Chronicle – Does absolute power corrupt absolutely?
With last year’s Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern and X-Men First Class all big news in 2011, and Avengers, Amazing Spider Man and Dark Knight Rises poised for blockbuster status in 2012, we can expect more original indie comic book themed movies as well. The first such film of 2012 is Chronicle… a new comic book indie movie due out February 12.

“What are YOU capable of?” is the question asked by Chronicle promos. Three high school buddies learn to control strange new abilities. At first they use them for their own amusement, but when their powers grow and the boys move past pranks, things take a darker turn…

Since the semi-recent advent of the Comic Book Movie as the en vogue action genre of the moment a number of indie Super Hero films have surfaced, but most (4 out of 6) featured an ordinary yet mentally unstable person WITHOUT super-powers who dons a costume to fight injustice. Griff the Invisible (2012 – starring Ryan Kwanten), Super (2010 – starring Rainn Wilson), Defendor (2009 – Starring Woody Harrelson), Paper Man (2009 – with Ryan Reynolds), Special (2006 – starring Michael Rappaport) and Sidekick (2005). With real power effects, Chronicle is working on a different level than those films, but like them it offers viewers a gritty real world view of events traditionally only seen on the 4 color page. I’m definitely adding Chronicle to my short list of eagerly anticipated movies for 2012. Although the pretty cast (Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Friday Night Lights’ Michael B. Jordan) looks a little Twilighty, the dark story and Paranormal Activityesque found footage style in which the film is shot have piqued my interest. Chronicle looks like it could be an original take on how possessing a power like Omega-level telekinesis might change an ordinary human in the “real world.”

This looks wicked interesting. We’re so used to seeing everyday folks who get powers go all Super Hero, but rarely do we see them become Dark Phoenix. Definitely adding it to my que!
