Well, its all over the ‘net… In brightest day… In blackest night no Evil shall escape Ryan Reynolds might!

After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has chosen Ryan Reynolds to play the title character in “Green Lantern,” the studio’s live-action movie based on the DC Comics hero.

I hope they use the recent Geoff Johns additions to Hal Jordan’s origin.

Ryan Reynold IS Green Lantern!

I think he’s a good choice – I would have picked him for Wally West instead and gone with Nathan Fillion for GL (even BEFORE that great fan-made-trailer), but I can see it. I love Ryan Reynolds, I think Reynolds has been poised on the edge of being a real Hollywood leading man for a while now and I hope he really makes this movie a breakthrough hit.

Martin Campbell (who directed Goldeneye and Casino Royale) is on board to direct and while the budget – which has been rumored to have swollen to as high as $200 million for the space epic – is still not finalized, production is expected to begin in January of 2010.

Of course, this revelation immediately started speculation on how this will affect the previously announcedDeadpool movie from Fox starring Ryan Reynolds.

He recently starred in a comic-book movie, 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” in which he played Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth. The character is being developed for a spin-off in which Reynolds will star. He also played Marvel’s vampire hunter Hannibal King in “Blade: Trinity.”

If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds technically the second actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. A number of news outlets are reporting he is the first as did I, until HeroesNHunks reader kerutlj reminded us that Halle Berry played Storm AND Catwoman – but I can’t REALL fault them as far as I’m concerned that travesty with Patience Phillips instead of Selina Kyle was NOT the real Catwoman so it doesn’t count.

  1. Bradley Cooper was the name I was expecting, but Reynolds is a good choice. Thank the gods that Justin Timberlake didn't get the part. He was thrid on the shortlist. And let us be even more thankful that it didn't go to some half-assed choice like Brendan Frasier, Brian Austen Green or Nicholas Cage – all names that have come up for this and other superhero films in recent years.

  2. "Only Actor to Play Both DC and Marvel"?
No, Halle Berry played Catwoman (DC) and Storm (Marvel) already.
Good choice, wonder how he'll play it, witty or more serious? And i just hope he's creative with his ring, and not boring.

I was surprised to see Ryan as the choice – I thought the role as Deadpool might count against hm…

  4. Yum Yum Reynolds! Can't get enough of him!

While I too would have preferred Nathan Fillion, I knew it was a pipe dream…..

Fortunately, Ryan also has comedy chops, and Hal Jordan has to have a sense of humor….and great abs….so we're covered, right?

  6. I love me some Reynolds, but I see him more as a Kyle Rayner than a Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion would've been perfect as Hal, IMHO, but oh well. I'll wait to see a few trailers before making my decision, and hey, if nothing else, maybe we'll get a few shirtless scenes.
