I came of age in the 80′s and therefore hold a special place for a few of the era’s pornstars. I first came across Ryan Idol when renting a solo j/o video that he put out called Ryan Idol: A Very Personal View (I couldn’t find a link – anyone? Bueller?). You could tell he thought a lot of himself and his process because he babbled on and on about how hot he was during each scene in the movie. But it was damn hot if you turned the sound down. I don’t have many of his movies but his scenes in Score 10 are forever burned into my memory.
5 ft 11inch tall Ryan Idol was born Marc Anthony Benet in Worcester Massachusetts on August 10, 1966. He first gained the public’s attention for his February 1989, “Man of the Month” centerfold in Playgirl under the name Marc Anthony Donais. That pictorial led to modeling and then notoriety and success in the adult film industry under the name Ryan Idol. Although Idol was one of a number of pornstars at the time who embodied the gay-for-pay "total top" he created something of a sensaion in two of his last videos by sucking off Tom Katt in Idol Thoughts won the AVN Award for Best Performer in 1995 for his performance in Idol Country, in which he sucks and rims Steve Marks before fucking him.
After 7 years as one of gay porn’s most popular leading men, he retired from the adult industry in 1996. Idol experienced a “near-death experience” on March 20, 1998, when he was seriously injured by a drunken and drug-induced fall from a window in his (or his girlfirend’s) 3rd (or 4th) floor New York City apartment (there are conflicting reports). Idol has stated that he has no recollection of jumping and that “the drugs and alcohol took over.”
Idol starred in the play Making Porn in 1999 and followed it up by playing “Bill Tom” in the gay love story Scent of Rain, written by Mark Dunn. In his reviews, he was lauded for “continu[ing] to establish himself as a capable actor”. Idol made his Broadway debut when he played the “Crisco Patron” in the Roundabout Theater Company’s 2007 revival of Terrence McNally’s The Ritz.
In 2008, Idol was mentioned, under his real name, in court documents related to a lawsuit filed by HealthSouth in connection with allegations of misuse of funds donated to Birmingham, Alabama mayor Larry Langford‘s Computer Help for Kids charity. The papers show $30,000 being paid to Idol, with $5,000 coming from the charity and $25,000 from the Council of Cooperating Governments.
Charity director John Katopodis testified in a deposition that Idol was paid to repair computers and also to set up computer giveaway programs in other areas. Idol testified that, because of his 1998 fall, he was "not at [his] full faculties" and could not recall the details of his time with the organization.
Regarding his sexuality, Idol stated, "I’d just like to say I’m a loving person. I can love a man and I can love a woman. Over the years I have chosen to not label myself because there are plenty of others who will. I am happy to not label myself. Even though I come from that business, if one were to look at the plots from the films that I did – I only did 6 – it’s art depicting life and life depicting art. My first movie was close to where I was in my own life, and that was being curious about the gay world but having come from a Catholic background."
Oddly enough there isn’t a compliation video of his work, but here is a list of his movies with links to find them. Sorry I couldn’t find more VOD links, but these flicks are old so I was lucky to even find DVD links. Highlights would include his scene with Dcota in Score 10, his somewhat tender outdoor fuck with Steve Marks in Idol Country and a number of scenes starring a hairier beefier Ryan in Idol in the Sky. What are YOUR favorite scenes of his?
