There ARE super gay BOYS at the Legion Academy!
Since Gravity Kid is such a hit with the gay constituency, I thought you guys might like a desktop pattern featuring the Legion Academy mancandy… so I made one – (click the image or this link to get the full size desktop iamge at 1600×1200 – AND IF U LIKE IT PLEASE Tweet, Facebook or reblog it!). Now, my question is… does he play for OUR team too?
A few panels from the Phil Jimenez (and Paul Levitz) Legion Academy launch in Adventure #523 have me wondering… has this out and proud creator snuck a few new gay boys into the Legion mythos? We’ve already seen some long-time lesbians officially recognized in the Legion roster, I’m sure Jimenez recognizes the need for some gay guys in the future too.
It’s pure conjecture based the way the cocky smirk above sets off my admittedly often unreliable gaydar AND on the above middle of the night panel where a half-clothed Gravity Kid (Tel Vole) discovers Comet Queen sneaking out and and equally shirtless Power Boy (Jedidiah Rikane) emerges from the same room to ask “what was that all about, Tel?” What do you think? a subtle hint? or is it all wishful thinking and purely in my head?
UPDATE: Apparently methinks I doth not project too much. Avventure comics #528 included this panel after Power Boy learns he’ll be heading off to join the Science Police after graduation – Gravity Kid consoles him and promises to come bring him home if he doesn’t like it there.

In Adventure #529 Gravity Kid walks away from the team and tells them he’s going to join Power Boy because the Science Police have a “TRAILING SPOUSE” spot for him. So not only are Tel and Jed a couple – they may in fact be the first gay married couple we’ve seen in the 30th Century!

I hope not. Comics need more gay characters. Gay comic book fans are the best and should be catered too 100% haha

I get the humor and I’m really not sure wha the intent was. But I do think that as co-plotter and as both a long-time Legion fan and publically “out” artist at DC and Marvel, Jimenez gets the importance and sees it is not REALLY catering to us to have some LGBT representaion in the next millennium of the DCU in addition to lesbians (which straight fanboys generally have little problem with for SOME odd reason). I could see him writing in that relationship. The only wrench I see in it is teacher/student ethical problem – unless Power Boy met him and then got him into the school. Looking forward to seeing these characters develop over the next year.

Great desktop BTW!
I agree that it’s important that there be natural gay characters in a setting where there is no drama about it. If your are right this is really awesome.

some have commented that Gravity Boy is based on RJ Danvers… does anyone know if this is fact?

I thought the same thing when I saw these panels. I mean, it could be a dorm they’re emerging from and they’re both ready for bed. But it does seem fairly intimate. Either way, I am digging the Legion Academy stories a lot.

I want Timber Wolf to be gay, because I like hairy guys.
I’d also love to trade links with your blog, even though mine is not super-heroey, you may like it …
