DCnU Wonder Woman: Daughter of Zeus & Hippolyta?

A number of things have changed as a result of “Flashpoint.” But a change of parentage seems a bit out of the realm of possible things that would be changed by a new timeline – but whatever – artistic license. DC announced at TheSource that the DCnU Wonder Woman is the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus – and these are not the supportive loving Gods of the Perez relaunch. The Gods of the DCnU are closer to the capricious, petty and often vicious Gods of myth. And in this new Wonder Woman title – which is being billed a more of a “horror” book with mythological monsters, they have little value for human life.

Readers should expect the unexpected in this edgier, horror take on the superhero genre and the king of the gods will ensure that nothing goes as planned for his defiant daughter.

So Wonder Woman was no longer sculpted out of the clay of Themyscira by Hippolyta to have Aphrodite place a soul in the baby? Instead she’s a demi-goddess like Hercules (who would now be a half-sibling as are Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus). We can be sure of one thing. This squarely places step-mom Hera as a big bad of the book – she’s never been a big fan of Zeus’ bastards. Which is probably the impetus for the change of origin. I can see why they would go in this direction. In issue 1 Diana rescues a woman pregnant with a child of Zeus from a threat sent by Hera… Setting Wonder Woman on the path to learn her true origins.

I would have made Diana the granddaughter of Zeus. Hippolyta DID have a mythological liaison with Hercules (a kiss before dying – in the myth, he left her dead, not pregnant). Having him as a dad would be enough to draw Hera’s ire while sticking to the myth.
