It really seems to be a big year for the undead. We have zombies and vampires all over the summer blockbusters, cosmic zombies plaguing the DCU and now the X-Men, X-Force and the New Mutants have to watch out for Selene and her gang of techno organic mutant zombies in a terrifying crossover from x-writers Chris Yost, Craig Kyle, Mike Carey, and Zeb Wells.

YES. Selene is back (and this time I’m sure – I’m not confused by Monet in a slutty leather outfit)! We’ve known that she had Blink at her right hand (though not how she is alive or how she hooked up with Selene) since we saw Selene at the end of X-Force #11 with 3 shadowed figures standing alongside her throne. ).

Selene with Wither, Blink and Emplate in X-Force #11

Even in shadow, Clarice Ferguson is unmistakable with her light purple legs and signature chartreuse costume. To Blink’s right looks to be Wither, and on Selene’s left is Emplate (from the oversize hands). She’s now gathered a group of mutants with life-draining powers. From last week’s Exodus preview we’ve learned she also has Dazzler’s half-sister Lois London now know as Mortis and former Acolyte Senyaka with her as well as whatever dead mutants that poor undead enslaved Caliban led her and smitten vampric thrall Eli Bard too.

As to what she’s after… well Selene wants to be a Goddess. And she’s always been more than willing, eager in fact to sacrifice thousands of souls to do it.

  1. She was always one of my fave characters back when there was only one X-Men comic and I felt for years that Marvel had wasted her by letting her sit on the sidelines or be used for trivial plots. I mean, she's a near goddess.

    Glad to see she's back.

Oh, and great blog. Keeps me right up to date with the mighty, magic world of Marvel!

it's that "near" Goddess thing that really bugs her. I've been a HUGE fan of Selene since she first appeared in New Mutants #9 and loved how the character has been developed into this immortal psychic vampire with delusions of godhood. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop since she absconded with Wither back in New X-Men #32.

  3. It's about time. She's been a bit of an also-ran all these years which always seemed a bit daft to me; I guess she's been biding her time. The only thing I'll miss in this plot is a spat between her and Rachel Summers; I always liked the interaction between those two.

I haven't followed her for a little while, stuff got complicated with her and she appeared in titles I didn't care for…

  5. Hey, that’s not Emplate in Selene’s entourage. That’s Senyaka, that “hand” is his psionic whip and he’s very bad-ass.

He, Blink, and the amazing Lois London are the only ones I give a toss about. But Selene’s recruiting those mutants has only brought her up a few notches in my book. Hopefully, they’ll remain intact after the event and become a really formidable team of X-Villains.

That may be Senyaka in the preview pages – but I swear that is Emplate to Selene’s left in the X-Force image. The figure in question has TWO empty symmetrical oversized hands, not one manifesting a whip. Also it looks like his legs, you can even make out his weird hose-like faceplate and Emplate showed up in the recent X-Men Legacy Annual. X-Men Legacy is one of the main titles in Necrosha. I’m sticking by my interpretation of the X-Force image. If I’m wrong we’ll see. But I think Emplate will end up being involved. If anything he may be being used by Selene indirectly, but I’d wager she has a more direct involvement in the timing of his return.

  7. Holy cow, I didn’t see that. I thought you were talking about the one-shot preview. Hmm, maybe Marvel thought it’d be a waste to use a good villain like Emplate (who has major potential) as a flunkie of Selene’s. I’m more excited for Mortis anyway.
