The Weekly Stack 052108

I got to Whatever a bit early today and they weren’t done opening all the boxes, so my list is a bit short. I’ll have more later in the week. I knew I was going to REALLY like some of the titles this week. Others I looked forward to and really WANTED to like, but in fact, not so much.

The Might Avengers 14
Justice Society of America 15 Incredible hercules 117 Avengers The Initiative 13 Brave and the Bold 13 XMEN: Divided We Stand 2
X-Factor31 Birds of Prey 118 Batman and the Outsiders 7 Cyborg 1 Justice League of America 21

The Mighty Avengers 14: Some GREAT Secret Invasion stuff this issue as we see “Jarvis” (who we see shapeshift so he’s not just brainwashed - he’s been replaced), meeting with a group of fellow infiltrators.

WHO CAN IDENTIFY all the Skrulls he’s meeting with? Talk to me! I see “Spider Woman”, “Hank Pym”. But not sure who else we have there. Click link to see pics of the skrull meet. And tell me who the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are if you know.

One more thing… The VOID to the rescue, brilliant, terrifying, but brilliant.

More short reviews and a few spoiler (verbal and visual) after the jump…

Jarvis, Spiderwoman, Hank Pym are Skrulls, but who are the rest?
The Void to the rescue!

Justice Society of America 13: FINALLY we see Obsidian used effectively. Some nice moments for Lightning (SOMEONE get that girl a steam powered plastic car already) and Citizen Steel too. Oh and some interesting scenes of things to come…

jsa scenes to come from 13

Incredible Hercules 117: The Godsquad (Hercules, Snowbird, Atum, Ajak Tecumotzin and Amatsu-Mikaboshi) gather and take to the dreamtime to travel to the Skrull pantheon and kick some green God ass! Nuff said. This could be truly epic. But I think the choice of gods is a bit odd, I’m surprised Snowbird was the only major Marvel deity. I understand that the recent revival of the Asgardians makes them suspect, but you’d think Athena would have at least investigated Thor.

Avengers The Initiative 13: Butterball rocks! I don’t really see why he washed out. The battle was only a page and a half and other than saying whoa and letting himself get grabbed (whose to say he didn’t do that intentionally, maybe he’s just THAT crafty) he actually inadvertently saved the day with his powerset. But it was still VERY cool for Taskmaster and Constrictor to do something nice for Emery Schaub by posing for the souvenir photo. I hope Emery isn’t forgotten by the folks at Marvel. I think he has great power and therefore great responsibility.

Brave and the Bold 13: Batman and The Flash (Jay Garrick) had some fantastic back and forth as Jay talks to Bats about mentoring, heirs and “passing the mantle.” Its a fun little 1issue story to follow the epic that preceeded it. One of the best moments is when Batman says “yes sir” as Jay explains Bruce’s part in the plan.

X-Men: Divided We Fall 2: I was kind of torn on this issue, I really enjoyed the stories alot, but frustrated where they left us. I know it was meant as a teaser to make me want to read what will be happening in the X-Universe soon, but its frustrating that it was sooo effective.

My Favorite was the Magik story. Even though it didn’t tell us that much. Magik tries to reach out the the X-Men and find the mansion destroyed. She resolves to regain her soul by making Soulstone’s from the soul’s of “those who have wronged her.” In other stories, Forge gets his ass handed to him and is building a better fortress, Surge whines a bit, Havok is inspired by bad news and The Beast sifts through x-mansion rubble, burns some papers, collects Martha Johansson (the telepathic brain in a jar), some nanobots and rogue tech and hangs a no admittance sign. I’m hoping that Val Cooper and her flunkies will be doing a more thorough scrubbing of the grounds?

X-factor 31: Siryn saves Lisa Lamponelli from a burning building. No scratch that, LL is funny. This bitch used to be funny but lost her powers. Arcades face under a face under a face thing was either genius or really dumb, not sure which. You know “there is a fine line between clever and stupid” and I think that may be straddling it. I liked more where this is heading. I’ll bet X-Factor (the team) is going to be getting more official standing in the Marvel U after this debacle.

Birds of Prey 118: Someone needs to tell JSA rogue, Roulette that a bunch of Apokolyptian flunkies are stealing her act. The “drugged heroes fight each other against their wills” concept has been done to death in comics and cartoons. Only thing of interest this issue was the revelation that Misfit and Black Alice are “blood relatives.” Hmmmmm, sisters? cousins? magical childhood duplicate gone awry? Who knows? Its a cheap ploy, and nowhere as interesting as the fact psycho Tabby Brennan is now running around with powers (which I wish they’d get back to), but I still want to know. I must have an inquiring mind.

Batman and the Outsiders 7: I’m liking it, but not enough is happening each issue. I may have to start waiting for trades to really enjoy this. I love the artwork and the lineup interests me. I just want to see the team do something other than screw up or get captured already!

Cyborg 1: This tried to tell me something i don’t know about Cyborg. I read that story and Perez Wolfman did it better. Nice art. If I hadn’t read the original Titans origin miniseries (revealing origins for Starfire, Cyborg, Changeling, and Raven) I might have liked it better. but I’m oldschool. It was still 30 times better than the recent craptastic Raven mini. that sucks harder than Matt Summers working Chad Hunt in Oral Exams - but more on that another time.

Justice League 21: I REALLY wanted to like this! BUT… when does this take place? The trinity talks about Ray Palmer as if he is still missing. They talk COMPLETELY UNCONCERNED about Martian Manhunter as if they DIDN’T find out 2 issues ago that the planet he was supposed to be in isn’t where he OR the villains are. Then to top it all off we get a gay joke from Firestorm. All of that kind of eclipsed the some great exchanges between the WW, Bats and Supes in “the Lounge.”
