How to “disguise your girly son as a normal kid”

How To Find A Masculine Halloween Costume For Your Effeminate Son… I love the Onion. But I’m not sure. I can’t help laughing, but with them the question is never should I be offended, but just how much should I be offended. This “news” clip from the Onion News Network offers practical suggestions on how to keep your “lady boy” from prancing around dressed as a ballerina at Halloween.

The whole thing is just so wrong, but I still laughed my ass off. I couldn’t help it. And don’t forget when choosing a masculine costume to not choose one “co-opted by the gay community like fireman, cop or cowboy or you’ll just look like a stripper.” :) But part of me worries about those who don’t know it’s a joke and rush out to Barnes and Noble so they can look to Anna Stevenson, author of “Actually He’s a Boy a How to Manual for Parenting an Effeminate Child” for words of wisdom. Scary! Happy Halloween!

Tell me Shatterstar… do you like gladiator movies?

I love Peter David’s writing and with his milestone issue #50 he did an excellent job of tying up not only ALL the loose threads he’s been dangling not just for the past 8 issues or so (Summers Rebellion, unevil Fitzroy, Cortex, incontinent Doctor Doom), but also the ones that have been out there since the beginning of the series (finally the definitive answer to what IS the story with Layla Miller?). I don’t want to spoil anything, but I do wonder if that’s what happens to Layla, where does she go from there (or then)? I have to admit it felt a bit rushed and tidy to have it all dropped in our laps with a lovely anniversary bow on it, but I’m eagerly anticipating what happens next!

Worlds and times collide in this double-sized conclusion to the year long storyline that has revitalized X-Factor. Will the Summers Rebellion triumph as is supposed to happen…or will it be derailed? Will Madrox make it back to his own time? Will Siryn, Monet and the rest of the team have their final showdown with Cortex? Will we actually learn just how it is that Layla Miller knows stuff? Will someone die?

X-Factor #50 X-Factor #50 X-Factor #50 X-Factor #50
X-Factor #50 X-Factor #200

You probably remember the uproar the RicShatty kiss caused from character creator Rob Liefeld. At the time X-Factor writer Peter David handled Liefeld’s reaction with grace and aplomb. Peter David made a number of humorous comments aimed at Liefeld and he’s stuck to his guns on at least one of them.

In a discussion over at Robot6 (which by the way mentioned QueerSUPE yesterday!!!), Peter David decided that he would have Guido ask “Tell me Shatterstar… do you like gladiator movies?” as a reference to the classic film Airplane in which Captain Oveur makes similar suggestive remarks to the young boy visiting the cockpit. I suppose you should expect that when entering anyplace called “The Cockpit.”

In a preview of X-Factor #200 (due in December) which relocates X-Factor Investigations to NYC to find out why “the Invisible Woman has Vanished, he did just that.

Psylocke #1 of 4 – PLUS A Girl Named Hope Part 1!

I’ve been a fan of Psylocke since she first joined the X-Men as prim and proper English lady Elisabeth Braddock. Way back when, I picked up Alan Davis’ trade paperback of her introduction in Captain Britain from the Marvel UK imprint. So I loved her BEFORE Jim Lee turned her into a dangerous scantily clad sword wielding Asian ninja – which only improved her! I was sad to see her die and glad to see her resurrected, but again bummed to see her Exiled and left in limbo. So when she returned to the X-Men after a brief mind-controlled flirtation with the dark side I was ready to see her take center stage again… I didn’t have to wait long!

Psylocke has returned to the X-Men! Following the defeat of Madelyne Pryor and her Sisterhood, Psylocke travels to Japan to re-inter her former body in its proper resting place. But when a swarm of Hand ninjas attack Psylocke and do the unspeakable under orders from Matsu’o—the assassin originally responsible for transplanting Psylocke’s mind into the body of an Asian ninja—Psylocke determines that Matsu’o is one loose end that can no longer be left unresolved. It’s a tale of carnage and revenge, brought to you by superstars Chris Yost (X-FORCE) and Harvey Tolibao (AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE)!

Also Psylocke #1 kicks off a 4 part backup story by Duane Swierczynski and Steve Dillon (Preacher, Punisher) that will set about the return of Cable and the girl known as Hope Summers to the X-Men in the present, just in time for X-Men: Second Coming in Spring 2010! A Girl Named Hope runs through Psylocke #1, Dark X-Men #1, X-Men Legacy #230 and X-Force #22.

X-Men: A Girl Named Hope begins the most shocking change to the X-Men you can imagine! Will Hope save or damn mutantkind? What is Cable’s agenda? The answers begin in X-Men: A Girl Named Hope!

New Batman and Robin foe The Flamingo – Is he Gay? Bi? Metrosexual? or just European?

Now I hate to be the one falling for stereotypes, but I have to call one when I see one and The Gotham arrival of the pink-clad, fussy and fastidious yet fabulously ferocious new bat-foe known as the Flamingo smacks of the “amoral aristocratic bitchy queen type.” I’m not sure if Morrison would be that obvious, but maybe. We haven’t had a good gay Batman villain in awhile (now that Captain Stingaree and the Cavalier appear to be out of commission), so its good to be part of Bat’s Rogues Gallery. I still prefer to see new LGBT characters pop up on the side of the angels, but I’ll take what we can get. Stay tuned to see what his story is… and where he got that awesome coat!

Brian Andersen’s Sex and the Superhero

Sex and the Superhero is a new CBG Comics release from writer Brian Andersen (SoSuperDuper, Reignbow and Dee-Va), artist Neftali Centeno and colors, letters and logo by Celina Hernandez. The first issue introduces the exploits of a close-knit group of 5 gay and lesbian superheroes living and loving in San Francisco. Among other things, the issue takes a humorous look at the age old question of "exactly what DOES the Invisible Woman see in Mr Fantastic?" I also especially enjoyed the scene with Cosmic Man and Lady Web – poking fun at the use of impossible cheesecake ass-first battle poses (HE’S TALKING TO YOU BENES). Other topics touched on include rabid-vaginophopia, sexual slumming, how to bed your nemesis, how to graciously accept thanks from a damsel in distress and of course… true love.

Sex and the Superhero is an entertaining read. much less "cute" than I expected. As someone who grew up having to defend reading comics to a very educated set of parents, I always steered clear of anything too cute or cartoony and thus missed out on a lot of really good indie comics. So I’m glad I took a step out of my box to give this a read.

Since this is a first issue and it’s not really a BANG POW ZAP kind of story, it focuses more on character relationships than battle action, but goes further (from what I understand) than previous Brian Andersen gay titles. Sex and the Superhero is FAR from pornographic but DOES have some sex scenes (naughty bits are tastefully blocked with capes – See Edna was right – those capes really DO get in the way!).

But don’t just take my opinion on it. Here are some thoughts from fellow gay geek blogger… The Gay Comic Geek!

My only negative thoughts are that I know vaginophobia is rampant among gay men, but I’d rather see it examined in a humorous way than just repeated for laughs. That and I’d like to see more variance in line weight on the inking. I also could have used one more panel with Cosmic Man’s sister for a punchline.

Gail Simone officially “outs” the mighty Achilles

It looks like DC is getting ITS Big Gay Powerhouse in the form of Wonder Woman’s male analogue. In a recent posting at the DCU Boards, Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone unceremoniously confirmed that Achilles, the leader of Zeus’ race of male counterparts to the Amazons (the Gargareans) is in fact a friend of Dorothy.

Achilles

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that Marvel has similar plans for Stonewall. I’ll add more images of Achilles here as I find them, so stay tuned.

So we know he’s gay now. The big question is… will he survive “Rise of the Olympian” to become a force in the DCU? Or is he a throwaway foe to be discarded after a single arc? Lets hope for the former. I’d like to get to know Achilles a little better.

C1R’s Latest Lockerroom Orgy – Gridiron Gangbang

I’ve been a bit tied up with setting up QueerSUPE but I want you guys to know I haven’t given up on the smut… So here you go! Last year cowboys were the gay porn archtype of the moment and this year its football players. C1R hops on the bandwagon with Gridiron Gang Bang – which is exactly what it sounds like… a full on locker room orgy with uniforms and pads.

Gridiron Gang Bang

When towel boy Vance Winter spends a little too long taking in the view of the locker room, the team bends him over and gives his ass a workout. Watch Vance get gang banged by the entire football team including C1R Exclusives Cameron Marshall, Johnny Hazzard, Jeremy Bilding and Mitchell Rock, Josh Griffin, Cameron Adams, Dayton O’Connor and introducing Spencer Whitman.

Daken-on-Hulkling action in DR: Young Avengers #5

Although we are in for some Daken-on-Hulkling action during the finale of the YA miniseries, Wiccan doesn’t have anything to worry about. Teddy really is true blue (er green) and immune to the pheremonal charms of Wolverine’s tattooed bisexual bad boy offspring. Now if only he can do something about the slashing claws.

So can the Young Avengers and those who would be Young Avengers form one big happy group? Can either of them live under Norman Osborn’s rules? Will blood out? Will guilt win? Will Speed and Coat or won’t they? It’s the end. And lots of terrible stuff happens. And everything ends in tatters.

I can’t wait to see where this leaves the Young Avengers gang. It’s been announced that creator Allen Heinberg has a YA project coming.

Calling all indie LGBT characters!

I’m looking to fill out the LGBT superlist with more non-DC or Marvel characters. My expertise definitely lies more with the spandex set so I’m going to need the help of the readers (that’s you guys). Only real criteria is that the character is somehow recurring (appearing in a title, series or serial story that had at least 4 parts – so while miniseries qualify, a one shot generally wouldn’t) – though exceptions may be made for some nominees so don’t let the criteria stifle you). Awesome comics writer Tim Fish (who famous for his Cavalcade of Boys gay comics and is writing the upcoming Northstar story in Nation-X #2) replied to QueerSUPE and mentioned that I should look into the following…

Oni Press titles: Scott Pilgrim series (title character Scott lives with and shares a bed platonically with a gay friend Wallace); Hopeless Savages (one of the sons is gay, handled beautifully. The whole Maria’s Wedding is centered around gay topic, relations.).

So if anyone has any images or additional info on these characters or can think of others that you feel belong on the A-Z list, Please comment and I’ll contact you about getting the images.

DC Superheros are in fashion at Bloomingdales

I was doing a bit of shopping at Bloomingdales here in San Francisco a few weeks ago and happened upon these fabulous new tshirts from their new collection commemorating DC Comics 75th Anniversary. Usually when you see comic book t-shirts, the art is somewhat generic and the shirts are not much better. These shirts sporting artwork by comic book legends like George Perez and Neal Adams on shirts by designers like John Varvatos are a step above the rest. A few are DEFINITE must haves for the chic gay geek… check em out!

Announcing QueerSUPE!!!

Once I realized what i had created with the A-Z LGBT Comic Book Character Superlist, I knew I had to go through on another idea I had, to create a 2nd blog that contains all the comic and other G to PG13 content I had accumulated since HnH began, but without the porn. And thus QueerSUPE was born. It took awhile to setup – but its LIVE! Please tell your friends!

QueerSUPE.com

If you love the comics stuff, but can’t surf HNH at work due to NSFW policies, you can catch up on your comics news during the day and then pop on to HnH when you get home for some smut. Any LGBT comics and pop culture related posts that are SFW will appear on both sites. The LGBT Superlist will also continue to live at both sites, but the version here at HnH will be expanded to include characters from explicit comics (Naked Justice, Guardians of the Cube, Ghostboy etc).

3 members of Goeff Johns’ JSA stand revealed!

If you are 1/2 the Geoff Johns fan that I am you are waiting on pins and needles for the January episode of Smallville entitled “Society.” Johns gave fans the following tidbits via Twitter…

Yes, Hawkman will have wings. And a big mace. Oh. And he and Green Arrow don’t get along. At all.

Michael Shanks just cannot get away from Egyptian symbology as he’s stepped away from the Stargate but into the harness of Hawkman, whose origin is deeply rooted in ancient Egypt. The actor playing Doctor Fate is another Stargate refugee… Brent Strait. The presence of Britt Irvin as Stargirl threw me – I was thinking abut the predecessors of the JLA in a mentoring role to Clark, not so much the modern legacy JSA members. I wonder if any of the other new blood will show up?

Hawkman - Carter Hall? or Katar Hol? Doctor Fate: Kent Nelson? or Hector Hall? Stargirl - Courney Whitmire
Michael Shanks will be Hawkman - and yes he'll have the wings Brent Strait will be Doctor Fate Brit Irvin will be Stargirl

I LOVED last season’s Legion episode. I would be overjoyed to see a spin-off from either that episode or this upcoming “Society.” I think both are rife with possibilities. Especially if they involve the mind of Geoff Johns. My only fear is him becoming a bigtime writer for TV and not having time for the red-headed bastard stepchild that is the comics industry. I’m talking to YOU Heinberg!

Joss Whedon’s Sugarshock gets its own title

Joss Whedon’s Sugarshack won the Eisner Award for Best Web Comic when originally presented in the first online issues of MySpace Dark Horse Presents. Now Whedon’s award-winning story gets its own comic!

Sugarshock tells the story of a rock band led by charismatic but crazy Dandelion Naizen, a hyperactive singer/songwriter possessed of a mean hatred of Vikings (don’t ask) and a mission for a secret government agency that may only exist in her head. But when her band, which includes a robot bass player, is enlisted in an intergalactic battle of the bands — emphasis on battle — Dandelion gets to prove herself as both singer and soldier.

Joss Whedon at his funniest and most hyperactive, with writing that bursts off the page in a way seldom seen in comics. Multiple Eisner Award winner Fabio Moon delivers the outrageous story with equal energy, as well as providing a fourteen-page look at his process, with never-before-seen character designs, page layouts, and promotional images.

This is a must check out book for Jos Whedon fans like myself. If you’d like to see the original award-winning webcomic… look no further! (just click)

You long time JLA readers might remember Blue Jay from his introduction. He was one of the Champions of Angor (a.k.a. the Justifiers, the Assemblers and the Meta Militia – a team of superheroes from the reality of The Extremists). During his stay with the JL a few fans speculated he was gay – probably because he was “just friends” with fellow extradimensional teammate Silver Sorceress.
