Gail Simone comes home to Birds of Prey this Spring!
Big news this week at DC’s blog. First they announce the biweekly Brightest Day series and a few of the titles that will bear its imprint, then more details and art for the upcoming Rise and Fall, THEN they announce another bi-weekly, this time starring the Justice League International. This morning they announce GAIL SIMONE will be writing a new relaunch of her beloved Birds of Prey THIS SPRING!!!!! And it’s only Wednesday – what will they have for us tomorrow and Friday?!?!?!
While DC Comics typically thrives on the strength of its universally-recognized icons, Simone used her previous run on “Birds of Prey” to take marginal, perhaps even marginalized characters, and transform their exploits into the most compelling ensemble book in DC’s stable — with an all-ladies roster, no less.

I have the entire run of the first series and was very bummed when it was canceled. Oddly enough I was just talking to Rich (owner of Whatever in the Castro) about missing Birds of Prey. Merely ask and ye shall receive!
Hmmm guesses on who the blacked out flying winged figure in the background is? Stephanie Brown as Batgirl? a new heroic ID for Cassandra? Bat Woman? Dove? Flamebird? Bette Kane would REALLY fit nicely with the b/c-list characters that Gail elevates to the next level, so I hope its her. And then who is the silhouetted hulking figure below the flying woman?

Are the silhouette’s correct or there to mislead us? I love your idea for Flamebird – I LOVE HER!!

Yay Huntress! She is who got me interested in DC in the first place. She looks gorgeous.
I would love to see Omen/Lilith return from the dead and be a Birds Of Prey.
Excited this is back

Silhouettes are GENERALLY correct – companies often black out a character on a cover if…
1. the character has not been introduced
2. the character is about to undergo some kind of change (costume persona etc) that has yet to be published.
3. the company wants to get people like you and me talking about their title and encouraging guesses.

While true, fanboi, there have been a couple JLA covers which have had silhouettes purposefully altered to maintain a level of surprise…
According to Gail’s Facebook – one of the silhouettes is a guy ?!

I think the JLA covers you mentioned would fit nicely in the category of “the company wants to get people like you and me talking about their title and encouraging guesses” They don’t surprise us just for the sake of surprising and almost ALWAYS eventually reveal the real version of a cover with blacked out figures once closer to release. There have been a few cover that left a mystery on the cover you had to read to book to answer, but in those cases, the mystery figures were more central to the layout so I’ll put money down that they’ll eventually reveal the real cover. Generally its not a surprise anyone wants to maintain any longer than it takes to get us talking about their book.
I figured the hulking figure might be a guy… perhaps Creote, Savant or (I don’t know why this is ocurring to me aside from Gail’s tendancy to co-opt forgotten characters) the Monolith? Though I hate to point out the silhouette looks like Darkseid… not that I think he’s a potential team member – I’d have to say very unlikely. So who is it?

I hope it’s Creote. I forgot about him and would to see him as a series regular

I’m holding out for Dove. The totally underused “comics ex machina” Dawn Granger needs and deserves the spotlight for a change.

love it, but I hope she still work on Diana

OMG! I’m so excited about these title coming back. I loved the BoP series before it was cancelled. Gail is a awesome writer and is doing a fantastic job with the Secret Six and I’m glad to see they are relaunching the title. Love the art too!!!
