Ms. Marvel no more… During Marvel’s House of M, we met a Carol Danvers who had become Earth’s Greatest Hero… Captain Marvel. When she got back, (and started her semi-recent 50 issue series) Carol felt like an underachiever in comparison to her alternate self and decided it was about time she lived up to her potential. She had 50 issues (which included her “death” and return), and never really got there, but is not giving up on the idea.
She IS giving up much of the sex appeal that the character’s costumes have always embraced. The new ongoing Captain Marvel series (by New York Times best-selling writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy) starring Carol was announced at Wondercon 2012. Teaser images show us a strong determined heroine wearing WAY more clothing than she’s used to.
Personally I don’t mind MOST of the costume (they kept her sash belt and a color reverse of the v shape mantle found in her original costume) but I hate the mask seen in the panel page and would have kept her signature thigh high boots and exposed upper thighs (but given her less of a thong look than we saw in the recent Ms. Marvel run). No matter how cool the costume is, it will be hard to top the 2 fan favorite costumes she’s already worn. The new costume has a distinct patriotic/militaristic look that is appropriate for Carol’s background and aspirations, but I think it’s just too generic. What do you think? Is this Carol outgrowing her lifelong cheesecake phase and stepping up to the Major Leagues as she’s always wanted (and deserved)? Or are they taking a character with an identity and beloved iconic look of her own and making her the new Phyla-Vell instead? Wait cancel that, even Phlya’s costume was sexier.

Those of you who have been following gay geek subjects for awhile have undoubtedly come across the supersexy superheroes of James Cesena, creator/artist/owner of The iMiJ Factory, which he created in 2001 as a focus for his artistic endeavors. The name is a combination his childhood nickname (Jimi) spelled backwards (which sounds like “image”) and an affection for Andy Warhol’s "The Factory." James thought it to be the perfect imprint for his hot photo-manipulated pin-ups of famous male heroes (and hunky genderbent versions of superheroines).
In late 2002, James came across a website called Comics2Film (which has since been absorbed). At the time, they featured (quite prominently on their home page) a photo manipulation gallery. Blown away by the fantastic images, the budding graphic designer / full fledged comic geek, decided to take a shot at the new art form.
One of the goals was to have your manip featured on their front page, which The iMiJ Factory achieved several times. Response to the work was incredible and James received messages from people all over the world (from Japan to Australia and everywhere in between) thanking him for sharing his “iMiJ’s” with them.
It was around that time that James discovered peer groups of gay comic fans and artists through a number of online outlets… the original Facebook, Yahoo Groups, The GLA (The Gay League of America) and their spin-off group called GLAFiles where photo manip artists could post their sexy gay-themed images.
The requests for The iMiJ Factory to do nude heroes was building, so he explored the sexier side of super heroes under the banner "The BLUE iMiJ," becoming a regular poster to GLAFiles as well as to Gay Superheroes and the now defunct "Fantasy Images of Men" group. When asked why he doesn’t do more graphic scenes, James explains that the portraits he creates are meant to convey what is sexy about the subject. If he finds a photo that captures the essence of a character he has in mind, clothed or not, then he builds on that. In his opinion, his most successful photo manips aren’t always nudes, but a photo that already exudes a certain sexiness.
Through these sites and groups, "The BLUE iMiJ" made quite a few close friends and contacts with the many talented and inspirational artists in those groups. Over the course of a year, his fanbase, as well as the volume of his collection of “iMiJ’s” grew to the point that he created his own Yahoo Group, The iMiJ Nexus (Archived HERE).
His own website The iMiJ Factory launched shortly thereafter, in order for him to concentrate more on his other artistic ventures – including commissioned hand drawn or photomanipulated portraits of custom heroes (creating a client likeness, or using original client provided images). Perhaps too much of his time is taken up by his regular job in the retail management arena, but he still creates manips whenever he can and is always looking for requests and commissions. James live in Palm Springs, CA with his partner, Tim, and Katya, their Snowshoe/Siamese mix.
I’ve identified as many of the source models as I can. The artist helped with most and I was able to spot a few on my own (including one time Jeff Stryker bottom Steve Hammond as Elongated Man), but between us we still left a majority of these pretty faces unknown. As Rupaul Drag Race Season 4′s self-appointed “mean girl” Willem Belli lunched with Detox and Vicky Vox at Chick-Fil-A, the ladies discussed the christian-owned restaurant’s recent sponsorship of 2 antigay “marriage conferences.”
Willem was only mildly annoyed by the news until he realized the food gave him the runs (and we’re not talking about his stockings), prompting him to exact revenge with… this entertaining musical endorsement.
According to Willem “If drag queens endorse Christian-right owned Chick-fil-A, is it still an endorsement? NOPE. The worst endorsement for a Christian chicken eatery is three drag queens.” I think Willem may have a point. If Chick-Fil-A is always chock full ‘o’ drag queens, I bet the usual Christian clientele may just start to fill their hateful pieholes at KFC. Lets stage a WIG-IN!
DESPITE my misgivings about the “finale” I’m thrilled Wiccan and Hulking FINALLY kissed on panel.
I loved issues 1-8 of the overly drawn-out maxiseries. So I was NOT ready for this final issue of Avengers: The Children’s Crusade. I’ve come to expect more of Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, but nothing happened, at least nothing good. As we saw last issue, Stature died. This issue, they argue, the “young” Vision is demolished (IMO to make room for the recently reconstructed “old” Vision) and then everyone just decides to let their friends stay dead. Its OK to save Scott Lang with the timestream but not Cassie?
The big climax that sets the stage big time for what is to come in 2012! Deaths and departures! The funeral of an Avenger. The final fate of the Scarlet Witch. Plus, a new lineup and direction for the Young Avengers.
Aside from that the Young Avengers all decide that its all their fault and they should disband and quit heroing. Wiccan mopes around through 3 recent major Marvel events (Spider-Island, Schism, and the Human Torch’s return) in a one page montage and then we get a reunion in the following final four pages – which does include a backhanded proposal and the 1st on-panel Hulkling/Wiccan kiss for which we’ve all been hoping since the boyfriends were introduced back in 2005… but it just feels like we are being thrown a bone at the end of a bad finale to follow through on the more prevalent early issue mentions of the relationship (that dwindled significantly late in the series.
To be fair I’m including a review from the always adorable GayComicGeek. I loved the series and really expected more of a finale. This felt like an epilogue.
Since this is the last issue of a bi monthly 9 issue series we spent MORE THAN 18 months following, I doubt anyone is going to skip it just because I’ve included the above four pages, which include the big gay moment and some sentimental words of encouragement from Captain America that they are “all Avengers.” This doesn’t bode particularly well for those of us hoping that a regular Young Avengers title would soon be added to the schedule. I think this is just timed so a few of the kids can pop up on rosters during AVX. The so called “new roster” mentioned in the tease is nowhere to be found unless that final shot (sans Patriot) that includes Captain America, Spider-Man and Ant-Man is meant to foreshadow something?
Although the constantly lame come-ons to his female Avengers Academy teammates were definitely an act to cover his sexual confusion, Striker’s fame-whorishness was apparently the real Brandon Sharpe showing through. After his somewhat heartfelt exchange with Lightspeed in Issue #23, Striker takes advantage of the first free moment he’s had since to whip together a press conference Coming Out announcement with the help of Mom/Agent.
The Runaways are here! Giant-Man and Victor, Reptil and Chase, Lightspeed and Karolina. What happens when these two super-charged teams collide?
Love the bit with Mom about starting a rumor he’s “dating the kid from GLEE. No. The hot one.” I’m picturing Striker in costume next to a 4 color version of Blaine’s highwater pants and bow ties. It’s not working. But the romantic rainbow connection of Julie Power and Karolina Dean??? Now that’s a match made to… get REAL serious before being interrupted by the return of Karolina’s long lost allegedly late wife/husband, Xavin.
I think there will definitely be some story follow up to this very public Coming Out. What will the reaction of the rest of the Marvel Universe be? Is Avengers Academy about to see a picket from a fictionalized version of the Phelps clan?
Has anyone told the 1000s of women who can’t count (Million Moms) to add this title to the list of things to bully companies over? You know, so they have something to do once they finish harassing JC Penny over Ellen, protesting tiny grooms on cakes in Macy’s ads and threatening toy stores over an issue they carried TWO months ago.
By the way no major LGBT drama on the letters page this issue aside from some thanks n praise and predictions of the potential in the Power/Dean combo.
For those wondering where the HELL I’ve been lately… I’ve been busy on my hands and knees digging into every single nook and cranny in this apartment and yanking out stack after stack of comics in order to sort them ALL into piles (by title) and then put in chronological order. After I cleared my favorite local comic shop (Whatever in the Castro) out of comic long boxes (someone else had recently bought a bunch so I was only able to get 11), I bagged n boarded 3300 books (mostly misc. X-Tltles, Justice-related, Vertigo titles and some girl power stuff like She-Hulk and Wonder Woman) and then restowed the rest. At least when more boxes arrive I only have to pull out smaller sections now that its all sorted.
I plan to try to fill 1 long box (300 books) per week until the project is done and then I want to see about finding a buyer for the whole lot. If any of you knows anyone interested in buying a large collection of primarily Marvel and DC ranging from the original early 80s Dark Phoenix saga until the recent DCNew reboot, let me know. I’m planning a move later this year and as much as I enjoy my comics, I don’t need to move 30 years of comics. I’d also appreciate any suggestions on getting modern bags n boards cheap – so speak up if you have any ideas.

Now that Striker is OUT and PROUD, we’re starting to hear the fallout from the religious right. I’m not surprised. With all the amazing leaps forward in the inclusion of LGBT characters in popular culture (comics especially of course), it’s inevitable that the usual suspects get their devoted Christian panties in a bunch about it. Issue #26 of Avengers Academy, Stryker’s sexuality is a 2 panel bit in an all-story no action character piece leading up to a crossroads moment. But the letters page is devoted to a well spoken, albeit ignorant ill-informed letter from a Mr. Jerry Smith of Erlanger Kentucky and a fantastic response from Writer Christos Gage.
Among other things Mr. Smith suggests Mr. Gage’s compassion would be better served by volunteering for a hotline or donating to an organization that helps kids with coming out. Jerry just doesn’t get it. What Mr. Gage is doing will help prevent the need for the hotlines in the first place. LGBT youth don’t all call hotlines when they should. Some keep their pain and misery inside until it becomes too much to bear. Revealing Stryker’s “alternate sexual lifestyle” and complicated history doesn’t just add ANOTHER gay character to the Marvel U. It lets LGBT kids out there see themselves mirrored in the pages of their favorite book and exposes straight readers to “what that gay kid they keep teasing at school” might be going through. It may even make future generations more likely to stand up for that kid being picked on… or even empower bullied kids to stand up for themselves.
Mr. Smith’s arguments and analogies all fall a bit short of their mark and are easily swatted by Gage’s rebuttal. Smith compares having a gay character in a “TEEN” rated superhero book about minors to “giving Little Orphan Annie AIDS.” While I get his point I think its off base in that Avengers Academy is not intended for ALL AGES the same way Lil Orphan Annie is. Now if the writers of Tiny Titans introduce Lil gay Bunker he’ll have a point. Until then, I agree with Christos Gage in saying that I’d put money down that Mr. Jerry Smith of Erlanger Kentucky has a problem with Homosexuality itself and not just with it’s inclusion in Avengers Academy. Gage also points out a number of characters in the Marvel U with strong religious beliefs as well as disproves Smith’s uninformed allegation that hetero romance (kissing) is rare in comics.
Only those with a “faith-based” disdain for Homosexuality see this sort of progress as a Political agenda. WE thanks Cristos Gage for his work on Striker and his letters page comments about the issues raised by the story. Read a copy of the letters page and an article about it here.
Openly gay (at least officially out since 2006, but known to insiders) actor, singer, director, and magician Neil Patrick Harris (or NPH as he is affectionately abbreviated) has been a household name since he charmed his way into the hearts of America as Doogie Hauser MD, the fresh-faced, slightly awkward 16-year-old doctor with a genius intellect, an eidetic memory and the problems of an ordinary teenager on top of those of a Resident Surgeon at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles.
NPH was born June 15, 1973 in Albuquerque, NM. He became a professional child actor after being discovered at Drama Camp and was soon cast opposite Whoopi Goldberg in the 1988 drama "Clara’s Heart" (which won him his first Golden Globe nomination). In 1989, at the age of 16 (a teen playing a teen for a change) he took on the role of Doogie. Neil graduated from Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School an Honors student in 1991, 2 years into the show’s 4 seasons.
Riding Doogie’s popularity and his own talent and likability, NPH made a number of guest appearances on many of the most popular TV shows of the 90s and early 2000s (Blossom, The Simpsons, Roseanne, Quantum Leap, Murder She Wrote, The Outer Limits, Will & Grace, Law & Order, N3mbers, GLEE (for which he won a 2010 Emmy). In 2005 he again became a regular staple in America’s weekly TV diet as the roguish ladies man with a suit fetish, Barney Stintson on "How I Met Your Mother."
He’s brought to life a number of animated characters for movies, TV and even video games… ranging from villains on Justice League (Ray Thompson – Legends Parts 1 & 2), Batman The Brave and the Bold (The Music Meister), and heroes in the animated features Justice League: The New Frontier (Barry Allen/The Flash), Batman: Under The Red Hood (Dick Grayson) and voiced Peter Parker in all 13 episodes of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and the 2010 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions video game.
Although he also made a slew of TV movies too, NPH’s post Doogie career has NOT been limited to the TV screen. He had roles on Starship Troopers, The Next Best Thing, Undercover Brother, Beastly and The Smurfs, but is perhaps best known in movie theaters for playing a wildly fictionalized, hooker-branding, unicorn riding version of himself in the Harold and Kumar series. Another feather in his already well-populated cap was the starring role in Joss Whedon’s cult 2008 mid- writer’s strike web series Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog (a personal favorite of mine).
Neil Patrick Harris began his serious stage acting career with a 1997 stint as Mark Cohen in the rock musical RENT and since has performed on Broadway and in many famous theatres in shows such as Romeo and Juliet, Sweeny Todd, Proof, Caberet (during which he met partner David Burtka), Assassins and Company, and even directed a 2010 production of RENT at the Hollywood Bowl. An avid performer and fan of theatrical magic, Neil Patrick Harris serves on the Board of Directors of Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
Neil Patrick Harris began dating David Burtka in 2004 (according to an Ellen interview). I was never a HUGE Archie fan growing up, but I read some. As a kid I remember reading the digest collections of Archie and Richie Rich before i graduated to the X-Men and “New” Teen Titans. So GLAAD nominee Kevin Keller’s debut was the first time I’d touched an Archie comic in decades. I’ve picked up all the Kevin Keller issues in solidarity and will continue to do so. Although it is very much a comic for kids, it really touches me to think of a whole generation of LGBT kids can pick this off the comic rack. THANK YOU DAN PARENT for creating Kevin Keller! And thanks Archie Comics and readers fro embracing him.

It is hard to believe that gays in comics have come so far that not only can we have an out and proud young gay man attending fictional Riverdale High, but also he is popular enough to warrant his own series… and the first issue is all about him worried about his first date. I know the world of Archie is an innocuous one. It’s safe, and it should be. Its for kids. So I’m not expecting Kev to get much real action despite being quite a catch (handsome, smart & brave).
Even without the hope of a “very special” issue where Kevin Keller loses it (which would of course herald Riverdale going to Hell in a handbasket anyway – so it is a story arc better avoided), the chronicling of his ordinary daily life, his friendships and flirtations (g-rated tho they may be) is such a major step forward for LGBT inclusion AND goes beyond that to true representation… something I couldn’t even imagine as a teen. So Kevin Keller is staying on my unfortunately short list of regular purchases. At least til gets his first kiss, than I’ll see what other stories Mr. Parent has to tell.

Chronicle is the first movie of 2012 that I’ve eagerly anticipated. I could tell from the dark disturbing trailer that I would enjoy it, but was genuinely surprised at what a thrill ride it really is. I was utterly enthralled.
The downward spiral that is a Dark Phoenix-like descent into violent madness generally doesn’t end well. So the journey of poor, troubled Andrew wasn’t unexpected. In fact it is foreshadowed from the opening scene on. Despite that, Chronicle is a gripping tale of what might happen if real people got superhuman powers. Fans of the New Warriors may spot parallels between Andrew and Vance Astro a.k.a. Justice (physically and emotionally abused telekinetic teen who struck back at the source of his pain) or Carrie for that matter. If Stephen King’s Carrie had friends with the same mental abilities? Would she have gone quite as ballistic?
I don’t want to give more away than the trailers, so I’ll only say I hope the final monologue means there may be more to come in the story. A lot remains unanswered (and unasked). What was that object that empowered the boys? Had anyone else ever found it?
The burgeoning DCnU reromance between The Midnighter and Apollo is starting to heat up. This exchange between the two tells us we can expect open flirtation during their hopefully prolonged courtship. I wonder how long it will take for them to tie the knot and adopt Jenny Quantum (Midnighter is already acting parental)?
