-derived emerald energy of Green Lantern’s power ring is only one of a full spectrum and a cosmic color war has broken out between the factions. There is ONE corps that has a definite advantage… The Black Lanterns are the resurrected dead of the DCU come back to annihilate all sentient life, and they are starting with those who have cheated death…
Also the Anti-Monitor is definitely staging a comeback. I’d guess somewhere around issues 6-7.
Now as I have mentioned more than a few times, just about every hero in the DCU has some kind of dead loved one, mentor or arch foe who’s return as a Black Lantern will be an emotionally-crippling waking nightmare. So Now that the first issue is out lets hash out whats going on.
I’m going to keep all spoilerific details after the jump so click or on the comments link to read the earth-shattering, status-quo changing events as they happen!!!

Looks like we can add another 2 potential Black Lanterns to the mix. In the upcoming issue of Titans long founding member Tempest finds the corpses of his long missing wife Dolphin and son Ceridian. Convenient timing and a waste of a great character who has been around for 41 years.
Prelude to BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS! Tempest returns! And how will his arrival affect the Titans? The last page not only answers this question, but will have fans buzzing.
As if dead Aquaman wasn’t going to be enough of a mind-fuck for poor Garth. He and Donna will have to attend a parents of zombie children support group.

The Dead-Titan-on-Live-Titan violence escalates this fall! Black Lantern Hawk has his talons set for the female Hawk and Dove! Meanwhile, Red Star faces a frightful family reunion with Black Lanterns Pantha and Wildebeest, and Donna Troy faces her worst possible nightmare (AND ISN’T IT ADORABLE)! Plus, Black Lantern Terra simultaneously terrorizes and turns on Beast Boy!
Other Black Lanterns revealed include “Superman’s dead bride” (Earth 2 Lois Lane – or is our Lois doomed?), Ronnie Raymond, Psycho Pirate, Jack Drake (Tim’s Dad), the fallen Sinestro Corps members and a bunch of dead interstellar convicts from Oa.

This Black Lantern Roll Call includes… Tula (Aquagirl), Al Pratt (the original Atom), Sue Dibny, Ronnie Raymond (the original Firestorm), Digger Harkness (Captain Boomerang), Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), Maxwell Lord, Ryan Kendall (Black Condor), Dee Tyler (Phantom Lady), Roy Lincoln (The Human Bomb), Roger Hayden (Psycho Pirate), Vic Sage (The Question), Ralph Dibny (Elongated Man), Jean Loring (Eclipso), Arthur Light (the original Dr. Light) and J’onn J’onzz (The Martian Manhunter).
And doesn’t even include all the characters revealed as Black Lanterns! Don’t forget about Terra, Earth 2’s Superman, Aquaman and the Flying Graysons (though how would Black Hand even know to raise them? Nightwing’s (now Batman) identity isn’t public, so how would anyone know to resurrect his parents to screw with him?

Of all supergroups in the history of comics, The Teen Titans seem to have the largest group of honored dead. And it gonna bit them in the ass this summer when the Black Lanterns come to town. We’ve seen the cover sporting Changeling embracing a dead Terra. Who else is going to show up???
The dead are (alphabetically): Anima, Aquagirl (Tula) Baby Wildebeest, Bushido, Danny Chase, Dove (Don Hall), Duela Dent, Gnarrk, Hawk (Hank Hall), Kole, Lightning, Molecule, Omen (Lilith Clay), Osiris, Pantha, Power Boy, Terra I, Terra II and Thunder
I left off the recently resurrected Superboy and Kid Flash although since they were brought back in the future, couldn’t they still be Black Lanterns in the present? I also left off a hoard of other previously dead Titans who have since been revived, or retconned to life: Jericho, Raven, Donna Troy, Jason Todd, Golden Eagle, Bombshell and Young Frankenstein.
So do you think ALL these dead Titans are going to descend upon Titans Tower like a cosmic zombie super-plague? I hope they paid their insurance premiums this month. I bet they went up after Ravager blew up half the place to take out the Terror Titans.

July and August solicts for DC Comics are shedding some light on their upcoming crossover event – Blackest Night. From the looks of released covers and ad teasers we can look forward to (or dread – depending upon your point of view) Black Lantern versions of Earth 2’s Superman, the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman (But I thought there was a panel in Final Crisis that suggested Arthur Curry was back from the dead?), Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond), Terra (could be 1 or 2, but the original is more likely) and possibly more dead Titans, The Flying Graysons, and dead Sinestro Corps members (who died once lethal action was sanctioned by the Guardians of the Universe – and yet another decision by the little blue guys bites them in the ass).
The dead rise across the DC Universe, bringing terror and darkness with them. What are the Black Lanterns? What do they want? Will Earth’s greatest heroes survive long enough to find out – or will they join the Black Lantern Corps?
Although I’m not quite ancient enough to remember first hand when the weakness to a Power Ring was wood. I have read enough Alan Scott back stories to have heard of it. It would be a nice nod to B-movies if all it takes is a wooden stake, but I’m thinking it’s hard to kill what is already dead.
It may take the combined strength of all the other colors of the spectrum to defeat the Black Lanterns if they get anyone who ever died in the DCU.

DC Direct has unveiled the final figure in its upcoming Blackest Night Series 2, the Black Lantern Martian Manhunter. Strangely enough they still haven’t added the Black Lantern from Series 1 – Earth 2 Superman to their own site.
I’m also especially pleased to see a good John Stewart Green Lantern. I only see one flaw… why are his wrist bands a different color of green? and metallic?
You should thank HeroesNHunks commenter “Clark Kent” for pointing out the Blackest Night teaser group shots released at Newsarama. Always appreciate when someone sends me something that improves a post!
