Rob Liefeld hopes to de-gay Shatterstar and Rictor

Although I doubt Marvel would ever even consider giving him the chance, the 90′s MOST overrated comic artist, often ridiculed X-Force creator Rob Liefeld has now gone on record as saying…

“As the guy that Created, designed and wrote his first dozen appearances, Shatterstar is not gay. Sorry Can’t wait to someday undo this. Seems totally contrived. Shatterstar is akin to Maximus in Gladiator. He’s a warrior, a Spartan, and not a gay one.”

The capital “C” on “Created” is a direct quote – hmmm, God complex? It doesn’t matter what he thought about the character as it’s creator. He created Shatterstar for Marvel and whatever they publish with that character is canon whether it comes from the mind of the original creator or not. Get over it Rob.

Shatterstar #1 of 4 Shatterstar #2 of 4 Shatterstar #3 of 4 Shatterstar #4 of 4

the Blogger at Southern4Life really said it best – “Seems totally contrived, Rob? We can say that about your art as well.

When a fan pointed out while “Liefeld created Shatterstar and did several issues with him, he isn’t the only one that’s written him, and he isn’t the only one that has contributed to his character,” to which Liefeld replied…

“Your opinion doesn’t change the fact that it sucks and its not a positive move in most fans eyes.”

Shatterstar Shatterstar

I have already been “banned” (I registered using my other handle pxlforge – figuring heroesnhunks might get me banned before I even got in) from Rob Liefeld’s forum for posting my dissenting opinion. I posted nothing against the rules, just the following…

Umm did you people actually READ X-Force after Liefeld left? There were MANY hints as to the relationship between Shatterstar and Rictor. I for one am happy to see Marvel having the balls to finally follow through on the old sub-plots. With his comment about undoing PAD’s story, I bet Marvel never lets Rob near the character again.

I thought he probably promptly deleted my comment from the forum, but I got a form submission from pxlforge.com congratulating me on my “nice hit & run on Liefeld’s board.” So it was up AT LEAST long enough for someone to read it and track me down. Let me know if it is still there. I AM ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING ALL OF YOU TO REGISTER AND CYBER-BULLY ROB LIEFELD (nothing illegal or life threatening – I just want him to understand his opinion isn’t the only one). C’mon, It’ll be fun! Like Kathy Griffen on Ryan Secrest!

If you are unfamiliar with his anatomy-mangling artwork, be sure to check out Rob Liefeld’s 40 Worst Drawings and one he stole from John Byrne. As anyone can tell by his ridiculously passe drawing style, Liefeld’s time on high-profile books is long past so we REALLY shouldn’t worry.

Here is a comment from current X-Factor writer Peter Allan David about his reasons for bringing back the Shatterstar / Rictor pairing…

here’s the bottom line: The only capacity in which anyone was asking to see the return of Shatterstar was in conjunction with addressing his past with Rictor (a past, I should emphasize, with which I had no creative involvement.) Absolutely no one was saying, “Gee, I always liked Shatterstar, I’d like to see him return.” If they were, they sure weren’t saying it to me. But, “Hey, Peter, with Rictor in the book, we’d love to see you bring back Shatterstar and have them pick up where they left off”…THAT I was hearing a lot. There seemed to be interest in it. So I figured, What the heck. No one else is doing anything with Shatterstar. I might as well.

a few more extremely choice replies from PAD

when you (Rob Liefeld) put forward comments that begin with, essentially, “Some of my best friends are gay” and end with “I can’t wait to undo this,” you have to be screamingly naive to not realize you’re going to come across as a raging homophobe.

Shatterstar and Rictor's gayest moments

Rob…seriously…you can’t have it both ways. You stated that your work on Shatterstar in his first dozen appearances locked in that he wasn’t gay, or bi. His first dozen appearances did not constitute nineteen years worth of stories. The fact is that various people have done far more with Shatterstar than you did, and drawn many lines connecting him with Rictor. Now perhaps you didn’t read those issues, or perhaps you thought all those were stupid as well. Which is fine; you’re certainly entitled to your opinion, and considering you created the character, your opinion carries much weight. But you don’t get to act as if for nineteen solid years the character (who for a sizable percentage of those years has been MIA) has never displayed the slightest homosexual tendency when the fact is that other writers have implied exactly that. In other words, he’s been of ambiguous sexual orientation for far longer than the dozen appearances where you say he wasn’t.

Shatterstar and Rictor's gayest moments Shatterstar and Rictor's gayest moments Shatterstar and Rictor's gayest moments

And what is your vision of Shatterstar?
He’s brave? Check.
Strong? Check.
Valiant warrior? Check.
Dedicated to his team mates? Check.
A hero? Check.
Big honkin’ swords? Check.
Garish costume and ridiculously long hair? Well…you can’t have everything.

Ask yourself: How much of your vision of your favorite character involved his sexuality? I’m guessing little-to-none. Meantime, aside from his ensemble and coiffure, he’s the same guy he always was. So basically your favorite character has returned and you’re going to…what? Not read about it? Because he cares about another man? Does that seem reasonable to you? If you believe it is, I respect that. But to me…it doesn’t.

  1. Wow, not only does Liefield's art suck, but he's a complete ass hat too!

Why can't writers accept that they work in an industry where the characters they create are open game to different interpretations? Any real artist knows that once you've created something and put it out there, it's no longer your baby anymore and you have no say on how people react to it, see it, interpret it, or change it.

If he didn't want Shatterstar to be gay he should have made him a creator owned property.

Liefeld's art is pedestrian. He became a moderate success at a time when fewer people pursued a career in graphic novel illustration. Now readers have endless choices. The classic artists are still golden and always will be. Rob isn’t one of them. In fact, if all comics looked like his I’d likely never pick one up.

The interesting thing about the forum is how they treat dissent. As homophobic as Liefeld may be, he still enjoys a constant stream of smoke being blown up his ass.

    Well said on all points.

  6. I cannot believe that Rob Liefeld would actually think that Marvel would even CONSIDER lettin "undo" this. They would get so much bad publicity if they did that. Is he really THAT out of touch? Well looking at his work – probably.

…right, because there's never been a cool, kickass, scary-as-hell gay warrior.

    Sacred Band of Thebes, anyone?

I went on over to the Rob forums and created an account. Rob has personally "challenged" me to show him evidence that Shatt and Ric had an attraction to each other.

I quoted some examples and even told him I would post a picture of it.

    hehe

I can't believe he is still refuting the claim that they weren't setting them up to be a couple. The editor of the book at the time even confirmed this.

Problem is that talking to the guy is absolutely futile. Valid points that people brought were ignored unless he could think of a way to twist them. He went so far as to just ignore one of my answers and copy-paste his prior statement. o_O
What really, really bugs me though is that he's still merrily posting – isn't he supposed to be employed?
Frustrating, he goes on my wall right next to Stephenie Meyer.

The true mark of prejudice and homophobia is when a person tells you where a certain group of people doesn't belong. The whole, "I'm not a prejudice person, but you can't do that or go there." sort of mentality. I've read a few of those posts over there that confirm that sort of mindset.

Gays just make some folk uncomfortable and they think it's their right to condemn us to the shadows so they don't have to consider us as real, viable people.

Has anyone gotten him to comment on the fact that subsequent creative teams have already acknowlegded that Shatterstar and Rictor were going to be involved in a relationship in X-Force? (as planned by then writer Jeph Loeb)

  17. Well, Rob has closed the thread from any further postings but I managed to find something that is of interest. Former X-Force editor Mark Powers did confirm some time ago that Shatterstar and Rictor were going to be in a relationship.

    http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2007/10/

It never came about because of a change in the creative team and the sub-plot was dropped.

Yeah – The previous writer (Fabian Nicieza) set up Shatterstar as having an asexual background, and writer Jeph Loeb (who followed Nicieza) was planning on developing Shatterstar's sexuality and a sexual relationship with Rictor until the new writer (John Francis Moore) ended up dropping both characters from the book.

I posted link in reply to a previous comment about the editor confirming that they were indeed setting up a romantic relationship between the two characters.

    Heyyyy Rob!
I'd love to shatter Rictor's star!

  21. Its funny, gay/homosexual/whatever people want every comic fan to just jump up, pull out their disco balls and accept straight heroes being turned gay for shock value. Are you that starved to convert the world into a damn rainbow? Most of your mothers still clench their purses or cross when a Black person walks down the street and your fathers still say "commie bastards, kyke, spook, coolie and mick" over toast and eggs. HOMOPHOBE? Maybe you are a STRAIGHT-HATER. People that cannot imagine that other people CHOSE not to embrace hairy men slobbing each other down and don't get off like a virgin geek when they see 2 women touching. Is the homosexual community that desperate that they applaud Marvel and DC outing old characters (Rictor and Shatterstar aside because they have BEEN gay) just to sell books? I am a Black male and I rather them leave Black people out of a book rather than some of the outright racist, disconnected cmethods they use to include a token Black to meet the quota, much like they are doing with homosexuals now. Its not fair to the fans of old recently sexually-converted characters and not fair to the homosexual/lesbian community to exploit them for profit. Create new characters, flesh old old hints (Like Ric and Shatter) or just leave people be. There is no reason for Rictor to be hanging all over Shatterstars neck like a long outed (and flamboyant) gay men when they vaguely hinted at it in the past and their teammates are like "wha?". Its exploitation for profit…plain and simple. Quesada is a very greedy man and Marvel is a corporation with a bottom line. PROFIT.

I don't have anything against gay folks, before you start labeling me…just don't like it in ALL of my comics as its seeming to find its way in every single book, yet we still have Black characters named 'Shield Agent Cooning', 'Gorilla Girl', 'Bruddah Voodoo', a black woman who turn into a male monster named 'Menace' and countless other fast, jive-talking, slave chain wearing, jumping or ex-convict Black characters to exploit.

Do what you want. Love who you want. Its your choice. Like its my choice not to buy books with men making out every 5 pages for shock. How about writing a good story? Does anyone do that anymore?

    For the record…LIEFELD SUCKS.

    Son-Of-Dad
    Straight Male and proud!

  22. And by "Hanging all over Shatterstars neck" I was referring to X-FACTOR #50 cover with Rictor acting like he is the new neighbor on Will and Grace.

    Come on.

    1. I generally am pretty psyched whenever a character is revealed as gay – as long as it doesn't flout any established facts about the character – it has to make sense.

    2. If/when my parents say "commie bastards, kyke, spook, coolie and mick" in my presence (they know not to) i tell them to cut it the fuck out and step into the 21st century. Bigotry sucks in every form but with each generation we get closer to defeating it. Sometimes It's OUR duty to educate our elders.

3.Yes homophobe – Liefeld's comments sounded as if he was unfamiliar with what other writers had done with Rictor and Shatterstar in his absence. And his comments WERE homophobic "Shatterstar is akin to Maximus in Gladiator. He’s a warrior, a Spartan, and not a gay one" – c'mon – you can't NOT expect that to bait a mob of angry gay geeks. I feel perfectly justified in picking up my torch and joining in.

    4. Congrats on being evolved enough not to be easily duped into buying things by titillating lesbians – but news for you – you are the exception to the rule.

    5. If not Rictor and Shatterstar then what old characters revealed as gay are you bothered about? I tried to come up with a list.

    6. Thanks for the heads up on the cover to #50. It prompted this post.

    7. Of course the companies are doing this for profit – they will do whatever they can to sell the books. I would have to apologize on behalf of the comics community for "Shield Agent Cooning," "Bruddah Voodoo" and even Black Lightning and Power Man were originally 2 dimensional stereotypes – DC has evolved him a bit) but you can't tell me that characters like John Stewart (the GL not the talk show host), Steel, Cyborg, Storm, Bishop and T'Challa the genius inventor, gifted athlete and King weren't somehow inspirational to young readers like yourself. There are young gay readers out there who need to see themselves reflected in the world of comics. And if a writer can take an old character off the shelf and make it more interesting with a gay twist and it's not incongruous with what has gone before – go for it.

    8. If anything I'd say the tendency to take beloved characters and turn them evil and then kill them (Phoenix, Parallax, Hawk, Scarlet Witch, Obsidian (he got better), Northstar (he got better)) is much more upsetting.

    9. For the Record – noone was making out every 5 pages… there was 1 kissing panel in each of the last 2 issues.

    10. There was a great reason for Rictor to be hanging all over Shatterstar – they are in love and recently reuinted after a long time apart – AND they would have just come out to (and hopefully feel supported by) all their teammates (we have a few issues between current 1 and that cover).

    11. If you want to read a good story – pick up any trade paperback written by Peter David. He is good and controversy or not, his stories stand on their own.

    12. Thanks for writing. Always good to hear another viewpoint!

    7. Is Menace a male monster? – didn't look male – not sexy by any definition – but it looked female to me.

    8. I see a reason for Rictor to hang all over Shatterstar in the group shot – they've been recently reunited and over the next few issues (between current one and #50) will come out to (and hopefully be accepted by) their teammates. If Siryn and Madrox had lived happily ever after with their baby you wouldn't think twice about her hanging on him.

    9. for the record – no one was making out every 5 pages. The amount of affection showed has been tasteful – there has been 1 kissing panel in each of last 2 issues.

Referring to the GLBT community as "whatevers" and evoking the imagery of disco balls and the accusation of conversion demonstrates the same uninspired gay-hating douchebagery that Liefeld’s been spewing.

(Continued from truncated reply to Godwell)

If one in 10 people are gay, then media and comics should reflect that in both old and new characters. To equate gay inclusion to Blacksploitation is dishonest and smacks of a pre-existing chip on your shoulder.

Sure, there are trendy hacks in every medium that exploit minorities and more for shock value, however your objection didn’t really cite any concrete examples and just went off on the two characters displaying tenderness to one another that wouldn’t bother you if it were a heterosexual couple.

  27.
    buttersboi

You say it is okay for characters like Rictor and Shatterstar to be gay, but it bothers you for them to share the same tenderness as a straight couple. Seriously dude, that IS homophobic. And your description of gays as, “hairy men slobbing each other down…” exposes deeper issues you have that I want no part of dissecting – especially considering that you are trolling a forum called Heroes N Hunks!
    (Final truncated reply to Godwell)

It’s a big world. You’re not going to like everything. Keep your eyes on your own paper, your hands to yourself and deal with it. Don’t go into Gay Panic because no gay dude wants your straight wienage. It’s a big world full of gays in life and in comics. We have all sorts of choices out in the daylight nowadays. If Peter Allan David’s thoughtful support in comics is any indication – it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change.
