10 SUPER Significant LGBT Milestones in 2011′s Comics

The DCnU & Marvel really ARE committed to LGBT inclusion! 2011 saw LGBT characters created from scratch, outed, rebooted into a whole new continuity or even resurrected by apologetic writers as 4color LGBT relationships become far more commonplace, even reaching distant places like the 30th century and THE Archie Universe’s perpetually squeeky clean Riverdale.

The top LGBT Stories in Comics 2011

Avengers Academy’s former child star and current famemonger, Striker came out both as gay and as a victim of childhood sexual abuse whose emerging electrical powers killed his pervy bad-touching manager.

The solicited cover for 2012′s Life With Archie revealed that the issue will bring comics first interracial gay military wedding to Riverdale.

The Teen Titans added Bunker, an out and proud new flamboyant young Mexican gay character to the team roster and the DCnU.

After much hype and stalling, Gotham’s resident lipstick lesbian vigilante – Batwoman finally began her own title with the 2011 launch of the DCnU.

The return of Rictor’s mutant seismic powers in the pages of Avengers The Children’s Crusade has resolved the feelings of powerlessness he felt and may impact his romantic relationship with his X-Factor teammate Shatterstar.

Along with a number of former Wildstorm Universe residents, Apollo and Midnighter have been mainstreamed into the DCnU and their relationship will unfold anew in the pages of Stormwatch.

the 2011 4 issue miniseries that followed up Riverdale’s new gay teen, Kevin Keller‘s 2010 Archie Universe debut was so well received that he’ll be getting his own ongoing miniseries in 2012.

James Robinson resurrected gay hero Tasmanian Devil after he realized he’d killed one of the few LGBT heroes in the DCU for a rug joke. The character has yet to surface in the post-Flashpoint DCnU.

A gay relationship between Legion Academy students Powerboy and Gravity Kid was subtly revealed at in the pre-DCnU pages of Adventure Comics – the relationship has yet to be confirmed post Flashpoint.

Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass were confirmed as girlfriends – but that was pre-Flashpoint. We’re still awaiting confirmation that the relationship has made it into the DCnU.

I composited the above image myself – so please link back if you repost it.

DCnU & Marvel are committed to LGBT Super-Heroes

Both Marvel comics and DC’s “New 52″ show a commitment to inclusion of LGBT characters in some of their best titles. I’ll likely expand and update this post to include more titles, so leave a comment to point out any I left out. If it’s a DC title, sightings should be post relaunch.

DC’s New 52 line up of titles contains a number that prominently feature LGBT characters. Stormwatch chronicles the future relationship between gay Superman and Batman analogues Apollo and The Midnighter. Their story has been told, but never in the DCU proper. Teen Titans will introduce Bunker, a flamboyant gay teen hero. Batwoman follows the costumed adventures of lesbian socialite Kate Kane. The Shade is a new maxi-series set in Opal City and the cast includes bisexual blue alien Mikasl Tomas a.k.a. Starman. No sign of recently resurrected Aussi gay were-hero Tasmanian Devil.

Stormwatch features Apollo and The Midnighter Teen Titans features new flamboyant gay mexican teen Bunker Batwoman features prominant Gotham lesbian socialite Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman The SHade maxiseries features bisexual blue alien Mikaal Tomas a.k.a. Starman

Marvel may not have rebooted their entire universe recently, but nonetheless also have a number of high profile titles showcasing LGBT characters. The most popular LGBT characters of the Marvel U would be gay teen Young Avengers… Wiccan and Hulkling. A close second would be gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar from Peter David’s brilliant X-Factor. Daken Akihiro, the tattooed, bisexual bad boy son of Wolverine is fast becoming a fan favorite. Speaking of Wolverine, when he scooped up the X-kids and brought them back-to-school, he included Anole, Graymalkin and Bling. Karma has also stated Weschester is her destination.

Avengers: The Children's Crusade features gay Young Avengers Wiccan and Hulkling as well as X-Factor's gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar X-Factor features gay couple Rictor and Shatterstar Daken: Dark Wolverine features Daken Akahiro - Wolverine's bisexual bad boy son. Wolverine and the X-Men features a number of LGBT mutants: Anole, Graymalkin, Bling and Karma

If you think I forgot about Alpha Flight… not so fast. You may not have heard that news of it’s status as an ongoing title was premature. Alpha Flight is cancelled as of issue #8.

DCnU reveals more #1 Issues: Barbara Gordon, Batgirl?

SOLICIT INFO ADDED: The next batch of the 52 new #1 issues revealed by DC Comics are from the Batman Family. I threw in the single cover that TheSource revealed for Green Lantern #1 when they announced the rest of the new #1 Lantern titles.

I’m torn. The idea of Barbara Gordon kickin’ ass as Batgirl again is great! BUT I REALLY love Oracle and do NOT want to see THAT Barbara Gordon erased. To give her the use of her legs back is kind of a cheap stunt (unless elements of this retcon are temporary – which I’m beginning to suspect). She was more important as Oracle not only as support to the entire DCU hero network, but also as a wheelchair-bound hero and role model for readers in similar circumstances. Birds of Prey won’t be the same without her at the comm.

I’m liking Dick as a red Nightwing – I prefer him in that role. They keep threatening to give us Batwoman #1. I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m NOT liking Dinah’s new look on the cover Bird of Prey #1. She needs boots. It looks like she’s fighting bad guys in fishnets and flip flops. I KNOW she is a martial artist – but the way she fights, those boots are another weapon. Starfire and Arsenal teaming up with Jason Todd as “The Outlaws?” So which of them gets Kory? Think they take turns? She’s becoming the carnival ride of the DCU.

Barbara Gordon is back as Batgirl – and she’s going to have to face the city’s most horrifying new villains as well as the dark secrets from her past. You won’t want to miss this stunning debut issue from fan-favorite BIRDS OF PREY writer Gail Simone and artists Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes. Dick Grayson flies high once more as Nightwing in a new series from hot new writer Kyle Higgins (BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM)! As Dick embraces his identity, Haley’s Circus, the big top where he once performed with his family, returns to Gotham - bringing with it a history of murder, mystery and superhuman evil. Nightwing must confront friends and enemies from his past as he searches for the source of an even greater evil. The highly-anticipated new series begins at last with BATWOMAN #1 from the multiple award-winning creative team of J.H. Williams III, Haden Blackman and Amy Reeder. In “Hydrology,” part 1 of 5, Batwoman faces deadly new challenges in her war against Gotham City’s underworld – and new trials in her life as Kate Kane. Who or what is stealing children from the barrio, and for what vile purpose? Will Kate train her cousin, Bette Kane (a.k.a. Flamebird), as her new sidekick? How will she handle unsettling revelations about her father, Colonel Jacob Kane? And why is a certain government. One is wanted for a murder she didn’t commit. The other is on the run because she knows too much. They are Dinah Laurel Lance and Ev Crawford – a.k.a. Black Canary and Starling – and together, as Gotham City’s covert ops team, the Birds of Prey are taking down the villains other heroes can’t touch. But now they’ve attracted the attention of a grizzled newspaper reporter who wants to expose them, as well as a creepy, chameleon-like strike team that’s out to kill them. Mystery novelist ands comics writer Duane Swierczynski teams up with Jesus Saiz for BIRDS OF PREY #1, the first issue of the hard-hitting new series.
No sooner has Batman’s former sidekick, Jason Todd, put his past as the Red Hood behind him than he finds himself cornered by a pair of modern day outlaws: Green Arrow’s rejected sidekick Arsenal, the damaged soldier of fortune, and the alien Starfire, a former prisoner of intergalactic war who won’t be chained again. As a loner, Jason has absolutely no interest in this motley crew of outlaws. So what’s he going to do when they choose the Red Hood as their leader? Find out in this hot new series from writer Scott Lobdell (WILDC.A.T.S, Uncanny X-Men), featuring art by rising star Kenneth Rocafort (ACTION COMICS)! Geoff Johns has been charting the adventures of Hal Jordan and the GREEN LANTERN Corps since GREEN LANTERN: Rebirth, collaborating with such major artists as Ethan Van Sciver, Darwyn Cooke, Prentis Rollins, Marlo Alquiza and Mick Gray. In BATMAN AND ROBIN #1, the acclaimed creative team of Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason will explore the family dynamic of the Caped Crusader. Battling the Gotham underworld with his son, Damian, at his side in the role of Robin, Batman now realizes that the hardest part of the job may be trying to work together! As Batman and Robin try to adjust to their new partnership, a figure emerges from Bruce Wayne’s past: His name is NoBody, and he’s not happy that Batman Incorporated is shining a light on his own shadowy war against evil… Meet Catwoman. She’s addicted to the night. Addicted to shiny objects. Addicted to Batman. Most of all, Catwoman is addicted to danger. She’s good at being bad, and very bad at being good. She can’t help herself, and the truth is – she doesn’t want to. Find out more about what makes Catwoman tick in this new series from writer Judd Winick (BATMAN: UNDER THE HOOD) and artist Guillem March (GOTHAM CITY SIRENS)!
The Dark Knight struggles against a deadly – yet strangely familiar – foe in BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT. Superstar artist David Finch writes and draws a twisted adventure that pulls Bruce Wayne deep into the halls of the famed Arkham Asylum, a jail for Gotham City’s most dangerous and criminally deranged. Finch will team up with collaborator Jay Fabok on pencils. As a mysterious figure slinks through the halls of Arkham Asylum, Batman must fight his way through a gauntlet of psychos, and Bruce Wayne faces the unexpected legal ramifications of Batman Incorporated! Africa, a land of beauty – and of great horror. A land of creation and conflict. It is in desperate need of a defender, and from the ranks of Batman Incorporated comes a soldier to carry on the legacy of The Dark Knight in the most tumultuous region on Earth. Meet Batwing, the Batman of Africa! This September, join with us in this historic moment when the first black character to wear the Batman mantle will be the first to star in his own ongoing series. BATWING will be written by Judd Winick and illustrated by Ben Oliver. In the first BATMAN #1 since 1930, New York Times bestselling writer Scott Snyder (AMERICAN VAMPIRE, BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM) teams up with superstar artist Greg Capullo (Spawn) in his DC Comics debut! The start of a new era for The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne once again becomes the only character taking on the Batman name. A series of brutal killings hints at an ancient conspiracy, and Batman learns that Gotham City is deadlier than he knew. DC Comics’ flagship title is relaunched for the first time ever in DETECTIVE COMICS #1 by acclaimed writer/artist Tony Daniel. Marking the first time Batman will appear in a debut issue of Detective Comics, the series will find Bruce Wayne entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a dangerous serial killer known only as the Gotham Ripper.

I’m interested in the Green Lantern Books, but the rest of the Bat-Titles don’t have my attention. I MAY pick up #1 of a few just to figure out what the new continuity is – we’ll see if they can hook me – doubt it.

A few more of the 52 new #1 issues have been announced with covers yet to be revealed…

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1 – When deadly conflicts emerge across the universe, it’s up to Guy Gardner, John Stewart and an elite Green Lantern strike force to keep the peace. Written by Peter J. Tomasi with art by Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna. The cover to #1 is by Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy.
GREEN LANTERN: THE NEW GUARDIANS #1 - Who are The New Guardians? The power of Rage, Avarice, Fear, Will, Hope, Compassion and Love combine to be the most powerful (and colorful) team in the corps under the leadership of Kyle Rayner. Beware their power . . . and their volatility! Written by Tony Bedard and illustrated with cover by Tyler Kirkham and Batt.
RED LANTERNS #1 – Going solo. Atrocitus and his Red Lantern Corps return in their own series, battling against injustice in the most bloody ways imaginable. This Lantern Corps takes no prisoners, they are judge, jury and executioners!
BATMAN INCORPORATED #1 – Batman, Incorporated will continue through to Issue #10 and August’s shocking season finale that changes the Batman status quo yet again. The series returns next year with Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham and Batman: Leviathan, the epic 12 part conclusion to Morrison’s 6 year Batman saga.”

That makes 29 titles revealed. 23 of the 52 #1 issues have yet to be accounted for. What’s next? With all (or at least most) of the Bat and Lantern titles announced what does that leave – Superman Titles (Supeman, Action Comics, Supergirl, Superboy), the Legion main title and Legion Academy I hope!!!! How will this affect the Secret Six? Zatanna? Power Girl? Booster Gold? Will they all be getting #1 issues? Who makes the cut?

Batwoman Begins!

Batman #0 continues the adventures of Kate Kane – DC’s lesbian Batwoman (who debuted in in 2006′s “52” #7). This preview issue of the new ongoing series from J.H. Williams III and co-writer W. Haden Blackman shipped last week and is a jump on point introducing the character and her relationship to the rest of the Bat-family.

“I suspect that Batwoman is socialite Kate Kane. I intend to prove it beyond a shadow. I need to know if she can be trusted, what her motivations are. I’m going undercover.” – Batman: Mission Log Entry 2756

Things pick up roughly where the BATWOMAN: ELEGY HC left off, and this issue acts as a primer for the upcoming new series featuring multiple award-winning creators!

J.H. Williams III’s art is a thing of beauty and Amy Reeder who completed the art chores for the Kate Kane sequences isn’t bad either. Having J.H. draw the whole thing would have been preferable – but it works. I’m definitely looking forward to Batwoman #1 due in February 2011!

Batman and Robin #7 inches toward Bruce Wayne’s return

We knew Bruce Wayne wouldn’t stay “dead” long. But I thought it would be longer than this! In April we get the first issue of a 6 issue miniseries that will follow Bruce Wayne’s journey through time, back to the present-day Gotham City. Before that we’ll be getting clues from a variety of sources, including the new arc in Batman and Robin.

Knight, Squire and DETECTIVE COMICS’ Batwoman guest-star alongside The Dynamic Duo in “Blackest Knight,” a 3-part story illustrated by Cameron Stewart (SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICT0RY: MANHATTAN GUARDIAN). Readers who enjoyed BATMAN R.I.P. and FINAL CRISIS won’t want to miss this captivating new storyline packed with additional clues on the Domino Killer and the details surrounding the “death” of Bruce Wayne!

Batwoman vs Alice in Detective Comics #857

The hauntingly beautiful art of J.H. Williams III on Batwoman’s run in Detective Comics should be enough to draw you in. It was for me. Now I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on…

As promised, we’ve got a look at the Batwoman feature from DETECTIVE COMICS #857, as Batwoman faces off against Alice in an attempt to stop the villainess from unleashing a toxic death cloud over all of Gotham. But Alice has more up her sleeve than just poison, and Batwoman’s life will never ever be the same again. What more do you need? Oh, right. Artwork. Well, here you go. From the team of Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III, DETECTIVE COMICS #857 hits 9/23.

Detective #852: Elegy Part 3 – Affettuoso

OK, as someone who really liked the new Batwoman after her introduction and has been eagerly anticipating a place for her stories, I wanted to love this title, but right now it just is rating a solid “like.” J.H. Williams’ art deco flavored artwork is perfect to capture the haunted quality of Gotham City, but I’m finding the “Alice” part of the storyline as arcane as part 3′s title – Affettuoso – which is Italian for “affection”. I read the story but still don’t get the title.

Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams continue to put the pressure on Gotham’s newest hero with the third part of ‘Elegy,” as Batwoman unites with an unlikely ally to momentarily defeat the fairytale villain known as Alice.

I read the “Crime Bible” mini with Batwoman and the Question, but I remember the followers as human? Not sure who the purple tentacle guy and werewolf are. I’ll need to read up and then maybe I’ll like the next issue better.

A highlight this issue is the first meeting of 2 of the DCU’s most influential lesbians… Kate Kane, meet Maggie Sawyer. We know Kate likes cops. I hear music.

OFFICIAL NEWS: former Batgirl and Flamebird – Bette Kane will be attending “GU” (Gotham University I assume).

Justice League: A Cry for Justice – sneak peek

I’m really interested in seeing what Eisner Award-winning creator James Robinson (Starman) has in store for this oddly disparate group of heroes. I’m excited to see Batwoman making some connections in the DCU meta community, and overjoyed to see Mikaal Tomas back in the limelight again (I DO wonder how they will handle his alien bisexuality).

Driven by the deaths of Batman and Martian Manhunter during “Final Crisis,” Green Lantern and Green Arrow assemble a proactive Justice League including Supergirl, Batwoman, The Atom (Ray Palmer), Freddy Freeman, Congorilla and Starman (Mikaal Tomas). The team is poised to finally wipe the smiles of the faces of evil operating within the DC Universe. And Prometheus’ face is one of the evilest.

Originally announced as an ongoing series in March of 2008, the project became a mini-series in order to enable the author to work out a true ending for the story which features painted art and covers by The Trials of Shazam artist, Mauro Cascioli.

Justice League: A Cry for Justice

The line-up for this Green Lantern led spinnoff team of the Justice League due in July from the minds of writer James Robinson and artist Mauro Cascioli is already old news. But this art is the first glimpse of the art. With a lesbian (Batwoman) and a bisexual alien (Starman – Mikaal Thomas), this is the most GLBT inclusive team the JLA has ever seen.

The villains in the background look like shades of the bad ol’ Legion of Doom. This will be worth checking out, if only for the continuing drama of Black Canary‘s anguish at having Green Lantern start up his own team because the one she led was ineffectual. It wasn’t her fault – It’s not like she had advance warning that Evil Gods were planning Final Crisis. Hell we had advance warning and I still don’t know what the hell happened there.

Long touted Batwoman mini finally finds a home in Detective Comics

But it won’t be a miniseries anymore. Instead it will be a multi-issue arc of Detective Comics from Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III, starting in April’s #854.

I guess they decided to test Batwoman out in a long running title that completists will keep buying in order to get people more used to her. Might be a good move. Or at least better than a mini-series that could have low sales, sinking the character. Then again the whole lesbian angle usually plays well with fanboys.

Problem is straight fanboys don’t want to picture the sexy svelte Batwoman with the mannish fedora-wearing Question (talk about a butterface). Don’t get me wrong, I love Renee Montoya as the Question, but sexy? No. The whole faceless thing just doesn’t work unless there is a glory hole involved. I say introduce a sexy lesbain villainess to play Catwoman to Kate’s Batwoman and make it a triangle – THAT would sell a mini to the fanboys.

What do you think DC should do with Batwoman?

I’m looking forward to her having some pages to hopefully develop into more than a cardboard cut out. We really know very little about Kate Kane’s character. Lets hope the writers give her some.

TWO gay characters on new Justice League

Refresh my memory. Have we ever had a gay member of the JLA? (not just an ally or guest star, or someone whose sexuality is hinted at or sensationalized but a out proud card carrying member who dates). If so, please refresh my memory. But regardless, I bet there was never a team of 8 with TWO gay members! And we’ve got a lesbian in Batwoman and a bisexual with blue alien Starman, Mikaal Thomas. That 25% much better than that measly Kinsey 10% we’re usually given. Too bad they left that tidbit out of the CBR article… I wonder why? It seems significant detail to me.

James Dale Robinson's Justice League Lineup: Green lantern, Green Arrow, The Atom (Ray Palmer), Shazam (Freddy Freeman), Supergirl, Batwoman, Starman (openly gay blue alien Mikaal Thomas) and... Congorilla?

While talking with CBR, James Dale Robinson let slip a few details about plans for his “Justice League” series: Green Lantern will “slip out from under the shadow of the Trinity” to lead the team (about time, even Aquaman had his own lineup – and he just talks to fish), the disparate lineup will all come together naturally due to a course of events, not by some super powered triumvirate sorting through dossiers, and finally that this team will have a “purpose that was different from the Justice League of America.”

James Dale Robinson’s Justice League Lineup includes: Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Green Arrow, The Atom (Ray Palmer), Shazam (Freddy Freeman), Supergirl, Batwoman, Starman (Mikaal Thomas, former ally of Starmen Jack and Ted Knight) and last and least… Congorilla??? (A.K.A. ongo Bill – a seven-foot tall, 90 year old, magical golden gorilla with the intelligence and the sophistication of a big game hunter).

“Justice League” #1 will feature artwork by Mauro Cascioli (“The Trials of Shazam”), but has yet to be solicited. “I think we are waiting for Mauro to finish some more, so probably the end of the summer,” said Robinson. “But what’s he done so far, especially with his colors, is beautiful.”

I’m really curious what kind of event will bring these 8 due to a natural confluence of events…
