Joey Stefano was part of a 3 way tie for second place in the last Legendary Studs of Yore Poll. Expect to see Jake Andrews and Lane Fuller momentarily!
Legendary porn bottom boy Joey Stefano was born Nicholas Anthony Iacona, Jr. on New Year’s Day (against the odds, he shares that birthday with both his Father and Grandfather), 1968 to middle-class parents Helen and Nick Sr. He grew up a middle child (between older sister Linda and younger sister Tina) near Philadelphia in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Interviews with friends and associates revealed that in later life, Joey spoke of being molested by his namesake and father, Nick Senior. 15 year old Nick dropped out of High School in 1983, about the same time his father died. He ran away to Manhattan at 16 where he turned tricks to earn money for food and a quickly growing drug habit. In 1989, at the age of 21, Nicholas moved to Los Angeles where he quickly became a rising star in the then rapidly-expanding gay home video industry as Joey Stefano.
In a business where tops were glorified and bottoms were often a necessary part of the scenery, Joey Stefano defied the odds by making a name for himself as a sexually submissive but verbally demanding, insatiable bottom. He enjoyed a few years of fame and stardom but as often happens with porn’s flavors of the month (or year) his starlight began to dwindle and he tested as HIV positive in late 1990.
In the ealy 90’s, Stefano began a national tour aimed to improve his fortune, dancing stripping and escorting his way across the country, eventually catching the attention of Madonna at the height of her popularity. She included photos of Stefano in her 1992 coffee-table smut photo collection – SEX. His images were from a shoot at his old NYC haunt Gaiety Theatre (a gay male burlesque theater in Times Square, New York City for almost 30 years until it closed on March 17, 2005).
During his lifetime, he was the subject of rumors (some of them spread by himself) regarding his relationships with prominent entertainment industry figures who were known to be gay. At a May 1990 dinner and interview with Jess Cagle (Entertainment Weekly) and Rick X (Manhattan Cable TV’s "The Closet Case Show"), Stefano discussed an alleged series of "dates" with David Geffen, who at one point implored Stefano to quit using drugs.
After the videotaped interview appeared on Rick X’s show, OutWeek Magazine "outed" Geffen, who went on to proudly announce his homosexuality at an AIDS fundraiser.
Tragically, Joey Stefano died of an overdose of cocaine, morphine, heroin and ketamine on November 26, 1994 in the shower of a motel on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California at the age of 26. His body was returned to Pennsylvania where he was buried next to his father (supposedly at his request – which is odd if the molestation rumors were true) at Immaculate Heart Cemetery.
