Recent inactivity on this blog is due to many things, the most addicting (some have threatened interventions) and time consuming of which is the recent launch of Going Rogue, the 3rd commercial release in the MMORPG City of Heroes/City of Villains. Going Rogue has 2 main components… first an alternate dimension called Praetoria in which Statesman, the big hero of CoH rules with an iron fist as Emperor Cole a.k.a. Tyrant, and second a new morality system that allows Heroes and Villains to undertake a series of missions to change their alignment and cross over into enemy territory for the first time.
So of course I had to dust off some of my cooler heroes who has been gathering dust blueside since I created the Obsidian Oath in CoV and lost interest in the CoH side of things. Zirconia is a 44 Peacebringer and Nic Nictus is a lvl 32 Warshade. Both of them have gone through the arcs required to first become Vigilantes (the alignment heroes become before they become villains) and have already become full fledges villans and members of the Obsidian Oath. My Praetorians are Cherry Boomboom – a cyborg transsexual with a nanotech robovagina, and Zhapp a sentient Praetorian clockwork seeking and escape from a life of servitude. Cherry is already in the Obsidian Oath but Zhapp is still in Praetoria.
OK that’s enough blathering about City of Heroin. The point is I know I’ve been slackin’ off at the blog of late and am working on getting back to a more regular schedule. As a sign of things to come, I’m going to try and polish off a bunch of half completed articles I had started and left to finish up. ENJOY the week!

Really sorry that I’ve been a bit busy lately and just haven’t been making the time I need to blog. First I got sucked back into the exciting world of Dragon Age Origins: Awakening (the expansion) – more on that soon I promise. It has made for a pleasant mini virtual-vacation, but no worries I will be back at it soon enough.
Then I decided to replace my old portfolio site with something using a blog format. So I’ve been working on adding posts on all my work to PXLFORGE.com. Please check it out and keep me in mind if ya need anything designed. Its a brand new site – but I’ve used the dates to archive material chronologically.
A number of you sent me this recent article in the venerable New York Times about Skintight USA, a recurring gay spandex / superhero costume fetish party at the historic Stonewall Inn in NYC. It was a really interesting piece about the gay spandex subculture and got me back to thinking about something I had been considering when I started this blog. With all the annual gay events in San Francisco (PRIDE, Folsom, Dore Alley, Castro St Fair, Bear Weekend, Halloween etc) I’m surprised I haven’t seen more Superhero-Themed parties like these out here.
I did attend something called “Superhero Sunday” at Truck a few years back, and found they also held a Halloween party called Heroes & Villains in 2009 (not sure if it will be an annual event). I worked with the people behind a weekly Friday night party held at The Lookout called ACTIVATE on their concept and advertising. It was originally supposed to have a superhero flavor, but it never became what we discussed (we had plans for costumed gogo boys etc that never got past generic body paint) and devolved into a typical nightclub vibe before it was replaced by another weekly party.
I’ve heard of similar events in SoCal… During Comiccon, Rich’s Nightclub in San Diego hosts Young Heroes and MJ’s Bar in LA has been host to the Annual Hard Heroes party (Featuring Captain Lucky and his crew) for years, so there IS an audience. If I could figure out who to approach about finding/making quality sexy super costumes for gogo boys (hopefully pornstars), I might be able to interest some San Francisco nightlife connections I have in the idea of an HnH annual event that coincides with one of the major gay tourist weekends.
Thoughts? The way I picture it, people wouldn’t HAVE to dress up but would get discounted drinks and be eligible for prizes if they did. So I’m basically just sort of testing the waters. Seeing if people like the idea and if anyone out there has a skillset that might be useful or knows of anyone who would be interested. PLEASE comment no matter whether you love, hate or are completely indifferent to the idea. I realize it would be a lot of work and may be too late to get started for 2010, but maybe 2011?

One of the perks of doing graphics work for TRIGGER is invites to some of the cooler events. Last week Popathy and I attended the Gloss Magazine Holiday Soiree at TRIGGER where Jennifer Coolidge was the celebrity guest. I left him unattended for about 30 seconds and he got swept up in the wake of of fierce drag queens following behind her and by the time I caught up with him they were old friends and he was molesting her foot. She was very sweet and looked fabulous as well. I would love to see her get a reality TV show of her won in the Kathy Griffin Life on the D List genre.

WARNING HUMAN EMOTION: I got an unexpected call from my old childhood friend Mike. We first met in 5th grade and were in school together through High School graduation). Subconsciously, I recognized his voice right away but I was surprised to hear from him, so it didn’t register at first. After a bit of banter about how good it was to hear the other an so on, he got to the point… which was to tell me that our mutual friend Hal had died.
UPDATE: I visited my folks for dinner and to take a stroll through memory lane (they still have all my old memorabilia). I found this photo from my Senior photos. I had both BFFs Hal and Mike come in with me so I could have good pictures of us together (and looking back I am SO glad I did). Bumping due to photo. (I’m on the right).
Hal and Mike were my closest friends for 8 years of middle and upper school at a VERY small private school in Omaha NE. Mike was the true blue and dependable by the book, boy scout type who would give you the shirt off his back. But he was also the one whose first instinct at the prospect of getting in trouble was “I wasn’t here!!!” Hal was more of a troublemaker at heart. While he was a good kid and we never did anything REALLY bad, there was a mischievous imp at his core that was definitely a force with which to be reckoned. If I had to think of a phrase that reminds me of something Hal might say, it would have to be “If you don’t have anything nice to say, come sit next to me.”
Hal and I were gay best friends long before either of us knew we were gay. At that point Denial was just a river in Egypt and neither of us had a clue – at least I didn’t. I used to spend the night at his house all the time and we would watch TV (I remember seeing the Thriller premiere and Heavy Metal on his Cable TV) or draw together, sometimes I’d help him work on his paper mache woodland habitat for this collection he had of little poseable mice and creatures (stuffed dolls with wire armatures). Yeah we were big ‘ol dorks.
As we grew older, but remained good kids who didn’t act out (I held off on the wild life til college in Boston), there wasn’t that much to do in Omaha but movies and dining out so our group did that a lot. I wish I could afford to eat out as well or as often as I did then (spoiled rotten). We grew up. He got a girlfriend and we had less and less time hanging out solo, but our clic still socialized weekly. Some of my favorite memories of Hal are out at dinner either with the gang or by ourselves as I listened to his fashion police routine… his vicious wit nailing everyone within view – and in 80’s Omaha targets were plentiful. His humor was sharp as a knife and just as cutting. Although there was often more than a little friendly fire involved in his mocking it was still worth a bit of verbal shrapnel to hear what he’d come up with next.
We seemed to lose touch after we left for college, but I oddly finally really became friends with Hal’s high school girlfriend who I hadn’t REALLY known that well in school other than as “that girl he kept ditching us for.” One visit home during college she and I hung out and really hit it off due to similar new interests. Eventually, I found out from her that he’d taken a semester off, was gay and in therapy. And years later, I’m sure she was also the one to tell him about me when figured things out and came out myself. I saw Hal when I visited for Mike’s wedding a few years back, but he and I never REALLY reconnected in any real way or talked about why we grew apart. I always figured he’d show up out here in San Francisco for a visit someday. But alas…
I’ll always miss you Hal and will never forget how you made me laugh. My thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. As sad as the occasion is, I’m glad I’ve had the chance to reconnect with some really great old friends. I hope to get a chance to visit soon so we can all share our memories of Hal.
Just so you don’t think I’ve been remiss in my blogging lately, this weekend I took stock of my BY REQUEST galleries and realized that ALL the early galleries were WOEFULLY inadequate when compared to my more recent mega-posts. So I took it upon myself to expand them a bit. If you haven’t yet decked the Halls its time to whip out the tinsel. Christmas Eve has always been my favorite part of this holiday. My family (Me, Mom and Dad) always sat by the fireplace listening to Carols as we opened presents from each other Christmas Eve and opened the rest on Christmas Day when the extended family congregated for dinner. In recent years TBS has added another tradition – watching A Christmas Story at least once during their annual 24-hour marathon. 2008 marks TBS’s 12th annual A Christmas Story marathon.
Second Guessing Grandma – a heartwarming short film set in the 80’s about a young man educating his beloved elderly Jewish grandma as he comes out to her.

I’m a little melancholy this Thanksgiving. My mom had a hip replaced a few weeks ago and aside from the time in hospital, this is the first time I’ve ever seen her as anything less than a force of nature. But today she was in pajamas with a cane at Thanksgiving as we ate pizza. Mom has always hated cooking the whole turkey-n-stuffing combo (she’s more of a holiday ham gal) so deep down she probably see’s this as a “get out of Thanksgiving free” card but was still distressing to see her so frail and not up to the task of a holiday dinner. Dad made it sound like she WANTED pizza, but I think he was just too lazy to find us a good alternative – I’ll take over if she’s still not reay by Christmas. According to Dad, she’s really making good progress tho. . So, I’m just trying to be supportive and help her with anything Dad might not foresee – he is typical of the unconscious straight guy on many levels – lets just say, although he DOES care for her deeply – (she’s his world) but he’s not always hella empathic.
For some reason the extremely dysfunctional ensemble cast of Home For the Holidays chears me up a bit – call it schadenfreude…
P.S. Although the drama is entertaining, I hope your own personal Thanksgivings went off without an emotional hitch. Happy Thanksgiving form Fanboi at HeroesNHunks!
I came out to my own parents quite late, as I was chicken, the only child, adopted AND they’re from a different generation (mid-70s now). But they’ve been surprisingly cool and supportive to a point. I’ve mentioned my boyfriend (whom you may remember as popapathy) numerous times over the past year, they always ask after him and say nice things about being happy for me etc, yet they have yet to ask to meet him. I’ve decided once Mom is well enough to get herself downtown for lunch again, she’s well enough to meet him. Now I just have to get her and him on board.

Was a bit busy today. I’m working on ads for a new weekly event starting at the Lookout in San Francisco. ACTIVATE! (a pxlforge logo design) launches Pride Friday, June 21st 2008! It IS a superhero themed Pride party so expect deuling DJ’s, hot gogo boys and high profile guest stars decked out and dancing.
Illustrations all begin on paper. I first come up with a pose I like and once I’ve finished a basic version of the figure, I break out the vellum and design the clothes on a new layer so I can doodle all over it as I brainstorm. After The costume overlay is finished, then I draw the costume on my figure and ink it before scanning the image and coloring the file in Photoshop with dozens of multiplied layers over the black and white artwork.
