Peter David’s X-Factor wins a GLAAD Media Award
Peter David’s excellent comic about mutant private detectives has won itself the 2011 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic for its portrayal of the romantic relationship between Rictor and Shatterstar. X-Factor was among the 2010 nominees as well, but was beat out by Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8, which was also nominated this year (for some reason).

Also nominated were… Avengers: The Children’s Crusade (by Allan Heinberg from MARVEL COMICS), Veronica (by Dan Parent from ARCHIE COMICS), Fogtown (by Andersen Gabrych from VERTIGO/DC COMICS) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (by Scott Allie, Brad Meltzer, Joss Whedon from DARK HORSE COMICS). I can see why most of this years nominees were on this short list – but the inclusion of Buffy TVS this year puzzles me. It was nominated last year for Buffy’s lesbian tryst with Satsu, but I don’t really recall any gay content since (except for a few suspect comments from Andrew).
Personally I think X-Factor deserved the award last year and I’d have given it to Veronica this year for the introduction of gay teen Kevin Keller to the conservative town of Riverdale. I LOVE Buffy Season 8, but the lesbian fling was just the usual titillating girl on girl action that straight fanboys enjoy so much. I don’t think it should be nominated.
