Even though Heroes has been officially canceled (though creator Tim King still sounds hopeful), there is still hope for the superhero genre in prime time…
NBC’s The Cape is the story of a cop framed for murder who becomes a masked crusader to clear his name.
ABC’s No Ordinary Family centers around an ordinary family suddenly gifted with super powers such as Invulnerability, Super Speed, Super Strength, Super Jumping and more. Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz star as the super parents. But the show is up against GLEE so It may flounder.
Also due is a CW teen horror show about 3 teens who discover they are “changelings” and have magical powers. Roswell anyone?
So if you appreciate all the work I do on this blog AND you are a fan of any of the above, PLEASE stop by the Animated Heroes section and see the best current and classic Superhero Animation available on DVD.
Now I wish THIS had been the Teen Titans cartoon series. I hated that anime travesty. This looks a lot more like what I wanted for DC’s legacy teens… something that has more in common with Justice League Unlimited than Pokemon. YOUNG JUSTICE is an all-new series from DC Entertainment and produced by Warner Bros. Animation.
In YOUNG JUSTICE, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over – to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets?
Are you ready to come of age in such a world? Are you ready for life or death rites of passage? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League?
They list Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis (a reimagined Arrowette? or is it Wonder Girl Cassie Sandsmark? I think the former) as the members of Young Justice. So who’s the guy in the lower right corner? Is that Soul Man Aqualad? Why is he the most prominently featured? He looks like the affirmative action character Spyke that Marvel added to that X-Men series a few years back. If they want to be more multicultural why not include Cyborg? or Thunder? or Lightning? (from Outsiders and JSA) OR Static? Will we see other Young Justice allies like Secret, Empress or L’il Lobo?
Not really loving the cargo pants on Conner, but I generally like the look of the rest.
Superhero is The first official music video from new band TimAndTheSpaceCadets. It’s a bit bubble gum for me but it IS adorable. For videos, pictures, music, and lots more, be sure to check out their website… TimAndTheSpaceCadets.com
Plus “Tim” is kinda cute too. Great blue eyes. Possible retouched, but great.
As usual – his review is right on the money. GayComicGeek consistently has great reviews of comics, books, shows and movies that interest me. So OF COURSE he’s put up his opinion on Smallville: Absolute Justice…
I’m SO EXCITED!!!! I’m trying to explain the historical significance of the Justice Society of America’s first Primetime appearance to Popapathy but don’t think he’s feeling my joy.
A bit surprised Clark never thought to ask why they all looked so young. I’m hoping that Geoff Johns is grooming JSA to be Smallville’s spinoff successor. But if he is, the costumes need work. Stargirl looked OK, but how hard is it to design a belly shirt and hot pants. I stick by my original assertion that Hawkman should have been played by someone who was more believable as a mace-wielding barbarian. The ab covering harness looked ridiculous with Shanks’ (nice for an ordinary human but far from the Hawkman we are accustomed to) arms coming out of it. Dr Fate looked like he was wearing football pads under his blue spandex. Either cast actors who have the physique to fill the costume or hire better costume designers.
BUT enough negativity… costumes aside I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the 2 hour special episode. I hadn’t realized Checkmate was part of it until I read the on demand episode synopsis. Pam Grier as Amanda Waller is sheer brilliance and it looks like we’ve not seen the last of her… or hopefully the JSA. FINGERS CROSSED! WE LOVE YOU GEOFF JOHNS!
Smallville Absolute Justice airs on the CW for 210 days
The highlight of the last season of Smallville was the Legion of Superheroes episode written by Geoff Johns. So of course I was overjoyed to hear that he was bringing the superteam he made great again to the small screen – The legendary Justice Society!!!! Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl are the announced guest stars, but I’d expect a few more easter eggs for the fanboys in the viewing audience. Absolute Justice is a special 2 hour Smallville event so be sure to tune or set your VCR, Tivo or whatever on Friday, February 5th at 8pm! Not to be missed. THERE WILL BE A TEST.
I’m not sure how I feel about the casting of Michael Shanks as Hawkman – I loved his character on Stargate, but he does not have the body of a mace-wielding winged barbarian. Carter Hall may be an archeologist by trade, but he looked more like a mercenary. Maybe I’ll feel differently when I see the episode, but from the look of Shank’s arms in the costume, I doubt it.
Its a brand new year and about time for all the shows to come back from their mid-winter break. Monday night brought us a special 2-hour episode of Heroes…
Did the dreadlocked carny FIX Hiro’s tumor or just give him a wicked case of word salad? I love his scrambled fanboy speech and found myself saying “that’s where the X-Men train” at the exact same time as Ando which amused Popapathy to no end. Here are the geekboy references I caught so far… Don Quixote, Star Wars, Highlander, Battlestar Galactica, Camelot, Batman, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, X-Men and Spider-Man. Did I miss any?
How does Samuel know so much about the powers of deaf Dazzler/Venus? Either HRG must have bagged and tagged her at some point in the past and cataloged her abilities before Haitianing her, or Samuel’s met someone like her before. The former seems more likely.
But what exactly does he have planned? A lovely green homeland for the super powered carnies in an of itself isn’t a danger? or is it? Considering the events happening right now in Marvels’ The Siege, maybe creating a maintain fortress for a colony of powerful beings might not go over well with the Government. Also considering Samuel killed a partyful of rich folks just for kicks, what kind of collateral damage might he create in making his paradise?
His family finally gets to say farewell to Nathan Petrelli. We’ve been so busy watching Sylar running around with his face that there was no time to mourn Nathan’s passing. Umm they couldn’t spring the extra $$$ to have his wife (Rena Sofer) and children show up at the funeral? Instead they have some stand in with dark hair in the background at the wake.
What is it with insane earth movers? Samuel’s power FX are put to good use here. I shudder to think what he could do to a populated area if he chose. Even big bad Sylar was taken out pretty fast (a little too fast – there should have been an X-Men-3 wolverine-struggling-through-the-fire-moment). It looks like although Nathan may be gone, some of him remains in Sylar who is having a hard time getting his index finger up enough to kill. I have to admit I’m positively atingle at the thought of Sylar all tatted up like Lydia, her ability will be a nice addition, glad she didn’t have to die for it. Thought she was a goner when she called him impotent. But isn’t it interesting that what he wants/needs is Clair?
And c’mon how much would have had to pay West to fly in for a cameo instead of just suggesting he came by off camera.
Interesting preview… our deaf dazzling siren seems to be riding a carnival ride with her cello and crazy eyes like she’s gonna play a tune and go boom. Hope Peter can save her!
If you are 1/2 the Geoff Johns fan that I am you are waiting on pins and needles for the January episode of Smallville entitled “Society.” Johns gave fans the following tidbits via Twitter…
Yes, Hawkman will have wings. And a big mace. Oh. And he and Green Arrow don’t get along. At all.
Michael Shanks just cannot get away from Egyptian symbology as he’s stepped away from the Stargate but into the harness of Hawkman, whose origin is deeply rooted in ancient Egypt. The actor playing Doctor Fate is another Stargate refugee… Brent Strait. The presence of Britt Irvin as Stargirl threw me – I was thinking abut the predecessors of the JLA in a mentoring role to Clark, not so much the modern legacy JSA members. I wonder if any of the other new blood will show up?
I LOVED last season’s Legion episode. I would be overjoyed to see a spin-off from either that episode or this upcoming “Society.” I think both are rife with possibilities. Especially if they involve the mind of Geoff Johns. My only fear is him becoming a bigtime writer for TV and not having time for the red-headed bastard stepchild that is the comics industry. I’m talking to YOU Heinberg!
Watching now! So Lois is back from the future… but who is this bitch in black after her? Oh Oh she has heat vision! A brunette Andromeda a.k.a. Laurel Gand? can’t be Laurel Kent – she only has invulnerability. Hmm neither – she’s one of Zod’s.
COOL! Clark wears the S Shield! I saw preview photos but still a cool moment. Though I preferred the moment from the first issue of Geoff Johns Superman: Secret Origin – his mother making the costume and him being embarrassed to wear it was priceless. They should REALLY let him loose on Smallville for more than just the one episode (JSA!!!!) that he is penning this season. Or better yet a new movie OR TRILOGY! But I digress and the commercial is almost over…
Does Chloe not know her cousin Lois at ALL??? She fell for the old “I need a sedative” bit?
Ok who else is considering kneeling before Zod? Tess might take a shot at it if he gets past her “obstinate” side.
Brian Austin Green is part of the cast now? Metropolis’ kissing bandit? What’s that about? Hmm John Corben? a.k.a. Metallo!!!
The clocktower set is shaping up nicely.
They are following Smallville with America’s Top Model? I hope that isn’t a choice for the season. Is something else premiering soon? If not no worries – then I can turn to Medium!
What I don’t get is why did Lois come back from 1 YEAR in the future, shouldn’t it have taken her to the Legion’s era?
Oliver Queen ULTIMATE FIGHTER!
here is a recap of last season for those who missed some of it…
I loves me some NPH, and he does not disappoint as the melodically mind controlling Music Meister! OK I’m a proven sucker for musical episodes (I LOVED the Buffy TVS episode Once More With Feeling and the Scrubs musical and am eagerly anticipating the musical episode of Eureka next season). And I’m a HUGE comic book geek so I really couldn’t be more the target audience for a musical episode of The Brave and the Bold. Guest Starring Black Canary, Aquaman and Green Arrow.
Neil Patrick Harris sounds amazing as ever (check him out in Prop 8 the Musical)
As I regale you with my story you know you’ll have no choice but to do my evil bidding when you hear this booming voice!”
– Music Meister (Neil Patrick Harris)
and these are audio only – but they have the songs…
I know many parts of Heroes Seasons 2-3 kinda or really sucked. But still, I just so love seeing comic book drama on the small screen. Thoroughly enjoyed the ripoff of Exiles fate of Morph/Proteus in making Sylar think he’s Nathan. I can’t wait to see what the story is. Popapathy is here and we’re gonna watch the season 3 finale and then pop some champagne and kick back for the premiere. PLEASE feel free to discuss the episode as it happens but I probably won’t comment until afterward.
Tune in Tonight at 8 – 7 Central!
UPDATE: OK I watched it. I may not be as tough a critic as some. I know a few people who absolutely HATED last season and although I had some problems with it (I hate plotholes big enough to drive a truck through) but all-in-all I still enjoyed the ride.
Tonight’s Premiere seems like a good place to start. We have a mysterious carnival of powered individuals who have been hiding in plain sight, fending for themselves as a traveling carnival until their old leader died. Past ties connect them with Hiro and they are seeking out Syler, Clair and Peter… but why?
My only real WTF moment was after HRG’s first altercation with Tracy in his car. He and Danko hav that long conversation and THEN it occurs to him to check where the water was draining?
LOVING the mental games with Sylar in Matt’s head and “Nathan” confused by his powers calling Peter for help. Good setup. No real WOW OMG moments though.
I don’t trust Claire’s new best friend. She’s seemed a bit eager to investigate the “murder.” I think she has an agenda and suggested the investigation as a way to bond, and also perhaps as a way to coax Claire into jumping out that window so she could “accidentally” catch Clair and force an explanation – drawing them closer.
This video probably won’t stay up long – but I will replace with the official one once it is out. So enjoy for now!
I KNOW last season left us little to anticipate (aside from Syler/Nathan – I love that twist). I know the straight fanboys are salivating over the lesbian cheerleader aspect, but this freakshow angle has potential. And I have to admit I’m hopeful that Volume Five: Redemption will do it’s damnedest to be everything that Fugitives and Villains were not.
I believe this is the trailer shown at Comicon – can anyone who was there verify before it gets removed? – and speaking of SDCC… – ANYONE KNOW SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP ME FIND A GLEEK!?!?!?!?! I work hard to supply my peers with the latest in smut and comics news – so the least someone could do is hook me up with a plastic space monkey (happy to pay cost plus a something for trouble – but the $100 price tag on ebay is a bit much)
The Heroes cast had a lot to say about Heroes Volume 5: Redemption at this years SDCC 2009 Heroes panel…
Looks like this season has everything… Nathan/Sylar’s identity crisis, super powered carnivals with Prison Break’s and Carnivale’s Robert Kneper as its mysterious ringleader, titillating lesbian freshmen, an empath with prophetic morphing tattoos, British actor/stuntman Ray Park (Darth Maul and X-Men’s Toad) as a knife thrower with super speed, LOTS MORE TIME TRAVEL and Swoosie Kurtz out for vengeance!
Kring then explained that when this season premieres September 21, the government is no longer after our heroes and are content to let them live ordinary lives. Of course, the question is, what does ordinary look like when you’ve got powers? Kring promised the show would move quickly this season, and added that all the clips seen in the trailer were just taken from the first three episodes.
The series creator said there would be a “new wrinkle” this season. “Alongside the show that you’ve been watching all this time, it seems there was this other group – this family of people who have powers and had figured out how to live alongside of us and hide in plain sight,” he said. And what better place to hide than in a carnival, which is one of the main settings in Volume 5.
I doubt this will be up long – but I’ll replace it with the official trailer once it hits the net.
The end of Volume Four: Fugitives left a few interesting sub-plots – the biggest of which is the fact that Nathan Petrelli was killed and then Sylar was made to think he ACTUALLY WAS Nathan and he shapechanged into him.
Lets hope they can avoid some of the pitfalls of volumes 2-4 and recapture the momentum and freshness of season one while still managing to surprise and entertain without leaving gaping holes in the plot (how DID Hiro get to India and back if he couldn’t teleport and was a wanted fugitive?).
At this year’s SDCCSmallville panel it was revealed that Johns would be bringing another super team that is close to his heart into the Smallville mythos – The Justice Society of America (which he almost single-handedly made relevant when he wrote “JSA” from 1999-2006 and followed it up with “Justice Society of America”).
When approached shortly after the ninth season was commissioned by the network to see if he was interested in writing a JSA episode, his answer was “yes,” with one caveat… He said “Yes. I‘d be interested, if I could bring another DC property that’s never been brought to live action, to live action.” Hmmmm what do you think he wants to work on? I hope he’s thinking Spin-off, Smallville can’t last forever.
There is no official airdate for the episode yet, but Johns speculated it would air about the same time (mid-January) as the Legion episode.
Those with a high TVQ might remember the 1992 TV adaption of the starring Rick Springfield as Christopher Chance. It only lasted 7 episodes, lets hope Mark can beat that.
The Human Target was created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino in 1972, first appearing in Action Comics 419. Private detective and bodyguard, Christopher Chance makes a target of himself by impersonating clients in peril.
The new season of South Park is damned funny as usual. This week it was super as well. I love it that South Park Studios has every episode from all 13 seasons available to watch online. They won’t let me embed the whole thing, just clips, but you can Watch the full episode HERE! All in all a fantastic follow up to the evil Micky Mouse/Jonas Brothers/purity ring episode. I cannot wait to see what they’ll do next.
It is Dark Knight and Watchmen meet South Park in the latest episode starring mystery hero Mysterion and Eric Cartman as The Coon (which is short for Racoon becasue Cartman is digging out the trash from the city’s underbelly – he remains blissfully unaware of the slur). What madness ensues when a lone hero set out to save his city is suddenly overshadowed by the spotlight on his competition? With special villainous appearances by Professor Chaos and General Disarray.
“The word Faggot is Insensitive to Butt Pirates” – classic Cartman ins the 13th season. They’ve still got IT. Not sure if I should be offended or not, but then again South Park is an equal opportunity offender so it just makes me feel like one of the gang. I also loved Butter’s wall of suspects for the secret Identity of the Coon.
Don’t worry I doubt you need to fear small children channel surfing across Silk Spectre’s rape or Rorshach and the doggies anytime soon. This Watchmen Cartoon intro is a fan creation by UK fanboy Happy Harry – a.k.a. Harry Partridge. It combines his passion for “the comic genius (?) that is Alan Moore and the other being kids programming from the late 80s which I would say is his biggest animation inspiration.”
Thanks for the heads up frogboy!
Here is another slightly disturbing cartoon from the mind of Harry Partridge….
You have to love a good team up and that is exactly what this new DC cartoon (named for the classic Superman/Batman team up title: Brave and the Bold) provides week after week. I wasn”t sold on the overly stylized artwork originally but its growing on me. There is a certain element of plain old Golden Age fun in these cartoons, but the characters are modern DCU all the way.
I saw this on TV tonight and then happened upon it on YouTube. It will likely be removed due to copyright issues etc. But until then take a look…
