The first of the DCnU’s “New 52″ – Justice League #1

I went to Whatever Comics at Midnight on Tuesday to pick up my copies of Flashpoint #5 (first, last and only FP title I bought) and Justice League #1. My thoughts? It was OK. Didn’t love it – didn’t hate it. It will take more to form a full opinion. My initial reaction is under the preview images…

I’ll admit, I didn’t follow Flashpoint at ALL, but the final issue was still just about what I expected – it tied the miscellaneous details of that event up and explained how a “new” continuity was formed (with the aid of a mysterious unnamed purple hooded woman with glowing eyes and bad skin). It seems Barry Allen remembers the world of Flashpoint – but does he recognize that the world he’s returned to isn’t the same one that existed pre-Flashpoint?

OK. On to Justice League #1…

Lets talk about the art a sec. Personally I think Jim Lee’s brilliance is overstated. I loved his 90s X-Men at the time, but nowadays find his layouts a bit busy and think stylistically and creatively he is about 1/10 the artist of Phil Jimenez (who, like George Perez is one of the few gifted artists who can give us a wildly detailed background that STAYS in the background). Lee’s backgrounds don’t recede and all that action gets hard to follow.

Now – the words… For some time now, I have felt Geoff Johns can do no wrong, so I’m giving this incarnation some time to brew, but I have to admit I’m disappointed that I wasn’t WOWED. The story didn’t advance much in 1 issue. Its really just Bats and GL getting to know one another and a peek at a pre-Cyborg Vic Stone. We saw no Wonder Woman, no Flash and no Aquaman. For what was supposed to be an earth-shattering, mind-blowing first look into the DCnU, they didn’t give us much. Would it have killed them to give us an oversize issue? We see a 1 panel shot of Superman, but if JL and Action Comics are the titles that take place “5 years ago,” why is he wearing his costume and not the t-shirt and cape we see on all the Action promos? Also from the last panel, it looks like Supes still has the underwear on the outside of his tights – but they are blue? Either lose them or not, but making his red panties blue is stupid.

Any by the way… yes, I am alive! I’ve been swamped with the Buddies With Benefits 2012 Calendar, but am wrapping that up this week. I’ll be doing my best to make it up to you with new additions to some of my favorite gallery collections.
