I originally created this as a welcome for our historical new president on election day, but I think it is equally appropriate today on his inauguration.
President Obama has the eyes of the world on him today and due to his previous crowd-pleasing addresses and the current perilous economic climate have many seem to have their emotional well-being riding on whether it is the speech is inspirational enough (many are hoping for something to eclipse the I have a dream speech). Obama’s speech was co-written by Jon Favreau (no not the one who was in Swingers and directed Iron Man).
Jon Favreau, 27, is, as Obama himself puts it, the president’s mind reader. He is the youngest chief speechwriter on record in the White House, and, despite such youth, was at the centre of discussions of the content of today’s speech, one which has so much riding on it.
Also have fun with the atom’s online inauguration speech generator and see if you can do better tha Jon Favreau! See my efforts under the video. I will be amending and bumping this post as President Obama’s week long inauguration party continues!
Openly gay Episcopal Bishop, Gene Robinson gives the invocation at the “We Are One” concert, which kicked off the inaugural ceremonies.
My fellow Americans, today is an historic day. You have shown the world that “hope” is not just another word for “insanity”, and that “change” is not only something we can believe in again, but something we can actually achieve.
Today we celebrate, but let there be no mistake – America faces dark and creepy challenges like never before. Our economy is wild. Americans can barely afford their mortgages, let alone have enough money left over for a yacht. Our healthcare system is dead. If your foot is sick and you don’t have insurance, you might as well call a manicurist. And America’s image overseas is tarnished like a antique toilet. But working together we can right this ship, and set a course for Hell and back.
Finally, I must thank my patient family, my rabid campaign volunteers, but most of all, I want to thank the homosexuals for making this historic occasion possible. Of course, I must also thank you, President Bush, for years of screwing the American people. Without your evil efforts, none of this would have been possible.

I don’t remember seeing George Bush or even Bill Clinton on that many covers as they were being sworn in. I’m always happy to see current reality and political commentary reflected in the comics worlds (as when George Bush’s election was mirrored by Lex Luthor’s). But these seem more akin to the Memorial Barack Obama collectible Victory plate I see advertised on TV… thoughts?
I haven’t read the Spiderman issue yet. I didn’t see it on shelves at my Comic Cook store, but then I didn’t see a line either so they were probably sold out already – I get the reprint or read someone elses – I don’t really follow Spidey that closely and Youngblood sucked the first time around (yeah, not a Liefeld fan, sue me) so not imagining the second time being all that brilliant.
Is it celebration or exploitation? Not that I have anything against exploitation – obviously. Almost half this site is dedicated to porn. But I occasionally will call it out when someone tries to disguise it.
And thanks to the Gay Comic Geek for mentioning the Spiderman cover in a comment, I never would have found the others if he hadn’t sent me alooking.
I really do love just about everything that I hear her say. Rachel Maddow is one smart funny politically savvy lady and I hope she enjoys the success she richly deserves. She really adds something to the collective voice of the “liberal media.” Not since Jon Stewart and the Daily Show have I seen a personality such an original and genial perspective speaking on my wavelength.
Here she is with her latest thoughts on Obama’s choice for the Inauguration invocation, Pastor Rick Warren. Warren, in addition to being a bible banging homophobe who has in the past compared homosexuality to incest and pedophilia (though he tries denying it in the video below, Rachel includes video of him saying it on camera). According to Rachel’s guest commenter, The Nation’s Katha Pollitt, Rick Warren not only compares women who have had an abortion to Nazi’s and pro-choice believers to holocaust deniers, but also believes spousal abuse is not grounds for divorce (he believes only abandonment and infidelity are valid reasons. This guy is just plain scary. I do not understand why Obama chose him.
Early tabulation of the popular vote resulted in Marvel Universe’s Daily Bugle prematurely calling the fictional Presidential election in the favor of Stephen Colbert, the bear-hating purveyor of “truthiness.” They even went as far as releasing the erroneous news on the front page.
New York City, November 5, 2008—The early results are in and the Daily Bugle is reporting that Stephen Colbert has won the United States Presidency in the Marvel Universe. While many states still have yet to report their numbers, Colbert is already claiming a victory.
But Colbert loving Marvelites will be disapointed to learn that in fact Stephen Colbert was defeated due to a lack of Electoral votes, meaning Barack Obama is President of the Marvel Universe’s United States as well as in our reality. I’m really glad that Obama won there too, (Might as well make comic book history as well as real history) but if was going to be anyone else, I would have wanted Stephen Colbert in every story about the President for the next 4 years,

Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich is the black-hearted tyrannical despot of her own front porch, but little else. She turned the revered seasonal holiday of Halloween into a political sideshow by refusing to offer candy to trick-or-treating children of Obama supporters. Going as far as turning away crying children, all she did was make herself and by association, her candidate, seem petty and small-minded. Stupid AND mean… she’s a catch fellas. Lets hear it for Mr. Nagel. His life must suck.
Lets hope her house is egged weekly for the next 4 years…

SNL brought the funny again last night with their 2nd of 3 Thursday night pre-election political specials. Not as funny as last week though. Really? Oh my god are you serious? remains hard to top.
The guys and gals at SNL have brought their political A game once again. Why can’t their regular sketches be this funny!!! I would LOVE to see a weekly weekend update in primetime. But to make that possible someone must clone Tina Fey. Anyone have a petrie dish and some of her DNA?
IDW Publishing has provided ComicBookResources previews of their thoroughly researched comic book biographies of the two leading candidates for President of the United States, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. “Presidential Material: Barack Obama” and “Presidential Material: John McCain” will be on sale October 8.
Barack Obama’s biography comes courtesy of writer Jeff Mariotte (“Angel: Old Friends”) and artist Tom Morgan. John McCain’s is written by comics veteran Andy Helfer — who’s also written biographies of Malcom X and Ronald Regan — with artwork by Stephen Thompson (“Star Trek: New Frontier”). Cover artwork is provided by comics superstar J. Scott Campbell.
Senator Obama appeared opposite the always fair and balanced Bill O’Reilly on Thursday’s O’Reilly Factor.
In case you missed it while you were buying three cases of beer to prepare for your “How Many Times Can Republicans Say the Word ‘Maverick’?” drinking game last night, here is the clip

I’ll add more here as I find them so check this post again if interested. This one goes out to popapathy who may be apathetic about pop culture but makes me want to find out about about everything else.
Suggest anyone who gave a speech that moved you and I’ll try to find it and add it here.

How would Republicans like THIS as the cover to the National Review… methinks not much. In case you missed the satirical New Yorker cover that started all this brouhaha… click here.
FOX must stop injecting racism, prejudice, and fear into our political dialogue. We intend to hold FOX, its advertisers, and its personalities accountable for FOX’s attempts to smear the Obamas.
I am so sick of the sneaky underhanded way FOX News casually mentions some negative aspect or concept in the same breath of someone they want to smear. They have an audience of lemmings (I know they don’t really jump over cliffs, but the idiom is ingrained in the public lexicon by now, bit I digress…). Their audience is full of empty minds who soak up their bullshit like a smelly sponge. They call a presidential candidate’s wife his “baby momma,” cast what they THINK are aspersions on his religion (the M-word ooooh I’m scared) and practically call him a terrorist for not using the suburban hi-5.

Susan Sarandon, Hally Berry, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Sydney Poitier, Morgan Freeman and Ben Afleck are named as celebrity Barack Obama supporters, but all they can muster for McCain is Stephen Baldwin. Thats a bit sad. And this is FOX News, so you know they want McCain to look good. This is them trying.
I love the part at the end where he says “most stupidest”.
