The Midnighter is HOT for Apollo and NOT shy about it!
The burgeoning DCnU reromance between The Midnighter and Apollo is starting to heat up. In Stormwatch #6, as Apollo saves a grateful Midnighter from a particularly nasty fate, The Midnighter looks up dreamily and says “GOD YOU’RE HOT.” There has never been a truer gay geek moment. If any of you were playing mid-air dude-in-distress in the arms of shirtless Apollo I don’t know if you (or I) would have the balls to say it, but we’d ALL be thinking it. Since he’s the “damn Midnighter” of course he’d say it. Adorable cocky bastard probably gave Apollo’s ass a squeeze off panel when he said it too.

We’ve had a number of wonderful new LGBT characters and relationships spotlighted in many high profile series in the past few years, but for some reason seeing these two getting together in the same continuity as their original analogues fills me with more gay geeky joy than any of them. In their previous incarnation, not only were Midnighter and Apollo respectively the most dangerous and powerful members of The Authority, but they were very much the HEART of the team. This exchange between the two tells us we can expect open flirtation during their hopefully prolonged courtship. I wonder how long it will take for them to tie the knot and adopt Jenny Quantum (Midnighter is already acting parental)?

Midnighter’s pride and ownership of his feelings brings a tear to my eye. I remember being a kid and thinking the same thing when Superman would scoop up or save a non-flying hero. I can’t imagine being that kid today and reading this. I’ll second it. Truest gay geek moment – tho is it a nod to the Authority? I seem to remember a similar exchange, but I could be imagining it. Any Authority scholars out there? My issues are in storage.

Just noticed something… where is Midnighter’s chinspike in the 3rd panel?
And YES it is a Damned good scene. The series is pretty good too. I’ve been following mostly for the courtship, but the concept of an alpha-level super team behind the scenes of the DCnU is a great one. I see a lot of potential with Stormwatch and hope each and every one of you will go out and buy a the first 6 issues or at least pick up the inevitable trade paperback. When i see a series with an obvious commitment to spotlighting gay characters I want to see it do well enough commercially to both thrive and influence future creators.

Great comic – the art and colouring on this is fantastic. The writing has real pace – SO much has happened over this opening arc already. I hadn’t been aware of these characters before this relaunch so I’m enjoying this flirting for the first time. I imagine there will be some problems thrown in the way of these two guys – but don’t most TV shows stay good when the main couples DON’T get together? When they get together and are happy, that’s when some of the tension and drama disappears.
I look forward to continuing to see this play out.
