X-Men Origins: Iceman
The origin of onetime Northstar man-crush (no he didn’t get anywhere. Maybe if he tried a six pack) Bobby Drake, A.K.A. ICEMAN! See the small town beginnings that helped forge the coolest mutant of them all! X-Men Origins: Iceman is a one-shot written by gay playwright Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (STEPHEN KING’S THE STAND) with art by fan favorite Phil Noto.

A comment sent me looking for more details on Roberto Aguirre Sacasa… in 2006 he received a GLAAD Media Award nomination (Outstanding New York Theater) for his play Golden Age and the prestigious Harvey Award (Best New Talent) for his work on Marvel Knights 4. His plays include Based on a Totally True Story, Bloody Mary, Rough Magic, Dark Matters,[3] Good Boys and True, The Mystery Plays, and Say You Love Satan. He is also one of the writers of the HBO hit series Big Love.

Interesting. Should be worth a look.

Aguirre Sacasa’s one of their gay writers right? Ever since X2 it seems like Bobby has been the LGBTIQIQA subtext character even if they never actually do play that plot up. (Well I’ve heard in the 80s he once dated an amorphous cloud being that took on both genders sometimes?)
Anyway, I’d like to see them actually go anywhere with that. Considering how of all the original five I think he’s had the most screwed up relationships (even the blue furry cat version of Beast has gone through more stable relationships and that was even with his own “maybe-but-not-really-gay” subplot) and it would be nice if they were a bit more definitive one way or another.
Plus it’s not like anyone’s doing anything with the character from what I can remember so him being closeted would be an actual story direction. But barring that unlikely event I’m okay with allegory.

Is Bobby Drake supposed to be in his underwear in front of the mirror? I hope not. Cuz those are some ugly-ass underwear! Did he steal them from his grandpa? I love Phil Noto’s art, but Phil, you gotta give us some good underwear. I’m sure Roberto Aguirre Sacasa has some ideas.

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Mr.
Aguiree Sacasa at the last CAPE he attended here in Dallas – genuinely a nice, gracious person and a wonderful writer.
