Superman Man of Style - fanboi’s fave finalists

One of my favorite comics related blogs is Project Rooftop - think Queer (or metrosexual - I know nothing about the artists’ proclivities) eye for the Superguy. They have teamed up with Pulp Secret and Jim Hanley’s Universe for their latest drawing challenge…

Superman Man of Style

Project Rooftop regularly runs drawing contests that require redesigning a known iconic comic book hero’s costume. They usually just want a redesign of the costume, but this time they expanded it to be a reimagining of the character from the ground up. here are some of my picks. The winners will be announced Monday.

The first four images are my picks from the 21 finalists shown on Project Rooftop. Avi Bastermagian, Paul Salvi, Les McClaine and Brian Mead. All four lost the red undies.

And then there are these 2… by Art Grafunkel and Kristina Diggs. These are interesting enough, but just not Superman. Judges noted one looks like a concept for Zod or the Eradicator and the other like an elseworlds mangaesque “high school Elseworlds Superboi.” Superyaoi ayone? I haven’t seen Hancock yet, but I’m not getting upset until I see just HOW GAY the costumes that Hancock calls “homo” look. If it is anything like the Superboi we see at bottom right, I’d have to say he may have a legitimate point. Its cute though in a supertwink sort of way.

Thanks for picking my design as one of your top picks.. I think I may have blown it by not slapping some yellow onto my design though! Also, in regards to your comment : They usually just want a redesign of the costume, but this time they expanded it to be a reimagining of the character from the ground up; actually, the contest had all the normal rules apply but #7 : We recommend not trying to redesign Superman.
I totally dig the redesigns and can’t wait to see the other runner ups that will be posted next week..
      Thanks again!

Yours was my top pick. I did read and mention that they had expanded to a “reimagining” instead of the usual redesign. I noticed their notes about the yellow, but then again they seemed to have minor nitpicks for everyone… add boots to one, more saturation to another or simplify an overly “complicated” design.

Basically - beautiful admissions from all involved, but i did love these top 4.

Now for something completely different ….
Speaking of the Eradicator, why isn´t there the “New male slave”-sketch on this blog, fanboi? I thought you liked “KITH” and that is undubitably one of their finest.

Oooh! I like this. People that know me know that my perfect guy is a Clark Kent-type, but his alter-ego suits me just fine.

Avi Bastermagian’s design is by far my favorite of the selections. It’s the only one I can visualize gracing the cover of a Superman comic. Who needs stinkin’ gold in the design? I like this limited palette.

Les McClaine’s is nice also. Maybe a bit bearish for my take on the Man of Steel. Art Grafunkel’s drawing style is the most striking here. It’s not Superman, but it is interesting! I would like to see it applied to other things. Kristina Digs’ pseudo-manga-mixed-with-Shag-style is probably the closest to my own these days; however (unlike my stuff) it doesn’t appear she has a healthy grasp on the male form. It kind of looks like a boyish lesbian in the hip and leg area. Even Superboy has calves - - and nice ones! And…um…no package? This is clearly Speed Racer’s lesbian cousin on Halloween.

I hope to see more contests like this one. Even the less-winning designs are interesting.

Speed Racer’s lesbian cousin on Halloween - LMAO

they’ve had a number of similar contest in the past - I know Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Power Girl have been redesigned by a number of their contributors. I’ll try to let you know when I see a new contest. I may enter something myself one of these days.

I checked out that chick’s stuff and she’s very talented at drawing the female form and other cute fantasy artwork, but has little grasp on the male form.

I also posted contest forum origin. I especially like Mike Maihack’s kind of “dream world” hunky version of Superman with the birds.

      Mike Maihack's Superman

It’s clearly the most fun and he’s got his red Speedos back!

    7. fanboi Says:

I liked some elements of that one, but didn’t like the red speedos looked like red boxers worn over spandex. I noticed most of the redesigns got rid of his speedos, and I think with good reason.
