Nation-X #4 of 4 enter DOOP?

Um why isn’t Doop dead? He died in the last X-Statix adventure and then Polaris and Havok of the X-Men encountered a Doop-like entity they called Daap that crashed to Earth from outer space. Havok eventually blasts it to pieces. Its amorphous jelly-like remains began to knit itself back together and flew off, but where did he go and how did he get to Utopia? The Marvel Handbook officially states that Doop and Daap ARE in fact the same being.

All the pieces fall into place as this final issue concludes with a bang! Namor has never taken orders from anyone before, so why does he take them from Cyclops? Where does Emma get all those Jimmy Choo’s? And when a mystery strikes Utopia, who does Cyclops send to solve it? DOOP!

  1. I’m actually stupidly pleased they’re bringing back Doop. (And wondered what was up with all of that Daap stuff.) It’s even better they really got the Allreds and Peter Milligan together again.

As goofy looking a creature he is (and a lot like that Magic Pickle thing) he really did help me buy into comics as a world-building thing. Even if they couldn’t coordinate about whether or not major disasters would be reflected across different character franchises I liked it when some artists used to slip in Doop keychains or the plushie pillow he once appeared as in Runaways.

Plus this whole Nation X miniseries actually seemed like a pretty good excuse of mashing up their desire to tell indie-style anthology stories about D-list mutants but having them vaguely in continuity so I can’t wait for the trade.

I semi-enjoyed this mini series. I loved the idea of an anthology that focused on the other remaining mutants that usually were pushed to the sidelines on the other X-comics. But, I didn’t feel that it lived up to its potential. I know they only had a limited number of pages, but I felt the stories could’ve been fleshed out a bit more. And yeah, the Doop story in particular was very odd. But what do you expect from a creature like Doop? I hope that this kind of thing continues at Marvel in some capacity.
