Torchwood – Children of Earth
OMG – Forget what you know about Torchwood. Children of Earth changes everything. This 5 episode mini season is AMAZING! Turns, twists and major revelations abound. It is a grand telling of a mind-gripping concept.
I don’t want to reveal anything in the main text, but PLEASE feel free to get as spoilerific as you like with your comments.
The one thing I WILL go on record saying is that I totally had the wrong idea of what this was going to do to the Torchwood universe.
There is one detail about the story that I HATE!!! Once you’ve seen it you’ll know and once someone mentions it in comments I will rant about it like you won’t believe.
I haven’t found any official talk about what is next for Captain Jack Harkness, but he’s way too good a character to leave in limbo long. I hope they have something in mind for another season or miniseries or even a movie.

The whole "third season" was freaking spectacular. The only thing that disappointed me was the death of my favorite character from the beginning, Ianto. I actually shed some tears.

I CANNOT believe they killed Ianto! Not sure if it is true, but I read that he wanted to leave the show and they asked him to hold on until this epic. It really bummed me out – I was just remarking on how cool it was that there was a gay romance at the center of this totally mainstream world famous popular BBC sci-fi show. And then they killed Ianto. In a completely meaningless way. If he had to die, it should have been saving someone or doing something. In the end he was just one body of many and Ianto deserved better.

I read an article that said the writers needed someone to die… because how earth shattering the whole event was… it wasnt realistic to have the whole team be able to walk out unscathed…. I am still saddened they chose ianto though… but I guess the team is pretty small right now… I could of dealt with her husband biting it instead though!

I don't really think of hubby as a part of the team, I know he knows now and helps out – but he's not full fledged Torchwood. I loved the bait and switch with the doc from the first episode. I was SO sure he was going to be their new medical expert until he shot Jack. And the other end result I was hoping for was that the Jack would save the day and Earth would recognize Torchwood and create the governments of the world would embrace it and fund a global organization to protect the Earth from extraterrestrial threats.
But I was not expecting to have Jack save the day by sacrificing his own grandson after losing his lover only to take off to god-knows-where to run away from the pain. Not a hollywood ending – gotta love BBC.

I just cannot imagine what they can do for a fourth series. Everyone is dead….except Gwen, who I have always found a bit annoying.
I, too, wanted Ianto to go out saving…well, if not the world, at least something. He might as well have been run over by a cross-town bus.
After an amazing three episodes, I felt the ending just went too dark. I do not require a happy ending, but I do want at least a little hope left….
There was a good article on AfterElton about the series. I may not agree with the author that gay characters should be sacrosanct (though there are too few of them), I do think he makes some very good points.

That IS a great article – I was so mad when they killed Tara off on Buffy.

Absolutely gutted they killed Ianto.
And have to agree, it has got rather dark, fantastic writing, not sure I necessarily liked all it though.

God- I cried like a small, crying child.
Not that I didn't see it coming. But I still cried.
At least we still have the FanFiction.

Still, At least it wasn't an incident with a toaster or something.

What amazed me about Torchwood was how they weren't afraid of killing off characters. I sobbed like a baby when Tosh/Owen died. I still get very emotional when I hear Tosh tell Owen "You're breaking my heart". Was it fair that Ianto died, no not at all but I think it was very important. It showed 2 real things, people in the Torchwood universe aren't safe and there is a definite consequence to Jack's actions. I mean what was his plan running into the Thames building.
I look forward to series 4, if it gets made. I know that Lois Habeeba needs to be a member of Torchwood 5 (remember Torchwood 4 got "lost").

We were told from the beginning that Torchwood members don't live long or die natural deaths. But I think they had driven that home well enough with Tosh and Owen dying so recently – I would have liked more of a complete season with Ianto and Jack comfortable together before this cataclysmic event tore them apart forever.
I agree that Lois Habeeba needs to be a member of Torchwood 5. I think she'll be their new "Ianto" – in job function anyway – tho now that I'm thinking about it – Jack Harkness has been shown to be bisexual so they'll probably entangle him with a woman next.
Dammit! It's not fair. Why do great gay characters get killed off. Can't we just enjoy our inclusion awhile?
07/30/2009 at 6:15 pm
Well, it's not just gay characters that get killed off…
And Ianto never said he was gay, per se. He had a girlfriend in season one and claimed it was 'Just him' about Captain Jack
I loved season three. A couple of illogical moments but I loved the way i picked up and expanded on the themes seen in 'Small Worlds' in Season one, which was one of my favourites. The overtly political nature of the show gave it a stunning edge and also reminded me of 'Edge of Darkness'. Good to see PC Andy get on a fight . . .
Honestly, this is as brilliant a piece of TV as I've seen in years.
Rumour has it season four has been commissioned, but that's yet to be confirmed… but does it have to be in Cardiff? There are still two branches of Torchwood that are completely unexplored, after all!

Oh ya – that moment with his sister. I did cry a bit there. It was so sweet when he was going to cover and then instead just replied "he IS very handsome." That and his line "its not men it's just him." I know he's fictional – but to me it meant something to have him alive and well in his fictional universe.
He may not have identified as "gay," but I think we can feel comfortable including him with the many LGBT characters created and then needlessly killed off without realizing their potential not only as characters but also as important symbols for the future and significant advances in the place of LGBT characters in popular culture.

Yeah, I know….I was just ebing pedantic
I did like Ianto. He was probably the only really likeable character on the show and having him alive would have made season four more interesting.
The problem with Torchwood – for me – is that the Captain Jack character has changed so much and become much less likeable since The Empty Child. He was charming and wonderful in that; right up until Torchwood started…
I'm probably the only person in the known universe who would be happy with Torchwood not having Captain JAck in it . . .Torchwood existed before his arrival and can continue without him….
ANd yeah, you're right about Ianto and LGBT characters in popular culture…
Speaking of significant advances….Eastenders is current;y featuring a storyline about a gay Muslim guy. Can't tell you more as I don't watch it….but I"m sure there must be stuff on the web somewhere….

Well, here's something . . . .

Did Jack change over the run of the show or was there just mote about him uncovered. Going back to when we first met him, he is a bit of a coward and in it for himself. His time being stuck as a “fixed moment in space & time” hardened him. Made him watch the people he cared about and loved wither and die before his eyes. That’s why he was resistant to Ianto. He had already watched the mother of his child run into protective custody to get away from him. Did he deserve to be happy after all he’s been through? I say yes, but life doesn’t always work out. I liked Ianto and thought Gareth did a helluva job bringing him to life. I think the whole show from beginning to end shows the public how a program can flourish if it’s left in the hands of the creators and not meddled with. Something American TV execs need to learn.

well good news that the show has been renewed for a new season on BBC 1 channel which is a major channel
I was worried Gwen would die – I actually enjoyed her alot in this mini-series

I was gobsmacked on seeing this last series. I'd almost given up on Russell T giving us a strong story after some weak plotting in Dr Who but this was a cracker. The ending was darkly perfect and I suspect Jack will be back with a completely different Torchwood next year. It was sad to have a gay relationship in a high profile show end the way it did (I hadn't realised the parallels with Buffy at the time but I miss Tara too) but again it served as yet another reason for Jack (killing his grandson notwithstanding) to escape to outer space in pain.

Wow, this totally blew me away! I finally saw the entire run last night and I'm still depressed about it. Maybe I should blog about it, but damn, I really liked Ianto. No offense to Harkness fans, but Ianto is really the guy that I've been crushing on since day 1. I know it's a fantasy and a drama, so I can deal with deaths of characters, but dammit, I'm still upset about it and I don't have to like it. I really hope Jack's not put together with a women next season, that would just be disappointing to me. Hopefully the show writers will keep him on the 'guy side' of his bisexuality.

I dunno. . . i mean, I'm all for gay couples on TV, but Jack is a 50th Century omnisexual guy…couldn't have a relationship with somehitng other than male or female human? Apart from a brief flirt with Rose in 'The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances' and saying 'hi' to the woman in Bad Wolf which the Doctor interpretted as flirting, we've not seen anything to qualify his 'ominsexual' status.
