If you haven’t read Blackest Night #6 STOP WHERE YOU ARE AND DO NOT CLICK ON THE SPOILERIFIC IMAGES BELOW. Stand up, and go to a comic store, buy it, read it, then come back here and we’ll dish.
If you HAVE read it, then by all means take a look and then be sure to leave a comment telling me what you think. My own thoughts, more spoiler details (and another teaser image!) are available in the rest of this entry…
The void is now in the mind of Scott Summers and Magneto is making deals with Namor as Beast announces a decision. Strangely enough there are no reanimated mutants running around this title. Must be a big island.
Cyclops takes a voyage into the head of Emma Frost in hopes of containing the horrifying piece of the villainous Void that has been stuck there since UTOPIA. Can they possibly defeat the awfulness that has haunted the most powerful being in the Marvel U?
Tensions are rising on Utopia as the X-Men deal with the new members of their team and the fact that the island is…well…sinking
I guess Beast is off orbital adventures to the pages of S.W.O.R.D for awhile?
Taskmaster weighs the decision to sit at the big boy table. But w hen the stake raise so does the danger and he may not have taken enough time to make his choice.
A SIEGE: THE CABAL TIE-IN! Months of story threads finally weave together as Norman Osborn offers Taskmaster a seat at the Cabal’s table…the Avengers Resistance uncovers a horrifying secret…and members of the Initiative are called up for an assault on an enemy of incalculable power!
Although this issue is primarily a peek into the history of the Gorgon, we’re also treated to a bit of characterization as Stonewall takes YoYo to visit her home for the first time since losing her arms and having them replaced with cybernetic ones. From the conversation before she went in, it seems like whatever they are, Stonewall’s secrets may be “coming out” soon. Still keeping my fingers crossed on him playing for OUR team.
One month later. Nick Fury’s got an army. Hydra goes to war. Leviathan reveals itself. Things heat up and Young Gun Stefano Caselli returns to knock it out of the park!
I think whatever Nick Fury has been cooking up since #1, his plans are starting to come together. We should be treated to something epic soon.
“The Gay Pimp” Johnny McGovern is at it again. Bossy Bottom is a sassy ‘n trashy new gay strip club anthem celebrating those hot boys on the receiving end. featuring TEAM PIMP (Erickatoure, Linda James, Adam Joseph & Maxi J).
It seems like the fugitive life does not agree with the New Avengers, between having to break out Clint Barton in the annual and Luke Cage last issue, the team should try harder to not get captured by Norman. When we last saw our intrepid New Avengers they were surrounding the bedside of recently rescued post-op heart patient Luke Cage who was unaware of a tiny device attached to his heart. Now these are the REAL Avengers so you don’t put one over on them. Norman Osborn will be sorry as this issue the New Avengers hit him close to home.
Get ready for something you never thought you’d see! Is this the end of Luke Cage? Has the Dark Reign found a casualty so horrifying that the Avengers may not be able to keep it together? Another shocker from the crack team of Bendis and Immonen.
All this PLUS the fallout of Dr. Jonas Harrow’s attempted coup of the Red Hood’s band of baddies. If you are going to lead a criminal organization, you have to make an example of the bad apples. I don’t want to give away the explosive surprise, but I will say that by the end of the issue, Normie’s looking PISSED with some serious crazy eyes!!!! I cannot wait to see him completely meltdown once Marvel’s Trinity reunited the Avengers and establishes a new status quo for the Marvel Universe.
I was a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan who watched the show religiously from the airing of the first episode. So I was psyched to hear of a new one shot about what my favorite lesbian witch was up to between the end of season 7 and the beginning of “Season 8.”
Willow Rosenberg has worn many faces–a shy computer geek, a loyal friend, a passionate lover, a fierce Wiccan, and a dark Willow. In Season Eight of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Buffy comics series, Willow’s powers have grown exponentially. She can fly. Teleport. And may or may not be immortal. All we know is that Willow went on a walkabout following the demise of Sunnydale, and she met a very sultry, extremely powerful serpent lady who seems to be the key to unraveling the mysteries of what Willow is, and will become.
Buffy mastermind Joss Whedon brings us a special one shot issue showcasing the beginning of Willow’s path to becoming the powerful sorceress she is now. It didn’t really give away that much besides how Willow met Aluwyn the trickster serpent-goddess. I wish this was the first of a 3 or 4 issue miniseries that told the whole story. I would have liked a longer, more poignant moment with Tara, but it was nice to see her for a moment.
Strange thing are afoot. Sue Storm is missing! Mister Fantastic is behaving like a cold calculating killer! Guido is making gladiator jokes! Shatterstar can kick the Thing’s ass? Siryn is banging Deadpool? Lalya Miller is in Latveria?
X-Factor has relocated back to New York, and their first client is a keeper: Franklin Richards, whose mom has disappeared and who figures that the premiere detective agency in the Marvel Universe has the best chance of finding her. Except Reed Richards doesn’t seem especially cooperative in helping them locate his missing wife. What is he hiding, and does it have anything to do with the coming Darkness?
Meanwhile, Val Cooper has some bad news for Monet: Her ambassador father has been taken prisoner by terrorists, and she has less than 24 hours to find him before he winds up getting his head cut off on video.
One thing that I thought was odd was the profile on Layla Miller doesn’t include any of the info we learned in X-Factor #50. She does NOT in fact have precognitive abilities. She went back in time after the Summers Rebellion and gave her younger self her accumulated memories. Her read super power is to raise the dead (sans soul – hence Trevor Fitzroy ends up the evil asshole Bishop eventually hunts to the past). But the profile says she “sees portions of possible futures.” Who wrote this and why didn’t an editor tell them about the big reveal last issue?
As usual a concise and well thought out review from the GayComicGeek. I keep waiting to disagree with him. I may have to peruse his complete archive and find something to argue about to prove I’m not a shill.
I read this last year and REALLY enjoyed the book. There really aren’t many books out there in the superhero/young adult genre and as far as I know this is the only one about a gay character. Hero is supposed to be “in development” to become a TV show with the backing of Stan Lee himself. I pretty much agree with most of his points. It was a great read but occasionally is a bit predictable if you really know your superhero cliches.
OK, as someone who really liked the new Batwoman after her introduction and has been eagerly anticipating a place for her stories, I wanted to love this title, but right now it just is rating a solid “like.” J.H. Williams’ art deco flavored artwork is perfect to capture the haunted quality of Gotham City, but I’m finding the “Alice” part of the storyline as arcane as part 3’s title – Affettuoso – which is Italian for “affection”. I read the story but still don’t get the title.
Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams continue to put the pressure on Gotham’s newest hero with the third part of ‘Elegy,” as Batwoman unites with an unlikely ally to momentarily defeat the fairytale villain known as Alice.
I read the “Crime Bible” mini with Batwoman and the Question, but I remember the followers as human? Not sure who the purple tentacle guy and werewolf are. I’ll need to read up and then maybe I’ll like the next issue better.
When Kate is forced to attend another high society event, she soon learns that her worlds are crashing together. Want more? Check out a few pages below. And then, head on over to your local shop. Simple, right?
A highlight this issue is the first meeting of 2 of the DCU’s most influential lesbians… Kate Kane, meet Maggie Sawyer. We know Kate likes cops. I hear music.
OFFICIAL NEWS: former Batgirl and Flamebird – Bette Kane will be attending “GU” (Gotham University I assume).

I was surprised they didn’t draw out the mystery longer. With all the hype and mystery DC has tried to drum up around this I was sure they would keep us guessing for a few issues… but no. The bat is let out of the bag by page 6. and the lucky lady is… (comment or read the rest of the entry for that spoilerific revelation).
I will say it ISN’T Cassandra Cain under that cowl. But I don’t see Cassandra completely walking away from the good fight. Her allegiances were to Bruce and with him gone, I foresee a new identity not as closely tied to the Bat. Maybe something linked to her mother Lady Shiva? Perhaps she’ll try to take her mothers title?
In Issue #1, we lost Hawkman and Hawkgirl to Black LanternRalph and Sue Dibney. Who will fall in issue #2? Well I’ll be going into detail on that after the jump, so don’t go commenting or reading the rest of this entry until you have read it for yourself.
It is a testament to Geoff Johns‘ writing that this epic event is starting out with far more promise than Final Crisis did (as far as the story goes that is). With every panel, it feels far more dire a situation than some homeless Evil Gods run amok. The dead have risen across the universe and they are adding to their ranks with every kill. We already have some powerful corpses on the board and those are just the ones who started out dead – if they manage to kill any more heavy hitters…
One black mark on an otherwise spectacular issue was pointed out by a blogger at Newsarama. The solicit for Blackest Night#2 said it was 40 pages, it only had 24 story pages, 8 pages of ads, a 3 page waste of “Black Hand’s diary” and a 5 page preview of Superman Secret Origin #1 (which looks amazing) for the same price as issue #1 ($3.99) , but #1 had 39 PAGES OF STORY and 8 pages of ads. FOUL!!!
As much as I think I will enjoy the ride, I can’t help but speculate on what could possible resolve this ungodly situation. Read that and a play-by-play of issue #2 after the jump! Read the rest of this entry »
The team continues its proactive hunt for justice as the trail leads to an army of Super-Villains. But the big bad may be deadlier than all of the new team combined…
OK, is it just me or does this “hey we all have suffered a recent loss that MUST BE AVENGED” thing seem hokey (I keep waiting for someone to bring up Grabthar’s hammer or the sons of Worvan), unnecessary (with the myriad of baddies present when Martian Manhunter died there was already a natural reason to bring together a group) and lazy (it’s all so convenient to have them all on different trails that happen to coincide).
I’m not sure I like the exchange between Hal and Ollie about (I believe) a 3way with Huntress and Lady Blackhawk? #1 I don’t buy it. I know Zinda can “drink her liquor like a gentleman,” hangs out in bars and in general is about as ladylike as Wolverine, but Helena Bertinelli is a good Catholic schoolteacher (well OK her family was mobbed up, but oh never mind I knew some good Catholic girls back in my day). It just seems like an odd thing to throw out there. As random an inappropriate as if Ollie and Hal had been reminiscing about “that time they double-teamed Star Sapphire“. Superhero 3ways?!?! AND THEY BALK AT SEEING A LOVING GAY KISS!?!?!
I expected a little more of writer James Robinson after his phenomenal work on Starman. Mauro Casciolli’s artwork is breathtaking so I’ll keep picking it up (also it likley sets the stage for Robinson’s upcoming run on the JLA) to see where they are going with this. What is Prometheus up to? Is he trying to draw this specific group into a trap? He is the anti-Batman so I don’t see him being unaware of the trail our heroes are following.
Secret Six is definitely one of the best antihero books I’ve ever come across. The shining heroic glory of the DCU pantheon often overshadows the myriad of fascinating characters that oppose them. Writer Gail Simone has really given this title a wonderful insight into the depraved mind of a “villain.”
A crisis of conscience splits the Secret Six right down the middle and puts them on opposite sides of a horrific war involving Amazons led by a deluded Artemis!
Umm so Artemis ISN’T dead then? With her experience as a warrior, Diana should REALLY be a better judge of a corpse.
But that’s just the opening bout for the main event… for the icing on the cake, folks: Jeannette and Wonder Woman step into the ring for an all-out brawl
These bad boys (Catman, Deadshot and Bane) are looking as hot as ever – Thank you Nicola Scott for all the comic book beefcake you provide monthly. Keep up the equal opportunity objectification!
UPDATE: I’ve read it and there is a major reveal of something they’ve TOTALLY hinted at (so obviously now that I think about it that I cannot believe it didn’t occur to me before). I expose the truth after the jump so don’t comment or read the rest of this entry until you’ve read the issue! Read the rest of this entry »

Now I’m sure I’m just reading into this because I overheard a porn producer saying the EXACT same thing to this one really hot jockstrap-clad gogo boy the other night… I swear!
I know there once was a Mrs. Dugan, but a man has needs and she’s been dead awhile. He could be a late bloomer. Ol’ Dum Dum might as well have sauntered up to Stonewall with that mini leather daddy mustache of his wearing assless leather chaps and a bowler hat saying “hey there boy. You, the tall shirtless one in the tight leather pants and riveted opera gloves. I like the cut of yer jib.”
I think the writers are just fucking with us at this point. First they give him the name Stonewall and that beefcake costume, keep him practically mute and now this? Is this a tease, a completely innocent post battle male-bonding moment or the beginning of a May/December romance? Yeah It’s probably B, but It still made me laugh.
Now that Meggan (now a.k.a. Gloriana) is finally reunited with Captain Britain they end the damn book? It’s really a shame as I enjoyed what Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk did with the characters.
“VAMPIRE STATE” The final battle with Dracula is here! Can what’s left of MI13 possibly defeat the most brilliant military strategist alive (or at least undead)? Who is Gloriana and what role does Dr. Doom play in this whole thing? Do not miss this cataclysmic conclusion! Part 6 (of 6)
While this arc-and-series-ending issue does a reasonably good job of tying up loose ends into a tight little bow, it doesn’t feel like the end of a series, more like one creative team passing the torch.
Farewell comments from series creator Paul Cornell’s blog after the jump. Next up for the writer is a 4 issue miniseries revealing the Deadly Origin of Natalia Romanova – a.k.a. Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. the Black Widow!
I don’t think writers do things like this by mistake. Usage of commonly known idiom’s such as “playing for both teams” are pretty obvious. Thoughts? What will Wolvie think of it? I’m guessing Daken’s a bisexual top, he seems bossy.
Thanks to Jennifer of FantasticFangirls who pointed out that this is far from the first hint of this tattooed bad boy’s AC/DC inclinations. Apparently Daken admitted to kissing (and killing) a man in Wolverine Origins #11, and has been using his pheromone power to sexually manipulate women and men in Dark Wolverine. Damn – ANOTHER title I’ll have to start picking up!
Also thanks to reader and regular commenter Psiwire who sent me these panels that reveal how Daken sexually manipulated a male H.A.M.M.E.R. employee with his pheromone power and him hitting on fellow Dark Avenger Mac Gargan – the Dark Avengers answer to “Spider-Man” (really Venom – formerly The Scorpion).
With all this evidence, it seems this is not just a tease. I love that all these new (and old) characters are coming out these days!
Anyone else got a scan that adds fuel to the bisexual fire? Send it in for a shout out! For that matter – send me anything you spot that “outs” ANY comic book character!

I know, big surprise. But Still YAY!!!! As I predicted, her “death” was merely a transformation into energy. The only original aspect was they she came back as 4 energy beings that needed to be merged by a bevvy of reality-warping freakbabys. So well her known fan and namesake RJ Danvers can breath easy. As long as she survives NEXT ISSUE!
But when did Carol’s belt/sash become a pelvic adornment? Its riding a little low. Other than that she’s looking fabulous and ready to kick some impostor ass. But I doubt it will be that simple. I think Dark Reign will be continuing for some months to come and a knock down drag out fight between Carol and Karla isn’t going to solve anything.
But it should feel good providing Karla tastes Carols boot.
GayComicGeek was so livid about Rob Liefeld’s recent comments, that he resurrected the AngryComicBookNerd and really says it best with this posts title.
And thanks for another Shout-out! Love your reviews! In case you folks hadn’t heard, apparently Rob Liefeld has locked down the threads on this topic at his own forum. I guess he was not getting the usual verbal handjob he has come to expect from his adoring fans. Anyone who runs a forum that way is just interested in hearing his own opinion echoed back.
I’ll keep covering the developing relationship between Rictor and Shatterstar (#46 is out NEXT WEEK!!!), but I’ve given homophobic hack Rob Liefeld too much press already. So feel free to pester him if you like, but barring further developments, I’m going to move on. There is just no sense arguing with a waste of human flesh.
I just spotted this, was thinking it was the video you mentioned in comment today. Dunno how I missed it before. Thanks SO much for the shout out on YouTube GayComicGeek! Big fan of your stuff! REALLY looking forward to your follow-up about Liefeld’s ridiculous remarks!
