DC continues to wow us with revelation after revelation this week. Today they announced a new Legion of Super Heroes title will be hitting shelves this spring! Written by former Legion scribe, Paul Levitz (Great Darkness Saga), the new series is illustrated by “rising artist” Yildiray Cinar (Noble Causes, Teen Titans). The piece was short on details but included all these wonderful images, including a sketch version of the cover to the first issue and studies for the founding Legionnaires and the HQ clubhouse. Paul spoke to io9 about the project

Levitz had THIS to say about returning to familiar Legion territory:

It’s such fun to be back in the future, blowing up planets, undoing Legion marriages, revealing unrevealed factoids, and starting improbable new relationships. If there’s a better job in comics than writing the Legion, with its vast cast and creative opportunities, I’ve never held it.

The Legion has had SO many reboots that I’m looking forward to a new version based on the Legion we were reintroduced to in Action Comics… Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes. Now that they’ve established the various reboots as Legions from alternate Earths, we can get back to what has happened to the original Legion since we stopped watching! Lets hope we see the relationship between Element Lad and Shavaugn Erin again. Perhaps we’ll learn more about Dawnstar’s girlfriend?

  1. “It’s such fun to be back in the future, blowing up planets, undoing Legion marriages, revealing unrevealed factoids, and starting improbable new relationships.”

This is precisely why I don’t read Legion titles any more. I LIKE continuity! Why in the hell should I care about people and places that will disappear in 2 year’s time and be replaced (yet again) by something else?

  2. I wish the boy characters had sexier costumes :-(

  3. I am so excited about this – I really hope my favorite Legion member, Dream Girl, gets alot of “screen” time

I really don’t like Saturn Girl with the short hair…ick

Timber Wolf was hot in the last series but he doesn’t look sexy in new preview art.

  4. Wow. They are launching the tiltle again?? I read it a couple of years and I enjoyed it, but I get tired of all these relaunches and then taking it away again if the title doesn’t do well. Oh well, the art looks good.

I also like continuity to remain stable, but it never bothered me that much when they rebooted the Legion for some reason. As a comic, it is unique in that it is set in the distant future, so it makes sense that minor changes in present continuity would have greater ramifications in the future. That said it did sometimes piss me off at first when they ignore an established relationship or take an established character and radically alter them (Princess Projectra/Sensor). I said at first because sometimes I grew to love these changes (again Princess Projectra/Sensor – I actually prefer the big snake with tiny robot arms to the imperial bitch of the last version or the bride of Karate Kid in the original continuity).

I’m hoping the re imagining of Legion history as seen in Legion of 3 Worlds (explaining that the various “reboots” that were chronicled in the vastly different volumes of the title were actually the Legions of alternate earths) really means that the Legion of general DCU continuity is the one we saw recently in action comics AND is an adult version of the Legion as seen in the 60’s70s before any/all reboots. Who can tell me the general state of THAT incarnation of the Legion before it was rebooted the first time? Who was doing whom and such.

Now it remains to be seen if the Lightning Lass/Shrinking Violet, Invisible Kid/Chemical King and Element Lad/Shvaugn Erin gay relationships are part of the past continuity for the new Legion status quo. I plan to write the letter column the very first issue and ask about those relationships and I encourage you all to do the same.

  6. “Undoing Legion marriages” – intriguing. But, oh no, Paul Levitz can’t mean undoing Lightning Lad/Saturn Girl, can he!??

And yes, it will be interesting to see what new relationships transpire – and which ones turn out to be gay (or remain gay from previous versions).
