The Weekly Stack 042008

This weeks comics April 24 2008

Mini-Reviews of the comics i bought this week after the jump…

SOME SPOILERS

Young Avengers Presents: #4, Vision - hmmm, Stature cold?, distant? emotionless? Skrull? she IS on Nick Fury’s wall. But I digress. Generally I liked it. Vision shouldn’t have been able to waltz in as Stark they security must REALLY be for shit, since Vision is (apparently) an established fugitive and has previously been trouble for the government so they really ought to have scanners ready for him. As for relationship between Vision and Stature, I’d say it could be like Vihz and Wanda (artificial being with the encoded memories of another who falls for that ones love) and all that, but that’s probably wishful thinking.

Birds of Prey #117 - Misfit got in some good moments. She obviously still needs more training so people don’t get her by the neck, but otherwise she’s starting to feel like one of the girls. As for Tabby Brennan, I should have known that a dangerous sociopath who dies in an undefined, unexplained magical explosion isn’t gone. That isn’t a death, that is a secret origin.

Countdown #01 - at least its over and there were no more reality eating caterpillars… OK so now these Challengers will unite and monitor the Monitors? Using what resources? Even if they get one Monitor to help, the rest could kick their ass. How exactly can Atom, Donna troy, Bug Girl and Kyle Rayner “enforce punishments” upon the Monitors?

She Hulk#28 - Everyone’s favorite jade giantess can’t seem to stay out of the slammer. Still wondering how Jaz figures into the Skrull invasion, because the timing of her arrival (I never heard of her before she showed up riding shotgun) can’t be a coincidence. Some Irish guy is amessing with Shulkie, but we don’t know why yet.

Mighty Avengers #12 - LOVED IT!!!!! OK we’ve been speculating for awhile about where M.I.A. Nick Fury has been hiding and what he is up to. Well now we have the beginning of that tale. He’s the sneakiest human around and those green bastards couldn’t fool him, so now he’s studing the heroes and villains of the Marvel U to figure out who’s who. Humanity couldn’t ask for a better cavalry to come ariding to the rescue.

Uncanny X-Men #497 - I’m really loving the artwork. Colossus has never looked so good. I’m still not exactly sure whats going on. We have a green eyed brunette “goddess” and a guy named “Eli” whose reflection is older than he appears to be. Not ringing a bell here. Should it? Either way, I’m interested - keep it coming - I’m betting this is all leading to something epic for #500.

Thor #8 - Just as I really enjoyed part 1 of “Father Issues” Ialso enjoyed this. Explanation of loki’s adoption as Odin’s fathers revenge, Lady Loki using Jane foster to keep Sif imprisoned, and a short but dramatic battle scene with Odin and son vs Surtur. A stage has most certainly been set, lets see what’s next…

Ms Marvel #26 - Ok, how many Kree are there running around on Earth? Who or what is William Wagner? Was Machine man ALWAYS this peculiar? I remember reading a Barry Windsor Smith story about him long ago, but nothing like this.

Justice League of America #20 - This felt like a total fill in after the big (well to them at least) reveal last issue that the planet that Amanda Waller’s cronies thought they were banishing criminals to wasn’t where they actually ended up. There were some nice moments for both Flash and Wonder Woman and it was nice to see a full page illustration of Diana WITHOUT her ass sticking out and her back arched for a change.

X-Force #3 - OK it seem off that Rev. Craig didn’t kill Rhane and lied about it, but I AM enjoying the dark moody art. I though The return of Bastion and him seeking Magus was bad enough, but now he’s used Magus’ virus to infect 7 of the X-Men’s most hated enemies (living or dead it doesn’t seem to matter - most were dead if I remember correctly) SO now we have techo-organic Graydon Creed, Donald Pierce, Stephen lang, Rev William Stryker, Leper Queen, Cameron Hodge and Bolivar Trask running around? So Bastion somehow figured out how to transfer “lifeglow” (as warlock called it) to raise and infect the dead? Not a good development for X-Force - I still think it will take more than this slice and dice lineup to defeat this assemblage of evil.
