Avengers… The MOVIE!

On the heels of an amazing opening weekend for Iron Man, Marvel has released announcements about a number of future film and TV projects for the heroes of the Marvel Universe…including an Avengers live action big screen epic (I know, I’m not holding my breath just yet, the JLA and Wonder Woman movies were scheduled too, lets hope Marvel sticks to their plans better than DC)
From the Marvel First Quarter 2008 Report:
In order to focus its attention on maximizing the success of an Iron Man sequel and the launch of Thor in the summer of 2010 and because Marvel believes that the summer is the optimal time to launch a new property, the Company will not release a self produced film in 2009. Marvel plans to launch its 2010 film slate with the release of the sequel, Iron Man 2, on April 30, 2010, followed by the launch of Thor on June 4, 2010. Additionally, Marvel is planting its feature film stakes for summer 2011 with an Avengers-themed summer – a two-picture project which will debut on May 6, 2011 with The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July 2011.
Other projects listed as officially on the books include:
Big Screen Feature Films: Ant-Man (writer: Edgar Wright and director: Joe Cornish have been engaged), Punisher: War Zone: December 5th, 2008 release, X-Men Origins: Wolverine – May 1st, 2009 release
Animated TV shows: Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon: scheduled for Spring 2009 release,
Iron Man: Armored Adventures cartoon: scheduled for Spring 2009 release on Nicktoons, Hulk Gamma Corps cartoon: scheduled for Spring 2009 release and Super Hero Squad cartoon: scheduled for Spring 2009 release
Direct to DVD Movies: Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow
“Hulk Vs”. DVD: early 2009 release, Thor: Son of Asgard DVD: late 2009 release, Planet Hulk DVD Early 2010 release
Spider-Man: The Musical: still in development (really??? This may be official shark jumping)
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows video game: fall 2008 release.

Big Gay Moment on “Brothers & Sisters”
I’ve only seen one other episode of this show (when Kevin had a fling with closeted Jason “Absolute Hunk” Lewis) I’m glad the character has found someone special… I was watching Sunday and this was all kinds of sweet. Kudos to ABC for being with the times. A beautiful scene.

Divided We Stand… Magik’s back!!!!
OK, so its not exactly news Magik is back. She was last seen in New X-Men when after defeating Belasco, and sending her brother and the new X-Men kids away, Illyanna reclaimed the throne of Limbo and informed S’ym and N’astirh that her next move is to reclaim her soul (and perhaps the Soulsword?).
The issue also includes a story about Surge turning to Dani Moonstar after the X-Men disband, as well as stories about Forge and Beast. Whispers say there will be another surprise story like the unsolicited Hellion bonus tale from #1.

Love and Capes… a heroically super sitcom
Besides the X-Men Pixie issue, the only thing I REALLY enjoyed immensely from the Free Comic Book Day swag pile was Love and Capes #7, written and drawn by Thomas F. Zahler. I hadn’t read any of this title before, though I think one of the customers at Whatever may have recommended it.
Its a charming and humorous tale of a romance between The Crusader and his girlfriend Abby. This issue was all about him popping the question. It is a perfect jumping on point as it smoothly introduces the supporting cast and their personalities and relationships.
Dialog and characterization felt very natural and although the usual heroic fare was relegated to a panel or two as we focus on the characters lives and interactions. The free issue was well timed as there is a trade paperback due in November, and I doubt I’m the only person who picked it up on a whim and liked it enough to watch for the trade. The smart, endearing and authentic dialog is a pleasure to read and Zahler’s stylized art is perfect for the tone of his story without getting cute.
