If you remember the supersized 100 paged Superman Family title (1974 to 1982), than you know Dick Grayson took the name Nightwing from an old silver age adventure in Kandor. There have been a four Nightwing and Flamebird duos… The first was Superman as Nightwing and Jimmy Olson (of all people) as Flamebird. The second was Superman’s look-alike second cousin Van-Zee and his niece’s husband Ak-Var who were inspired by Clark and Jimmy. The 3rd due were never a duo, much to the chagrin of Flamebird. Bette Kane, the original golden age Bat-Girl was so obsessed with Dick Grayson (and who can blame her – has a hero ever looked as commanding in a bikini and elf boots since he stopped being Robin?) but even a sliver age connection wasn’t enough to create a bond. Aside from a few stories, they never became a real duo.
Superwoman has also has a number of incarnations (including a few super-powered Lois Lane adventures). This incarnation is waring a Alex Ross designed costume similar to the one worn by pre-crisis time traveler Kristen Wells not to be confused with the “third Kryptonian” also called Kristin Wells.
Well known fanboy, former werewolf and son of Dr. Evil, Seth Green will be guest starring on tonight’s Heroes with former Garfield owner, fellow Heroes fan and collaborator on Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken, Breckin Meyer.
The pair will be playing the owners of Sam’s Comics and recognize Hiro and Ando from 9th Wonders.
They no doubt took pay checks, but Seth Green and Breckin Meyer didn’t want to guest-star on NBC’s Heroes for the money.
The actors, , simply wanted to fulfill a genre desire.
“I’ve asked over and over and over again to be on the show and then eventually I guess I wore them down,” Green said.
“I’m a big fan of the show,” Meyer said. “I’ve seen every episode.”
The roles — which are featured in Monday’s episode, “The Eclipse — Part 1″ — came about shortly after Comic-Con International in San Diego last summer, where Green and Meyer were promoting Robot Chicken and Heroes staged a panel, led by recently released co-executive producer Jeph Loeb.
“I have been after Jeph Loeb since the show came on. ‘How do I get on that show?’,” Green said. “And then he called me and it was like, ‘Alright, the time has come.’ And he said, ‘Do you know anybody, because we’ve got this other part?’ I was like, ‘Well Breckin Meyer
, to tell you the truth.’ And he was baffled. He was like, “Breckin would never do this.’ And I said, ‘I bet he will. I’ll call him.’”
As far as I know they will have no powers I can’t wait until tonight. Watch and enjoy! I’ll post the 2 minute replay and full episode from hulu.com once they are up…
Ok this has me a little verklempt too. I wonder where gay politics would be today if Harvey Milk had NOT been assassinated.
Harvey Milk was the first openly-gay man to be elected to public office in the US in 1977. His most recognized speech, “You Cannot Live On Hope Alone,” was given in 1978, shortly before he was assassinated. His words resonate particularly today as Californians debate a resolution to ban gay marriage.
Somewhere in Des Moines or San Antonio there is a young gay person who all the sudden realizes that he or she is gay; knows that if their parents find out they will be tossed out of the house, their classmates will taunt the child, and the Anita Bryant’s and John Briggs’ are doing their part on TV. And that child has several options: staying in the closet, and suicide. And then one day that child might open the paper that says “Homosexual elected in San Francisco” and there are two new options: the option is to go to California, or stay in San Antonio and fight. Two days after I was elected I got a phone call and the voice was quite young. It was from Altoona, Pennsylvania. And the person said “Thanks”. And you’ve got to elect gay people, so that thousand upon thousands like that child know that there is hope for a better world; there is hope for a better tomorrow. Without hope, not only gays, but those who are blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us’s: without hope the us’s give up. I know that you can’t live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you, and you, and you, and you have got to give them hope.
-Harvey Milk, 1978

Following closely on the stirring events of SUPERGIRL #35, “New Krypton” part 6 sees the unrest between the Kryptonians and humankind rapidly spin out of control. Superman knows it’s only a matter of time before widespread violence breaks out between the two cultures. But deep in the heart of the U.S. military, a deadly new Squad K is being organized. Its mission: clean up the “Kryptonian problem” before it gets out of hand!
Special thanks to Dave the Blogger at WickedGayBlog for this one. It really did make me tear up. I guess my emotions are easier to manipulate than I thought.
The video seems to be an ad for www.bjornborg.com/en/Love… which in addition to showcasing a collection of men’s and women’s sportswear also appears to house a dating site of some sort. One of you single fellas out there wanna check it out and lemme know what its all about?
Last week I reported about the story in Manifest Destinty #3 in which the latest Young X-Man (Jonas Graymalkin) came out to Anole (Victor Borkowski – and yes I’m using his real name because “his parents gave him a name and he likes to use it occasionally”). I think having 2 gay characters in a title as mainstream as Young X-Men is very important and will be watching these 2 like a hawk and hoping for realistic and responsible characterization.
As I said in my initial article, I am really hoping that their relationship will become a lasting example of two gay best friends rather than a romance. The dice are still in the air so I’m not sure exactly what the writers have in store for these two yet, but I’ll keep you posted.
I like Anole’s quip, and as a “gay guy who moved to San Francisco” it rings true. I just hope they don’t feel the need to have him literally remind us he’s gay all the time.
So far it seems that Anole is the only team member that Graymalkin has confided in thus far. He still needs some therapy – poor boy is talking to himself in front of people.
Although I was happy to see Victor Borkowski (Anole) looking out for his new friend on the battlefield, why would they send Graymalkin? He has has zero training and has been underground for 200 years… Doesn’t he need therapy, some Danger Room sessions and an education covering the past 2 centuries of human advancement before you send him up against an unknown enemy?
Um, yeah. I guess he could use some training. Also what kind of crappy flimsy spandex uniform did they give Graymalkin that plain old claws can cut through it? Its not as if they are Wolvie’s adamantium claws, just a gangbanger mutant wanna be.
It bothers me that they establish a friendship between the 2 gay characters and then show it as a sign of weakness because it distracts Anole during battle. I hope this isn’t a recurring theme.
