Chris Colfer - GLEE's out and proud Kurt Hummel

GALLERY UPDATED: Continuing the GLEE BOYS series… although Kurt is a bit removed from the usual beefcake showcased here, he is included because this boy rocks. GLEE”s resident theatrical homosexual Kurt Hummel is probably the first overly fabulous gay character I’ve truly enjoyed in awhile. QaF’s Emmet Honeycutt grew on me over the seasons but I may have been a wee bit partial because he (the actor not the character) was the freshman roommate of a college buddy. Kurt rules!

I LOVE GLEE!!! Loved seeing Kurt’s Dad force them to have an audition. I wish he’d gotten the solo. He would have if he hadn’t thrown the tryout. But I can see why he did it.

Talk about an overachiever… While Colfer was a student in Clovis California he was heavily involved with the Speech & Debate program, where his oratory skills earned "many speech and debate Champion titles", the drama club, the FFA, "was president of the Writer’s Club, editor of the school’s literary magazine, AND captain of Destination ImagiNation." As a high school senior, Chris wrote, starred in, and directed an original gender bender spoof of "Sweeney Todd" entitled "Shirley Todd."

Colfer’s own real life experience with high-school theatre came in quite handy on the GLEE set. Chris was denied the chance to perform "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked because it is generally sung by a woman. On the show, "Kurt’s" very cool dad threatens to sue until he gets an audition. Colfer’s own happy ending was that his grandmother, who is a minister, arranged to have him sing the song in her church.

Colfer’s high vocal range was featured in the episode, in which Kurt shows he is capable of singing a High F (which is unusual for a man) but throws his audition to spare his father further ridicule.

Chris orginally auditioned for the role of wheelchair-bound Artie which went to Kevin McHale. But the casting directors were SO impressed with Chris COlfer that they wrote the Kurt Hummel character into the show as a vehicle for him. I hope he goes far!

  1. Wow! Thanks for posting! I love this show and I loved the song on Wednesday and story that night. It keeps getting more in depth with the characters. Thanks!

  2. I really dig this song. A version is on my ipod :-)

That GLEE was like three great episodes in one. Way too good!
    I love TV.
I love Kurt, but Rachel’s Defying Gravity was better. More drama and depth in her performance.
Also, she looks exactly like Idina Menzel who originated the role of Elphaba in Wicked. Exactly.

I love that song too. The GLEE version cut all the cool line like “And nobody in all of Oz — No Wizard that there is or was – Is ever gonna bring me down!”
That’s kinda the coolest part of the song. Also, it’s a bit of a duet with Kristin Chenoweth. It would have been funny to have seen her and Rachel doing it together.

  4. i hate to be the asshole that says this. but that was really, objectively very bad. i love this website and it always links to quality material so i am assuming this was a joke and we’re all supposed to laugh. especially as it is wedged between x-men and wolf hudson. but i think i mean, really? someone has this on their ipod? i feel bad i dont get it, is it for glee or is he just that gay? do we reward this sort of stuff? gayness but not quality gayness? i dont know. whats happenings!

I personally think “Kurt” is quality gayness. I wouldn’t go as far as adding him to my Ipod, but I think the character is great and thought the version without him intentionally missing the high note was notable and gave me an excuse to add to my boys of GLEE series.

I think Rachel’s audition was technically better – but think Kurt singing it for one of their big numbers would have been great.

Was Chenoweth Glinda in the original production?

I Love Glee. I love Kurt, yes a bit stereotypical, but solid out and proud.

    Off topic or no. Thanks!
