DC Direct has treated the geek community with a rare pre-comicon action figure revelation… The first 2 waves of Brightest Day Series 1 & 2 Action Figures. These look particularly good.
Starting in March 2011, DC DIRECT will kick off another series of high-quality and story-specific product, this time based around the hit biweekly series, BRIGHTEST DAY. We’ve got a first look at the first two waves, which include Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Deadman, Aquaman, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm and Mera.
So if you already have a collection of their killer Black Lantern figures, this is probably going to be the next droolworthy item on your toy wishlist. LOVE the Aquaman – he’s a must have – probably get Mera too. Firestorm I like, but unless he comes with flight stand like the Jason Rusch version I’ll skip it. I want the Hawks, Martain Manhunter and Green Arrow too. All things considered, a great line up. Hope we get a wave 3 with Osiris, Maxwell Lord, White Lantern Deadman and Ice (in the RIGHT costume!!!).
Here are videos of some REALLY nice Marvel Legends collections. I also have my own X-Men and Avengers ML collection, but these sport a number of figures I’m missing. Which is probably good as I’m out of display room. I DO have a DC Direct JLA/JSA/Teen Titans display which is on the same level. I wish I had time to shoot something like this of my displays.
The GayComicGeek launched a NEW channel (GayGeekyVlogs) at YouTube a few weeks ago and as usual he is speaking my thoughts out loud. Do I need a tinfoil hat? He shares his wishes for a gay geek posse and his fortune at having a boyfriend who lets him cram his hobby down his throat.”
If you consider yourself a “Gay Geek” please identify what “type” of geek and your general geographical area. Anonymous comments welcome as always. More interested in random hellos.
Ive been having similar thoughts lately. I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful boyfriend who tolerates my interests, and even embraces some of them. He became quite a fan of Dollhouse, Heroes and is really loving Dr. Who, Caprica and Battlestar Galactica… but I still haven’t gotten him to really read any of my comics. I wish I had more real life gay geek friends to shoot the shit with about the topics I raise here. Though if I did, I suppose I wouldn’t have had to make the blog. I’ve met a number local gay geeks at Whatever Comics in the Castro… Where do YOU meet gay geeks?
A GUEST REVIEW FROM FROGBOY (A FRIEND OF FANBOI): Greetings! I’m Frogboy; a graphic artist and longtime friend of HnH and QueerSupe’s site proprietor, Fanboi. We both share a love of toys and action figures, but usually in different areas. I’ve been waiting for the release of this little guy since seeing the prototype photo last year. Now he’s out and here’s my review. Hope to be doing more of these in the future.
The second wave of Twilight: New Moon figures are out and I just got my hands on the most anticipated selection, the iconic shirtless inaction figure of actor Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. Early photography of the prototype looked stunning, the actual figure is a little less so, yet still attractive. The articulation is limited to his head and feet. The arms are added separately, but remain glued in place to help maintain the sculptural integrity.
Click the pic of the unopened figure to buy the figure at Fanboi’s Amazon store over at QueerSUPE. Click on the Jacob Black photo or the turnaround to see them fullsize.
There’s a little airbrushing on the torso and his nipples are dotted with color. The character’s trademark abs are definitely present, but this likeness isn’t quite as chiseled and cut as Jacob appears in the motion picture. The jeans and shoes have the amount of detail collectors have come to expect from NECA.
It’s hard to imagine Lautner without his big toothy-white grin these days, but the Jacob mostly scowls in the film as he does here on the figure. The paint apps are particularly fine, yet his eyes look a little on the Asian side. By the way, has anyone pinned down the mysterious ethnicity of Taylor Lautner? The facial likeness looks best at an angle or in profile than head-on. We’ve been seeing this beautiful mug on posters and billboards for a year now, you’d think the sculptor at NECA would get this spot-on.
I predict this to be one of the iconic action figures to define this era in pop culture. Even though the Lautner is a sexier fellow than depicted here, NECA’s series two shirtless Jacob Black figure is definitely worth getting before the price goes up.
Altogether I’d give this figure 3.75 out of 5 stars.
The New Moon toy line has been released and is available at Amazon, but no word on this shirtless action figure of Taylor Lautner as wolf-boy hottie Jacob Black. I hope they haven’t decided not to release it.
This has to be the hottest action figure I’ve seen in awhile. Fingers crossed it isn’t too gay for shelves. If you have the scoop on when/if it will see the light of day, let’s hear it!
which is gayer… Jacob the shirtless wolfboy… or Gay Bob from 1977?
Too bad Jacob Black doesn’t come anatomically correct (and life size).
Its was his birthday but we get the present… This funny vid from everyone’s favorite GayComicGeek shows us how to party like a gay geek and even includes a couple flashes of him in his underoos. ENJOY! And don’t forget to send him a card!
Surprise – he likes it. I’m SOOOOO jealous!!! I WANT ONE!
OK. How many of you went to ComicCon. I think this year I may have to start planning around Christmas and start saving up. I so wanted to go – but I have the wrost financial karma in the summer. Two years in a row I ended up with a deadbeat client who owes me thousands and had no money to go. Which means I ALSO cannot afford the $100 PLUS prices he is going for on ebay…
So is there anyone who bought one to sell (or knows someone) that might be convinced to part with Gleek the Space Monkey for a more reasonable price? i CAN OFFER 2 TIMES COST PLUS… I’d be your best friend, give you a shout out on the blog and offer a soapbox post for the seller to address the readers about anything they want.
Second time in a row that my plans to get to SDCC fell through. If anyone is there or going and for some reason DOESN’T want the exclusive Gleek the Space Monkey that comes with the Wonder Twins, then PLEASE contact me! I’ll gladly pay for the cost of the figure and shipping!
San Diego Comic-Con is just about here, and the folks at MattyCollector wanted to share a little pre-Comic-Con show-stopper with you! Check out the amazing DC Universe Classics Wonder Twins package that features lights and sounds you gotta see to believe!
I’m still trying to see if I can arrange a ride and place to stay for ComicCon – I’m only in San Francisco, it shouldn’t be that hard to get down there. Just hoping I can scrounge up the funds. I MUST HAVE ONE OF THESE!!! Well 2 actually – one to open and one to keep.
They really DO look great. Does anyone know how well the DCUC figures mix in with the DCD line? I have all the DCD Teen Titans as well as a very well stocked DCD JLA and I’d like to mix Zan, Jaynaa nd their space monkey in.
I don’t see Gleek in the packaging tho!!! He does come with this set right?
DC Direct has unveiled the final figure in its upcoming Blackest Night Series 2, the Black Lantern Martian Manhunter. Strangely enough they still haven’t added the Black Lantern from Series 1 – Earth 2 Superman to their own site.
I’m also especially pleased to see a good John Stewart Green Lantern. I only see one flaw… why are his wrist bands a different color of green? and metallic?
You should thank HeroesNHunks commenter “Clark Kent” for pointing out the Blackest Night teaser group shots released at Newsarama. Always appreciate when someone sends me something that improves a post!
This has to be one of the oddest things I’ve heard about in all my years as a porn fan. Now action figures of pornstars are not that unusual. Many female straight porn starlets have been immortalized in plastic. And the gay porn world is no stranger to toys either, as supercock Jeff Stryker has his own action figure, and he was preceded by the anatomically gifted Billy Doll (no relation to Herrington).
What is unusual is why Billy Herrington is getting his own figure. Apparently some workout video of his got posted on a Japanese YouTube-like site and then took off from there as an internet meme that is so popular he warrants his own toy. I do not understand.
UPDATE: Links to a fairly complete filmography of the work of Billy Herrington can be found at bottom of post.
That body… that appearance… they truly are mystical. The well-known idol from NicoNico Douga, the "underwear wresting aniki", Billy Herrington has been made into his very own figma!
•
Using the smooth yet poseable joints of figma, you can act out various wrestling scenes.
•
A flexible plastic is used for his breast muscles and biceps, allowing the proportions of his beautiful body to be kept, without compromising the posability.
•
The first figma to bare his naked body, allowing for even more thriving poses!
•
Barbells and dumbbells are included so Billy can keep his body in perfect shape.
•
His underwear is identical to that which appeared in his videos, and there are two variations to switch between, or worn together at the same time. A skin-colored pair is also included for an even more naked appearance.
•
A shower head and shower room paper craft are also included, allowing you to produce even more situations.
•
Comes with a poseable figma stand that makes it possible to recreate various scenes.
It DOES make me how many Japanese are sitting at home wishing they had action figures of Billy Herrington, and exactly what kind of thriving scenes and situations they are envisioning for him. Will there be a deluge of stop motion Herrington animations online after they come out? Will people buy a pair for twin scenes?
Billy Herrington has also become an internet meme among the Japanese community after a clip from one of his videos ‘Workout’ was posted on Nico Nico Douga, a Japanese video sharing website. Over 3000 parody videos of him have been made, many of which utilizes deliberate mishearings of his lines in the porn flick. He is affectionately called “Big Brother” among the Nico Nico Douga community, and most of his videos are deliberately tagged with “Forest Fairy”, “Philosophy” or both.
It looks like the impending Ms. Lion appearance in The Pet Avengers isn’t the only recent reference to the retro cartoon that aired from 1981 – 1983 (with repeats airing from 1984 – 1986). Marvel Legends revealed prototypes for action figures of the Spider Friends (as Spiderman, Iceman and Firestar were known). The trio has seen recent resurgence in Marvel’s Ultimate Spiderman but Firestar is longtime supporting Spidey character Liz Allen instead of Angelica Jones.
Here’s the intro for you nostalgia buffs out there…

If you were worried that the JLI series 1Ice you are about to buy was going to go without Fire, worry no more! Plus J’onn J’onz, Blue Beetle and a goofy smiling thumbs up Booster Gold. I knew I’d want Fire, but I didn’t think they could make a Beetle, Booster or Martian Manhunter to replace the ones in my display – but I actually want all 4 of this line).
I couldn’t find a DDay linked up with that identifier. Giving up…
According to ComicsContinuum, Hasbro’s Marvel Legends: Nemesis Build-a-Figure Wave, is apparently due Wal-Mart stores this month – YAY!!!! Finally a Tigra to complete my Avengers display! Now if I could only get them to release that classic John Byrne era Storm (that they cruelly teased us with before giving us AoA Sunfire instead) to finish off my Marvel Legends X-Men. If anyone sees an extra Tigra – let me know, as there are no Wal-marts in the San Francisco city limits so I have to resort to ebay toy scalpers.
In addition to the 6-piece build-a-figure Nemesis (1 part per figure – but you don’t have to buy the varients too if you don’t want to – unlike previous non Hasbro ML series), the wave includes Astonishing X-Men Beast, Black Bolt, First Appearance Daredevil, Daredevil, Nova, Tigra, Punisher and Camouflage Punisher.

DC Direct has released images for the first 2 series’ of History of the DC Universe – based on the art of legendary comic book artist George Perez. Both series are due in summer 2009.
Series Two consisting of Aquaman, classic 70’s Black Lighting, the Creeper and the Flash (OK – hardcore Flash fans… lightning belt circling waist marks him as silver age Barry, right?) hits shelves about a month later on July 15 2009.
I am eagerly anticipating Blue Devil, Aquaman (I have the one with the cheesy golden age smile that came with Garth and a giant seahorse), Black Lightning (as cool as the modern age JLA version looks, nostalgia calls for the classic look) and I also want the Flash (which I prefer to the upcoming Justice League of America Series 3 Wally West version)
Super strength is now possible if you have a Japanese prototype bionic suit intended to aid people with disabilities to walk or lift heavy objects. I can find articles as far back as 2005, but this video of Hal 3 (hybrid assistive limb)popped up on MySpace this morning.
I hope it’s only a matter of time until they can miniaturize the technology, add armor plating, flight capability and repulsor rays! We’ll have Iron Man for real any day now.
