UPDATE: Chat with Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on Twitter about Justice League : The Rise and Fall today (03.10.10) at 6:30pm EST
With Justice League: Cry for Justice in the can and its secrets out of the bag we can really talk about this. How do YOU feel about the wanton destruction of whole cities not to mention killing off fictional toddlers with a lineage that makes possible great potential for good OR evil depending on the ideas of future writers. I get that they wanted to send Green Arrow down a dark path, but killing off his goddaughter Lian along with 90,000 other Star City citizens?
I think we are heading into the territory of bloody carnage for the sake of shock value. I wonder if he’s going to run into Lian’s mom Cheshire on the dark path? I bet she’ll be PISSED! Her being on his side might snap him out of it?
The aftershocks of Green Arrow’s actions at the end of JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE are only beginning to be felt, as the heroic community that includes Ollie’s teammates begin to discover just how far the Emerald Archer went. How can Green Arrow face his friends after taking justice into his own hands? Find out here, courtesy of writer J.T. Krul and an all-star art crew including Mike Mayhew, Diogenes Neves and Fabrizio Fiorentino.
Now as to poor Roy’s arm, that although I think it was just as violent and unnecessarily shocking as the rest of Cry for Justice, I will be so happy to see him give up the Red Arrow identity. I always felt it was a step back for the character.
On Ollie killing Prometheus… more power to him. He DEFINITELY had it coming. You don’t get to kill 90,000+ people AND the god-daughter of a JLA member and live. Will the JLA feel the same way? I bet a few might agree. I’m more interested in why Ollie was able to put an arrow through his metal visor so easily. Hope it’s not another doppelganger.
Years ago a herald of Galactus sacrificed her life for the universe, but a portion of her spirit lived on. And in Heralds that spirit returns to seek revenge "on those who left her behind." And how does a redhead civilian named Francis figure into this cosmic drama? My guess is as some kind of host for the spirit of Frankie Raye but I may just have to pick this up to find out for sure.

The fourth Avengers title joining Avengers, New Avengers and Secret Avengers is Avengers Academy, written by Avengers: The Initiative scribe Christos Gage and featuring art by Mike McKone. I LOVED McKone’s work on Teen Titans and am so psyched to see him get an ongoing title. There will be more Academy students revealed this week and I’ll update this post as they become available…
For now we just have these teasers showing a girl with the codename Veil, a cute boy in a lightning bolt danskin codenamed Striker, and a lizard-boy dinomorph named Reptil (who was seen in the Initiative). Apparently there was a “Veil” running around during Civil War but no word on if this is the original Veil (thought killed by Pyro of Freedom Force) or someone new. No word on who this “Striker” is.
I want to like this title, but am underwhelmed with the roster thus far. But then again it might matter more who the FACULTY will be… I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that the Young Avengers will have something to do with this title.

The recent revelation that Gail Simone was leaving Wonder Woman has been followed by today’s announcement that J. Michael Straczynski (Rising Stars) will be taking over writing chores for 2 of DC’s biggest stars as of their July issues. He had a lot to say about Clark and Diana…
Wonder Woman is a strong, mythic, powerful character who for some time now has been kind of drowning under the weight of her own mythos, so I’m looking forward to paring away some of the layers of debris and undergrowth that have piled up around her in order to get to the core of the character. We’re going to be looking more closely at how Wonder Woman appears, and functions, and her role in the DCU… and what we have planned will, we hope, come across as dynamic and powerful as she deserves to be.
Similarly, we plan to bring Superman back to his roots, to really explore who he is…how he sees us, and how we see him, in a much more personal way than we’ve seen in a while. This is part of a larger effort that will have national ramifications, but I can’t say much more about it than that for now. Keep an eye on TheSource for more information when the time is right…but for now, let’s just say that Superman may be a lot closer in proximity to you, the reader, than you ever guessed.
J. Michael Straczynski couldn’t be more excited that DC is using this June’s monumental anniversary issues of these two titles to kick off his run. I’m not sure how much contribution he’ll be making to those issues, but his run begins in earnest with 701 and 601. To say he’s a lifelong Superman fan who is realizing a childhood dream with this gig is an understatement. He grew up a poor kid from Jersey who looked to Superman as the icon of inspiration and strength, even carrying the S symbol like a personal talisman.
You also might know Straczynski from his recent work on Thor, The Twelve, Fantastic Four, Supreme Power, and Midnight Nation (last 2 both with recent Superman artist Gary Frank). I’m not sure how excited I am about this. It REALLY sounds like he’s more interested in doing Superman and Wonder Woman might get the short end of the stick. Lets hope not.
Artists for his run have yet to be announced, but I’m hoping the fact that Straczynski has teamed with Gary Frank TWICE before makes him a likely candidate for regular Superman artist.

Class Comics has released volume 2 of Tug Harder, chronicling the xxxploits of Doug Arder, an undercover photojournalist prepared to do whatever it takes to get the hottest unauthorized pictures he can. Of course he doesn’t realize how far his story will take him, this time or the next!
Tug Harder vol 1: Secretly photographing his exploits, he screws his way through a farmyard of hard working men; drunks, ex-cons and college dropouts alike. But Hell hath no fury like a redneck scorned!
Tug Harder vol 2: After being rescued by an alien force, Tug photograps his way through the mother ship and discovers a plot so big, that it will impact the entire human race! The farmhands from volume 1 have also been taken with him, and they are all "experimented" with in the most unthinkable of manners! There are unexpected, but not unplesant side effects to these experiments however!
Fan Favorite writer Gail Simone is ending her lengthy run on Wonder Woman. There is no word as of yet who will be taking over as writer for WW, but Gail has a mouthful about her mystery successor… She said she was “genuinely thrilled by who is taking over the book,” assures us that the new writer will rock this book like there’s no tomorrow” and adds “people are going to freak and that makes me smile a lot.”
I hope whoever it is (stay tuned) will keep Achilles and Patrick Cleese (Patroclus) around. I want to see that relationship develop and will be severely disappointed if the new team lets them languish in literary limbo.
She reunites with Secret Six artist Nicola Scott for her final WW story arc in Wonder Woman #42 (a 3 part story about “a big, crazy invasion story featuring the return of someone from WW history”), ending her tenure on the book with issue #45, but will also contribute to the newly renumbered Wonder Woman #600 (which would be #45). She also revealed that a life-long dream of hers “comes true in WONDER WOMAN #600″
I’ve looked through an archive of her foes and there aren’t many alien females listed… two I noticed were Eviless and Badra but they are pretty obscure. Any guesses on Gail’s last pick for a big bad?
But fans should fear not! Big things are afoot for Gail Simone… Not only will she be continuing on with her fantastic work on Secret Six and is coming full-circle at DC by reteaming with artist Ed Benes on Birds of Prey (the book that marked her big start with the publisher), but she’s also penning a new Welcome to Tranquility mini due in July!
With the revealed cover to Siege: Fallen igniting a frenzy of rumors about the supposedly impending death of The Sentry,” CBR’s Comic Book Legends Revealed decided to spotlight the super secret origin of the character. He was created by Paul Jenkins and artist Rick Veitch. He was originally meant to be an over the hill mid-level superhero with an addiction problem and a long backstory dating back to 50s before becoming a “forgotten” hero. Since he was supposed to have had adventures that touched many eras, Veitch designed a number of looks for the character, each reflecting the costumes of the time.
The pair created not only a fictional history for the Sentry within the Marvel Universe, but also a fictional publication history in the “real world.” They had planned on crediting the fictional “old time” comic book artists Chick Rivet and Juan Pinkles (anagrams of their names) as the Sentry’s creators.
The concept and creative team for the Sentry experienced some shake-ups once it got to the pitch stage. Veitch was replaced by Jae Lee (hot off his Inhumans mini). The Sentry’s power level was SIGNIFICANTLY increased. The addiction element of the character was shelved until the recent revelation that he was addicted to a serum that gives him his powers.
When the time FINALLY came to credit someone with the “long ago” creation of this “forgotten” character, Marvel promoted The Sentry limited series as the first appearance of an unknown Stan Lee Silver Age hero. Marvel received help in perpetrating the hoax from comic book magazine Wizard: The Guide to Comics when they reported the discovery of “lost” Sentry sketches by a forgotten artist named “Artie Rosen” (a nod to letterers Artie Simek and Sam Rosen who designed most of the Marvel mastheads of their era).
As you can probably tell by his regular JustUsBoys forum handle (Horny4JaredPadalecki), the Photoshop faker known as Sol definitely has favorite subjects. But since they are the likes of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, we don’t mind so much…
I always invite the artist to submit an artists statement about their process and inspiration so the quotes that follow are taken from a statement from Sol…
Back in the late 90’s, as a “young, hormone driven gay man, with a new found porn toy, aka, the internet”, Sol was bombarded with images of female celebrity nudes, but found that there wasn’t much in the area of free male fakes. So he took it upon himself to come up with something passable. Discovering Photoshop by sheer accident, it’s toolset opened a whole new set of doors that the OCD perfectionist within could warp to his advantage. Since, this was driven by his own needs to see these images, the manips created were for celebs he found appealing. Celebs, he wanted to see naked, inspired by the “pure hotness in a male actor.”
Around 2 years ago he came across a manipulating group on Yahoo that did what he did… Erotic photomanipulations of Male Celebrities. They even have competitions. all for fun of course. That group has evolved into a restricted fraternity group over at Live Journal. Their challenges evoke more than just head swapping. (The first Winchesters pic at Sexy Sam/Dean Photo Manipulations are a prefect example of the kind of manipulations showcased there). That group has pushed Sol into “thinking outside the head swapping box” and looking for new ways to get the Celebs to do what they already do in his head.
Sol is unapologetic about his “overflow of Supernatural manipulations.” But Like I said, I certainly don’t fault him for his tastes.
I can’t seem to bring myself to apologize for that, I fell in love with Jared and couldn’t help but play and play and play with him, eventually bringing in Jensen to play along as well. Jared and Jensen just seemed to be the flavor of the moment for me. But if you’ve seen my flicker account, I do have other tastes as well. lol.
Sol has been active in the MaleCelebFakes threads since January 2007, but it took me awhile to amass enough variety for a gallery due to his crush on the Supernaturally sexy Winchester brothers. He’s on a short list of talented photomanipulaters whose work I patiently collect until I have a wide enough selection to fill an archive gallery.

UPDATE: Finally a surprise! Today’s addition to the New Avengers Roster is none other than Aunt Petunia’s favorite nephew, the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing himself! I’ll be interested to see the whys and wherefores on this… Has he had a falling out with his Fantastic family? or is Benjy just bored and looking to schedule a little extra “clobberin time” each week? He IS poker buddies with Luke and Logan so it’s not that odd, but what gets him on the team? Will the FF be making a Siege appearance? You’d think they would chime in.
Every day this week, Marvel has revealed a member of the new “New Avengers” title launching in June. But the roster hasn’t exactly been earth shaking as the line-up thus far includes only people who were already on, or heavily associated with the team. The biggest surprise is seeing Luke Cage’s wife Jessica Jones back in her retconned Jewel outfit. A fifth member will be revealed tomorrow so stay tuned for that update.
So thus far we have Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Jewel and The Thing as “New Avengers” and Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Woman and Hawkeye are “Avengers.”
So who does that leave to be the so-called “Secret Avengers?” Whose missing from these teams? Wasp, Steve Rogers (Cap in Avengers is wearing Bucky’s Cap outfit), Ms Marvel, Mockingbird, Vision, Hulkling, Wiccan, Speed, Patriot, Stature, Hawkingbird (I’ll keep calling her that until she becomes the Taskmistresses she SHOULD be), Wonder Man, Arachne, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Amadeus Cho, Doctor Voodoo, Iron Fist, War Machine, She Hulk, Falcon, Black Widow, USAgent, Jocasta, Black Panther, Beast and Marvel Boy. Other suggestions included: Valkyrie, Nova and Moon Knight.
Or perhaps the “Secret Avengers” will be a team of Thunderbolt types led by Steve Rogers?

We have the Marvel Trinity (Captain America, Iron Man and Thor) back in action again, but will they be able to get along once The Siege is over? Captain America “died” because of the treatment he received from teammate Tony Stark. And when Thor resurfaced and found out what went on during Civil War he was equally displeased with Iron Man. Siege Aftermath: Avengers Prime is a 5 issue miniseries starting in June from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alan Davis that takes place in the days following “Siege,” but before May’s new “Avengers” series launches.
In the current event miniseries, “Siege,” they will be forced to temporarily put aside their differences and work together to stop the villainous Norman Osborn and his ally Loki from gaining ultimate power. But what happens after that? Thor, Steve and Iron Man all find themselves pulled into an adventure that places them down in some unfamiliar territory and forces them to rely on each other as they get to the bottom of things.
Hmmm, why have they blacked out the outfit Steve Rogers is wearing???
The SIEGE has ended and taken its toll on both sides of the battle field. The event seven years in the making has claimed many lives, and in this, its final chapter, a universe comes together to mourn (CLASSIFIED). The shocking death that ended the fight and gave birth to a new Heroic Age is remembered as a writer (CLASSIFIED) returns to lead the farewells.
The 2nd image is the cover to another title chronicaling the aftermath of Siege… Fallen. The cover shows a number of heroes (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Ms. Marvel, and Black Widow?) holding up the corpse of a well-coiffed mystery figure (that looks like Sentry or maybe Quicksilver).

I’m a little confused as to why there are 2 “Ultimate” titles (this new one and the current Ultimate Comics Avengers)… are either of them a limited series?
If only a few super heroes survived the Ultimatum — who is left to become the next super powered team to be reckoned with? The NEW Ultimates! With Thor gone, Loki takes his revenge unleashing the worst of Asgard on Earth. Iron Man must gather the heroes for their biggest Ultimates adventure yet. But who has made the final cut? And who can’t be trusted?
The Ultimates face evil once again and you’ll never guess the new enemies they’ll find…or should we say old friends? Superstar creators, JEPH LOEB and FRANK CHO (in his Ultimate Comics debut!) bring you the new face of the Ultimate line in NEW ULTIMATES: THOR REBORN!
I’m even MORE confused as to why the “Power Man” on the “villain variant” cover looks like he has mugged Stonewall from the Secret Warriors for his super-leather-stud outfit. Luke Cage has never been one for opera gloves in the past, would he start now?

While I’ve been saying all along that we’d end up with White Lanterns… I must admit I didn’t anticipate who would wear the first white ring. Sinestro! I’d have kept it under my hat but DC already let the cat out of the bag with the recently released covers to Green Lantern #52.
This has me thinking all KINDS of interesting thoughts about what Brightest Day might be about… Sinestro was the ultimate law and order type… to the point of murderous fascism. Will GL and the rest of the New Guardians let him keep that level of power? What would he do with it? Will he lead the DCU into a Platinum Age or a Police State?
What if Brightest Day is Sinestro and a fascist White Lantern Corps goose stepping across the cosmos? I think that is FAR more likely than him becoming a genuine force for good. We’ll have to wait and see if he gets to keep the new bling.
Once called “the most influential creator of gay pornographic images,” Finnish Artist Touko Laaksonen (8 May 1920 – 7 November 1991), is better known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland. His extraordinary stylized homoerotic fetish art were a great influence on gay culture of the late twentieth century.
Tom of Finland was a prolific artist, producing over 3500 illustrations featuring heavily muscled gay archetypes such as lumberjacks, motorcycle policemen, sailors, soldiers, bikers, and leather-men engaged in the animalisticly fleeting intimate moments preceding or during sex. His hunky illustrations usually wear very little and what they DO wear is always nice and tight and generally partially removed.
At the age of 19, he moved to the country’s capital Helsinki to study advertising, where he also started secretly drawing homoerotic images for his own pleasure. Conscripted into the Finnish Army in February 1940, second lieutenant Touko Laaksonen served as an anti-aircraft officer during the Winter War. In 1945, he returned to studies at the art college, but later attributed much of his fetishistic interest in uniformed men to encounters he had with men in army uniform while serving.
His career as Tom of Finland began In 1956 when the conservative social climate prompted Laaksonen to use the anonymous name “Tom” when he submitted drawings to the influential American magazine Physique Pictorial. His image of two log drivers and a voyeuristic 3rd man was published on the cover and others appeared within the Spring 1957 issue, and the editor credited them to “Tom of Finland.”
From the late-1950s to the early 1960s, his style was definitely cramped by the U.S. censorship codes restricting depiction of “overt homosexual acts.” The outlawing of gay pornography by the conservative and homophobic social culture of the era forced homoerotic publications to disguise themselves as “fitness magazines” until the 1962 Supreme Court case of MANual Enterprises v. Day decreed nude male photographs were no longer obscene. The pretense of being about exercise and fitness was quickly dropped and the newfound freedom allowed Tom of Finland and his contemporaries to publish much more explicit drawings featuring characters with extremely exaggerated anatomical gifts.
Laaksonen’s vision was influenced by the stylized masculinity of the biker subculture that emerged after WWII. Prior to this era, society’s image of gay men was mostly limited to stereotypical effeminate sissies seen in Vaudville and early films. The art of Tom of Finland and his predecessors/influences (George Quaintance and Etienne) and followers both energized and commercialized an underground leather counter-culture which emerged after World War II and was most popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The clothing, styling, and persona adopted by large numbers of gay men of the time illustrate the power of his work. Celebrities such as Glenn Hughes of The Village People and others who sported the Castro Clone look might well have just stepped out of a Tom of Finland drawing. Though the iconic leatherman style has evolved some since the height of its popularity in the mid 80s, Laaksonen’s images are still en vogue and appear regularly in today’s gay publications and on the walls of our bars, clubs and remaining bathhouses.
Not only has Tom of Finland’s work has been shown in a number of collections in museums internationally, inspired a documentary, and influenced leading artists of his time such as Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pierre et Gilles and countless film makers, but it has also been appropriated by a number of other artists to inspire new works. Most notably in the late 1970s, Laaksonen’s art graced t-shirts featured at SEX, a popular store run by clothes designer Vivienne Westwood and partner Malcolm McLaren.
Durk Dehner and Touko Laaksonen founded the Tom of Finland Company in 1979 to help Tom control pirating of his work. When the AIDS epidemic hit the gay subculture hard in 1984, the Tom of Finland Foundation was formed as a non-profit educational archive to catalog, preserve, restore, and exhibit erotic art created by homoerotic artists many of whom were stricken and sought ways to preserve their works for posterity.
Tom of Finland’s artwork affected his contemporaries and every homoerotic artist who followed in his footsteps. Without his body of work where would the modern generation of homoerotic artists (Patrick Fillion, Ismael Avlarez, HvH, Carlos Garcia, Glenn Hanson, Michael Breyette, Ian Hanks and Josman to name a few) be? They all owe a debt of thanks to Tom of Finland.

Although the Queen of the Inhumans has had a number of looks over the years (especially recently as she stepped up to a more cosmic level), I must go on record as saying I really LOVE her latest look enough to PERSONALLY Photoshop out the teleporting dog and expert royal ninja.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m a card carrying gay geek, I’d say I’m not sure if its just that I’m a sucker for a gal with a plunging neckline and a fabulous hairdo. But despite the fact that this site is all about the cock, I do love Medusa’s new look! It’s regal, sexy, superheroey AND newly single all at the same time. So if Blackbolt IS dead, who would have the guts to come on to Medusa? Any ideas for her royal consort?
Here’s a stroll down memory lane for Mrs Black Bolt if you decide to judge he latest look negatively. I’m not singing the praises of the crotch jewel, but she’s definitely done worse.

Matchmaker matchmaker, make me a match…
In the latest issue of Wonder Woman (#41), Diana arranged a meeting between the king of the Gargareans known as Achilles a.k.a. Warkiller and a Real Estate agent. After Achilles makes an impressive entrance on his 2-trunked, 3-eyed flying elephant, he agrees to buy the property (which is apparently the Playboy Mansion) in exchange for many “buckets of gold.” Those well versed in their ancient Greek mythology will notice the similarity between the name of the real estate agent … Patrick Cleese and Achilles’ beloved Patroclus. It wasn’t lost on Achilles either. He voices gratitude to Diana for the set up and decides he isn’t alone in “Man’s World.”
The relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is a key element of the myths associated with the Trojan War. Its exact nature has been a subject of dispute in both the classical period and modern times. In the Iliad, it is clear that the two heroes have a deep and extremely meaningful friendship, but the evidence of a romantic or sexual element is equivocal.
Commentators from the classical period to today have tended to interpret the relationship through the lens of their own cultures. Thus, in 5th century BC Athens the relationship was commonly interpreted as pederastic. Contemporary readers are more likely to interpret the two heroes either as non-sexual “war buddies” or as an egalitarian homosexual couple.
Isn’t it sweet of Diana to set Achilles up with (I’m guessing) his true love reincarnated? Since she first announced his orientation, I was wondering how Gail Simone was going to work Achilles being gay into her storyline but now we know. I’m equally thrilled at the idea of the Playboy Mansion being their gay love nest.
Despite talk of casting an unknown as Steve Rogers in Captain America: First Avenger, The Hollywood Reporter has reported 6 familiar faces auditioning for the role of Steve Rogers this week: John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Mike Vogel, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter and Chace Crawford. Are any of them worthy of wielding Caps Shield?
I’m wondering if they plan to do Cap’s body with CG because although it is an attractive group, none of these boys have that Super Soldier Serum look. Click on the images below to see them fullsize AND read the accompanying captions about their professional history my thoughts on their suitability. Read all about them (captions appear under fullsize images) and then let me know about your thoughts on these candidates.
Apparently also considered but unavailable due to schedule conflicts were “Supernatural” stud Jenson Ackles and Garret Hedlund of the upcoming “Tron Legacy.” Other possibilities bandied about since the movie was announced have included Will Smith, Matthew McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, but they seem to have fallen by the wayside since the news about wanting an “unknown” leaked.

Farewell AGAIN Carol Danvers… I’m not sure which is more upsetting, the fact that Ms. Marvel is ending as of #50 or the fact that Supregirl ISN’T. I like Kara Zor-El but Always thought that Carol Danvers had MUCH more potential. I was SO happy to see Carol striving to become the #1 hero she became during the House of M. But unfortunately, this title never even came close to giving her that kind of rep. At least they let her reach issue #50.
Over-sized final issue! It’s Ms. Marvel and Mystique in a fight to the finish – and the ending will rock the world of Carol Danvers!
With her power level and rich history with the various franchises of the Marvel U (Captain Marvel, Avengers and X-Men), there is really no excuse for Ms. Marvel’s solo title being so mediocre. Let’s hope they don’t use it as an excuse to kill Carol off all over again. I don’t want to have to tell them not to let her rest in peace again.

Haven’t seen the Mandril in AGES! I remember him from the Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe – he worked with Nekra. Loved his “google it” comment!
SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!! The New Avengers are being hunted at the worst possible moment. The Hood has powered up his crew in ways that the Avengers can’t possibly defeat. But they must find a way in order to save Asgard from Osborn’s advancing forces.

Marvel has released Kaare Andrews character studies from Warren Ellis’ upcoming Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenisis miniseries.
This doesn’t really work for me AT ALL. Storm doesn’t look regal. She’s long past her punk phase and even when she had a mohawk, she avoided the mullet look and had more class than a tube top. UPDATE: OK the “mullet” is feather earrings – which STILL look ridiculous. Also, since when is Emma Frost a dwarf with a saggy bottom? To be shorter than Wolvie in THOSE heels she’d have to be 4 foot 10 or shorter. C’MON! And if this is an out of scale issue (from compositing images ar wrong heights), then her ass would just be bigger. I like the top half of Armor’s costume but not the clamdiggers / tennis shoes combination OR the Michelin Tire Man version of her armor. I mean REALLY.
