Amazing Spider-Man – American Son’s Conclusion
I haven’t been following this, but from the looks of Newsarama’s preview of Amazing Spider-Man #599, and the Peter Parker POV statement on page 1, I’ll have to pick up the inevitable trade paperback…
Here is a gorgeous collection of Phil Jimenez covers from the American Son arc (595, 596, 597, 598 & 599) plus next month’s John Romita Jr. (never been a big fan, but I REALLY like this cover) wraparound cover for Amazing Spider-Man #600.
The greatest Marvel super hero of all celebrates his 600th issue with the biggest all-original issue of Amazing Spider-Man EVER! This one’s got it all! The return of Doctor Octopus, Daredevil, a wedding you never predicted, and the return of one of the most important people in Peter Parker’s life in a giant-sized lead story by Dan Slott and John Romita Jr. Doc’s back in town, but it’s only a prelude to darker days ahead as Spidey unknowingly prepares for a gauntlet he can’t even see coming. On top of all that, witness the return of one of Spider-man’s creators, Smilin’ Stan Lee (along with Masticatin’ Marcos Martin) as he presents a story of unbridled passion, drama and angst as Spidey reflects over his many, many years of adventures. But that ain’t all…as the rest of the Spidey Web-Heads bring you several short features showcasing some rarely explored aspects of both Spidey and Pete’s life, drawn by some of the greatest artists in comics. Plus, several other surprises and NO REPRINTS!
And the just released preview pages and solicit for the final issue of the American Son story arc – Amazing Spider-Man #599…
AMERICAN SON CONCLUDES! It’s the ultimate battle between friend and family as Spidey’s battle against the Iron Patriot and his Dark Avengers leaves one man with a choice too painful to contemplate. Plus, with wedding plans at high-fervor, Pete’s identity stands revealed to the person who stands to be most changed by the information.
I transcribed the ENTIRE small print monologue about the recent goings on in Amazing Spider-Man from Peter Parker’s POV – read it after the jump…
FROM THE POINT-OF-VIEW OF PETER PARKER – THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
Let me tell you a little bit about Norman Osborn: of the two great loves of my life, he’s murdered one and terrorized the other. He emotionally bullied my best friend, his son Harry, into a lifetime of substance abuse and daddy issues. But he also killed the Skrull Queen in the middle of that so-called Secret Invasion. So now he’s been handed the keys to the national security kingdom. No I’m not sure how that happened either. But hey, I’m Peter Parker, and I’m used to my enemies having unlimited power and respect.
Normie’s got his own Avengers team – mainly a bunch of his favorite Thunderbolt sociopaths dressed up to look like us, the real heroes – and he tries to recruit Harry to finish the team as his own Captain America, “American Son.” I knocked out “his” Spider-Man (really my old sparring buddy, Mac Gargan, a.k.a. Venom, formerly The Scorpion) and infiltrated the building in disguise, only to be ratted out by Harry.
Normie’s tortured me up pretty good, while Harry and his former fiancee, Lily Hollister, plotted their escape from the building. Apparently Osborn took Lily in after she was outed as the grey goblin, Menace, during her dad’s ill-fated run for Mayor. When Harry discovered Lily was pregnant, he struck a deal with his dad to save her. but she doesn’t want to be saved – in fact Norman juiced her up as a new, improved Menace – and it appears it’s Norman not Harry who’s the father of her child. When it looked like Norman was poised to take me out, Harry finally took on the American Son mantle, and took the fight to his dad.

I was so against Brand New Day that I almost dropped all the Spidey titles. I'm glad i didn't. Amazing Spider-Man has brought back the Spidey I grew up with, a funny, webslinging, every day joe trying to balance his life with his alter ego. American Son has been a really well written and illustrated storyline, with cliff hangers, witty one liners, and shocking revelations. The past few Spidey Storylines have been great, and he's definitely back up there in my top tier of favorite superheroes!
