What IS it with Batman’s voice?

Christian Bale as The Dark Knight

The only fault I found with Dark Knight was the a bit over the top Clint Eastwood style gruff whisper that Christian Bale uses for Batman’s speaking voice. Seems I wasn’t alone.

I understand why Wayne and Batman need to have different voices and that the lower voice register began rather successfully with the Animated Series, but what began as a mild misinterpretation in Begins has become much more forced and audible in Knight. It is especially noticeable juxtaposed to Ledger’s shaded performance. Bale is a much better actor than some of his recent Batman scenes. I don’t understand why some of that wasn’t looped. I’m obviously not the only one that noticed. It is a definite A film and the best movie of the year, but I believe Bale’s Batman voice will unfortunately be parodied in years to come.
